  • THIS THING IS UGLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Then again im used to my ole 60gb (thats 500gb now) and my (1st edition) 80gb (thats 320gb now). Glad I got these when I did, Smaller = still no BC even after Sony patented the technology to do it, plus a shorter, deeper, much UGLIER, matte black design. Glad you guys found a cheaper way to produce it but will this be like the small PS2 and lose out on things you can do with it?

  • cross game chat? do you guys mean, the chat room that you can send to your friends? that already exists

  • Awesome !!!! I might buy it n give the one I already have to my bro =D

  • know i can buy a new ps3 old one broke and 360 is sooo boring to play

  • To little to late. Where’s the shine?

  • B.C PLEASE PLEASE

  • finally its here ive waited since april, good thing is’ i just sold my 40 g ps3 for 275.00 two wks ago. i just have to wait a couple more weeks. im getting my ps3 slim for 25.00 more hell yeah

  • Jack nailed that right on the head way to go guys

  • i have a psp2000 god of war, wow! it made me really happy. The new PS3 was very expensive during this year thats why i did not buy it.Now a slim PS3 for 299!… well, you got another buyer READY!-me.i better get a sony wide screen TV too.hmmmm….

  • if PS3 slim remain 299, i believe it would be sold out the first day of sale.

  • YES, YES, I knew sony wouldn’t let us down, now may be Activision and Ubisoft wont leave us, Good job sony, keep up the work, and stay on the path of ruining the X360

  • Ok, this may be a stupid question, and many of you may not be concerned at all about this, but I am just curious if this will affect the play of the RockBand setup since it only has 2 USB ports. I know the plugins for the RockBand accessories each have another USB on them, and I’m guessing it is probably for situations such as these, but is it possible that the ports could become overloaded? Just curious…

  • look great! i want one

  • Hey guys on the main sight it still says ps3 is 499$ maybe you should fix it :p

  • @562 – Valid concern, but even the PS3s with 4 USB ports are just 2-USB systems (with a splitter).

Also, remember USB hubs? They exist because USB is designed to stem to multiple objects at once. So, it should be fine :)

  • woo time for me to finally buy a ps3! Still a shame that there’s no backwards compatibility, but at least the PS2 slim’s still kickin’

  • Yes the HDD is replaceable… Ign added that to the video you can see here:

    http://ps3.ign.com/articles/101/1015196p1.html

  • HDD is removeable and replaceable just like the old ones all except its in the front.

  • This sucks i taught it was a rumor and i just bought my ps3 2 months ago…and the one i got only has the 40gb….should i sell it back for the new one??

  • i’m really getting a ps3, and/or a ps2 slim, no disrespect on xbox or nintendo fans

  • I think going back to the PS2 font is a step backwards. I like the Slim except for the font. Its hideous!!

  • $100!!!!! price cut? wow, i was expecting $50, you over did yourself sony! thank you!. now i regret getting my 80gig for $399 back in june.. DAMIT!!!!!!!. i might deactivate it, sell it and pick up this slim one, i really like the design however i wish Sony would have left some “glossiness” to it… and added a drop of silver or chrome.

  • Will this have the smae performance as the ps3 and will it be as delicate as the ps2 slim

  • I don’t like the new look : the logo and the buttons!I like the Fat PS3

  • I hate slim lines, they look so nice and slim oviously. But i already bourght the other one and very happy with it, but now i want that. I’m not going to get it anyway, mine 80gb which does me fine. My friends on xbox are screwed the PS3 kicks ass with that amazing price for more memory and stuff. WOOOOO!! but i’m not getting the slim one its just the same as the other but slimmmerr. :)

  • FINAlLY! THANKS SONY! PRICE DROP FTW! PS3 IS MINE!!!!!!!!!!

My only complaint is the matte finish and the PS3 font.

  • Sadly there are a few key features missing now:

    BC= gone

Other OS install in XMB= gone that means no Linix support for those Yellow dog fanboys

rear main power switch= gone Means if your PS3 craps out it will basically require you to switch the main power button on and off into standby and back on again.

Fancy button for power= gone Now we will have to use an analog button you actually have to push a button now.

    No reset button

Rear HDMI port seems to have been covered

We now have to use a separate eject button: I like that better then the current system

    still has 2 USB ports

yes it’s smaller and lighter, but it’s still the same specs under the hood. Still quite loud over the Xbox360…. Still I like the look of the top much better IE no finger prints all over it!

