Uncharted 2 to Include Multiplayer, Beta Starts June 3rd

So the rumors are true and we can finally talk about it! As you’ve heard and read, UNCHARTED 2: Among Thieves will have both competitive and cooperative multiplayer modes.

We managed to keep the secret completely safe for over a year and a half, but right in the home stretch before the embargo lifted today, word got out all over the internet. Of course the leaked info was only the tip of the iceberg and there is a ton of coverage being released today on dozens and dozens of websites. So, pick your favorite videogame news site and go check out the coverage from our event last week. If print magazines are your thing, we’ve gotten word that we’ll also be in more than a few magazines around the world in the next few weeks.

If you’ve been looking closely at our interviews, our team here at Naughty Dog has been growing rapidly and we now have quite a few more Dogs on staff than when work finished on UNCHARTED: Drake’s Fortune. It shouldn’t be a surprise that we had to grow our studio to tackle the task of creating fully-realized multiplayer and co-op modes that would live up to our own high standards and do the UNCHARTED universe justice. I’m incredibly proud at the excellent work our team has done so far and it shows in the solid gameplay and incredible polish of the little slice we showed press last week. And if you’re dying to get your own hands on it, don’t worry, we’re having a multiplayer beta! It starts on June 3rd and you can get access to it through vouchers in inFamous, which goes on sale May 26th.

We’ll be back soon to talk more about our single player campaign – don’t think for a second we’ve forgotten about that! The rest of our team at Naughty Dog has been hard at work pushing our engine to its limits while creating a campaign that is more expansive and more ambitious than UNCHARTED: Drake’s Fortune. They’ve even learned a few tricks from our multiplayer and co-op development – truly a win-win situation as all aspects of UNCHARTED 2 are benefiting from the work we’re putting into both single player and multiplayer modes.

Competitive MP? Really?
Coop should be fun, but I’m not so sure about the competitive mode. Uncharted was a great game and worked really well as single player only. So I’m a bit skeptical about the addition of multiplayer.
But I also think that ND are one of the best (maybe even THE best!) developers around. So I hope for the best!
Nevertheless I can’t wait for that game to be released.

Oh Hell Yeah! Looks Fantastic! Honestly I dont know how xbots pull the veil over their own eyes and totally dont acknowledge some of these titles we got coming out. Oh well their loss. Infamous and Uncharted 2 is a day 1 purchase for me.

argh, I hate multi-player.
I’m a trophy [DELETED], and I have about 9 platinums right now, but I can’t stand playing multi-player for trophies. Please don’t include trophies for the online aspect. I’d have a Resistance 2 Platinum if it weren’t for that ridiculous “kill 10,000 people in competitive mode” trophy.

Please attempt to make the modes seamless ala Burnout Paradise.

You already have the no-loading thing down pat, so a seamless online interface is essential to maintaining the same level of uberness.

Wow! I’m so happy you noticed that… but not as happy as our rendering programmers will be! :) Screen space ambient occlusion is one of the many cool new features we added. Thanks for noticing!

another game that DOESNT need multiplayer, wish people wouldnt stop crying for it so developers wont have to keep throwing it into theyre games. Uncharted is great as a single player experience..co op is welcomed but competitive mode seems stupid…trying to be a tropical gears of war? stop it

Will all the inFAMOUS games have the vouchers or only the ones reserved in a specific store?

Also, are europeans gonna be able to play the beta?

You’ll be able to get a multiplayer beta voucher inside inFamous no matter where you purchase it.

And, yes, we’re working on getting the beta set up in Europe too (we’ll let you know as soon as we do).

OMFG i dont comment often but WOW that was AWESOME AWESOME…multiplayer in uncharted is gonna be amazing and im really glad there is a separate co-op experience…that way it doesnt interefere with the single player experience so thats great but wow just amazing! please have this video up for download this thursday on the psn store thanks! not naughty dogs but naughty gods!

So all I have to do is buy inFAMOUS to get into the beta? No pre-ordering, etc.

And you might as well remove the rockets right now. I’ll save you the headache of listening to everyone complain about them once the game comes out and you have to do it then.

Is there any assurance that SP didn’t take any hits from this? Because Uncharted 1 was just undoubtably one of my favorite games ever because of its story, characters, over all SP, to me it didn’t need MP or Co-op, so I must know… Was the SP’s quality sacrificed at all for these game modes? :/
