WipEout HD Update Racing to PSN

Posted by Daimion Pinnock // Producer, SCEA

New WipEout HD features

Hi everybody! I’m excited to bring to you news of an awesome update for WipEout HD. And perhaps the best news is you don’t have to wait long for it. Tomorrow, April 8, 2009, the V1.30 free update for WipEout HD will be available for download. The update will introduce a selection of new multiplayer features to the legendary anti-gravity racer. Check out the full details below.

Online Ranking

With over 50 ranks to progress through, there will be a new edge to online racing in WipEout HD. Your finishing position, speed class and the rank of your opponents will determine how many ranking points you are awarded as you strive to go from a Wipeout Trainee to a Wipeout Legend!

Podium Screen & Online Badges

  • A new podium screen will now display the top three finishers after each online race or tournament.
  • Regardless of whether you finish in the Top Three or not, every player has the chance of being awarded an ‘online badge’ in recognition of how they performed in the race.
  • There are 33 badges in total, examples of which are displayed here.

Connect easily with your friends

Game invites have now been introduced to WipEout HD to make it easy for you to invite your friends to join your game or for them to invite you! In addition, you will also be informed of any friends with an active online game and have the ability to join that game instantly!

Watch races in progress

If a race has started before you have had chance to join it, Spectator mode will allow you to watch that race. Within spectator mode, you can choose from four camera angles and select which ship to watch.

After the race has been completed, you will be taken back to the lobby with the other players so you can compete with them in the next race.

Additional Options

Lastly, to provide more variety when setting up an online race, WipEout HD has added a few additional options:

  • HUD Weapon Hints on/off.
  • Opponents – Choose to create a Public, Friends-only or Invite-only game.
  • Barrel Rolls on/off
  • Pilot Assist Allowed on/off
  • Number of laps (max 20)

We hope you enjoy these new features. And it you haven’t played WipEout HD in a while, now is a good time! We’ll see you online.

UPDATE: It has come to our attention that some players have encountered freezing during game loading. We have recognized this issue, have fixed it and apologize for any inconvenience. We hope you enjoy the new features that come with this update.

Cool, I completely forgot about this game. I appreciate the update, I’ll be playing this game again soon. :)

KazeEternal  |  April 7th, 2009 at 10:09 am

Looks like you fixed a few of my issues with the game, looks like I may start playing again once I’m done getting these Medal Based Trophies for KZ2 for my platinum.

stlthriot  |  April 7th, 2009 at 10:10 am

Always love to see updates/additions to games and even better when they are free! :)

Keep it up! Maybe even some new levels in the future. :D

triple_lei  |  April 7th, 2009 at 10:13 am

Barrel rolls on/off? I didn’t realize there were that many whiners. Personally I’d want barrel rolls to not cost as much shield energy, like in WipEout Pure or Pulse.

Toggling Pilot Assist is nice, though.

oh and plz let us fire Quakes backwards again kthxbye

****Cool Update! I had a Question about Wipeout Pure, i just downloaded it to my psp from the PS store. I see there is a bunch of Map Packs and other cool stuff. But I’m having bad luck getting these cool maps for Pure. I tried to do it from the in game option, and also from the PC, with no luck. Are the map pack gone or what. Thanks for your time. ********

JoE5005  |  April 7th, 2009 at 10:15 am

Awesome! I must admit, I don’t play near as much as I used to, but I’ll definitely check it out tomorrow!

BIG-SLUG  |  April 7th, 2009 at 10:18 am

17

ZildjianKX  |  April 7th, 2009 at 10:18 am

Great update. I just wish more people played it online. It seems like only the super hardcore play it online and kick my butt…

18

starBlinky01  |  April 7th, 2009 at 10:18 am

do you guys offer the ability to customize which weapons can be picked up? You should make it so you can customize weapons when creating a game. That would be awesome, I would make a game that only had boost pickups

Daimion, admit it. You saw my post on Wipeout Zone! xD
This can’t be a mere coincidence, one day after I post this :D

Congratulations on making me silent for a while now ;)

I’ll stick to playing your great game :)

That definitely happens to be a strange coincidence there, still it’s good to hear that we’ve been able to address some of the concerns that you had.. Happy Gaming ;o)

Just an FYI for the blog team: The badge image does not display correctly when viewed from the RSS feed.

24

StalkingSilence  |  April 7th, 2009 at 10:28 am

Wow – these will make going for more trophies much more enjoyable online. I haven’t really cracked into those. Thanks for the continued support!

25

haran_elessar  |  April 7th, 2009 at 10:29 am

Great! I was about to play this game again since now I have some free time…I love this game and now I’ll more of a reason to play it online.

