  • I have an original 60GB bc model. I had installed update 3.0. I have had multiple lock-ups with the newly released “Labyrinth” Blu-ray disc. It locks up towards the end of the movie crashing the system. It would lock up in the chapter with the steam powered robot battle, after rebooting I would get and error saying the disc was not supported.

After installing 3.01 I retried playback of the same chapter, it worked but proceeded to lock up in the next chapter. It locks up in the same chapter every time now.

We tested “the Dark Crystal” which had played through the main movie yesterday. The movie played but we did not watch the whole thing. It then locked up when entering “picture in picture mode”. These are both brand new Sony Pictures disks with no scratches. We played resident Evil 5 for a few hours earlier today with no trouble.

It seems possible that these issues are more widespread but may be isolated to certain discs/modes on some ps3s. The ability to roll back to 2.80 would be appreciated but is probably not realistic. I would like to know if there is a fix in the works. I will not be paying for a repair until I know what is really going on.

Nintendo has told our sister site Eurogamer that UK Wii consoles broken by firmware update 4.2 will also be repaired free of charge, as in the US.

“We are aware of a very small number of reported problems with Wii consoles after updating to the Wii System Menu 4.2,” said the platform holder in a statement.
“If we find that you have a normal system and the update has caused your system to not work, we will repair it at no charge,” added the statement.

Now, compare how Nintendo treats their customers to Sony and “you’re the first one calling us about this. Nobody else is complaining but you. It’s your fault so pay 180€”
Not even an official statement. Just no respect whatsoever.

  • the ps3circleofdeath.com is now operational

  • NUMBER 853!

Bluray playback lasts about 5-10mins then freezes.

WHY DOESN’T SONY BRING OUT 3.0.2 as a near on identical copy to a working 2x, just to get things working again for ALL of us!

    This is daft.

  • Had a phone conversation with PS in Switzerland just now. My PS3 died after the 3.01 update. 3.01 directly from 2.80, I was abroad for 2 months. Knew from the beginning that there was nothing in for me (bought my PS3 80 gig in the US) but I wanted to hear it from them. I still had hopes, after all Sony is somehow multinational… Basically, she said that they couldn’t do anything, not even receive the PS for repair! They insist that it is not the FW but cannot deny that it is strange that it happens to various users worldwide simultaniously after the FW update. Apparently thers is a internal letter stating that it has nothing to do with the FW. She basically told me that I could throw my PS3 away. Hearing this from a multinational company somehow disturbes me, taking into consideration that the console cost me around USD 500.- and died on me after an enforced FW update only 22 months after I bought it is just unacceptable. I will also join the DB on ps3circleofdeath and will write a letter to a Swiss consumer-protection magazine. Although this does not help me a bit, eventually something will happen. Theres only one thing left to say, F**k!

  • My PS3 Slim seems to like to pause and play by it self after 3.01.

This go’s for both Blu-ray and DVD movies. Games are working just fine.

Have bin watching “Matrix” and “Kill Bill” (on blu-ray)on my PS3 Slim. It happens in like 1-2 sec and den it gos on. with matrix it did it like 4-5 time *pause* play *pause* play by it self.

Even when I press pause myself, it starts playing all by it self.

I seen this on 2 Slim’s (on my 2nd now that works but…) even the first slim I had did this. dunno if its the firmware. but it seems to make alot of problems, so I hope that is only a WORKING firmware update we are need for.

  • Hey, one more user to the growing list.

The sad part of my story is that I was not using my PS3 until I saw in some webpage that it was a new uptade for it.

So I got home, connected the PS3 to the internet and updated from from 2.80 to 3.0.1 I think… Didn’t play that day. So it turned it off and went to do something else.

A week later started to play Fifa08 with some fiends, we played for about 45 min to 1 hr, and surprise… the game just froze at the Fifa Arena (where you can practice shoots and stuff before each match)

So I proceed to turn it off with the front OFF/ON button and I wasn’t able to play any BD and Games, but DVD’s juts played fine. After that got some error code when inserted KillZone2 and went to my computer to research about it: HW issue BD player issue, etc.

