Hi everyone, PlayStation 3 (PS3) firmware update (v3.00) adds a number of great new features that we’re excited to share with you. The latest update incorporates changes that improve navigation on your PS3. First, you’ll notice some cosmetic changes to the design of the XMB (Xross Media Bar). We’ve enhanced the look and feel of the XMB so that it’s easier and even more intuitive to use. We’ve also added network improvements and personalization options to help enhance your PS3 experience.
Additional highlights from update 3.00 include:
- “What’s New” – The “Information Board” will be replaced with a “What’s New” section, which allows you to enjoy interactive PlayStation news every time you start the PS3 system. Located under the PlayStation Network icon, “What’s New” displays the latest and greatest game, video, PlayStation Network and PlayStation news and releases, as well as your recently played games, in a sleek, new animated format.
- Status Indicator – In the top right corner we’ve added an indicator bar, which displays your user icon, friend icon, the number of friends you have online and a small message icon to let you know if you have any new messages. The indicator also includes a scrolling ticker that features the latest news from PlayStation Network. In addition, when you press the PS button, the battery life indicator will no longer cover up the clock.
- Friends List – Now your PlayStation Network friends will appear in a slightly redesigned format on your Friends List. Also, messages will now be viewable from each of your friends’ respective profiles.
- PlayStation Store Shortcuts – We’ve added a handy shortcut icon to the PlayStation Store under both the Game and Video categories so you can access the latest content quickly and easily.
- Personalization – Personalize your PS3 with new dynamic custom themes and avatars. Dynamic themes as well as free and premium avatars will be available through PlayStation Store. A dynamic theme takes your screen to a whole new level as it incorporates animated objects into the background.
- Trophies – Showcasing your hard earned trophies just got better. Update 3.00 gives game developers the ability to modify how they display trophies for add-on content. Base and add-on game trophies will continue to be combined into a single list so you can see where you stand in a game as a whole. Within that list, trophies will be broken out into subcategories—base trophies and add-on trophies—that way, you can easily view the percentage of your base game trophy collection, and separately track your trophy progress in add-on packs. Look for this enhancement to be included in upcoming games.

the ps3 does its job most people complain am sure if sony gets they heads down well get the most owt the ps3, we can oready do alot on it but the features needs improving most people lyk the old style better there should be an option were we can change to the old settings to me its fine but there should not be anymore ps3 network updates they need to improve other things now lyk the web an make a IM collum on the xmb, need a option to send music files or videos to PSN contact in message box that would be fine with me AM HAPPY ABOUT THE REST
did any one else notice that when you start a game it no longer says ‘Playstation 3’ any more?? it only used to show up for just less than a second xD….
Umm Sony? Can you give me some MGS4 and RE5 stuff to put into my Sony? MGS is pretty much Sony exclusive and I’ve been dying for some trophies/avatars/better themes??!!
Amazing I just downloaded this update and it couldn’t get any better this update is certainly what the ps3 needed.
Friends list looks terrible please give us an option to adjust the ugly font and huge icons please!!!!

3.0 update is alright, but there a few things that needs to be done
1.The icons need to be smaller but with the new active themes being a great feature all the attention goes to the icons now they should be active as well once we scroll past them they should bounce or something to that instinct.
2. Friend list they grey box needs to match the color of the original xmb background since ever one will use a theme anyway the colored friend list box would give a nice contrast instead of ugly gray boxes.
Also place trophy information current games played inside the friend list box
And a option to jump into the game there playing if it’s online game
3. Cross game chat please this is what we all want I don’t know what’s holding it up but that ea rumor is starting to sink in and I’m thinking it might have some merit.
I like some things about the download, and like most hate others. Wish we had this or that.
I want choices. Friends list this way or that. If I want two PS store icons or just one.
I wouldnt mind something new to look at while listening to CDs or MP3s.
Good job on what you have done. Just a voice. 1 in a 1,000,000.

