COMING SOON: NETFLIX MEMBERS CAN INSTANTLY WATCH MOVIES AND TV EPISODES STREAMED TO TVs VIA THE PLAYSTATION®3 COMPUTER ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEM

With Movies Streamed Instantly from Netflix, Blu-ray/DVD Playback and Downloadable Videos via the PlayStation®Network, the PlayStation 3 System Offers The Industry’s Most Comprehensive Options for Watching Movies and TV Shows

FOSTER CITY and LOS GATOS, Calif., October 26, 2009 – Sony Computer Entertainment America Inc. (SCEA) and Netflix, Inc. [Nasdaq: NFLX] today announced that they are joining forces to make thousands of movies and TV episodes from Netflix available to be streamed instantly to TVs via the PlayStation®3 (PS3™) computer entertainment system. Netflix expects to begin streaming via the PS3 system next month at no additional cost to Netflix members in the United States who have a PS3 system.

Today’s announcement pairs two of the most popular and fastest growing home entertainment brands in the U.S. The PS3 system’s installed base has reached close to 9 million units in the United States, and Netflix recently reported 11.1 million U.S. subscribers as of September 30.

The partnership further solidifies the PS3 system as the most complete home entertainment hub on the market today, enabling consumers to play high-definition games, watch Blu-ray movies, listen to music, view photos, browse the Internet, and download content from PlayStation®Network − from exclusive games to blockbuster movies and popular TV shows. PS3 system owners will soon enjoy an unparalleled experience watching their favorite movies and TV shows streamed instantly from Netflix, downloading from the PlayStation Network or watching Blu-ray/DVD media. The Netflix offering expands on the entertainment experience delivered to PS3 system owners via PlayStation Network.

For only $8.99 a month, Netflix members can instantly watch unlimited movies and TV episodes streamed to their TVs and computers via Netflix ready devices such as the PS3 system and can receive unlimited DVDs delivered quickly to their homes.

“The PlayStation 3 system has always been about more than just gaming, and it will soon be the only platform in the industry to offer consumers such a variety of convenient options for enjoying movies and TV shows,” said Jack Tretton, president and CEO, SCEA. “Whether you want to watch content on Blu-ray disc and DVD, download it from the PlayStation Network’s video delivery service, or stream videos instantly from Netflix, the PS3 system is the only solution that offers it all.”

“As instantly watching movies and TV episodes streamed from Netflix becomes an increasingly popular way to enjoy the Netflix service, our goal is to rapidly expand the devices that stream to our members,” said Netflix CEO and co-founder Reed Hastings. “As a leading game console and Blu-ray disc player, bringing Netflix to the PS3 system is a real win for both Netflix members and PS3 system owners.”

Initially, watching movies instantly streamed from Netflix via the PS3 system will be enabled by a free, instant streaming Blu-ray disc that is being made available to all Netflix members. The free instant streaming disc leverages Blu-ray’s BD-Live™ technology to access the Internet and activate the Netflix user interface on the PS3 system, which must be online via Wi-Fi or Ethernet.

Netflix members simply slide the disc into their PS3 systems to reveal movies and TV episodes that can be watched instantly. These titles are conveniently organized into a variety of categories based on members’ personal preferences, popular genres, new arrivals and members’ individual instant Queues. Members can use the Netflix Web site or navigate directly on their PS3 systems to add movies and TV shows to their Queues. With the PS3 system’s Wireless Controller, members can choose a movie to watch from their instant Queues or just play directly from any of the lists. They also have the ability to read synopses and rate movies. In addition, they have the option of fast-forwarding and rewinding the video stream via the Wireless Controller.

Netflix members and PS3 system owners can now reserve a free instant streaming disc for PS3 systems by going to www.netflix.com/ps3. Upon availability, the instant streaming disc will be delivered for free by first-class mail, generally one business day after members request it.

  • this was one of my reason why i had xbl so i could watch my movies on the tv but not for long xbl… free psn kicks ass.. i might just have 2 retire my 360

  • @ 543

Some games they release in the PSN store, are already on the 360 by months!

  • Think about it people we so and so much to either watch a movie or rent one on the PSN add up if your the type of person who has to watch the season of your show or the sequel to a movie..you will pay twice as much on the PSN compared to 8.99 a month so if you want to watch like 8 Episodes from family guy you just spent 15.92 on 8 shows when you can pay 8.99 one month your saving think about this is good Sony Do this and keep up the good Work

  • This is Awesome, another reason for the reason collection to own a PS3, nice move Sony :P

  • I’m very excited for sony. I think they’ll really come out on top over this holiday! I only own sony game products (all,) and have always been a fan. The current movie service is a little pricey for me at the moment, so Netflix is a perfect solution!