The saddest part of my story is that I purchase my PS3 on US two years ago, I’m from Mexico… So, no warranty and no Tech support either.

Hope this will get fix as soon as possible, I don’t want pay for the repair, knowing that the prices here in mexico are the twice than in US.

    SONY please fix!!!!!

  • I’m really worried about this firmware. Maybe this has just DESTROYED the blue-ray by changing the voltage ?

I was read something about that.. If is true, Sony must repair without any cost

  • I upgraded my 80GB PS3 (CECHK01) from 2.80 to 3.01 a few days ago. The result? A blu-ray movie freezing and rendering the PS3 unable to read blu-ray discs. I know it’s not permanent because when I reload the 3.01 firmware from a usb drive, the blu-ray drive works again for a short time before freezing again.

Looks like those of us with PS3 bricks that are out of warranty are SOL until Sony releases a new firmware that works. Sony should release these firmware updates to owners of PS3s that are still under warranty first. There’s nothing worse than pissing off old customers and destroying brand loyalty.

  • Thumbs up to the class action lawsuit.
Another reason why no one (Sony) is replying on this, is probably because they know its their fault and they cant say anything.

  • Well my 60GB console has worked fine without any problems and lots of the blogs have said no its not the firmware its faulty hardware, well I have updated my firmware and I am experiencing all the problems of black screens and no blue ray drive only DVD, and menus not working correctly, I just find it hard to belive as a computer engineer that the firmware is not to blame #1 they had to relase a quick fix to the first faulty firmware, so why should I belive that 3.01 is not at fault…. why do I come to this conclusion simple, you cannot prøve them wrong, as there is no firmware rollback feature.

    Sorry I dont buy it…

  • This update increases the voltage on the BluRay laser, not a problem on the new PS3 slims due to their new architecture but is fatal for the older versions… no more BluRay movies/games for anyone who upgraded to 3.0/3.0.1 with an old PS3.

Luckily mine is still under warranty – but I really feel sorry for all those who are not… to release a FW update without fully testing on old and new hardware is unforgivable and Sony should fix them for free and remove 3.0 and 3.0.1 immediately!!!

  • @ 862, is that really true? I want to bury my blu ray drive. You think it would be possible to update the firmware so that the blu ray will work again? My blu ray drive works rarely now(if i dont turn it on after a while) Most of the time it doesnt read anything. Well? Hope or suicide? FIICK you sony.

  • FWIW Sony, I think you can add me to the whiny firmware masses. I updated to 3.0 and immediately had a disc based game start freezing on me. Right after power-on, just sitting on XMB, seems to run very hot. Fans now won’t shut up with a disc in (used to cycle on and off). No prior problems w/this unit (CECHE101) on any firmware version.

I hadn’t been playing alot online lately so I missed 3.01. But in the interim I’ve stopped using it altogether until you sort this out if the “Sony changed the spindle speed for faster loads and now older models are pulling too much juice” thing is indeed true. If you could get on that, that’d be great umkay?

  • I CANNOT BELIEVE SONY STILL HAVE THIS UPDATE AVAILABLE!

  • to all bloggers that experienced this fatal firmware update… let us focus and change our direction…obviously sony is not listening an. theybare using this website for all this complaints as per advise from a lawyer can be used to prove that sony has a database for complaints…the best way i believe right now is to send email complains and notices to the three big networks here in the US about this problem. make sure that you mention that we already tried the sony customer support. lets see if sony will still shut their mouth…i have friends who havent updated their ps3 to 3.0 and are willing to show to the public via tv that the firmware bricks the ps3.

I agree with 866, something needs to be done, but prevention is better than cure, let’s first remove the Firmware to save some machines from this, then concentrate on those that are affected.

