UNCHARTED 2: Among Thieves Multiplayer Beta Starts June 3

Justin Richmond's Avatar + Posted by Justin Richmond on Jun 01, 2009 // Multiplayer Designer, Naughty Dog

For the past few years, we here at Naughty Dog have been cranking away at creating not only a new single player adventure for Nathan Drake, but an awesome new online experience as well. It has taken blood, sweat, and possibly even a few tears to get to this point, but on June 3, you can get the first crack at a small slice of the multiplayer modes we’ll pack into the full game.

Everything in the Uncharted 2 multiplayer experience has been designed to get you into the game and playing quickly, so you can just skip this blog post if you’re really that impatient. Just kidding.

When you boot up the beta you’ll find we’ve included 2 playlists for you to try out: co-op and competitive. If you’ve got friends, we’ve made it easy to play together – just hit the triangle button to see your PSN friends list and you can send them an invite, join their party, or just check out their profile. Keep in mind that for the beta, the party size is limited to 5 for competitive and 3 for co-op!

Let’s give you a quick rundown of our two playlists so you can be ready day one…

plunder-enemies-sully plunder-chloe-w-treasure

The competitive playlists contains 2 maps, with 2 game types available on each: Deathmatch and Plunder. Deathmatch is pretty similar to what you’ve come to expect out of “team deathmatch” in other games. Plunder is Naughty Dog’s take on “capture the flag.” At the start of a round, we’ve placed a treasure in a neutral location on the map and the first team to bring it back to their capture chest scores a point – three points to win. What takes this mode into the UNCHARTED universe? Easy; you can now throw the treasure quite a ways in any direction – in some cases, you’ll HAVE to if you want to score a point.

The biggest thing to keep in mind while playing in competitive matches is to keep thinking three dimensionally. There are many, many different places to climb, hide, and shoot from above ground level. The best advice I can give: remember to look up. And keep moving – if you stay in one place too long, you are likely to have your neck snapped from behind or even be pulled off the ledge you are perched on!

co-op-chloe-drake

As for the cooperative playlist, we’ve put in a snippet of one of our co-op experiences. Our co-op setups are really rocking right now with three people playing as Drake, Sully, and Chloe as they fight their way through a war-torn city to recover a treasure worth a fortune. In this mode, teamwork is everything and running off alone is a sure way to get killed. Thankfully, in most cases – except for, say, being blown up —you’re not out of the game. If you’ve been downed, you can be revived by one of the other players before your timer runs out! If everyone wipes, you start at the last checkpoint you passed, but be careful, if everyone wipes three times the match is over and you have to start over again. Oh, and keep an eye out on the combo meter on the upper right of the screen. Keep your combo meter increasing by getting kills, picking up treasures or completing objectives and you’ll get a multiplier to the points and cash you’re accumulating. Enemy kills are worth different point amounts depending on what gun you used, so experiment to get the best results. I’ll give you a hint, pistols are awesome.

co-op-drake-n-enemy-flying

A quick note on your rank and the Profile screen. You are ranked on the total amount of online cash you have earned. This includes both the co-op and competitive modes, so you can rank up either way. In competitive, you earn cash for defeating enemies, and earning medals. In co-op, you earn cash for your point score and by earning medals. You can see your rank both next to your name in the lobby and scoreboard, as well as in the Profile screen. In the Profile screen you can see your rank and how far until the next level, you can select Boosters to give yourself a leg up in competitive multiplayer, and select your player skins for competitive multiplayer. Remember to select your boosters before playing competitive multiplayer, and be aware that boosters do not apply in the co-op playlist.

Before I go, I want to let you know that we are asking all of you for your help. To make this the best game it can possibly be, we want to hear from you. Comments, concerns, things you like, things you hate, we want to hear it all. Keep an eye on the “message of the day screen” in our beta to find out where to leave us feedback and for dates and times you can play with the Dogs!

Hope to see you in the beta!

I have my Betacode, but I’m in Europe (The Netherlands).

Will I be able to use my code at midnight (which is 13 and a half hours away) over here, or do I have to wait untill it’s the 3rd of June in the US (which is almost 24 hours away)?