I’m really hoping for a firmware update so we don’t have to slide in a disc every time though.

  • Yes, this is great. Oh crap nm I live in Canada.

  • I hope it’s gonna work in Canada, since we don’t have a video store, this would be the very least to give us netflix! If we have it for Canada too, I’m in, if not, I’ll continue writting “canada?” in all the news on the video store, sadlY!

  • microsoft and x box just got t bagged… even though we already had a movie service

  • Hmm, makes me wonder about the media server function on the network setup options. What is it for?

Anyway, I hope we can stream blueray or highdefinition video without a problem through the service. Sort of when you get into the movie and then it needs to load for a bit and seperates you from the movie bubble land.

  • Here in Canada we aren’t able to access NetFlix… can the PSN somehow give us the same being offered through our version of NetFlix which is zip.ca?

    Please and Thanks!

  • I’m by no means an Xbox fan boy (I don’t even own one.) But what’s with all the “Suck it xbox” and thinking that we’re equal now? a friend of mine says that on xbox they can watch their netflix movies together (With their online friends.) Unless we can do that too…they still have it better than us. Even though they still hafta pay.

  • cant wait for dis one thank u sony!

  • finally!

  • Playstation is just releasing the disk to start the ps3 version sooner than having to wait a month or two. Their will be a icon or a section in the psstore for netflix with the next update so the disc is just a temporary thing

  • wow crazy! my PC, 360, & now my PS3 is gonna be netflix ready. I sure am getting my $12.95 membership worths! quite honeslty I’ve grown acustom to the 360 version, I hope they have even better interface. I wonder what other collaborations will the PS3 get, maybe myspace? facebook? last FM? Paragoda? iTunes? Youtube? <– Sony that is not a bad idea dont ya think?

  • THX PLAYSTAION THIS IS WHAT IAM TALKING ABOUT GET BACK ON THE TOP. IAM ROUTING FOR YA!

  • sounds good to me, but because I’m overseas (APO military address), I can’t access stuff like Netflix PS3:-(

  • @ Everyone complaining about PS3 Netflix being dsic-based:

This is the only way that we PS3 owners can actually get Netlix on our systems. Microsoft still has an exclusive contract as far as software applications go. Being on a disc is the saving-grace loophole that’s actually allowing us to be able to stream Netflix within the next 3-5 years.

  • nice! now that i got kicked out of live… ill just get my self some Netflixy! it beats paying for live… im getting some Netflixy…

  • I’m not thrilled about the disc, but how lazy can you guys be???

I’m currently a netflix subscriber, and very thrilled to be able to use the instant watch with the PS3. Now I dont have to spend the money on a seperate device.

    thanks!

  • Not in Canada right? :(

  • To the Canadians and people in the EU: Quit whining! You don’t have Netflix anyway.

Yeah, the disc thing is pretty awful but it will be nice to watch in the living room without dragging the laptop around.

  • cool but will it be available in canada

  • make the display aspect ratio of all films/tv episodes 1.78 so it fills our 16:9 full hdtv’s…we dont like big gigantic black bars coming from 2.35:1 dvd aspect ratios or 2.4:1 for bluray films…just make it full screen and itll succeed, the tv’s are shaped wide enough anyway, we dont need stupid black bars, its in our homes not a freakin movie theatre

  • and sony shouldn’t start charging for playstation network use…its gonna lose customers in one way or another

  • Awesome! I have been hoping that this would happen!

  • wow this is nice but i wish the price is cut like 4.99 since the movie would not be shipped to any address

  • Whoa! I knew I made the right decision to get a PS3 last week. I was an Xbox360 gamer until heating problem left me months without gaming (it’s fixed now though). I haven’t bought any games yet for the PS3 coz I want my first purchased game to be COD6. And just the other day, I tried to watch an HD movie (downloaded from the internet) on the PS3 via an external HDD… no problems whatsoever… the PS3 really is an awesome multimedia device!

  • @ Ice Snake
WHAT DO YOU MEAN STOP BEING LIKE THE 360???
Sony was in the gaming business BEFORE Microsoft! Furthermore, the 360 is stealing PlayStation exclusives like Tekken and Metal Gear Solid.

