Just in time for the official launch of the 120 GB PlayStation 3, PS3 Firmware (v3.00) will be available shortly. As detailed during gamescom 09, 3.00 will introduce a number of great features, including “What’s New,” a redesigned status indicator and Friends List, and support for new avatars and dynamic themes.

Just so you know, your friend’s list will be showing your Trophy Card information as soon as possible. So don’t worry, the grey box will make sense to everyone of you.

Yeah I agree with the above about the new friend list design, its terrible.
Now if it was modified so when you press X on it, instead of going to the new page, the trophy info etc. drops down from the gray friend box that would be/look good but the gray boxes still don’t really fit.
I am also with you on the font size and ticker.
WHY when a UI change is made Sony cannot keep the original previous options available to the people who like the previous look, feel and functionality?

Do people that complain around here wonder for one second how it is to live in poverty and not being able to buy a PS3 “at all”? How it is to live with cancer or any other life threatning disease? How it is as a child to live as a soldier and to be forced to kill? How it is to live as a woman forced under the hands of communism or religion and not being able to do things or speak freely? If people around here realize for one second that they should be ashamed for once about their silly complaints concerning stupid updates which has no life threatning meaning at all, it would be a lot calmer around here.
I don’t understand why the chose gray boxes. They couldn’t have made them clear, with like a light black outline around it? Now the friends clashes with any theme you use.

MKV is a container and can contain a wide array of video and audio formats. PS3 will most likely NEVER support it.
However it does support H.264 Video and AAC or AC3 audio very nicely which are most commonly found in an MKV so read on …
Alternative:
Google tsMuxer and mux your MKV to and M2TS, if it truly is H.264 video Level 4.1 or below and AAC or AC3 audio the PS3 will play it.
I do it all the time I have full 1080p video with 5.1 audio on my HDD.

The video streaming over the whats new is…well…crap. I get about one second of play before it needs to buffer again.
I did the update early this morning. I gotta say that it’s lookin’ pretty good. I can’t wait to see more dynamic (animated) themes for PS3!!! Nice job, Sony!!

We need a font size option
there is an option to turn of the whats new but it doesnt work. friends list needs to go back to the way it was sony.. this is a major update my ass. its a big copy of xbox ads everywhere… i been a fan since ps1 had every system 2 psp’s and have loved almost everything u have done till now… cant beleive this i really cant i am embarresed to let my friends with xbox’s play my ps3i have been fighting for you guys for years. oh and i have an xbox and there ads suck too.but iloved u sony cus u didnt resort too their tactics u have made me a sad panda… i hope u have a 3.1 coming soon

I like everything but the way the friends’ list looks. Also, what happened to me being able to listen to music while navigating my XMB or watching a picture sideshow? Did that needed to go?

I have to say, I have never been so reluctant to download a Firmware update before.
Most of what I am reading suggests that the changes are less than great; changing the intro, removing the splash screen on game startup. those two may seem trivial, but those two things are features that have become part of the PS3 experience, and changing/removing them doesnt make a lot of sense.
The fact that you added neat features like animated Themes is interesting, but the fact that those offerings come at a cost turns me off.
I know that you cant please everyone all the time, but it seems like you have made a good number of people very unhappy with this Firmware Update.
Seeing over 1000 posts and no replies, I dont know if this will get answered, but I was wondering how big is your User-base when testing new Firmware features?

the main problem is that the PS3 cant read any subtitle files such as ASS or srt, add this and everyone is happy

Lol at everyone ranting about the “horrible” changes in this update. You are all so petty. Thanks for the update sony. After a couple weeks people will realize that most of these changes were for the better and the few they don’t like have absolutely no impact on their experience using the console, but you already know that. I just dread the news articles on blogs etc. that’ll give voice to these feeble complaints.

It’s more beautiful and the layout decisions is also cool.
But still no custom soundtracks. Come on. On the next update please. You want replay value, add this feature and that’ll created the boost.
Firmwares should be uploaded to the website at the same time they are available from the PS3. I prefer downloading them from my PC.

You can still listen to music and browse the XMB.
Go to your Music setting and change it to 48 kHZ…
I had the same problem and mine was at the other setting (the higher one which no longer works with the browse option).
It will work again after you reset it to 48 kHZ
I want my Spider-man font PLAYSTATION 3 game boot up logo back. Give me an option to change the size of the xmb text, it’s too big now.

