Digital Comics Store for PSP Coming in December

Hi Everyone –

You may have heard the recent announcement out of gamescom that digital comics for the PSP are coming to PlayStation Network (for the U.S.). This December, you will be able to purchase and download from over 1000 digital comics on PlayStation Store (on the PSP and Media Go). We’ve partnered with one of the leading comic publishers, Marvel Entertainment, to bring you the biggest names in comics, including Spider-Man, X-Men and the Fantastic Four. Now you are able to view graphic novels for bite-sized entertainment on demand and on the go.

We’ll be adding an additional comics tab to the PlayStation Store for PSP, so you’ll see different storefronts for your PSP games, downloadable movies & TV shows, and for comics. Once you download a comic, you’ll read it through the digital reader for PSP which has an Autoflow feature that lets you zoom in and out and move from frame to frame on each page. It’s really a fantastic way to read and view the comics, because it keeps the integrity of the original print comic.

I’ll be back in December to give you a demo of the new “comic store” and the reader for digital comics and graphic novels.

  • How do independent creators contact Sony/PlayStation to see about getting their titles on the service?

  • Will it becoming to the PS3?

  • Grace, you are a disgrace to Sony. As manager of PSN, you should be pushing for making PSN a better service…ie: getting the gears in motion to bring this stuff to Canada.

Sony has no legitimate reason to NOT bring these services to Canada, and you and everyone you work for are ****ing awful at your jobs and even worse as human beings.

Please resign and let Microsoft take over the Playstation business. It would seem they’re the only ones who know how to run a NORTH AMERICAN business…I bet you didn’t know Canada was part of North America. Yep it is…the biggest part too!

  • Congratulations Sony! You guys totally are a leader in Entertainment. Can’t even do a simultaneous launch of one service worldwide.

Canada..pfft who cares.. It’s all US to Sony. Why can’t you introduce a service which includes every single territory in your service?

  • For some of you who have been asking for DC Comics I’m pretty you’ll see them sign on. If you notice in the video store there are already digital comics (motion) for DC like Watchmen, Batman and etc. Sony wouldn’t do this if they didn’t have major support from other publishers.

  • I was hoping this was going to be for the PS3 also. Viewing comics on my HDTV would’ve been cool. Oh well, hope Sony works on that. Doubt it will happen.

  • Wow, that’s pretty nice. I guess I’ll be buying a comic when this feature comes out.

  • Hey,

I was also hoping that the comics service would also be available on the PS3 as well. If not it just seems like a missed opportunity by both Marvel and more so by Sony.

  • cant you just have a digital book section instead with the comics in it???????????????????

  • Grace,

As you are unable to produce this or the video service to Canadians can you please adjust this website based on my ip address to show crap flinging monkeys instead of stories about services you cannot offer me?

This blog is for all of SCEA so adjusting it on the fly to suit your Canadian audience would be swell.

    Cheers.

  • Canada not worthy of digital paper.

  • So we won’t see the comics store and reader until at least December? Too bad. Still, glad to hear this is coming.

  • I always had one question…why doesn’t Sony launch a music store and add a subscription fee of about $4-$5/month. Doesn’t Sony own a separate company mainly for supplying its customers with music? Sony BMG!

  • Will there be a music section for the playstation store?

  • I wish we had a music store also come on Sony you control whatever Sony BMG did control

Does Sony USA have to license music from Sony Music Japan or do the license(s) carry over to America(s) as well?

  • GREAT NEWS!!
    1. Will we be able to order back issues? And,
    2. Will we be able to copy comics to a PS3?
Reading Marvel comics on a 42″ plasma before you go to sleep – PRICELESS!!

  • Can you get a yearly subscription like regular comics

  • I just pray this feature is affordable…

  • Fun Fact:

The population of Canada is smaller than the State of California.

Not to say that Canada shouldn’t get this service, but maybe the cost benefit of digital distribution may be outweighed by the initial ROI.

Also, the PS3 has BC. It’s called PSN. Once Sony has phased out the PS2 we’ll be able to repurchase and download the PS2 library all over again like the PS1 library.

  • Awesome hope i can download the stand comic book!!!

  • Bring over DC Comics, and then I’ll be interested. ;)

  • @119

    Funner Fact:

The population of Canada hasn’t stopped Microsoft or Apple from launching video services for the Xbox and iPod respectively in Canada.

    FACT ARE FUUUUUUUUUUUUUN.

  • @122

    Even MORE fun fact:

    That’s Microsoft and Apple.

    Even more DELIRIOUSLY fun fact:

Both Microsoft and Apple are US based companies. Sony is still Japanese, even though they have US based subsidiaries, and are subject to different trade laws than US based companies are. Also, Sony of America has to answer to Sony of Japan.

    Stupidly fun fact:

    Funner is not a word.

  • Question, will they be DC like the Dead Space Comic? Like semi moving pics and voice work or sound effects. Cause if its just a page by page comic while reading small text then its a waste.

  • As other individuals have already said, I am disappointed (yet again) by Sony’s lack of support/interest for Canada.

And as one poster said, Sony should clarify what “not at launch” means; specifically, they need to answer with an emphatic yes or no to the following question – are you planning to release this service in Canada?

Watching gamescom – this was the one thing that made me excited for the PSP again. Sadly, it only lasted a few days before being crushed by Sony’s actions.