  • thanks for the update , but can guys please make us add more friends i keep deleting people to add people and now i have no 1 to delete so i can add more people

    THNKS :):)

  • I like Fraynel’s idea about writing to the networks, but I would add to that list some well read websites like Engadget, Gizmodo, and especially Consumerist. They seem to get results. Maybe it would help if we concentrated on one specific website.

  • Well, just got off the phone with Sony and, of course they’ve no idea how a firmware update could break a drive. To get the issue fixed it’ll set me back $149+. This is flat out unacceptable! The shear volume of PS3 owners reporting Blu-ray drive failures after the 3.00/3.01 FW is utterly shocking IMO.

Did I read something about a class action lawsuit?

  • sony is not responding to these complains…i suggested to the other bloggers instead of just sending our stories on these websites that we also send a copy to US and UK based tv networks. the cost of each ps3 is not a joke…if sony’s response is to fix it for 150 us dollars, i believe this is a scam. i barely use my ps3 and only after the 3.0 update it started to fail. we also have a Wii that is mostly played by my 6 yr old daughter and it still works. Again, please send copies of your remarks/complains to the media, this is one way to alert consumers not to buy ps3 ‘s at this time and for current ps3 owners not to update to 3.0

  • I PHONED SONY CUSTOMER CARE AFTER FW 3.01 UPDATE KILLED MY60GB PS3 BEING ABLE TO PLAY BLUE RAY OR EVEN SOME GAMES ON MY HARD DRIVE FOR EXAMPLE EA 3ON3 ARCADE,AGE OF BOOTY,BURN ZOMBIE BURN AND SONYS REPLY WAS ITS A HARDWARE FAULT THAT WOULD COST £128 OF MY CASH TO FIX EVEN WHEN IT WAS WORKING FINE UNTIL UPDATE 3.01 CO-INSIDENCE OR WHAT?

  • does this mean that ps3 has cheap parts…did not even last 2 years…it is a shame on your part sony to admit that it is a hardware issue…

  • ok guys, i have the file for 2.8 downloaded and unpacked so that i can figure out how to get the system to recognize it as the newest firmware but i am out of ideas. anyone out here have any suggestions?

  • I have an 80gb (US) first generation PS3. I unfortunately am also now in the “My Playstation doesn’t want to play” club. I am somewhat glad that my problem is not isolated. I can watch DVD (actually only tried one, a DVDR of Nine Inch Nails in Australia) but I cannot play ANY PS# games or watch ANY BLURAYS on my PS3… I too did the firmware update and ever since I have been unable to use my PS3 for what I paid $500+ for. The fact that SONY is wanting to charge $150 to fix a problem that they created is pretty poor business ethics… I have never had any trouble AT ALL out of my PS3 prior to this update. I am highly disappointed and just want to watch my bluray’s and play my PS3 games again!!!! PLEASE FIX THIS ISSUE SONY IT’S YOUR FAULT AND IF YOU VALUE YOUR CUSTOMERS AT ALL YOU NEED TO BITE THE BULLET AND DO WHATEVER IT TAKES TO RECTIFY/REMEDY THIS PROBLEM NO MATTER WHAT (EVEN IF YOU HAVE TO REPLACE EVERY LAST PERSONS PS3 WHO HAVE BEEN AFFECTED BY THIS; I’LL SEND YOU MINE!!!!)…

  • Please SONY PLEASE.. Fix this bug, I got it with my BD/DVD player on my PS3 60G PAL. After upgrade it to version 3.00 from version 2.80, My BD/DVD won’t play on 1080p resolution anymore, Whereas on v2.80 I can play in full HD but not now. It keep blacking out when I played it on 1080p and I have to do a reset every time to get it back to work with 1080i instead. Seriously something is fishy about this. This firmware is downgrading my $1200 launch model to some cheapy PS3 slim. Can you fix this please. Or else please atleast rename firmware version 2.80 to 3.02 so we can download it once more and erase our problem

  • I have an 80 gb chche01 Ps3, updated to 3.01 and joined the rest of you folks. Sony told me there was no way and update could do this, but for 169 they would fix it for me. Got it for Christmas in 07 and wife paid 600. Thank you Sony.
How can we confirm that they adjusted the voltages to the blue ray lasr?

