Yeah, I’m just not quite sure how this FW update deserved the 2.80 designation. I just wish that Sony would inform us exactly about what the FW updates are actually doing. Even if it is just a small fix, let us know that. Fixing something is a good thing.
Also, while we’re on the topic of functionality, I really wish all PS3’s had the same capabilities (read: PS2 BC). My launch 20Gb died on me last October (YLOD) and I really miss having that feature in my new PS3.
Oh well. Maybe someday…

These update threads so make my week. It full of people who “demand” something of Sony. Others that say “Sony wasted my time”. Sony engineering took months/weeks/hours to create a firmware that they wanted to bring features to. Your now wasting their time with the bickering. They read the blog, just put well thoughts out, calm and rational thoughts into firmware features. It might works, there is no way the death threats will get you cross XMB chat.
Sorry twindad. you must have misread the clear consensus here: people have been asking for features. Sony just isn’t listening. And why would they anyway? think about it. Useless employees fail (Eric). Customers complain. Eric hears but don’t listen. Upper management doesn’t hear crap, and only sees numbers of sales rising, albeit dwindling behind the other consoles. It’s all very simple economics actually – stop purchasing Sony items. By 3.00, if nothing substantial on the media front is released, I’m bailing. X360 is doing a wayy better job than Sony. SOrry.

I agree that complaining obviously gets you nowhere. If they had any intention of adding the types of features everyone has wanted for the past three years, I think they would have done it by now. Sony is apparently looking in a different direction for their console, diligently trying to figure out… what it is… that their loyal customers (cough)… might want their system to do… :|

I am going to have to jump on board with the WTF question of why this is a 2.8 update and not a 2.75 instead. Especially since it more or less appears to be a patch for a patch from the last update. I’d love to be a fly on the wall in the R&D and Marketing departments. I’m sure it’s comedy b3y0nd anything you could make up on your own.
hope this doesn’t screw up anything that works already. Fingers crossed.

The update is not required to go online. I’m still on v2.76 and can log into the PSN just fine. Quit crying about it and just don’t DL it if you don’t want to.

upgraded my PS3 with a Samsung 250GB disk, i had a Western Digital 250 but that disk had a sleep issue-in game, it tries to sleep while playing a game “maybe someone at sony might look at it?”
model type is: WD2500bevs-22usto
the Samsung HM250JI works flawlessly, i usually only buy Hitachi/Samsung/Toshiba “maxtor/seagate and WD offer very poor quality products, i’ve had maxtor/seagates in several servers always fail within 2, and WD has sleeping issue’s under linux which cause them to fail within 6months”.
Samsung in servers: pretty slow without cache, but extremely reliable “personally, zero defects out of 150+ (500GB/1TB disks)
Samsung in Desktops: cheap, fast enough and reliable.
Hitachi in servers: fast and reliable (under hitachi name: 1 defect out of 150+ (250GB/500GB disks)
Hitachi in Desktops: fast for a price and reliable.
Maxtor/Seagate: slow cache, low/cheap quality motor/disk (in server 100+ disk failure rate: 80 failed.. stay clear of Maxtor/Seagate extremely low budget crap)

the PS3 is a high-quality product compared to the xbox360, i have an xbox360 elite (latest 65nm gpu) and it is loud! and u can’t replace the hdd yourself (without voiding Live/warranty) and you can’t play online without paying 59$/euro a year!
microsoft is clearly paying people to spurt complete and utter non-sense,
like: i am going to the xbox360, because my arm hurts.
or: the xbox360 is doing way better: i am dumping my PS3 “i doubt anyone who has a PS3, would even say that…”
the xbox360’s services are overpriced and actually make the whole xbox360 590$/euro/pounds more “xbox live” expensive in 10 years than a PS3 or a PC.
what do u get for 59$/euro/pounds a year? yeah that’s right: NOTHING!

I have to say, as usual, i’m disappointed in the firmware update, still no mention of ps2 backwards compatibility when you know people want it, or do you intend to sell our games back to us again(such as having to buy dark cloud again even though i have the disk)?
You and i both know that would be suicide in many people’s eyes, just pointing that out, people aren’t sheep, they can think for themselves.
All me and anyone else wants is a direct statement from sony saying your looking into it or not, but i guess business wise saying you aren’t would be stupid, so i’ll give you that.
One thing to remember though, many of the 60GB ps3’s are failing, the owners on average do care about B/C, if you completely ignore that, it could cost you in the long run, then of course is the ps2 owners that still won’t leave the ps2 or have lost loyalty.
Sorry for the rant, but this is where to speak it, i doubt you’ll listen to any of us, but still, i try.
As for current issues, please fix the ps1 backwards compatibility of the tomb raider games.

– PlayStation One Titles loading times have decreased.

– The Open Remote Play Hack has been scrambled for security reasons.
– The Bug that allowed Some online friends to be displayed as Offline has been fixed on small level.
– XMB Moves Much more smoother when used in-game.
This Update is a Optional Update, a user who has updated to 2.76 is not required to update to 2.80.

