NBA 2K10 New Demo and Features

Ronnie Singh's Avatar + Posted by Ronnie Singh on Oct 07, 2009 // Sr. Community Manager, 2K Games

Hey NBA 2K fans,

My name is Ronnie and I am the Community Manager here at 2K Sports. Many of you know me as Ronnie2K. I am the guy that gets to take part in the ridiculous stunts that we pull off here at 2K Sports. I attend all the athlete motion capture sessions (my buddy Andre Iguodala), put on events for fans across the country (Alex Ovechkin greeting fans from a Zamboni in the heart of Manhattan), interview the brightest stars that represent our company (shout out to James White, expecting a big year out of you sir!), and bring together and distribute the most exclusive 2K Sports swag. Being a huge basketball player in my time and getting to work for the best NBA simulation on this planet is truly out of this world. Do I really get paid for this stuff? But don’t get me wrong, I am the guy that’s just like any of you: a huge fan of our video games and our company and I want to give you guys a voice here at 2K Sports. Feel free at anytime to drop me a line, ask a question, or challenge me to a game. I am a pretty challenging NBA 2K10 match-up if I do say so myself.

I wanted to discuss why NBA 2K10 is going to be the most realistic, simulation basketball experience to date. Our team has added all-new gameplay components, out-of-this-world graphics, even more realistic Signature Style animations, all-new presentation elements, and an unrivalled online system. The demo for PlayStation 3 will be out October 8th 15th. It will feature a one quarter match-up between last year’s NBA Finals opponents: pitting the Orlando Magic at the Los Angeles Lakers.

NBA 2K10 Kobe

You will get four of the most intense game play minutes to become familiar with the game and get a taste of why NBA 2K10 will be unrivaled in the basketball arena. It still amazes me how all ten of the players on the court match their real life counterparts, both physically and in their tendencies. I probably shouldn’t be surprised after watching all the development team’s motion capture efforts from the past few months. It is no surprise that the game’s artificial intelligence is more intelligent than ever and will give you the freedom to have complete control of the actual outcome and actions of your player and match-up. This season you won’t just play the NBA, you’ll TAKE OVER.

I also want to take the opportunity to explain modes that you won’t see in the demo, but are among the finest features within the full game that hits stores everywhere October 6th. My favorite one is the new NBA Today integration. My biggest gripe over the years is that when it came to commentary, presentation, and overlays, a regular exhibition game was happening in a vacuum. There was nothing “real” about it. It was a fantasy matchup that had no real-world context and no impact. I had the pleasure of meeting both Kevin Harlan and Clark Kellogg and talked to them about this issue. It amazed me how deep their knowledge of the game was and how we didn’t capture that fully before. They could talk about what was happening in that particular game and they could talk about what happened last season. That was pretty much it.

NBA 2K10 Eastern Conf

Now that your game and the NBA are in sync, the door is thrown open for dynamic commentary that’s based on what’s really happening in the real NBA. During the action, the play-by-play commentary is interspersed with real-life facts that touch on how the players and teams are doing during the season and how they played in their last outing. We spent hours recording thousands of lines of audio with Kevin & Clark, so that in game they can discuss a team’s previous real life win or loss, and what the determining factors were in that game. The commentary and presentation will constantly be changing throughout the season to coincide with the real league and transition from pre-season to regular season, and finally, to the postseason based on what is happening in real life.

Obviously with no previous game context going into the demo game, there is no audio in the demo, but something that you should look for in the full version of NBA 2K10 that will bring your experience to a new level. Another great mode is My Player. You will get to build a budding NBA player and make a ton of decisions in his career that will influence him in his transformation to potential star. You will get to create and customize your player, both in terms of looks and play style, put him through intense drills to increase his skills and attributes, and play in games where he must fit within the team flow, while completing both Offensive and Defensive objectives and achieving career milestones. Doing so will put him on course to becoming the next icon in the NBA. In brief, My Player brings role-playing to basketball and allows you to create any type of player at any position. Should be great fun to see what you guys come up with!

NBA 2K10 Vitals

I am looking forward to how impressive I can make my 6’7” Athletic Small Forward that I built in the pre-release NBA 2K10: Draft Combine. I hope many of you got an early start on your career by grabbing the Draft Combine SKU. You will only get to take part in the NBA Draft if you work hard and go through the Combine. It’s available to download from the PlayStation Store if you want that early boost. I am partial to those two features because a career mode and realistic commentary/presentation have been my biggest gripes over my ten years playing NBA 2K basketball, but there are so many more cool features I didn’t even get into in NBA 2K10. Feel free to drop a question if you have one below. But grab the demo on October 8th 15th and make sure to get your copy of NBA 2K10!

4. how about starting your own franchise/association by BUILDING YOUR OWN ARENA? Get a team together, attract fans, make money out of them fans, sell teamgear, etc !! what i REALLY REALLY REALLY looking forward to?? –> having a story mode during your association !! keeping your players happy with minutes and roles is good, but i think as being some kind of manager of your team, you should have situations with the team. for instance, your starplayer doesn’t agree with a situation and comes into your office. he explains you the problem, and you as a manager have like three options to choose from, each with a different outcome? wouldn’t that be great? : ) in that way, you can keep your players satisfied, angry, or whatever.. Also situations as adding merchandise, creasing ticketprices, etc…

5. Thanks for the draft combine btw! ; )
i got a question about this… Once you finished your “My player” mode, is it possible to get your player on the team to start an association with?

