An Introduction to Trine, Coming Soon to PSN

Posted by Olivier Vermeille // Product Manager, Nobilis

Hi everyone,

My name is Olivier; I work for Nobilis, a publishing company which is based in Lyon, France. I’m a Product Manager and I’m here to tell you about an exciting new release for PlayStation Store: Trine.

Trine is a fantasy action and platform game that combines 2D gameplay with 3D graphics. The game is balanced between action and puzzle-solving sequences. Three heroes are bound to a mysterious device called the Trine in a quest to save the kingdom from evil, and the player can at any time freely choose whoever is best suited for the upcoming challenge or puzzle.

Trine, 1

Because physics is at the core of the gameplay, there is not just one solution for each puzzle; in fact you can even find a way the developers have never thought of!

You can control one of the three characters of the game and switch at any time to solve the puzzles in a different manner. Each character has a unique ability, so choose the one you think is best suited for the situation.

The Wizard can create and move objects around to build a bridge or crush his enemies with a box. The Thief uses her bow to attack and her grappling hook to move quickly and avoid dangerous traps. The Warrior is better suited for close combat and tends to hit before he thinks!

So you can play through the 16 levels of the game, switching from character to character, but you can also play with one or two friends in a cooperative mode. Play the whole adventure together and find new solutions by combining your characters’ powers.

Trine, 2

How about asking the Wizard to create a box so the Thief can use it with her grappling hook? Or why don’t you make the Wizard levitate you, while you, The Warrior, destroy your enemies that were too high to reach in the first place?

With 3 players, the range of options widens: ask the Thief to use her bow to fire at your enemies, while the Warrior protects her with his shield and the Wizards creates boxes on top of the skeletons’ heads to crush them!

Possibilities are huge and this trailer will show you what sort of things you can do in Trine.

Coming soon to the PlayStation Store for PS3. For sure…you’ll love it!

Hey is there any chance we may be able to use a mouse & keyboard combo since this is originally a PC game :)

Hi ssp_619,

Since the PSN version was specifically developped for the PS3, you will only be able to use the PS3 controllers with Trine.

I’m supposing Wipeout HD Fury isn’t coming out today. Will we at least get this game today? Been anxiously waiting since … I don’t know … the initial release date set back in June.

NeoUltima  |  July 9th, 2009 at 12:05 pm

I thought this was supposed to be out by now :(

anotherdae  |  July 9th, 2009 at 12:07 pm

107

Sindred  |  July 9th, 2009 at 12:17 pm

This game looks seriously awesome. Didn’t even know about this.

108

Enforcer_X  |  July 9th, 2009 at 12:20 pm

@46
CORRECTION!
All games submitted for Sony approval after Jan. 01, 2009 will have trophies.

This means games submitted to Sony for approval before Jan. 01, 2009 but not released could release without trophies well into 2009.

You don’t have to be a D about it.

I purchased the PC version and this game is a blast to play with friends. I really enjoyed it and am probably going to pick it up on the ps3 as well. It’ll be nice to play on a big screen tv instead of huddling by a monitor.

The game on PC is only local co-op so I assume that it will be the same here. (All the previews also point to this)

The game is actually quite substantial in length even if it only has “16″ levels. The levels can take quite some time.

$20 is a great deal for this game imo.

Trine looks like an interesting game thus far. Let’s just hope the price justify the mean.

112

TheRootBeerKing  |  July 9th, 2009 at 12:48 pm

Too bad this game is 20 dollars, if it was 10 dollars cheaper I’d buy it for sure. Oh well!

113

saiyanknight87  |  July 9th, 2009 at 12:55 pm

y’all better make this co-op local it’s like sony don’t believe in online and co-op being in the same game anymore it’s one or the other!

114

mafecto  |  July 9th, 2009 at 12:56 pm

Yawn.

Just release the freaking game already. Enough of this teasing nonsense.

115

Rez33  |  July 9th, 2009 at 1:09 pm

This looks like a fantastic game. I’m excited to play it!

116

Antonisbob  |  July 9th, 2009 at 1:13 pm

117

RichterNYR35  |  July 9th, 2009 at 1:13 pm

so it seems like a co-op version of lost vikings

118

ShadOforce  |  July 9th, 2009 at 1:18 pm

Release date for Trine and Fat Princess, please.

119

OldKai  |  July 9th, 2009 at 1:28 pm

@116: What?

Anyway, from what I understand, this will contain local co-op, but since it’s on PSN and will cost $20, I’m really going to need the demo first, I have the money but that’s not the point.

120

Antonisbob  |  July 9th, 2009 at 1:31 pm

never mind, it was jsut updated and i jsut bought BattleFeild 1943..

121

INTVGene  |  July 9th, 2009 at 1:38 pm

Not in the store today. You suck Sony.

122

Xoonaka  |  July 9th, 2009 at 2:04 pm

Le sigh. Apparently Nobilis isn’t one of those awesome publishers that likes to respond to questions and comments… they’re certainly no Capcom, TikiGames, or Q Games…

Maybe one of the nice developer sorts will make an account and comment on their behalf.

