What is up! I’m Matt Dahlgren, one of the product managers here at Capcom who gets to work on the Resident Evil franchise.

Today I get to blog about the PSone Resident Evil: Director’s Cut, which will be available for download tomorrow on PSN for $9.99.

I don’t think I’ll ever get to make a statement like this in a blog ever again.

The original Resident Evil is a game that defined my personality as a gamer for years to come. (I’ve got two others on my list of influential games, FF7 and Tekken, each for their respective genre – but I’ll keep this RE centered.)

The early experiences that you have in gaming set you up for what to expect in the future. If you have a positive enough experience, you attempt to find it time and time again – but I don’t think a game will ever affect me in the same way that this one did.

Going back and tinkering around with this game after so many years off got me thinking about how different gaming was 10 years ago in comparison to today. Games back then were hard. I remember dying at the first zombie while trying to figure out a weird control scheme, yet being mesmerized with the fact that I could control the outcome in a 3D environment. It took me a while to get the grasp of everything, and I died a lot, but I was so entertained by the experience that I refused to go to bed. I stayed up all night at a friend’s house, figuring out this weird mansion filled with zombies.

Controls then were not nearly as important as they are now. People were so mesmerized with the fact that they were experiencing something new, it didn’t matter that the graphics weren’t perfectly realistic and the acting was bad. It was a completely new experience, and better yet it could scare you. (ex. Dog + Window = Jump)

But what made this game cool is the fact that deep underneath the struggles you had to go through to progress, there was this gigantic intricate puzzle to figure out. How do you get to the next area with only 15 bullets? Which path is going to punish you, and which is going to let you survive? A lot of the time, if you chose the wrong path, you were just screwed, and you started over. If you didn’t have an ink ribbon on hand, or didn’t save recently, this could mean you have to re-do the last hour of gameplay. But it didn’t matter as much, because you learned from your mistakes and you could do things better the second time.

In addition, the environments were just sweet. I don’t think any game has re-created something as creepy as that first mansion. To me it is the ultimate classic scenario. So many questions to be had, and you fill them in piece by piece as you progress. Not everything may have made perfect sense, but either way, it was completely intriguing.

Playing as Chris Redfield and getting your shotgun is a great example. At this point, you have been playing for a while now, trying to survive with just a handgun. You go into a room, and see a shotgun on the wall. Sweet! Then you pick it up, and the ceiling comes down on you and makes a Chris pancake. (owned) Better hope you saved recently.

Getting that shotgun was a big time struggle. You had to find the broken shotgun, manage your inventory so you can actually hold it, figure out how to dodge or kill a ton of zombies through a long stretch of the mansion, so you can replace it on the wall and not die when trying to get a new weapon.

But when you get it…that shotgun is a score! You can now blow off zombie heads in a single shot, you just need to aim up. That weapon completely changes the gameplay experience from then on out. What makes that cool is once you finally figure out how to get the shotgun, there is such a strong sense of accomplishment. You earned your reward, it wasn’t just handed to you.

Nowadays if a key drops and someone has to spend 5 mins trying to find out where it goes, they just get pissed and stop playing. (Obviously over-exaggerated, but you can see the point I was making)

And the camera angles – sometimes you can’t even see down a hallway. That’s like putting you at a bigger disadvantage than being there in real life. Haha. I kept remembering that I wanted to kick a zombie in the chest because they were so slow. (If you played Outbreak, there’s one guy that could kick zombies in the chest. I always picked that guy. Heh) Not only was it difficult to see, even when I knew where the zombies were, they would get me ALL the time. It was difficult to move precisely. Very different experience than seeing a single enemy, lining up a headshot – done, progress. You were watching that zombie, trying to predict how he would move, how you could lure him to the side so you could sneak by. And you would still get caught.

But, if you played the original game, you have to admit that the control elements and camera angles helped heighten the experience. Resident Evil is all about putting you in situations that are hard to predict the outcome. It is a game that keeps you on your toes. Granted you may be frustrated that you can’t see the zombie, or even worse one of the “chop your head off in one swipe” hunters that is 5 feet in front you because the camera won’t let you, but those moments are pretty intense experiences because you don’t know what is going on.

(OMG – if you can aim up, shoot blind and hit a jumping hunter based on his sound alone, talk about satisfying. Haha)

Many people now would probably find this annoying. Games are so real, that if you can’t do anything you want, there’s something else out there that will let you. But for me playing this game as a kid, it defined me as a gamer. I wanted a challenge, because I felt I could do it, and other people couldn’t. Maybe that’s a bit arrogant, but isn’t that what getting ridiculous amounts of trophies or high scores is all about anyways? If anything didn’t give me that challenge – I was disappointed.

