Hi Everyone,
Here’s this week’s list of new arrivals and top downloads for the Video Store. @ 7 …I think they are going to look at sales data before looking at a blog post rating. just sayin.
I have not bought anything from the video store yet, but it always seems they are adding tons of quality shows/movies. I always wonder why these video update posts get low ratings though.

KSPRAYDAD | September 25th, 2009 at 8:59 am
@11 Why low ratings:
1. SCEA who services North America has ignored 1000+ messages on this blog from Canadians looking for ANY news about this service coming to Canada. (I asked politely and weekly for 6 mos straight and now SONY has lost sales to me forever as I’ve moved on to iTunes and Live (I bought an Xbox specifically for video services) as they both service Canadians)
2. The DRM on the downloads is awful. I own 2 PS3 (4 if you include the two that I’ve had to fix … thanks YLOD and BD error, I luv you) yet can’t watch my content on either…it is locked down. If I have yet another PS3 failure…ALL MY BOUGHT VIDEO CONTENT is up in smoke. SONY’s TOS allow them to just ignore any pleas for help in that situation and thus I highly recommend that NO ONE BUY VIDEO CONTENT EVER unless SONY addresses the issue. Again, I’ve asked Grace here and in emails for any kind of comment on this for MONTHS and got now where. (Senior Manager seems to not mean that she has anything to do with Customer Service)
3. Price. To high in most cases.

You know what you can do instead of whining Canada? Go out and buy some blu-rays! The video store is overpriced, and sound isn’t even in 5.1!!!
This is why we mock you.
20
Happy_Spud | September 25th, 2009 at 9:34 am
Canada, go buy Blu-Rays. The video store isn’t that great.

Canada?
C’mon Sony. It’s been almost a year now. How can it be that difficult to get licensing deals in a different region with the same companies you already have deals with in other regions?

I’m sorry guys but the store is extremely expensive. Without a flat rate, You are nuts if you just expect me to expend $ 103.74 on RENTING the 26 episodes of the anime Xam’d. That is the only series that is exclusive of ps3, I can find everything else cheaper out there.

@26 & 27 Shut the [DELETED] up!!!
If it were you then you would have issue as well…USA is notorious for being the biggest [DELETED] on the globe…anytime anything doesn’t go your way, you are the first to have conflict.
The rest of us are just sick and tired of USA being priority when we too pay to play…and in many cases pay more, even though the dollar value is almost identical.
This is a blog damnit, and I for one will not stop using it for what it was intended (voicing PERSONAL opinion), just because some [DELETED] who already has the service has a problem with it!
So, having said that…
“CANADA???!!!”

Canada. Hell, even if you just told us you are working on it and maybe give a rough time frame it would be sufficient, but Sony is just keeping everyone in the dark. Not cool.

plaztiksyke | September 25th, 2009 at 5:02 pm
While the 256kbit AAC audio is decent enough for the price of the HD content, the 8mbit (average) AVC is not. I find the various artifacts coming from these low bitrates to be quite distracting on my 50″ plasma HDTV. (Yes, I am viewing from the proper distance.)
Of course, a lot of stuff isn’t available in HD and we get stuck with pretty bad looking SD videos.
My suggestion: increase the video bitrates of both the SD and HD content. Once people see and hear how good it sounds for the money, word of mouth will help things along quite a bit. Then again, if the DRM issues persist, then none of it matters.
34
triple_lei | September 25th, 2009 at 5:11 pm
On the topic of bitrates:
It couldn’t hurt to bump up the bitrates of SD episode content. SD movies are 2000 kbps (which I understand is also the max the PSP can support), and they look great, but episodes are only 768 kbps… of course, I wouldn’t want to buy the episodes again…

@29
Do NOT tie the people that live in the usa with our government, we dont control what they do you know. Not sure how things work in Canada but I can tell you its definitely not the same.
Its not our fault that we got the video store, but why are you Canadians so jealous we got the video store, we are enjoying it so its not right that your rating our video store a 1 because you dont have it, I think they should block all of you from rating it, or anybody else who doesnt have this service yet. Yes that is messed up I know but its getting kinda annoying seeing something like this get crap ratings from people who dont got it.
Europe has the video store go bother them, rate their store as crap, see if you dont get the same treatment.
@11
True enough, of course there wouldnt be sales data so they need some kind of data to see who likes it and who doesnt.
37
KSPRAYDAD | September 26th, 2009 at 6:36 am
@36…
Maybe Canadians are upset because they represent over 10% of SCEA’s market and have paid the same for their hardware as you did for yours?
If it isn’t a complete media hub vs US maybe Canadians should be paying $249 instead of $299 as compensation?
It also goes back to the ORIGINAL announcement at E3 2008 where SCEA didn’t differentiate that Canadians were getting stiffed…we all did the update that night anticipating a video store and got nothing.
It also goes to 1 full solid year of people asking questions on this blog and getting ZERO answers. A ‘we are working towards a launch in late 2009 or 2010 or we are not providing that service’ answer would suffice but it is just this big sucking silence. CUSTOMER SERVICE MEANS DEALING WITH UNCOMFORTABLE QUESTIONS…and in this regard Grace et al have failed miserably.

Hey guys, new PS3 owner, first comment…
I am from Scotland, therefore I will be introduced to PSN video store in November (I think?).
I’ve been trying to find out what the average price of an HD movie / tv episode in U.S dollars is. Can anyone tell me so I can make an equivalent estimate of how much it may cost us when the video store finally crosses the Atlantic…
Thanks!
Jamie.
…Also, it sucks to be in Canadian shoes in terms of not being able to buy from the video store but it sucks even more to be European! We get everything last! (Except Fifa 10 on Oct. 2nd, can’t wait!)