1. If you want features, that is fine. But don’t complain like Firmware updates are only for ‘new features’ because they are NOT!
2. If you bought a PS3 that doesn’t play PS2 games, don’t hold your breath for Sony to upgrade it so you can. Sorry, you knew it didn’t play PS2 games the day you bought it, stop crying.
3. Complaining that you are forced to download this, you are NOT forced.
4. Saying that 360 gets XX features in the fall. Well, good for them. Why not wait for Sony’s fall update? Obviously they have something planned.
Also the ‘hidden feature’ in the update might be Playstation Cloud, not cross game chat. So don’t hold your breath.
Firstly, my heart goes out to everyone whose PS3’s have been bricked due to this update. Secondly, i’m fine with these minor updates, anything that gets fixed is a good reason to download an update. However SONY, two things must be done to prevent uproar among consumers. First, you MUST release a change log so we know exactly why we’re wasting 10 minutes waiting for our ps3 to upgrade. We would love to know the things you’re fixing to give us a better experience on the PS3. Also, you MUST make available a system recovery utility so that we don’t have to worry our PS3’s will go belly up by downloading a firmware update. It doesn’t have to be that hard…just release a disc image online that when burned and inserted to the PS3 restores the OS and the firmware to a certain point. Unless you have a bunch of toe picking hillbillies at your R&D department (or in your PR department as well) this shouldn’t be too difficult.
p.s. I’d like to know what exactly Eric Lempel does in his position.

Just wanted to give everyone a quick heads up that a PS3 firmware update (v2.42) is now available for download. This update improves the playback quality of some PLAYSTATION 3 and PlayStation format software.
The last ‘REAL’ firmware update which was worth writing about was in JUNE of last year when they introduces the ingame XMB and Trophys, both of which an existing console already had.
Seriously do you know what SCEA should do? they should fire Eric Lempel and that Soa^ Jack Tretton for making up crap at every E3-show that we have watched in the past because most if not all have been lies with broken promises!..The Summer of 09 is starting to really be a big kick in the face by Fraudulent/Phony Entertainment Of America!…Keep it up SCEA you losers no really good updates means no PS3!.. I like my console but I’m not impressed with the way your handling the Situation with No VidZone Damn it already Exclusive to Europe is bull^^^^!! I really want to have the ability to play my own music off the PS3 hard drive ”anywhere” and in ”any game” without the need for developers to intervene and patch their games to support doing this.
In game custom soundtracks sometimes (not all) makes a huge difference to how you play games, this is clearly proved playing Burnout Paradise. I just hope you guys at Sony enable this feature across all PS titles.

I think Sony needs the fallowing for PS3 support:
1. Vista/Windows 7 32bit/64bit OS support for the media server.
2. Fix the media server drop outs over PSN when connected to PSN log ins.
3. Add support for Windows Media Player 11 files.
4. Add support for HD videos/Photos from Cameras via USB sticks.

I was wondering why I wasn’t stopped from signing in. So it’s optional, first one I heard of being optional.
What a bunch of whiney 12 year old sheeple. Get stuffed, the whole lot of you. None of you, the most vocal and completely illiterate ones, have the slightest understanding of what a software development cycle even is. Sony doesn’t owe you anything and your misspelled, textspeak rants are all weak and powerless.
Go outside for 15 minutes while your daddy’s connection gets you your sony update internets, you cake-eating fatties.
This firmware sends the rock band and guitar hero controller to channels 6 and 7 of the bluetooth and they don’t work on those channels. We have now to manually reasign them to channels 1 to 4.

Thanks for the update – but we could do with a real changelog. :) (..just remove the security- related problems, and the things that might cause the system to fail.. in case the purely hypothetical chance would occur that people would deliberately crash their ps3 to get the warranty replaced, or just for the hell of it. Something I really can’t imagine would ever happen, obviously, from reading the comments here).

hello everyone. i have a problem on my ps3 and hopin somebody to help me. i just updated my ps3 to the new ver.2.80 and i’ve been getting errors during the operation update.(8002f1f9)and it also says on the screen that i have to contact a technical support…please help for this one and tell me what exactly i should do..tnx guys

If it was me, I would contact technical support. Oh, and when no one answers the phone (because they probably won’t – you’ll just get a recording telling you were to mail your $400 paper weight), I would strongly consider loading up your ps3, driving it to the closest large body of water, and giving it your best posisible throw.
Then get back in the car, drive yourself to the nearest video game retailer, and pick up an Xbox 360. That way, all the problems you see everyone complaining about on this blog will be fixed and all the features they want to see will be available to you.
In essence, all of your prayers will be answered. Oh, how I wish I had never sold my Xbox for this hunk of ****. (tear)…

I’ve pretty much give up on the PS3 updates after my first PS3 died I got the yellow light of death. And they usually make you almost wait a year before there’s a major update and the PSP updates are just dumb they’ve had the same wed browser cents the first PSP. Don’t get me wrong I love my PSP & PS3 but I don’t like the fact that it’s can just die at any time. It makes me wonder if there’s a microchip that is programmed to die in a certain amount of use. I know this doesn’t really have any thing to do with version 2.80 but I know a lot of people are having this problem I had to pay $200 to get it fixed