The only complain I have is the font size, which made me feel like playing on SDTV again, and the friends list, but I think I could cope with the friends list if the font size would return to what it was.
What we actually want:
– Revert to original XMB and startup
– Better trophy organization options (i.e. arrange what games show up on top etc.)
– Better profiles with more user information and one that doesn’t take FOREVER to load
– CROSS GAME CHAT
The list goes on and on, DO A POLL the next time you want to change the system, the consumer is always right!
Pay attention Sony!
You can still navigate the home menu and look at pictures and still listen to music at the same time. I’m doing it right now. All you have to do is select a song or playlist, let it play, and hit the ‘PS’ button to return to the main menu.
My 2 cents on 3.0
3.0 update is nothing less than pretty blanket over our former interface. A marketing tool to ensure first time PS3 users know “What they could buy now” and how to navigate the XMB. The XMB is huge… which at this time is two clicks short of braille.
While I understand why this update and why now… I can’t understand why nothing really over the edge for your current customer base. Something simple as Bravia Sync for previous owners would have atleast gotten you some Kudos for trying.
We have a 10 year cycle…so I guess we’ll get there some day.
The top right panel is the only thing they’ve got right. I just don’t like how it disappears when someone comes online. It would have been better if new information appeared underneath. The same way Growl for Mac displays multiple notifications.
Those grey boxes around your friends list is a total design mystery. Serve no purpose, you don’t even get extra character for your speech bubbles.
If anything I would have thought they would adopt more UI styling from Home and incorporate it that way. With it taking up so much room you would assume each friend’s trophy total and level would be on view.
aaa c’mon guys it’s not that bad!!, download the AFRIKA THEME from the Japan ps store, it’s cool, sony you got my support, i love the new intro (i recognize that the old orchesta was way a lot better), the only thing i don’t like it’s the ps store in every section of the XMB…but i know you’ll be fixing this in the upcoming firmwares

so, I wanted to voice my dissapproval of some of the features that were implemented
1. please allow us to remove the ticker on the top of the screen
2. please send the PS store back to its section in the tabs, it has no place in the game and video tabs
3. large HD screens make the new large font look bad
4. the ps3 is now recognzing my s3000 tv as 480p?

I was able to download the update at 10:30 last night and it is awsome everthing has been changed from the opening menu to animated sparkles in the background and the friends list really pops just saying!
Im sure that cross game chat and cross game invite is coming. I really dont care for it, but with everyone yelling for it, im sure that it is coming. I have alot of faith in sony! The game line up is amazing!!

this update is awful. the old xmb was better. and what’s up with not being able to turn off the scrolling garbage at the upper right of the xmb. and please go back to where u could watch video files on the ps3, and hit the ps button and access the xmb WHILE the video files still played in the background. sony why do you make each update worse and worse?
I’m not bothered by any of the changes, but I do miss the way the color used to change with the seasons and time of day. Why did they remove that? Oh well, other than that it’s cool.
also i don’t even noticed the “new giant font” (i have a 32″ bravia with HDMI) but when i was in a SDTV the small fonts or games with black frames and the poor consideration with SDTVS pisses me off, it’s cool for the ones with SDTVS

People… for one, please stop the all caps. Yelling is not the way.
If you are unhappy with the font sizes or such, put in a support ticket for them to put on the list to patch. People who are complaining about the XMB and ticker and such, really??? How long do you actually spend on the main screen??? Just long enough to change to a different game or movie or such. Not like you have to stare at the thing for hours on end or anything.
Major updates, for those who are new to this type of thing, this is how it goes – is put something new in and get feedback, then add things to the patch list to change or correct things.
So download the firmware, take a look around, don’t like something put in a support ticket with Sony about it. If it is something that was never added to the system ask politely for it (Don’t do the I WANT THIS NOW), they may depending on how many want it and put in tickets to get some Dev to work on getting it in a future update. If it is something major, put in a ticket and see if Sony can help you out with it don’t just post and yell about it. Don’t get things done if you yell in a comment and not put in a ticket.

The gray background on the friends list looks awfully cheap and horrible. Why did you change the look of the friends list in the first place. Here in the UK we have a good old saying ‘If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it! That saying applies here I’m afraid.
Instead of fixing and trying to improve the friends list, please can you focus on gaming related features instead, features that really do need to be looked at such as cross game chat and universal in-game custom soundtracks. These, along with backwards compatability, is what the PS3 really needs, *NOT* some horrible looking friends list.
Good job Sony. You took something that worked perfectly fine, and broke it. 3 PS Store icons? Seriously? Those grey boxes around the friends are pretty atrocious. You think they would at least have a purpose like a mini trophy card. The font is way to big. I felt really great when I got my HDTV a month ago but now it just seems like I’m on an SDTV. Not enjoyable. How about instead of saying “we look forward to your feedback,” you actually READ our feedback and make some changes we actually want.
I think the only good thing about this update is the battery icon is finally out the way. So thanks for that I guess. It only took forever.