ROnnie, this demo should’ve been out last week bro. Anyway, I have the game and it is great as usual. The only issue I have is that the defense needs to be improved.

Hey Ronnie,

Is there a reason why the FT shooting with the motion controller was taken off? My friends and I loved that part of the game and it taken away in 2k8. Please put the feature back.

Ronnie,

Before I forget, please patch the amount of Alley-oops the computer attemps. I am not lying, I have seen close to 10-12 Alley-oops in a single game. Also, please improve the defense. I love to score, but I love to play defense and it seems like the computer ALWAYS finds a way to find the right guy in the post before the shot clock expires. I get really frustrated playing D in this game. I just got off work so I hope you can at least read this comment.

Ronnie all i gotta say is dude you are one of the best repliers I’ve seen on this blog. You answer everything and i like that. You even reply to some of the Haters that bought Live lol! One thing though. The Game (rapper) cheated on his ranking last year lol! I got the game last year day one and people had a hard time getting games going online in 2k9 the first week or two but the Game had over 150 wins the day the game came out in the stores. Who was he playing to get so many wins when people couldn’t even get a match to start? I know stars get a copy before the public but come on there was no way anyone could catch him that first week. Oh yeah I got the trophy for beating a 2K staff member and i killed him by like 25 points. Make your staff step up their game lol!

a couple of things,

1) i just wanted an honest answers as to why the demo for the ps3 was released so late it would have been nice to try it out before i bought it

2) i know its not super important but how about adding extra arenas for preseason,as im watching the lakers game in the honda center it would be cool if in the future you had some of the arenas featured during the preseason

also just want to say this is my first NBA 2k and im pretty satisfied just wish i could have already continued my draft combine player after paying $5 without all these server issues, but other than that great game

    1) I have spoken about this several times before in comments. If we could have addressed it earlier, there is no reason we wouldn\’t have.

    2) There are a ton new facilities between summer circuit and the D-League.

The server will get ironed out and you\’ll enjoy My Player before too long.

Ronnie first I’ve gotta say that the last time I picked up an NBA game was ’07. My expectations for this game were low, but those were blown out of the water instantly.

The work that you guys at Take2 put into the motion caputuring transfered amazingly to the game play. Players do exactly what you tell them to, even if you didn’t mean to do it.

Also to answer your question on the 1st page, i know what it is like marketing-wise vaguely because I have family that was in it for a while, and they just got back in too.

Hi Ronnie,

My Player – PS3 – Import Issue…

So i bought the NBA2K10 DC… played it, made a character, finished the 6 games/drills then uploaded/saved before the actual 2k10 came out. now I bought the actual 2k10, and when I click on My Player > Continue, it says “There is no saved Data”… so…? I have to create a new guy with 2K10 again?…then i wasted my $5 & time spent on DC… OR maybe im not sure how the “continue” button works? OR would this be a problem due to the server being down and all?

I’m a big NBA 2K fan, since 2k6, and like you have it in your blog, 2K10 is by far is the best basketball game out there right now, and what really got to me was the My Player feature of 2K10 but it is not working right now T_T please help!

Thanks,

This year the group of guys who I usually game with online decided it was time for a change from Live. Prompted by our fond recollections of the Dreamcast days, we all decided to buy 2K10. Big mistake.

The core group of us who play online are very busy and have to fit playing time in when we can. When we shell out money on a game, we expect it to work right out of the box. But now, developers can just push out a product to hit their target release date and then tell the poor saps who bought the unfinished work, “don’t worry, there’s a patch for that.” Now, glitchy game-play with slow-down, bugs and the lack of an online presence is accepted because hey, it should be fixed eventually.

The worst part about it is that gamers just sit back and take it. My friends and I actually had some time last night when we could all go online, but online was out. People on the boards were actually suggesting that people who have a problem with essentially paying $60 for what amounts to a beta version of a game whose online doesn’t work should “STFU” because it will be fixed. Probably.

I want my money back for this cheat of a gaming experience. Congratulations, you’ve just lost a customer for life.

So why in the world is there still not a demo on PS3? didn’t the game itself get dropped tuesday already… I always download both the 2K and the Live demo to make my decision. And if you compare live 360 to live PS3 you can see why I can’t buy your game until I see the DEMO ON PS3. So what’s going on with this???

Ahh – I wrote over 1,2500 characters so my post got deleted. Anyways,

I was just wondering:

1) How difficult is the final game (will it be easier to pull off quick moves and dekes compared to the Draft Combine demo)?

2) Are there jagged edges like in the Draft Combine demo on the PS3 version? This has been annoying me a bit. How do graphics compare to NBA 07 by Sony Corp.

3) Any easier controller layout? There are so many moves, and it is difficult executing them (also, sometimes the controls are delayed, like when you press the pass button before you recieve the ball, once you recieve it it is immediately released even if you stopped).

Thanks, and this game is pretty good from what I’ve seen.

I just have one question:

In 2k9 there was an exploit where if you pressed the steal button when the ball handler was driving to the rim, you’d strip him an unbelievable percentage, and then the ball would end up hitting the offensive player and going out of bounds. The worst was that sometimes the defensive player wouldn’t even be near the player and the game would just do a weird animation to have the defender catch up and strip the ball handler. Has this been fixed?

As a very competitive NBA 2k player, you don’t know how much that infuriated me. Especially against people who used the Lakers, because somehow Kobe, Fisher, Odom, Ariza all had amazing stripping capabilities.

I have read your response to other questions and you say that you love the ps3…if this is the case why are the graphics of the game on PS3 not on par with the games graphics on Xbox?