Have to say I’m not that impressed with the new update, only wish I could go back to previous version, hate the larger fonts and icons, dont like the new look friends list, quite capable of remembering the last 3 games I played, over the top with store shortcuts….DISAPPOINTED

Great to see the s.w update – but where is the much-discussed, yet-to-be-seenm PlayTV attachment (allowing tuning and recording TV channels ? ) ?
I have heard some talk about BC for PS2 games. If you had bought the PS3 when it had first come out you would have it. But fo rthose that didn’t, why Sony? Why? I would like to play Spyro the Dragon and Killzone. Just to recap, I have the 60 gig so I can do that, but others don’t and they may want to play too.
Quite silly update, it should be 2.9.something not 3.00, it added nothing we are waiting for. For me personally the best thing you could do is implementing HDMI-CEC in old PS3, or just saying->its not possible. Slim has it, why old PS3 dont? I want to control video playback with just TV controller
i have installed the new update 3.00 and cant get bbc iplayer my mate has updated too and he has it does anyone have the same problem ?

Eh, sounds great and all, but I’m honestly more excited about the opportunity to play GoW 1/2 on PS3, since I kinda missed out on that series on PS2. Just kinda wondering how difficult it is to get a PS2 game reworked for the PS3, because there were some pretty rare and good PS2 games that really deserve a second look… ;)

I thinking of selling my ps3 on ebay and buy an elite.Sony have seriously ruined it with these lame firmware updates, why would you add sparkles on the once known sleek looking XMB, i know it can be switched off but seriously how old do you think we are, there is not one thing that’s useful for me as a gamer, Sony seem to forget this is a gaming console.

Damn Sony you’ve really missed the mark by continuing to exclude cross-game voice chat.
I own both a 360 and PS3. The 360 may be a piece of junk hardware wise, but it kicks the PS3’s ass in terms of online features and community. Sure you’ve gotta pay a subscription fee – but being able to chat in a party of mates whilst playing makes all the difference between a successful console and one that is shiny but has no balls.
Trophy support is lame too. I use trophies (as well as achievements) to chart progress through a game, the last 4 games I’ve brought for the PS3 have no trophy support whatsoever when the 360 versions of the same game do. I’ll be swapping my games for their better supported versions this weekend.

Please fix the disappearing menu items. This ruins the usability of the PS3 as DLNA media client. Also, if you are going to force the ticker and PlayStation store links *cough* advertisements on us, why aren’t they updating to show yesterday’s store update?

wow over 1900 comments with 99% stating why this update sucks. why the f%ck should we be bombarded with advertising when we PAID for our ps3?? you turned a classy machine into a crappy one and now everyone’s pissed
I really hope this is read by the developers. The only thing I miss is that when starting a game the playstation 3 logo and the tune doesn’t appear anymore. Thats the only thing i really miss. Everything else is really great. congrats, if you added not only dinamic themes but also if the avatars were dinamic like 360 avatars it would be great. PS3 forever
Ok here is my opinion and I hope that Sony will read it. I think the animated backgrounds are great but what I really miss I the possibility to have the old Opening. I mean the Thing before the XMB is loaded. The new opening is ugly, especially the new PS3 logo.
Would be cool to decide what will be shown there, because some like the new logo and people who have the old console want to have the old logo, me included^^. It is not just the opening, but also the “Playstation 3” after starting a game please bring it back sony, I really liked it and I’m shure that I’m not the only one.
I’m so disappointed with this firmware update. What the heck happened to music navigation? It’s just awful now. Previously, when playing a music file, I could hit the PS3 button and navigate among my other music files. Now, with the 3.0 update, I am only given the choice of stopping my music in order to navigate to my other files, when I hit the PS3 button. And Sony purported that the new firmware IMPROVED navigation? This is a major step backwards. What were they thinking?
3.0 update will not let me view pics and play music, bummed, anybody know a way around this?
This backdate/update other than providing a foundation for future PREMIUM content like Dynamic Themes and such, hasn’t made PS3 owners very happy.
Common, Changing the interface. What was wrong with it before? Sure, the friends list maybe, fixed up to show more information; but those white boxes ?
Don’t get me started with the PlayStation Store icons, 3 of them, I knew where to go to get for new content before.
I really hope, you guys make some kind of update that will restore the system to a previous look. As it was just fine.
A minor suggestion..: It maybe nice if any future updates included more OPTIONS to disable certain features.