I just have one question, and please if anyone can answer it, will there be a beta for Australian Gamers? I preordered Infamous and it comes out June 4th here but I don’t think it will have the Uncharted 2 Beta code.

Hey, Justin, I have a question.

Is there any way you guys can make the invite system the way it was in Resident Evil 5?

If you haven’t played it, it allowed you to invite friends from the In-Game XMB, rather than from an in-game menu. You just scrolled over to your friends list, hit triangle, and picked invite from the list of options (on the same menu as Create Message, View Profile, Block, Delete etc.)

Much handier than in-game menus, especially as it meant you could invite at any time during gameplay.

@bob52

the next MGS game, Metal Gear Rising IS NOT exclusive. The ESRB already confirmed it to be released on PC, PS3 & 360 nor did Kojima announce it would be released exclusively on 360 at MS Press Conference. Don’t be so quick to jump to conclusions.

+ Red_Wolf92 on June 2nd, 2009 at 8:11 am said:

well that issue has already been addressed so disregard my last comment. First time posting ^_^b. How did MGS get brought up in the first place…?

Anywayz…can’t wait for the beat. See you guys online.

Oh it’s tomorrow is it? My email from Game said June 2nd and I been trying my code all day.

Oh well, I’ll try be more patient (difficult since this is a beta of my most wanted game). Guess I’ll continue on my 2nd playthrough of inFamous (evil this time) which I had initially pre-ordered primarily for the Uncharted code but it turned out to be a fantastic game too.

The competitive mode sounds great but it’s the co-op that sounds much more appealing to me and is one of the main reasons I love multiplayer LittleBigPlanet. Shame I don’t think anyone on my small PSN friend list will have the Uncharted beta.

Watching the ticker below the MGS: Peacewalker for PSP trailer, G4 says that “Even Wells, Co-President of Naughty Dog, announced that the multiplayer beta of Uncharted 2: Among Thieves will launch tonight.” Time is 1:53p CDT on June 2. Enjoy all :)

I still have not received my beta code offered by qore and the beta had now started and from what i see some have got them some have not.

also i have heard a rumor that we will not get them for a bit yet which can not be true if some have them can someone please fill me in on when i might expect my email with my code?

Skunka so you have not got one either eh wtf where are our codes?

I have been waiting for this beta as it will be my first and I have been a qore subscriber for some time now yet I am not surprised sony has been lacking in respect towards those who keep then in business when will they stop promising us thing to get our money then not deliver?

I will keep checking for my code and if i do not receive one I will just toss it on the ever building pile of disappointment I have in sony

if only there where another gaming system out there (no xbox dose not count im not a child who parent buy his systems and get stuck with the cheapest one then go online and talk about how great it is alll the while wishing it was a ps3 lmao)

5:11 am still no beta code in my email guess us qore subscribers are not important enough well for sure I will not be buying this game nor continue my qore subscription when its time

and by some chance should it come in the future this still stands since the beta has started already we all should have had this code in advance when the episode came out

the only reason it was not is so they could get more subscribers by offering it to people who subscribed by a certain date and even so they could have put the code or a link to get the code in the episode so that even if you did subscribe just for this offer it would be there non of this email crap that screws me out of being part of the beta at the same time as most others i say most since i know a lot of qore subscribers with this same problem which is really sad since most of us have been long time subscribers and so far this has been the only thing good and we did not get it like really does any one really play linger and bowling was fun for what a day and yea early demos every once in a blue moon and those are rarely any good

to all you non qore subscribers I have seen post how sony treats us subscribers better think again and put your credit card back in your pocket

I think it would be a great help to add a radar when playing multiplayer so that it is easier to keep track of other players.

Second: It would be nice to see a stats page for, number of total kills/deaths etc and accuracy.

Thirdly: Could you add a score board to look at your stats and your friends stats along with world rankings etc and maybe put in a clan system to give more value to the hardcore guys.

Lastly: please add an option in the menus to select whether you would like to pick: “Close matchmaking”, “Any Matchmaking” or “Quality Matchmaking”

Thanks a lot for the BETA it’s great so far and with these improvements and others it will soon be one of my fav online games