I think that sums up what Resident Evil is all about: Reward through harsh struggles. There’s a great sense of accomplishment when you can make it through the worst. I think Resident Evil does this to a “T”, and has continued to do so over the years.

(I also think they re-created a “this is completely new to me” experience when they did RE4, part of the reason I respect the franchise so much.)

I think there are a lot of gamers out there like me – many of them probably who hated on RE4/RE5 because it was different than the “old school” games. I disagree that the survival/horror element from Resident Evil is gone – it’s definitely still in there, it’s just evolved. And that doesn’t mean that the traditional survival horror of the early games is gone, it just means that the franchise has branched out to provide new experiences.

So, if you haven’t played this game, or want to go back and re-live a classic game you played as a kid like me, I highly recommend this game. If you are a current fan of Resident Evil, you can see many of the gameplay traits that evolved from this game. (You may not like the fact you can’t move and shoot simultaneously in RE5, but those controls are there for a reason, and help the game stay true to some of the classic elements of the franchise which are very evident in the early games.)

Also, if you were introduced to the series through Resident Evil 4 or 5, this game is a great opportunity to go back and experience the roots of the franchise. Both Chris and Jill, who appear in RE5, make their franchise debut in this game.

For those who don’t know what the Director’s Cut version is, this is the updated version of the original game which was released 18 months after the original. It features an “Arranged Mode” which essentially mixes up the item placement, camera angles, and enemy placement, to give people a different path through the game than found in the original 1996 version.

I think that is about enough for my “tribute” post. I can’t recommend this game highly enough – and that’s the gamer in me, not the marketing dude. Hope you enjoy.

  • Bah! I already have a portable RE1 on DS! When are we getting RE2 & 3?

  • @148 – well said

  • 9.99 is a little much but we’ll see. I don’t own this classic only the crappy remake on the cube.

  • Eh guys.. i cant seem to find it in the psn store.. anyone can help ? thanks a million

  • Epic win. Would like to see all major episodes in this series released.

  • Monkey, PSN won’t update till around 3 PM Pacific time Thursday.

I am looking forward to this, allthough I disagree with the author about the current RE games mainting survival horror roots. They don’t, you can’t move while shooting but so what? You follow a very very linear path (whatever happened to the exploration?)and bullets drop from enemies, I never felt the need to conserve ammo. RE5 is more like GOW. I still like the game, it is super fun to play with your friends, but there is no scare factor in it at all.

  • Thanks for ur reply ! So hm.. im from singapore actually. Do u have any idea what time roughly ?

  • I officially declare this the Summer of Awsome PSOne Classic releases! This will be the first one I’ve purchased.

I remember first playing this game about a year after release. I would come home from my job at McD around midnight and play for the next few hours. Let me tell you, there was nothing more frightning then RE in your basement with the lights out at 1 am. Add to that all the Coke and caffine in my system and when that dog jumped through the window, I swear to god I wet myself just a little.

  • No idea about singapore. But from where I am it will update in around 9 hours, give or take.

  • I appreciated reading your nostalgic input on the game, but I can’t overlook the fact that the PRICE IS RIDICULOUS and you can get it cheaper on eBay.

  • umm yeah people should complain about the price as other psn markets do NOT have premium priced games they are all the same rate. if the japanese and hong kong stores had premium pricing it would be fine but thtey dont so i’m complaining when is sony gonna learn that people have access to all the stores and until they are each treated equal(no video store for my psn buds outside the us…lame) we have a right to complain. as a consumer we have the right to voice obviously unfair treatment. and sadly for sony most of us will do the voicing with our wallets and just not buy it…including me.

  • WE NEED MORE CLASSICS!!

    Where’s MGS and FF VII!?

I’m happy things are starting to pick up but what was the hold up in the past or even now, huh?

I’m sorry for ranting but every time I visit the JPSN I see all these awesome PSone games and then I look at ours and all we have is a couple here and there.

  • 10 bucks? no thanks, it should be $6. Like in Japan and the rest of the PSOne Classics.

Is it even the DualShock version?

  • In my opinion, all PS1 Classics should be $5.99 regardless of what the title is. Also is there a specific reason RE & SotN are $9.99?

  • Finally some real good PSone games in the store. But not cool with the 10 buck price tag, we have been getting all these crap PS1 for 5 and now they wanna set a trend with this 10 for good games. Thats not cool I already have all 3 orginal RE, why can’t I just rip them and put them on my PSP or PS3 why should I have to buy this over again, when I already own this. Unless Sony drops it to 5 bucks, no dice.