  • Hi. recently I’ve bought a Stereo Sony bluetooth headset DR-BT21G for using the games at night and dont bother my wife, but for my surprise I find out that this kind of accessorie is only used for chatting. Why doesnt Sony PS3 can send out the game sounds for that device? For me it’s the only thing that i dont like in this console.

  • My 80 gb backwards compatible stopped reading discs 24 hours after the 3.1 update. It seems to affect the older backwards compatible models and may not be related to the physical drive reading but software communication, since it is unlikely that an update would make the bluray stop functioning. My ps3 has been flawless, I played it maybe once and week in the years i’ve had it, but after the update, everything else works fine just no disc reading, it’s not coincidence, but a pattern only seen in certain models it seems.

  • finally this is the latest news definitely i will sign up on this class action lawsuit…

    http://www.courthousenews.com/2009/10/05/Sony_Software_Update_Crashes_PS3_Class_Says.htm

  • purrfactor…there is a signature on the file that ps3 reads before it can be installed and recognized…if you know a genius programmer to hack that code…pretty much it will install..of course with a different filename like…8.2 ! i hope i was able to share some ideas to any programmer out there…may the force be with us…oh and dont forget to sign up with the class action lawsuit…k !

  • there’s only one solution here: class action lawsuit. until then sony won’t take us seriously. it’s clear that we’re all in the same boat.

  • hey yojimboco …there is one already…i posted the link…it says in my screen awaiting moderation does that mean i can only see it….

  • Found a guide to bypass the firmware check (thus theoretically allowing a rollback). No time to mess with it now, and no word on if it still works…it’s from circa v2.35. But maybe worth a shot if you want to hassle with setting up a Sony proxy server.

    http://www.ps3news.com/forums/ps3-guides-tutorials/bypassing-playstation-3-firmware-check-guide-99072.html

  • is that ps3circleofdeath.com ?

  • Someone ought to put this on the PS3 Wikipedia page:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_3

  • Hey guys, my 60GB PS3 has been overheating since the 3.00 or 3.01 updates. After a couple of minutes of being on at the XMB or almost instantly upon starting up a movie or game the fans kick into the highest gear and stay there, even if I quit out of the game or movie. The level of heat coming off the back fans is also noticeably higher than it was before.

I’m afraid to even turn it on now. Can you please fix this before I have to twitter it out?

  • no yojimboco…the moderator or the filter is blocking the link i posted…google “courthousenews”…anyway it will be out soon in the news and all of us will receive a mail about it….

  • this arrogant response from sony must end especially their insensitive customer service…i know some friends who saved their hardearned money to buy the ps3.

  • by the way it says in the news the class action lawsuit is represented by David Parisi with Parisi & Havens in Sherman Oaks, California. here in the east coast there is another group that met with a lawfirm famous for class action lawsuits….i would suggest guys for now that we stay away from this site since mr lempell is blocking any info like this. obviously sony is firm to say that the ps3’s current problem is not their fault. so let us find the solution. once we prove it. we win.

  • I think that Sony must step up and at least acknowledge that there might be an issue with the latest Firmware on certain older PS3’s and that that they are looking into it, without necessarily admitting fault.

That would put a lot of their customers who have been affected by this Blu Ray and Game disk freeze problem minds at rest. The fact that they are staying silent on this topic is merely adding to the frustration and speeding up the potential litigation mentioned in 887.

  • In the long run, all this negative perception and the subsequent legal challenges will not be good PR for a company trying to push their console in the lead up to the christmas market. Someone in charge at Sony needs to wake up before this snowballs and becomes consumer news in the mainstream media.

