Introducing ModNation Racers: Play, Create, and Share on the Race Track

134 0

Greetings from United Front Games, in Vancouver British Columbia. We’re really excited to finally be able to talk to you about ModNation Racers. It’s rare as developers that you get the opportunity to make the game you’ve always dreamt of creating, but that’s the fantastic situation that we’re in. We wanted to make a game that had the pick up and play accessibility of a kart game, with the depth and handling of a classic racer. So, we made ModNation Racers, a fresh take on a classic kart racing game that empowers you, the player, to personalize the entire game.

ModNation Racers

Vinyl art & collector toys were an inspiration for us as we set out to create a game about creativity and self expression. It was in this spirit of creativity that we developed our character, kart and track editors. We wanted to give the user the ability to make whatever they wanted, but do so in a way that felt like playing and not working. For example, you just drive and the track is created behind you, so it’s intuitive and fun.

An expression that came up early in development was “anonymity to superstardom”, which is exactly how we want the user to feel. You create your ideal character, kart or track, then upload and share it with the world. Next thing you know, you’re ranked as one of the top designers in the ModNation community!

In the coming months, we’ll be able to share a lot more information with you.

  • I’m really looking forward to this game and I hope I make it into the inevitable beta. ;)

  • this one looks extremely fun.

  • day 1 man! i think this will be better than LBP~~~~~~~

  • I am extremely exicited to see another game in the “Play, Create, Share” genre.

Thank you so much for having this vision!

I look forward to seeing more on the game!

  • Cool, fellow Vancouverites. Good luck at E3!

  • Absolutely amazing!
will it be a Downloadable game or Blue ray?

  • Cannot wait for this game. Word to the devs: follow LBP’s example of continuously releasing bits of extra content (ie: character objects, level objects, car objects, etc) and your game will NEVER get old. This is the closest the PS will get to having Mario Kart on our systems!

    LBP on PSP!!!
    MnR on PSP!!!

  • I didn’t see any footage on this game yet… (I’m still downloading the press conference on my PS3)

But, from what I hear, this is a pretty impressive game! Can’t wait to see it!

  • will it be a PSN game or a full disc-based game? Is there local multiplayer? How many tracks available from the start?

  • Will there be a beta for this game cause I would really like to get my hands on this?

  • ThreeLeggedFreak

Please add some camera options while driving, it’s too close right now for me. Also custom soundtracks please. This game has potential, lots of it. Including some Sony characters on this would guarantee it would sell, Sackboy, Ratchet and co should be there, as well as introduce this new nameless character.

  • looks like a lot of fun lol , another racer game on my collection lol, Motorstorm series , Gran Turismo 5 prologue , Wipeout HD and soon to add Modnation Racers , its not that i dont love the genre you know lol

  • Poopookakabumbum

Are you guys going to be as ridiculously strict and arbitrarily censor levels, like in Little Big Planet? Or are you actually going to allow some freedom and creativity with this game?

  • This was my favorite game of E3, it looks so awesome. Can’t wait!

  • is this going to be a full game, or a psn download?

  • I want to create the Sidhe Alien.

This game is totally riping off Gripshift.

Not even the best part of Gripshift either: The single player platforming.

  • Those characters are adorable!

Man please tell me this is coming out soon and not scheduled to be released and delayed, released and delayed and then not come with the features they were talking about during the production of Little Big Planet that we’re still waiting to have patched in (like online create mode!)

  • The game looks great! I love LBP, and I’m pretty sure I’ll love this game too!

  • looks like acool racer with lbp elements…. AWESOME!

  • poisonedsodapop

I love the obvious “borrowing” of the Play, Create, Share tagline.

  • My anticipation for this game rose steadily throughout its presentation. But I’d still like to see how deep that editor is – what kind of obstacles there are, whether you can make short cuts and multi-level tracks, etc. Basically, more info please!

  • looks great! little big racing! can’t wait.

  • Very nice, unfortunetly (how do you write that?) I don’t like race games. Mainly because I suck at them :-D

  • This seriously should have been LittleBigRacers and used Sackboys. Still looks great though.

  • O-oh, look what you started LittleBigPlanet, look what you started. Now we’ll have to much fun with too many types of this kind of gaming.

Yeeesh, thanks a lot MM. lol

  • I see a lot of folks asking about whether it’ll be a PSN title or if it’ll be Blu-Ray… Well, according to the Wikipedia page it’s going to come on Blu-Ray, which is only better! Blu-Ray = More content :D

I’m defenetly going to try to come into some kind of beta when that time comes!

I can’t wait to Race, Create, And Share!

I was thinking about this and from a marketing perspective, I think it would’ve been better if Sony changed the name of the game to Little Big Racers and changed those characters to sackboys and sackgirls.

It would be much easier to market now and they went already introduced the sackboy, why introduce another sack thing?

  • Couldn’t this game use LBP sack-boys? If we buy a bunch of costumes for sack-boys, it would be nice to be able to use them is multiple games!

Hi, I’m one of the guys who announced ModNation Racers at the Sony Press Conference. We really wanted to reveal much more to you, but we just didn’t have enough time. (Also, we have to save some surprises for later!)

There are a few things I can clear up right now though.

The Track Studio is industrial strength, with all of the power and fine control that our in-house track designers need. You’ll be able to redrive sections, as well as tweak width, banking, and elevation. Also, you can select individual objects and then move, scale, and rotate them.

There’ll be far too much content to make ModNation Racers a downloadable game. So we’re shipping the final game on Blu-Ray.

Finally, the PlayStation was the only logical destination for our ModNation Racers. LittleBigPlanet paved the way for Play Create Share. MediaMolecule and United Front Games get along great. Also, the PS3 is perfectly suited to our game. We needed awesome graphics to make ModNation look great, a hard drive in every box to store lots of your and your friends’ creations, and free online access to let absolutely everyone connect and share.

That’s all for now. Thanks again for making ModNation Racers the talk of the town this week!

  • Thanks for the info :)

  • Is this going to have 4-player split screen? If so I’m definitely going to have to pick it up.

  • my most anticipated game for 2010(yes, even more than GOWIII)

  • Saw this at E3 (thanks to PSN for providing an HD version of it). Loved LittleBigPlanet, but this seems more “create-friendly” as it was shown on screen! I hope SONY shows more advertising for this!

  • Hi everybody, i totally agree you guys & gals, ofcourse it has the potential to be a awesome game. But, it’ll only compete with the likes of MK if it contains the two features most fans would like in this game. William, thankyou for your information so far, is it possible for you to answer us the two big questions, everyone’s dying to know.

Firstly, “will it have a four player offline multiplayer?”

Second, “will there be a battle mode??”(i.e similar to battle mode of MK, ofcourse to addition creating your battle arenas and stuff like that, is a total MK killer, i know most people will agree.)

I understand theres alot of stuff your’re not allowed to say at the moment. So whatever you can say to us is much appriciated. Also if these can’t be answered atm, could you please tell us when they can? When will the new information be revealed and where.
Thanks in advance, this game is totally on my radar!!