Hello Xoonaka,

I’m sorry I couldn’t answer sooner, but there are a lot of comments both on this blog and on the European blog so I’m doing it as fast as i can to answer every question :)

There is also the time difference which makes it all the more difficult !

123

jncasanova  |  July 9th, 2009 at 2:24 pm

Are there bosses?

124

Ouren  |  July 9th, 2009 at 2:49 pm

First day buy.

125

lisAsmart  |  July 9th, 2009 at 3:09 pm

I thought this game was PC only… This is sweet! I kinda want this, but I’ll have to pass, I need money for Fat Princess, and my PSN account is already empty.

126

TriangleOffense  |  July 9th, 2009 at 3:51 pm

Hi TriangleOffense,

Trine will be released at the end of this month !

I hope you’ll enjoy it !

127

dam6655  |  July 9th, 2009 at 4:17 pm

No online co-op what a waste of a product.

128

Miles514  |  July 9th, 2009 at 4:59 pm

Wow! Looks amazing! I would just like to know if the co-op is offline or online? Either way im buying it.

Oliver Vermeille's Avatar

Oliver Vermeille replied on July 10, 2009 at 7:48 am

Hi Miles514,

The co-op mode for Trine is offline and it’s really fun to play with one or two friends helping you :)

129

Kirkpad  |  July 9th, 2009 at 5:23 pm

@109 “The game is actually quite substantial in length even if it only has “16″ levels. The levels can take quite some time.”

Thanks for pointing this out, the $20 tag (being priced like a full game with a platinum) is probably worth the cash. Day one buy?

Game looks fabulous. The time first I’ve heard of it.

130

Snamaro  |  July 9th, 2009 at 6:08 pm

I hate the words “Comming Soon” why just they give us the release date ¬¬

131

Tezasaurus  |  July 9th, 2009 at 6:48 pm

I’d buy it for $20 if it had online co-op. Local only? That’s a stretch.

132

Ikki_Fenix  |  July 9th, 2009 at 7:25 pm

looks cool

133

electronicpart  |  July 9th, 2009 at 8:24 pm

when ? How much ? demo ?

134

Onna76_NL  |  July 9th, 2009 at 10:55 pm

Is the co-op mode online? Or am I asking a stupid question? These type of games are my most favorites. Phantasy, platform, puzzle in 1 game is total win! Its my most anticipated PSN game thusfar so can’t wait when it releases. *Hopes for July the 31st, my birthday xD*

Hi Onna76_NL,

The co-op mode will be offline and it’s not a stupid question, I guess I wasn’t clear enough in the blog entry since many people asked the same question :)

You should be able to download Trine before your birthday ;)

135

Onna76_NL  |  July 9th, 2009 at 10:56 pm

Hi Berae,

Actually it’s going to be release by the end of this month so the wait is almost over ;)

138

mcx  |  July 10th, 2009 at 5:52 am

Really intrested in this game. Looks like a lot of fun.

139

Xoonaka  |  July 10th, 2009 at 7:27 am

Whoa, Oliver, slow down! No need to answer everyone’s price/date question, they can see your responses to the other folks!

I like the pep though!

140

Xoonaka  |  July 10th, 2009 at 7:42 am

I fear I am too late… Oliver is on a mission now. Godspeed, Olly!

Haha thanks Xoonaka :)

I prefer to answer as many people as possible so they don’t have to search the whole page for one particular response :)

141

LN_MEXWARRIOR  |  July 10th, 2009 at 8:18 am

$19.99 and no OPTION for custom soundtracks means a no no… Maybe when you guys have a sale for 10 dollars. Thanks though.

142

Raacky  |  July 10th, 2009 at 8:27 am

this game looks amazing, however kind of dissapointed with local only multiplayer =\ still will be fun..cant wait to get it

143

Enigma777  |  July 10th, 2009 at 11:07 am

Wait, does this game have a Platinum trophy?

144

EliteCobra718  |  July 10th, 2009 at 11:10 am

Now this game is something fresh, i cant wait to get this. Again Sony breaking barriers and creating fresh gaming content.

145

LpSquall  |  July 10th, 2009 at 11:51 am

Why doesn’t this game support online co-op? This game clearly defines what an online co-op experience can be. Is it something that will be implemented in the future?

146

skot071907  |  July 10th, 2009 at 12:04 pm

Gamespot.com has this game listed to come out today (july 10th). I was getting my hopes up for it. I thought it sounded funny being that they update the store on thursdays and rarely deviate from that. It better be real soon! good thing i was able to download the demo on my lap top.

147

Xoonaka  |  July 10th, 2009 at 1:17 pm

@ LpSquall

I heard they’re considering doing an XBLA port, but that they might be requiring them to have online multiplayer. It’s feasible if they go through the trouble of making that, they might consider patching the PC and PS3 versions with it as well to drum up more sales.

148

Onna76_NL  |  July 11th, 2009 at 7:42 am

@Oliver, thanks for your answer. Ow that’s too bad. Most of my gaming friends are namely “online”.

Ow great, that’ll be a very nice treat for myself for my birthday *hihi*.

149

Onna76_NL  |  July 11th, 2009 at 7:44 am

LBP online co-op was a lot of fun, made me play a lot, while I usually don’t like online gaming. This game was screaming for the same kind of online fun really :-)