I do like the new size, and less noise, but still my Xbox360 is almost wisper quite after I install my games to my HDD. But it’s nice to get more HDD space for your money. 120GB is far better then 80/160 (for twice the price)

Still if only they would bundle some good games with this monster and it might sell even more! Killzone 2/Resistance 2 PS3 bundles Sony and now!

  • Well, here’s my dilemma…I’ve got an old 80g that had the YLOD issue. Lots of game saves (120+hrs in Oblivion alone!) and irreplaceable family pics… if the HDDs can be swapped, I’m downgrading to the tune of 40g of space… if they’re not, then I’ve got no way to transfer the info, because the old PS3 won’t even turn on… OR spend $149 to get the old one fixed, but would I be assured of getting my old HDD back? sigh

  • Another step back for Sony,I am a die hard PlayStation fan. The slimmer design is nice but it doesn’t look as good and they actually removed features. I have been into using yellow dog Linux and now I cant install any Operating systems, terrible. At least I can still swap out the hard drive. Sony should not have introduced features then have taken them away. I am still not going to X-Box but come on. You can watch a video on the slim ps3 at gamespot and deduce your own conclusions.

  • Is September 1st the official release date because Gamestop has it being shipped on August 24th and in stores the 25th. Can you please clarify if this is true.

  • O yeah sweet time to check my piggy bank for a little extra cash :P

  • wow dose it have a bether warranty because my original playstation3 is really bad 60GB but they replaced it 3 times broke this morning again. hope the slime version doesn’t have a yellow light of death under 1 years hope you ps3 all confirmed if your ps3 have already replaced your original ps3 hope you don’t have to but believe me hater warranty ps3 will crash.

  • but should i get one even doe i have the regular one 80GB

  • i wanna get the ps3 slim is so small and 120 gb ftw

  • nice as always sony

  • no it is not backwards comatible

  • i wish it was shiny like the other one

  • wow this looks amazing

  • jumm…so rare that this is better than the first PS3 and it’s cheaper. i want to buy a PS3 but now i don’t know which one….

  • finally ive waited for a price drop like this

  • there’s no point to make the ps3 slim. sony always has to make all there gaming systems slim and i mean all there systems also yes the HDD can be upgraded.

  • is the new playstation 3 slim gonna have all the same aspects as the first fat version like the memory stick Duo slot for the psp memory stick, and is it still going to be under a slideable casing like the first version???

  • i think ps3 slim sucks balls

  • Rite on Dnangel14 yea SONY for life knock the xbox 360 off the shelfs

  • @ 89:

Where’s the Bravia Sync for HDMI on our older models Sony? Huh?! I hate to leave a second comment, but I’m SURE this could be implemented with a mere firmware update to our fat PS3s.

  • im trading in my old one for the newer and slimer one with more space

  • If the new PS3 will allow me to play PS1 games, without internet links, on my psp, then I’ll get one just as soon as I can scrape up the money. If not… why should I bother?

  • Pluses:
    price drop (yes!!)
120 GB HDD (from 80 GB)
    smaller size

    Minuses:
cheap look (minor issue IMO, though)
still no PS2 backwards compatibility (not expect, but :( anyway)
    drop of linux (Noooo!!!!)

I _was_ hoping that a second tier model also will out with PS2 BC & bigger HDD for $399. But with Linux being dropped too and comments to the effect no more “other OS” support ever :( … I’m now thinking of getting my second PS3 with the old big design, or (more likely) not getting a second one and praying my current one keeps running.

PS2 BC and linux are not main stream selling points, but they are big enough for a small percentage (& major reasons I got mine when it was announced BC was being dropped). I gladly paid $100 for BC, even though I knew I’d only play one game.

  • awesome… but i will be getting the psp go

  • Weak. That’s all I can say about the new ‘slim’ version. Totally and completely weak…

I’m glad that my original 60GB with FOUR usb slots, BACKWARDS COMPAT., and the CARD READERS…

If my ps3 ever dies, I won’t be buying one of these pieces of junk… I’d rather not play on anything without proper support.

Sony, you need to get off your butts and get things in order. I don’t care about Backwards compat… I played my ps2 to death… you can keep that, but 2 USB slots and no card readers are out of the question.

My current ps3 is the center of my home theater. If I go out and take pictures, I can bring them home and pop them into the ps3 without a dongle using up what would be one of 2 USB slots.

The 60GB version was your nicest PS3 to date. Take note of that and re-add that hinge door with card slots so our ps3’s actually look cool instead of some nerd’s machine with dongles and all hanging out.