  • Totally getting this now that I have a PSP (can’t see myself playing it on the PS3). Gonna have to shoot for beating it in under 3 hours ;-)

  • Hey, Matt.
I’m curious about something and was wondering if you could answer a question for me. The Resident Evil remake and Resident Evil Zero that both appeared on the Nintendo Gamecube, will they ever appear on another system or will they for eternity be exclusive to Nintendo? I’d love to see those game released on the PSN one day as well as Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes (even though I know that one is not part of you guys). I just can’t get myself to dish out $10 for such an outdated game. The remake I’d buy in a second. Thanks!

  • And another dev decides their game is worth more than everyone else’s… PS1 games are not $10, sorry. Leave it to capcom to even screw this one up.

  • “They have entered the mansion, where they thought it was safe. Yet…”

Great game, too bad I already own RE1, RE1:Directors Cut, RE1 Saturn, and the REmake for Gamecube, and have beaten the original game with only the combat knife in under 2 hours… Otherwise I would be all over this. This is a must for all you fools who have only played RE4 and RE5. I trust Capcom will be putting out RE2 and 3 on the PSN at a later date as well. Don’t you dare pass them up people!

  • @165 You shouldn’t be allowed to play MGS now that you called the original “such and outdated game”… go away you unseasoned gamer you.

  • Now that is a PSone game that should shut up the PSone fanboys for a while.

At least this is becomeing a regular thing like in the old days! Good work! How about some more PSP demos!?

IE new PSP games are going to hit in the fall so it would be good to get some demos out for them first:

    StarWars: Elite Squardron

    Final Fantasy: Dissia

Jack & Daxtar: The Lost Frontier

    SOCOM: Fire Team Bravo 3

    Rock Band Unplugged

ALl of these games should have demos on PSN! Work on it please SONY! Games that get demos on the PSP sell ten times better then ones that don’t!

  • @150 rysamson,

It’s this series that gets me riled, up I apologize (also it being 4:30 in the morning when I posted). It’s just so terrible.

  • Anyway, the tone of the whole blog post is derisive towards people who somehow have the nerve to dislike RE. He calls us impatient for not putting up with frustrating and cheap deaths, terrible controls, obnoxious camera angles, and everything else that’s plagued 3D Capcom games. Like I said, any semblence of challenge in the game is artificial, since you’re fighting your controller more than you’re fighting any zombies onscreen (or offscreen).

  • I have been waiting for this for years and it comes back at $9.99 When every other PSone Games is 5.99. Capcom your really starting to bug me with all of your Xtra ADD ONS AND nickel and diming us to death (and I use to love capcom). I might pick up but will have to think about it. :(

  • sweet!!! its about freagin now. I’ve been waiting for this and FF7

  • @173 I agree, this guy should just keep the debunking of people’s negative comments on the controls to himself. The game’s charm does lie in its dated (but at the time, revolutionary) camera and controls. Many gamers are die-hard fans of the original “3D” control scheme of Resident Evil, and learned to master it. It is TRUE that people don’t have patience for that anymore, because modern control schemes are so smooth, but yeah, no need to try to convert people.

I still love the original Resident Evil, but I have beaten it so many times I can’t finish a run anymore without boring myself. One thing worth noting, I think this was the only RE where you could actually EXPLODE a zombie’s legs with the shotgun. Arguably more satisfying than a headshot, even if you have to waste another bullet to finish off the crawling zombie that is a result of the mutilation. The blood/gore in this game was also the best for PS1 REs, only to be out done by RE4 with the chunky headshots and chainsaw decapitations.

In the end, RE is not for everyone, but it is for many of us. Buy it or don’t buy it, but stop debating it, and both sides of the debate should cry moar.

  • I’m a very heavy hardcore Resident evil fan. Totally going to buy this for my new system and hope to find Resident Evil 3 available too. I know what you mean by people getting pissed off for trying to find a key for a certain door. Also the comment about not having a ink ribbon. LOL I know those feelings. Camera angles? Who cares! It was a great game. Resident Evil 2 & 3 were also amazing. Graphics are a huge thing now. Its a great demand, but people forgot about plot and story. The voice acting…Eh? “If I didn’t come sooner, you’ll been a Jill sandwich.” Quotes like that are classic. Also, the file “4. Ichy,Tasty.” has been seen on t-shirts and stickers. All in all, great game and great blog post. Later!

  • the price tag is the only thing stopping this from being a must buy. how is that ssfhdrmx is $15 and this is $10 when its just a re-release. cant wait for marvel vs capcom. cant imagine what the price tag for that “premium” title will be. i guess $20 would be fair since its in demand so much. (btw this is all sarcasm capcom is ripping us off. a re release should be 5.99 like the rest. u should only raise the price if ur gonna raise the quality)

  • Capcom/Sony listen up,
Satisfy the people and make your money with this RE1 release (FINALLY BTW), but NEXT here’s what I suggest is your best possible move.

