NEW 250GB PlayStation 3 System Available November 3

285 0

Hi everyone! Since we launched the slimmer, lighter 120GB PS3 system, we’ve sold one million units worldwide within the first three weeks. We know that all of you are really making use of the PS3’s hard drive, as more than 600 million pieces of content have been downloaded from PlayStation Network. But if you are the ultimate digital consumer craving a bigger hard drive, we have the perfect solution for you.

Today, we announced the availability of a new PS3 system with a 250GB hard drive hitting store shelves on November 3. The PS3 250GB system has the same slim look, feel and features as the 120GB system, but with a 250GB built-in hard drive for $349.99. With the new, larger capacity, you’ll have even more room to store your favorite games, movies/TV shows, music, photos and PlayStation Network downloads.

250GB PS3

We’ve been saying it for a while now—this year we’ll see the best software lineup to date. What better way to enjoy your PS3 than by playing some of this season’s exclusive PS3 titles such as UNCHARTED 2: Among Thieves, Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time, and PlayStation Network downloads like PixelJunk Shooter, Gravity Crash, and Hustle Kings. In addition to the huge software lineup available this holiday, there are 2,300 movies available to download from the PlayStation Network’s video delivery service, with a third of those movies available in full high-definition.

As always, we look forward to hearing your feedback and enjoy!

  • Very nice at $350 really. A $50 jump is pretty reasonable for an extra 120GB’s. I’m chilling with my 160GB B/C 20GB model :)

  • Cool, but imagine if PS3 had Cross Game Chat, Auto-syncing of trophies, and PS2 BC.

All 3 of those and if PS3 never lost FF-XIII and PS3 would be in 2nd place this gen no problem.

  • ps3 update cross game chat coming soon confirmed by nauthy dog developer

p.s. might start paying for psn

  • “there are 2,300 movies available to download from the PlayStation Network’s video delivery service, with a third of those movies available in full high-definition.”

When will this be available in Canada? I can’t believe we have universal healthcare but no PSN video service! :)

  • I already have a 250GB in my old fat ps3, easy to do by yourself!

  • So this is the seventh hardware iteration now, correct?

    *sigh*

  • it would been nice if u guys would make it look better.

  • Great deal!

  • $50 is about the cost of replacing the drive yourself. You may as well take it up to 500 GB for another $50, though.

The problem with doing that, though is that the file system isn’t very good. I have about 10,000 songs on mine (320 GB) and it takes forever to get from A to Z. It would be so helpful if we could make sub-folders within the Music category of the XMB.

    What do you think, Sony?

  • I saw this coming. Next release is going to be compatible with Ps2. Then next is gonna be the 250gb + some bundle. They keep going up till they re-reach the $499 console price tag. I know they really miss that price tag.

  • I’m with ajizer @28! I live across the border in Mexicali: if I had a realy long network cable I could hook up my PS3 to Internet in the US and get movies online from my mexican living room. I think the border patrol would notice the cable, though, being it blue and everything.

Didn’t you say at the past E3’s that you would focus more on Latin America? I’m still waiting.

  • This is nice, and definitely an added value for those considering the PS3 system.

    However. :P

Could you guys PLEASE consider releasing a model with additional USB ports? Especially one with USB ports on the back of the unit?

I’d ask for PlayStation 2 backwards compatibility again, but sadly you guys seem dead set against this. I’d love to upgrade to a newer model (from my original 60 GB with PS2 compatibility and 4 USB ports), but so long as there’s nothing comparable to replace it with, I’m stuck.

Help me Sony, you’re my only hope.

  • Ok I know this has already been said, but I’m going to say it again.

    “Best kept secret ever.”

I mean seriously with the oodles of information leaking before the announcement of the product, (ps3 slim, the 250 Gb model…etc), one begins to wonder if it isn’t an excellent marketing scheme or if there really are that many holes in the sony ship.

But I’m glad the ps3 is finally getting a decent amount of storage space because my launch ps3 with a 160GB Harddrive is a bit tight but it’s much better than the 60 it shipped with.