Every PS3 owner should buy this game. It’s really great and fun. Great graphics, gameplay, sound and music. It has a very high replay value…and once you reach the higher classes each race is super exciting…firing that missile close to the finish line and hitting that boost pad to reach first…things like this happen all the time later on in the game and I love this game for that.

26

Bloody_Marcel  |  April 7th, 2009 at 10:29 am

Is the invite system “in-game” or via XMB (like Resident Evil 5)?

I guess I’ll get my answer tomorrow lol

27

DeathroW22  |  April 7th, 2009 at 10:31 am

Home launching would be great. This game is amazing, it is a shame it died off online – hopefully this update brings it back to life :)

28

Sekoku  |  April 7th, 2009 at 10:32 am

That’s great and all, but will it LET ME CONNECT TO THE ONLINE SERVERS!? 1.20 BROKE my connection to the servers to where I could not CONNECT AT ALL after trying for hours.

“There was a problem connecting. Please try again!”
“LOL YOU’RE ALREADY LOGGED IN! PLEASE TRY AGAIN IN A MOMENT!”

WTF? I wasn’t logged in, because I couldn’t even see a race!

Apparently, this is a problem with wifi-connections? Despite the fact that I never had a problem with 1.00 Wipeout HD online?

Fix it, or I’m not touching the game.

29

lakaiHIGH  |  April 7th, 2009 at 10:34 am

this gives me more reason to go back and get that platinum for this game. gosh but some of these are sickeningly hard!!!

thanks,
Lh

Moosehole  |  April 7th, 2009 at 10:43 am

Very cool stuff here… Unexpected updates that we don’t have to wait long for are always the best kind.

I’ll be checking this out tomorrow for sure.

31

Arcturian  |  April 7th, 2009 at 10:46 am

Could you drop us an update where you don’t have to hold X the whole time? My button’s steadily losing its sensitivity. :(

Daimion Pinnock replied on April 7, 2009 at 2:41 pm

Have you tried changing your button config, so that X is no longer used to accelerate?

32

remanutd5  |  April 7th, 2009 at 10:47 am

great update

33

Kittens323  |  April 7th, 2009 at 10:48 am

thnak you sony, i love this game!!

36

nummerfjorten  |  April 7th, 2009 at 10:55 am

Exactly what this game needs. Thank you so much for this amazing update to my favorite game.

37

dongkiru  |  April 7th, 2009 at 10:58 am

When I purchased WipEout HD back when it was first released, I was immediately disappointed in one missing feature: the Eliminator races from WipEout Pulse. Any plans to bring it back to HD?

38

PasteyMF  |  April 7th, 2009 at 10:59 am

Holy cow, Wipeout HD update from left field.

I’ve been waiting for new tracks for a loooong time now, even willing to shell out as much as $20 for a new full set of new tracks. Are you guys working on any DLC? The longevity of the game needs it.

39

RodSquad1167  |  April 7th, 2009 at 10:59 am

And once again, Sony’s useless new screenshot mode doesn’t make it into a game update.

40

zombie9  |  April 7th, 2009 at 11:01 am

Great Game. Some of the hardest trophy’s you will ever earn are in this game. Getting a 100% complete in trophys is not easy. But still one of the best racing games on PS3..

41

BlackLemonade  |  April 7th, 2009 at 11:02 am

Thanks for the update, though I was really hoping for some tweak on the FREAKISH difficulty of the game. Later stages just feel cheap.

42

Zookey  |  April 7th, 2009 at 11:08 am

Sugoi Yo!

43

Zookey  |  April 7th, 2009 at 11:09 am

@39 check your facts, WipeOut HD already supports taking screen prints–oh and tone down the vinegar a bit it makes you look trollish.

44

sandymac  |  April 7th, 2009 at 11:10 am

When are we going to get the version with the 3D support I’ve read about that was demoed at GDC?

45

isolatebody  |  April 7th, 2009 at 11:16 am

A reason for me to start playing this game again.

46

Shakh  |  April 7th, 2009 at 11:18 am

<3 Wipeout.

47

Kookyoo  |  April 7th, 2009 at 11:20 am

This update looks very usefull. Invites were a necessity, thanks a lot for this.

Did the badges link to trophies ?

Can we hope new content (new tracks) in a near future ?

48

Capt-Fury-  |  April 7th, 2009 at 11:24 am

awesome cant wait to jump online again

49

Enforcer_X  |  April 7th, 2009 at 11:24 am

SWEET!
I have to get back to playing this game!

@39 If it’s useless what are you crying about?

50

Manic_Craven  |  April 7th, 2009 at 11:25 am

It would be nice if there were some new tracks.
