It’s confirmed! The PlayStation 3 is now available for $299. Yes, NOW! Today, Kaz Hirai also announced a new, slimmer form factor 120 GB PS3 (available September 1st). SCEA President and CEO Jack Tretton shows off the new hardware in this video.

I’m still playing PS2 games. I got a PS2 because of GT3. I’m waiting for: 1. backwards compatibility w/ PS2 games and 2. GT5. I might just pull the trigger, anyway… though I still need to finish playing GT4.
Can anyone tell me if this new slim PS3 will have backward game compatibility with PS2 games?

The fact that the 60GB launch model has PS/PS2 BC makes it a bit worthwhile.

When I heard the roumor about a PS3 Slim I didn’t think it would be possible, but they did it. And not only is it smaller; less power consumption and half the launch price. (y)

Congrats to Sony… I foresee a lot of PS3 sales this year… But hey try to be more careful with 1st party franchises such as Singstar… If you get UMG songs in the US Singstore + PS3 Slim, then you will have an incredible boost ;)
good, more space! with the playstation store pumping out hi-def tv content and movies, i’m going to need it! i have 2GB left on my current ps3, and that’s without any photos or videos – just games. sigh.

I heard they just dropped the price of the PS3 to $299 and I just got this new system less than 30 days ago for $399. My question is will I be eligible to get a refund for the difference? Anybody in the same situation as I am?

Looks nice, and I would opt to upgrade, but wouldn’t it be redundant since we can’t copy our current game saves to the new hardware? The copy prohibition seems like a major deal breaker for most.

You can backup your old PS3 to an external hard drive, then restore that backup to the new PS3. Voila!

@323 I thought that only worked if restoring to the same exact hardware for copy protected saves. Many have been burnt by replacement units after theirs have failed, correct?

sweet,for $299 you get a blu-ray player & a gaming machine. with the great games that are coming out this fall, there isn’t any excuse not to get a PS3. the only thing that sucks is that there isn’t backwards compatibility.

My ps3 is still the best one on the market launch 60gb with backwards compatibility 4 usb ports and card readers….. wont be picking up a slim any time soon… but my whole family will be getting ps3’s for Christmas this year. Great job Sony on the price drop you just closed the gap on the wii and xbox360. You need to work on keeping your announcements a secret though.. This is the same console that was leaked out in may. :/

i have to say the PS3/PSN not the best multimedia system. from 1-10 i would give it a 8.5 its missing a few elements. like a music store the abelty to download music to our mp3/4 players buddy up with Apple and bring a iTune App.

This new slim PS3 for $300 seems like a great deal. However, I like my chunky PS3. If only the repair service also had a price drop :(

so if have the original ps3 60gb and i wanted to get the new slim ps3, Can I transfer my saves over to the new console? my guess is by backing up then restoring?
Playstation 3 is awesome, I use to be an XBOX 3 Fix Me fan, but buying a PS3 has been an amazing investment, thank you!! I cant thank you enough, I am truly grateful, and now will be a Playstation fan forever!

0.o I already have a 40gb Ps3, so now all we need is a Ps2 compatible Ps3.
$300 or not. No PS2 backwards compatibility still equals no sale to me.
I’m still happy with my 1st gen behemoth. But if it breaks, I’m selling all of my PS3 stuff because I will not be buying a replacement.
Continued lack of backwards compatibility is a deal breaker.
Before I get any asinine comments about buying a PS2, I have one. Two of them in fact. A 1st gen that still works and a slim. But that’s not the point. I don’t want to have to have it continued to be hooked up if I wish to play PS2 games. I want everything in a all-in-one box. What’s next? Taking out DVD playback since that’s a PS2 function as well?