  • By the way, for those waiting for PS2 BC, Sony is obviously not releasing it until PS2 ceases production. If you want to play PS2 games just buy a PS2.

  • @ARtsIndustries

Or a launch era ps3 if you can find one that isn’t marked up exponentially.

In all seriousness various gaming news outlets have mentioned that sony has looked at being able to emulate ps2 games via the cell processor and rsx. Although unconfirmed given the trend of things that have transpired I wouldn’t be surprised if we see this happening.

Although it will be “sonied” (sony-ed) and you’ll have to re-buy all of your ps2 games via the PSN Store and they’ll be more expensive than buying a hard copy.

Plus if you already have an upscaling dvd player, that upscales input signals, you can already play your ps2 games upscaled therefore you have no reason to complain about BC because other than it not being consolidated into one smooth package, you will receive the exact same effect.

  • Changed my mind. I will get the 120gig and upgrade to 500gig for $60 canadian. So for $10 dollars more I will have double the size of this model plus a 120gig spare drive.

    :)

  • I must say Sony that is a Great Price for a 250GB PS3. I think you are finally on the right track with your pricing & when firmware 3.10 comes up with Cross Game Chat their won’t be much left for you too add. Except perhaps…

    – Cross Game Invites
    – Video Playlists
    – More Video Codecs
    – The Ability to Charge the Dualshock 3 controllers while in Standby
    – Fixing Remote Play over the internet so it works with my Router (2wire) wink wink
    – Adding Internet Radio
    – Adding a Timer to Music & Games

    – and finally for the PSP…

    – When pressing the Select Button it shows the movie or Music info(Display)instead of it showing the XMB like the Start & PS/Home button already do

    – ohh and while your at it add a video playlist option to the PSP also.

Thanks & Keep up the Good Work

  • that’s freaking awesome!

  • Good deal… For those that don’t know you can very easily upgrade your hard drive for cheap. Newegg.com has hard drives cheap. I have a 40 gb model ps3 and i upgraded to a Western Digital Scorpio Blue 320GB. Just remember you need a 2.5″ laptop hard drive, 5400 rpm. 7200rpm I’ve read will burn out your PS3, unknown on that. I’ve had mine for about a month now(upgraded). 2 1/2years on system itself. Word to the wise though, if you upgrade be prepared to do a lot of re downloading of programs, and also you will loose some game saves as some are copy protected and not transferable to memory stick or external hard drive to transfer to new drive (ex: Killzone 2) for instance. So me personally if I was looking for a Ps3 Slim i would go with the current one and upgrade the drive off the bat before I started to play any games or download anything off of playstation network save yourself a lot of headaches. May XBox die die a fiery death.

  • Not too awesome if you ask me.

    Buy Slim 120GB for $300 + 250GB HDD for $50 = $350 also. Now you have a spare 120GB HDD.

  • You guys nailed the ps3 skus, but psp go is still ridiculously priced.

  • Go Sony Go!!

  • Awesome if it had 4 usb ports and the memory card readers i would buy it, although i would miss playing some ps2 games like MC3 DUB Remix and San Andreas

  • You guys are selling yourself short, hehehe. Ratchet and Drake aren’t the only hot titles for the system this Holiday. Games like Demon Soul (while not for everyone) are exclusive well-rated games. This year saw a TON of games to welcome a new PS3 buyer. They have a lot of great games to catch up on from this year alone.

  • Does it have backwards compatibility and linux ? if it doesnt the 60gb version remains the best

  • I bought a 160 GB bundle for the price they were going at before in March, and yet for once I don’t feel burned by a $150 lower price on a superior console. You’ve got to factor in the amount of enjoyment you’ve already gotten.

