Eric Lempel's Avatar + Posted by Eric Lempel on May 13, 2009 // VP, Sony Network Entertainment

Hello, I just wanted to provide everyone with a head’s up that the next PLAYSTATION 3 system software update (v.2.76) will be coming soon. This is a minor update that improves the playback quality of some PS3 format software.

I do agree with you.. I think When they get there they will get there and then it will probably out do whatever anyone else has…

@308

Obviously I was exagerating, but you get the point. I seriously doubt that any PS3 owner ever cared about playback quality or will ever see any difference at all. On other hand I do believe that what everyone here cares is not getting theirs system to brick with these frequent good for nothing updates. There’s just no point for us, owners, to update the system for minor fixes no one cares about.
I think they use minor fixes to mask security fixes.

Cross Game chat is one feature i have never been interested. I have seen it in action on the rival system. Generally the games i play i just see no point in it RPGs and fighters but too each their own. Only feature I want is on home and that is either voice chat for bowling lanes or poker tables or pool tables and i would be happy

I truly do believe that some blog posts are no-go zones when dealing with comments. It’s easy to understand why firmware update posts and PS Store posts (up until recently) have zero staff replies.

It really, really pisses me off to see people complain about this.

I’m sorry that they found a way to improve a feature to make things better. You’re all right; they should never, ever do anything like this. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, but if it is broke, don’t fix it.

Guys, please add the following features sometime in the near future:

System

* exFAT support for portable hard drives/USB mass storage devices. Right now we’re limited to FAT32, which only allows files that are 4 GB or smaller. I have movies on a portable hard drive that are larger than 4 GB, but I can’t watch them on my PS3 because the PS3 doesn’t understand exFAT!
* You should be able to perform background downloads of themes and firmware updates (just place them in the Game XMB to be installed/deleted later as is done on the PlayStation Portable).

Video

* Add MKV support (or add Divx 7 support, which I believe now does MKV).
* Allow people to make playlists of videos.

Audio

* Add support for high resolution audio, particularly in WAV files (96 KHz / 24-bit).
* Add support for FLAC, and as above, include support for high resolution multichannel audio (FLAC supports 5.1 audio and other goodies that would be nice to have).

PlayStation Network

* Allow people to have more than 100 friends.
* Provide a way to categorize and group your friends (“friend management”).

Can you please reconsider the timing of the updates. This is the second time in a row an update has happened right before Gran Turismo league racing is supposed to start.

http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board/message?board.id=granturismo&view=by_date_ascending&message.id=402169#M402169

These updates keep launching during peak gaming hours. Thanks to the heavy load on the system, it takes a long time to get updated, and we’re forced to scrap the nights events.

I appreciate Sony’s efforts to help games run, look and sound better.

However I agree with the masses and state “Please give us cross game chat”.

And actually I will go one further and say “please give us voice game chat, POST HASTE!”

Post Haste == at latest, before the holidays!

Sony always says “we hear you” however I don’t know why the most asked for features take so long to hit market. Especially when said features are a selling point in favor of the competition!

After this feature is instated, Skys the limit. clean up and add as much as you want. Untill then though I think other would agree that Cross Game Voice Chat should be a, if not THE number one priority!

I am still wondering why the Ps3 still don’t have every feature the psp has?

Where is Rss feed/podcast support like the psp has?

where is internet radio support like the ps3?

why don’t the ps3 have as many or at least the same visualaztions for music as the psp?

the interface looks the same so I don’t see why they cant just make the ps3 do something liek the psp.

I THought the ps3 would do everything it could so while I am at home I could use the same features and interface options.

also more options to set month colors for backgrounds it would be nice to assign my own colors for the back ground to change to each month and set weather it changes to black at night or not.

And after all its free, so i dont think we have the right to keep complaining over and over again every time there is a firmware update.

FIRMWARE UPDATE 2.76 ISSUE

Just to let you guys know I updated my PS3 firmware to 2.76 and now Playstation Home loads slower than before. Once you go to log in by hitting “X” on the main Home Beta page it will get to the word “initializing” then freezes. On my previous system everything worked fine, just the few Playstation Home bugs and errors. I searched thouroghly on the internet first though to see if any information could be found to address this issue including all troubleshooting caused from a PS3 system update causing issues in actual games. Just wanted to let all fellow beta testers know =)

Guys who are complaining about not getting cross game voice chat, shut up and look up the legal processes involved in giving us that first.
SONY CAN NOT give us that feature just yet, as microsoft have legal possesion of the easy way of doing it so SONY have to find some other way to do it.

And is this update safe? On the forums there’s a fair few people saying their games stopped playing after updating…

I have the newer PS3 without PS2 capability or camera card slots, this thing freezes in games more than I think it should for $400, PLEASE FIX!!! Another problem is constantly getting booted from PSNetwork, mainly at night. It is not just me, other people I am playing with are all being booted out the game at same time. PLEASE FIX!!! Other than these problems, I have no real issues, never been a PS fan, but I think I LOVE the PS3!!!

By now I think that Sony is not going to make huge firmware updates for the PS3 until at least saying something at their pre-E3 presser. At least that is what I think they will probably will do.

If not, I will be disappointed afterward, like I was last year. Game announcements were fine and all, but if they really want the PS3 to be the hub of everyone’s entertainment center, they need better functionality. Like to finally sack the team that makes their web browser(which I think everyone is aware by now that it is based on a mobile phone platform) and get another team to develop a REAL web browser on the PS3.

Can we have proper folder management for video and music? And its been over half a year that Ad-Hoc Party beta was launched in Japan, can we have a beta in Europe & USA too?

And, as a new and extremely useful feature, can we have the PS3 being able to sync our PSP save games and/or patches & DLC so we don’t have to play hunt the memory stick? Most PSP users have more than one stick and its hell trying to find which one has the latest save on it…