For the record, I have just sent my sons 60GB PS3 (purchased in Nov 2007) back to the retailer for repair, as a result of freezing post 3.01. Luckily I also have another 60GB PS3 which is part of my Home Cinema setup, which he is using to play games online in the meantime. My PS3 is at 3.00 and whilst choppy at times on certain games, is still working okay (at the moment). Needless to say, I’m not going to install V3.01 (or any other firmware update for that matter) as a consequence of this mess.

  • Luckliy for my son and I, the repair is being carried out free of chanrge by the retailer under the UK’s Sale Of Goods Act 1979. Only problem is now, I no longer have any confidence in Sonys Customer Care process or the PS3’s software/hardware. Also; my son is now asking for a 360Elite for Christmas. For the record; I’m a long standing and genuine Sony consumer electronics customer – and not some flaming 360 lover.

This expereince has had a negative impact on me and other customers looking at the comments on this blog, despite us reporting this issue in our droves to our respective Support teams. Yest somehow we’re merely being reduced to a at best a ‘whining minority’ and at worst “an acceptable failure rate %” figure.

Clearly, someone at the top needs to take note. And soon, or they will lose devoted customers – end of.

  • There is a lot of guessing here my PS3 has just done exactly the same thing as most peoples on here has done (the blu-ray freezes and disk drive not being recognised).

What someone needs to do to prove or disprove this is to get one PS3 3.01 with a faulty blu-ray drive and then take the drive out and put it in a machine with a pre version 3 firmware to see if it works. Obliviously they’ll both need to be using the same type of drive.

If it works fine you can claim the firmware is at fault and prove the theory.

On the flip side of this though is the fact that the firmware may have damaged the drive if as mentioned it caused it to work outside the tolerances it was made for so swapping it over may make no difference.

It would however, be a good idea to do this if someone has the equipment and skills (I don’t) to do it just to see what the outcome would be.

  • Everyone should send emails to sites like c|net, Engadget, Gizmondo, GameSpot and others that carry weight in this industry. They have contacts. They can make waves and dig into the problem. Once they start making a stink, others will jump on. If we can make enough noise, Sony won’t be able to ignore us.

  • 3.0 is all mess up my ps3 is freezing it jus start doin it it stay on for 3 to 10 mins then it freezs im so mad can anyone tell me anything about dat cuz im lost about wat goin on is crazy sony get ur game up

  • My PS3 froze and now calls my Full Metal Jacked BR ‘This is an ivalid disc. (80029906)’. You can hear the drive messing up. No games play…it’s really just a brick now.

Really…don’t charge us money for your screw-up, Sony. It’s simple…we’ll never buy anything of yours again. No new PSP, no new LCD TV, no new anything…

  • I tried to post this before, but they are moderating it. Let me try this:

    Crave @ c|net
    crave (at) cnet.com

    Engadget
    http://www.engadget.com/contact/comment/

    Gizmodo
    tips (at) gizmodo.com

  • Come on SONY! Just make it right and so it soon, you (as a corporation) know that you don’t want to lose any loyal or even first time customers due to a glitch on your part. It is very plain to see that by the volume of posts here this is more than just a coincidence! I personally have a Sony PS3 80gb (US) first gen obviously or I wouldn’t be posting about my bricked PS3, a 46″ Sony Bravia XBR LCD 1080p HDTV “with the sweet floating glass display frame”, a Sony 7.1 surround sound receiver, a 5 disc Sony DVD player…. I really love Sony electronics, and always have since I bought a 36″ Sony Vega flat tube TV. Even though it weighed about 250 lbs. the picture was beautiful. Ibought all of the listed Sony equipment except the last mentioned 36″ flat tube TV in the last three years. However, Sony if you leave me hanging on this issue and I am left with a $500+ DVD player that “used” to be a fully functional PS3… well then I will NEVER again buy ANYTHING that bears the SONY name on it EVER AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