A major Suggestion..:Why not charge a yearly PSN membership fee..? Say, $10 bucks…

Yes, please, please give us an option to turn off the mandatory, enforced background blur. It is bad for the eyes if you use a custom wallpaper. Seriously. Absolutely grotesque and headache inducing. Ta.
Hi. Everthing is cool but there is one thing. Pre 3.0 I was able to play music from my harddrive and then press the PS button and go back out and choose another song or do something else. With the 3.0 update I press the same button and i get the option to stop playback or continue. I can’t return to the XMB. This is really a bummer since I use my PS3 mainly as a media player and not a game player. Please fix or address it ASAP.
PS: No wonder MS/Xbox 360 is better!!!
Well from what I can see version 3.0 still has a MAJOR flaw in it. The internet browser is still absolutely useless because it keeps popping up a “Do you want to run the plugin” message. Nobody cares. Just get rid of it. YES we all want to run the plugin. I was hoping in 3.0 to see a way to disable this.

Guys, you’ve been making a great work on XMB but there is a big lack of community feature that is the core of the Xbox360 success. I’m talking about the capability of talk/key with my friends without the obligation to quit game to do this.
PS3 has a better hardware set and built in capabilities but missing that feature i’ve just told you Xbox360 will continuing seducing who likes to talk with friends while playing, like me, for example.

My PS3 has 5 USB ports (vertical stand with built-in 2 port usb hub)
500gb internal hard drive
external harddrives
memory card readers which are not on new ps3’s today
ps1/ps2 backwards compatability+upscaling
and much more
The only reason I have a PS3 is so I can use it to easily view my collection of hundreds to thousands of video files which are x264 ac3 encoded and use the AVC codec to play…we need real updates sony we need updates that benefit us and not take away our features its not our fault that the majority of the world’s population doesn’t know much about a PC…keep all features and only add features when mandatory..do you honestly think a little bigger font size and 2 annoying shortcuts to the ps store would make things better for everyone..another reason why you fail!
now when i look at all my videos the titles all disappear which is what I and the rest of the hardcore PS3 users dont need…hey i dont care about u giving playstation network for free because i dont need
make an add or remove feature such as ADD OR REMOVE PROGRAMS like in windows pc operating systems where I am able to customize all features to allow them to be used or not…like if i had microsoft office installed and wanted to remove the Excel application for example, i would be able to go in that list and disable it/remove it and keep the rest

the only real problem i have with firmware update 3.00 is
the playstation store shortcut which is located in the videos section, the bigger font size, the whole entire ticker in the top right corner (everything about it) it was better showing just the time and i know if you change your date and time settings to a different year (from 2009 to anything else in the future like 2067 for example) then restart your ps3 and it will not display the dumb moving text of whatever it says is new and the whats new feature is kind of lame and pointless however it doesnt really affect me the way it does the other features i stated above…and the most one i hate is the part where im not scrolling through the xmb and the titles for everything disappear!!!!!!!!! that is far by the worst u should be ashamed of yourselves sony or whoever makes the firmware updates…
if you added something like support for more codecs for example, itll be valued by the users like me who use their ps3 for videos and to the users that dont use theirs for videos much or at all, it wont effect them at all because they wouldnt even know…ill never buy another sony console or any console again in my life
you’re taking away things I paid the most money for..i paid more money to you for my ps3 than the people today who are buying you know that as a fact..the discontinued ones were a higher price because it contained more components/features etc.
dont take anything the wrong way but its true ..continuing to do updates for this stuff like in 3.00 will be the downfall of sony playstation now and in the future its already begun believe it or not..the only people who can fix this is yourselves (workers of sony) FIX this
add or remove feature should be like:
located in the ‘System Settings’
when clicked, should bring up a screen that shows a whole list of PS3 features and functions to display or not to display.
like in the list would be things like..
– playstation store shortcuts.
– text disappearance.
– photo gallery
– playstation home
then u tick or untick a tiny box located next to each option, when it is ticked it would indicate that the feature is set to NOT display.
and by doing this..it would allow us to not have to see certain text/icons/unwanted things on our screens.
but the things would still be installed and available to have by the same add or remove feature where i could then easily re-use certain things if i chose to…but i dont need some of things ever so i wouldnt want to have to see and deal with them when im using my PS3 because its pointless
please just do the add or remove thing itll be very appreciated by all ps3 users worldwide believe it or not and it wouldnt be hard to access and configure either..!!!!!
firmware update 3.00 makes the ps3 look and feel like a worthless item.