    1. Release RE2 and RE3 for PS1 classics.
    2. Announce a PSP EXCLUSIVE RE game.
    3. Re-release the gamecube remake of RE1 on PSN with HD and trophy support. This can sell of $29.99 and people will pay.
    4. Finally, release some info on RE6 currently in development.

    I thought you’d like that…;)

  • Capcom,

If you want people to buy these things instead of just playing them in the free PSX emulators, you need to provide more value-add. Compared to the free/open source emulators that do upscaling and anti-aliasing, these screenshots are absolutely horrible.

In addition, emulation provides an opportunity to re-author a few key textures since the texture RAM constraints are basically non-existent. This has worked really well in a number of fan projects of PSX and N64 games. (See http://www.n64redux.com/ or http://z6.invisionfree.com/Resident_Evil_4_PC/index.php?showtopic=1631&st=0 for just a few examples.)

Please learn from the 360’s lead on this. A simple linear filter and a stretch doesn’t count as value-add — it actually makes things worse. Make something better than what we can get for free and then I’d be happy to pay.

  • Agree with comment #180. Yes Capcom, you will sell plenty of RE1 classic for $9.99. BUT, add widescreen support, maybe some HD tweaks, and trophy support? Now you’ve got something people may be willing to pay $14.99 for. I know i would, for the best PS1 classics!

  • Not available in today’s update of the EU store. :(

  • Capcom/Sony,

Nice job and IT’S ABOUT FREAKIN’ TIME. Christ you’ve had this in the Japan PSN for YEARS now…

Mark my words, the below steps would be wise for you to follow.

    1. Release RE2 and RE3 for PS1 classics (at a below normal $4.99 rate to make up for your VERY SHADDY $9.99 price increase on RE:DC).

    2. Announce a PSP EXCLUSIVE Resident Evil game. Again, FINALLY – do you know how long overdue this one is..

    3. Re-release the gamecube remake of RE1 on PSN with HD and trophy support. This can sell at $29.99 and people will pay!

    4. Finally, release some info on RE6 currently in development.

I’d $hit my pants if you did these simple, smart suggestions, but given your slow and questionable track record (charging for RE5 survivor DLC), I doubt you will even read this let alone consider it.

    Peace.

  • Do we know if this is the version of RE DC with dual shock support or not? Just wondering because the music was changed in that one. I’d rather have the original RE DC with the original music.

  • When the PSN will be updated? :x

  • OH MY GOD!!! I CANT WAIT!!! PUT THE FIRST 3 RESIDENT EVILS OUT FOR DOWNLOAD AND THEN WE’D REALLY LOVE YOU LOL!!! KUDOS!

  • I cant find this on PSN

  • It’s driving me crazy. I hope they put it up soon. I’ve been checking for it ever since around noon eastern time.

  • SagasRedemption

    Well, it’s 9pm eastern where I’m at.
Been debatign between this or a different
bit of downloadable goodness on one of my other consoles.

Starting to look like psn has made my choice for me sicne they have decided not to update today after all.

It’s a shame honestly. Was looking forward to finally playing the the only re I haven’t touched.

  • Looks Like No Resident Evil for us, it still didnt pop up, its 9:54 eastern =(

  • another lie by capcom and sony, its fricken 10 o clock in the west fn coast and theres STILL NO F***ING Resident Evil.

  • wow, there was actually something coming out on the psn that people were ACTUALLY ASKING FOR and geuss what folks, sony thought today would be a good day to be f***ing lazy and not update the us store THANKS SONY

  • SagasRedemption

@skull 10:22 on the east coast. this sucks.
I was looking forward to this all week
but looks like sony and capcom doesn’t
    want our money today.

  • lol so True

  • CloudStrife2009

I’m getting more and more disappointed! You would think they would have been more enthusiastic to take our money since it is $10 not $6, but i guess they don’t care……….or who knows. Maybe they are negotiating to bring it to $6, since people were complaining…..but that’s just a random guess

  • SagasRedemption

    @ cloud I agree.

    slightly off topic,
I’d be less aggitated if it gets delayed a day or two BUT they tell us rather than no update and no word as to why.

Since they are going with the latter
I’v had to waste time throughout the day to repeatedly check the store, when, if they had said “no update” or “update delayed”
I would not have had to.

  • i wonder how long its gonna take =l pissed Off

  • If i called into work today for tommorow and said i was gonna come in between 3 and 6 whenever i feel like it they would be pissed, but if i said i was coming in between 3 and 6 AND DIDNT F***KING SHOW UP ID BE F***KING FIRED! heres your pink slip sony, ||