  • I have 1024 gb of space. I bought an external 1TB hard drive, I think I am ok for now. lol

  • it’s a nice idea but i think it’s a little too soon and the fact that it’s a higher priced model makes it a step in the wrong direction the only difference is hardrive it’s the exact same model, people can easily purchase 1TB HD for under $100 so personally i think it’s a pretty poor move by sony, the slim was doing fine and would have continued to do fine. the only way this would have worked out better is if the rumor about 250GB with uncharted 2 bundle was true then this model would be worth it but currently the slim is a better deal and this version is just a way to milk money off consumers…

  • Looks Cool Can’t wait to buy it

  • Great Job Sony on the millions of units already sold. Many of my friends are converting from Xbox to PS3. I am very proud to own a PS3.
What about the memory problem on ps3? I have a 80GB and now have only 10GB. Instead of making bigger HDD’s, there should be more focus helping those who have trouble with memory space shortage.

  • Pretty swift

  • I can not wait for this one to come out. I have the original 80gb. from when it first came out. And I have been extremely happy with it, and need more space for what I have done with it.

  • I replaced the 80 GB internal hard drive with a Western Digital 500 Gig hard drive to my Playstation for the cost of the HD, about $79.00. Very easy to do!

  • I plan on remaining loyal to Sony as long it continues to support the PS3, but as prices for netbook, laptops, desktops and other internet capable devices continue to drop in price a little tinkering underhood ( More RAM not just Storage…Storage space is cheap at less than $2 a GB) would help Sony improve it’s Global Marketshare.

  • Thanks $ony. Another Premium PS3 without Premium features.

Kaz Hirai can shove his ‘turning a profit comes first and we’ve tricked the consumers into think they don’t need 4 USB ports, Super Audio CDs, Flash card readers and PS2 compatibility, and disguise that with a big hard drive’ where the sun don’t shine.

The PS2’s game library’s quality has never come into question, but yet theres not a single PS2 system on earth that doesn’t play games of its predecessor, the PSone. While Microsoft has discontinued SKUs of the Xbox 360, I give them props for the fact they’ve never removed features out of greed, and the fact all Xbox 360’s are ultimately capable of doing the same things.

Bring those features promised in 2006 back? Sure, I’ll dump my European 60GB that you STILL managed to [DELETED] with by removing the EE and I’ll buy a 250GB Slim.
Until then, fire his [DELETED] and bring back Ken Kutaragi.

  • will get one for my room.. have 2 in home.. need one more sweet

  • WOW, AWESOME. WE LOVE SONY

  • Great news Sony, and only for 50 dollars more!

  • I cant believe I was a XBOX fan back in the day, I am SOOOOO glad I bought a PS3, I absolutely love it, and I will support Sony from here on out! Thank you, and keep up the good work!!

  • Great Idea, but no Backwards compatibility… I don’t know what you thinking sony, but comon… We are loyal customers, and you can’t even add a patch to download for ps2 games… Even Xbox 360 has that option… I’m really not busting on you guys, but please do something about this… I downloaded the patch for the ps2 emulator on the ps3 store, but it doesn’t work on my sku… WTF is that…

  • Allyangel1989 has a point No BACKWARDS COMPATIBILITY. You Know what. Everyone who has not addressed this issue, please do so and leave Playstation a comment about this on your message, so that they get the hint. Atleast give us an emulator so we can play our ps2 games.

  • im really tempted on getting one but my 80gig works just as fine, ill see once it gets out

  • Nice price range.

  • You know, I already have a Backwards Compatible PS3, but I would still like to see the feature return, for my friends who have yet to get one. Also, I might like to buy another system, further down the road.

Honestly, I’m not sure why you guys don’t just release a premium PS3 option that comes with BC, 4 USB port (and perhaps a 5th on the back) and all of the bells and whistles.

The slim is nice for people who don’t care about having a PS2 library, but you must realize that there are a lot of us who have been buying PlayStation games for the past fourteen years.

It’s so nice, having a single system that can play all of those games.

If this is not to come back with the PS3 (what a shame), it had better be in there for the successor to the PS3.

  • Nice one. But please correct the custom partition utility of XMB, so we could use better the HDD.

  • when i get the money to buy a new ps3 that will take about a year =( becasue my beast 60gb just broke i hope i dont yellow light or power failure

  • LOL!
    Is this ps3 slim?
    Who needs a 250gb ps3?

  • dammit it i just bought the 120gb slim

  • i already got the 120gb slim i dont need another
