Introducing .detuned

Posted by Rusty Buchert // Sr. Producer, Sony Santa Monica Studios

.deTuned

It’s Rusty Buchert from SCEA Santa Monica again and I’m here to talk to you about another experiment from the demoscene that will be coming down the pipeline later this year. This one is called .detuned and is made by .theprodukkt, who has been involved in the demoscene for quite a while now. They have done some interesting pieces, which includes .kkrieger, an FPS that is all done with one 96k file.

.detuned is a bit of an odd beast that offers an abstract and surreal interactive experience like nothing else. It is not exactly a game or an art piece like Linger in Shadows. It allows you to create your own visual to accompany your favorite music tracks on the XMB, and using the SIXAXIS™ Wireless Controller, you will be able to manipulate the given scene by interacting with and modifying a man and his world. It even lets you tweak your music as you play with it.

Check out some of the photos below.

It’s all in your hands!

That’s all I can offer for now. Continue to check here for the latest updates!

When are we getting the GPS accessory for PSP over here? I just put $60 down on the japanese one because I’m tired of waiting for you people.

That last picture reminds me of a Death From Above 1979 album. (with the elephants)

54

Bloody_Marcel  |  May 1st, 2009 at 12:58 pm

Is this going to sit under the Music category of the XMB or under the Game one like Linger in Shadow?

60

Gringo234  |  May 1st, 2009 at 1:08 pm

Madriiax  |  May 1st, 2009 at 2:05 pm

Well, it’s about time. It’s INSANE that the built in visualizers on the PS3 don’t use the SIXAXIS at all… like, come on guys. It’s disappointing overall how little interaction there is.

SHOW US WHAT THE PS3 CAN DO, PEOPLE!

SOOPERGOOMAN187  |  May 1st, 2009 at 2:05 pm

I LOVE UNIQUE CONCEPTS LIKE THIS!

I was sold since I saw the first screenshot! lol

(This was “teased” in an older episode of Qore!)

I can’t wait to experience this awesome new title! I love this kind of stuff! It seems like a very neat concept, and it’s so… DIFFERENT!

I’m starting to uncontrollably smile excessively! lol

CAN’T WAIT! :D

digplans  |  May 1st, 2009 at 2:56 pm

I’m extremely stoked for this. Interactive arts (via “video games”) need more credibility, and there have been some interesting PSN titles that have really up’d that. Keep pushing the boundaries!

liketoski  |  May 1st, 2009 at 2:59 pm

I liked Linger in the Shadows so I’m interested in this. Besides, Trophies are always welcome :p

77

blindrocket  |  May 1st, 2009 at 4:29 pm

Looks very good. :)

Powie  |  May 1st, 2009 at 4:34 pm

Having followed, and enjoyed the demoscene since the Commodore 64 days this will be a day one purchase for me. I think it’s awesome that Sony as well as the Demoscene are working together to help make the PS3 the best console on the planet.

79

freeluv  |  May 1st, 2009 at 7:29 pm

they need to have a better music player/organizer on ps3 bcuz the xmb is horrible if u have a lot of music saved on ur hard drive

80

Kren420  |  May 1st, 2009 at 8:11 pm

You have my attention.

Now tell me more.

81

Chronotic  |  May 1st, 2009 at 9:07 pm

Awesome news! .theprodukkt have amazed me with their demos and what they can do with such a small file size. Great to see Sony take risks with innovative ideas such as this :)

joostin  |  May 1st, 2009 at 10:58 pm

Custom Music player + Custom Visualization + Some trippy experiences = priceless

I have no words for it, such originality!

84

Coheno  |  May 2nd, 2009 at 6:32 am

Wauw…seems interesting! If it’s priced like Linger in Shadows, I’ll take it…

85

HawkEyes1  |  May 2nd, 2009 at 10:59 am

SCEA YOU SHOULD CONCENTRATE ON BRINGING THE NAMCO ARCADES OVER HERE WITH XMB SUPPORT FOR ALL OUR GAMES IN HOME AND THE PSN NETWORK! ITS NOT FUNNY ANYMORE YOU HAD 2 1/2 YEARS TO BRING THIS TO US BUT I’M GUESSING YOU DON’T CARE..PATHETIC!..BY THE WAY THE ONLY WORTH MENTIOING ARCADE GAME WOULD BE ICE BREAKER AND THAT TRAIN GAME THE REST IS CRAP!!

86

KSPRAYDAD  |  May 2nd, 2009 at 3:26 pm

@85

Insightful.

87

Sekoku  |  May 2nd, 2009 at 8:02 pm

If it’s $2 and more interactive than Linger in Shadows, SOLD.

Otherwise, meh.

88

afrosheen  |  May 3rd, 2009 at 1:00 am

Little treats like this are the reason I love the PSN. Top quality games, videos and demoscene bits, incredible. LiS is still one of my favorites.

Here’s hoping more of the demoscene gets to participate and the PS3 becomes the hardware of choice for demo groups. BTW kkrieger was amazing, that was the first thing I thought of when I heard theprodukkt was involved. An FPS game with fully procedural generated textures in a measly 96k file.

Might want to encourage someone to work on more interesting visualizations for the XMB while you guys are at it. :)

89

AtomicNutshot  |  May 3rd, 2009 at 5:55 am

I’ll drop a couple of bucks on this DigitalDali

@85 This product isn’t made by NAMCO or SONY.

HEJJJ12  |  May 3rd, 2009 at 6:28 am

Awesome :D I want it NOW! :D

91

your_moms_man  |  May 3rd, 2009 at 11:42 pm

LOST me @ like “Linger in Shadows”..unless this is a freebie..

92

Mycosynth  |  May 4th, 2009 at 4:38 am

Would be nice to see a authoring tool for PC and a demoplayer for PS3.

That would add some usergenerated content.

93

kolobear  |  May 4th, 2009 at 8:56 am

In the PS2 and PS3 I really missed the music visualizer that was available in the original Playstation. You could move objects around in a variety of ways. I had a lot of fun with that when I was younger.

This looks like something I would have gotten into back then. I’m not sure that it appeals to me now that I’m older, but I think it’s great that it’s being made for the current generation.

Hi All,

I am sorry for being delayed getting back to you all. I was in quarentine for a bit last week over the whole swine flu thing. Good news is I’m clean, just lost a few days. :S

Cheers

This looks really interesting, will love playing with it.

On a similar note, can’t we also have a visualiser that’s like g-force, the xbox one, etc? I’d really like this.
