Big big news today! We are releasing the first screenshots and video of the next PixelJunk game! For those of you who have been following my page on Facebook which has been slowly teasing you since last week, this is the day you’ve all been waiting for!
And… to top it all we are also launching a naming competition! Yes, you heard it right, instead of choosing the name ourselves for PixelJunk 1-4 we would like YOU to name the game for us. This is for those real PixelJunk fans out there, because your name will go into the credits of the game and be immortalized for all eternity (or for a few years at least).
Anyway, first things first, go to the site and look at the concept art, watch the work-in-progress video, and think up a name: http://pixeljunk.jp/namingcontest
It’s looking pretty nice so far we think. We’ve implemented a fluid simulation sandbox with lots of different fluids and interactions and it’s simply a lot of fun to play just by itself, but on top of that we have a really cool “thrust” based game where you can shoot at monsters and carry stuff around to solve the puzzles in each area. The goal is to save the survivors, but what are they survivors of? As you delve deeper into the caverns you’ll learn more about what their predicament is – yes, this time there will be a bit of a story; which is a first in the PixelJunk series so far.
Oh, and we’ll give out free t-shirts to the winner of the naming contest and also to the five runners up, so definitely submit an idea no matter how silly you think it might be, we might just use it. We will pick the winner from a hat containing the names of all the people who submitted the same idea, so send your ideas in by May 11th, which is the closing date for the competition. We will then choose 5 runner up ideas and do the same thing for each one. We’ll then design a logo for the name and announce the winner a few weeks afterwards.

First off, I’d just like to say this game looks radnormous. In true PixelJunk fashion you’ve created a unique looking game with great art direction and some fresh gameplay mechanics. I’m super looking forward to this!
Second, in reference to the naming contest, I’m a little sad to hear that if people submit the same name, a winner will be chosen at random. Luckily I didn’t post any that I submitted publicly. But with how the winner is chosen in mind, what if a person simply goes through the comments here or elsewhere, just submitting a bunch of them?
I think it’s fair to go with whoever submitted the name first, but maybe that’s just because I heard about the contest early. :)

I’m not sure if this would be answered or not. I’ve been a pretty big of the PixelJunk franchise since going back Racers. I always appreciate how diverse the mechanics were and how unique each of the art styles were. I was curious of why 1-4 it shares a simliar art style to Eden. Was the play mechanics something that was toyed with during production of Eden that it spurred for it’s own game? Just curious about the inception of 1-4. Keep up the great work.

Game looks great, reminds me of some Subterranian game on the Genesis that I used to play all the time. Looks unique and something I’ll buy day 1… as long as day 1 isn’t tomorrow. Of course tomorrow won’t happen since it hasn’t even been named yet :)

I submited like a dozen good names, the only few of mines that I’ve seen on this board are the ever-so common Elements and Terra.
I wish they chose the first submission because I entered in Elements way early this morning before the contest was posted on the blog.
But it seems to me Elements is the most appropriate.

Dammit! after I summited Earth I come here and find out that probably thousands of people already have or will eventually do the same… But Earth I think really is the best I’ve heard so far. It fits the game perfectly.

Wow Dylan, you and the team at Q-Games are just nailing these releases. I’ve become re-obsessed with Eden Encore and I have yet to be disappointed with a single PixelJunk release. This looks to continue the tradition.
That said, submitted a couple ideas for names. Hope they make the cut.

Great stuff, looks truly original, love the fluids. Reminds me a bit of Dungeon Keeper in a odd sort of way.
Dylan, any chance you are still working out a frame rates? Looks like you have slight slowdown, but hard to tell from a video. Any chance you are working on original sound effects for the *missiles* being fired? Can’t stress enough how fun the game looks either way, i’m just nit picky :)
The ship, or whatever it is, reminds me a bit of escape velocity mechanics.

The only frame-rate issues are from the video playback – it’s all running silky-smooth at 60fps in 1080p!

I agree with #95, but it’s no big deal if you can’t determine who made the first submission. But anyways, cannot wait for this game! Though it looks a bit too much like Eden in a way, which isn’t a bad thing.