  • What if you got 2 ps3…can you watch on both ps3 with 1 netflix account?

  • man that new netflix thing gonna ruin everything…everybody dont have enough space for that crap

  • NxP3, yes you can watch a movie on both ps3 systems with one netflix account, but you will only one at a time (because of the disc).

This is great news, and as previously stated, the disc is only temporary in order to bypass the contract netflix has with Microsoft.

I’ve been using the Playon software for the past 6 months to stream netflix via my PS3 (along with Hulu and Amazon VOD). It’s worked great so far, but I may not need it anymore with this addition. Thanks Sony, my 360 will continue to gather dust until Splinter Cell comes out.

  • This is what is up go sony!

  • heak yeah! I’m prolly gonna sell my 360 now! Aint no point in keepin it now! Kudos Sony!!!!

  • I wish us Canadians could get this service as well via Zip.ca or something because we’ve got a long winter ahead of us and this is the perfect thing. We kinda get screwed when it comes to downloadable video content via PSN.

    please!!

  • The PSN video store is nothing like this. You don’t have to pay for each movie individually. You pay 8.99/month and you can watch all the movies you want.

  • Net Flix on Ps3!Glorious!!!!

  • Awesome, just got the email that my disc will be arriving tomorrow… can’t wait!

Aceboy, this won’t take up room on your PS3 – the movies are streamed.

  • i want a 360 and a PS3

  • sony and microsoft should team up and make an playstation 360 or an xboxstation or something im sick of the rivelry half of the work goes to sony and the other half goes to microsoft.microsoft works on the disighn and you guys work on whats going inside.and they’ll give u tips and you’ll give them tips if u want u can change between the 360’s dashbaord or the PS3 main menu or whatever its called i forgot.so people like me wont be in the situation of getting a PS3 Slim or an XBOX360 because of GTA4.Please please reply back of what u think of the idea.thank you.

  • Great, Netflix has a much larger library than the PSN and for 8.99 unlimited downloads, you can’t beat it. There will probably be a firmware update in the future, so we won’t have to keep putting that disc in every time we want to watch a movie. Thanks PSN and Netflix….

  • This SUCKS!!! Netflix teams with sony great idea but disc based software and NO surround sound while streaming a HD movie What gives?!?!?!?

  • just got my netflex CD for the PS3
    LOVE IT .

  • As one person commented that this will be part of an update. I am not to sure about that as I received my Netflix CD in the mail yesterday and it states that the Netflix CD has to be in the PS3 in order to stream Netflix Movies. To me Xbox 360 did it right by adding the capability to their update! Hopefully PS3 will follow suit down the road!

  • marcelo112 – in an perfect world there would only be 1 gaming console. I doubt it will ever happen. I agree that there should only be 1 console and then sony, microsoft & nintendo can work on games. As we all know they lose money on consoles. Games is where the money is at. So if there was 1 console that could play any game would be awesome and would only happen in a perfect world!

  • this is awesome!!!

I’m an xbox and a ps3 owner. ps3 is really starting to win my heart. Year to Date you guys have really ramped up your interface and online services. I’m excited!

  • Hulu next please!!

  • Nice job, Sony! U guys rock, Nintendo sucks (well, not da DS/DS Lite, da Wii , & da DSi – these systems still rock but u still rock Sony), & Microsoft will probably try 2 add in more new features such as da internet browser & a built in HD-DVD/Blu-ray player. Who knows? Maybe they’ll end up making more systems just 2 have da awesome features that Sony has. My dad is considering getting a 360 4 his place because of da Netflix feature but I won’t tell him about dis because I’m already saving up 4 a PS3 2 play at my mom’s place – now I might be able 2 have both systems & my dad’s place might just get a bit more exciting. Here’s how I rank da companies: 1st place – Sony/Microsoft 2nd place – Nintendo (like I said, da DS/DS Lite , da Wii, & da DSi still rock, but da other systems SUCK) In short, don’t get systems from Nintendo that aren’t da DS/DS Lite, da Wii, or da DSi. Of course, u might want 2 at least get an older PS3 (2 play PS2 games – should u still be interested in them & newer ones 4 more space) Regular PS3’s & Slim PS3’s both have specialties.

  • Here are da specialities. Regulars can install other operating systems while da slims can synchronize a Bravia TV remote to use with da slim PS3. If PS3s r 2 complex 4 u, start out with the PSP Go. (It’s the most advanced PSP yet) Well, that’s all I’ve got 2 say 4 now. Keep up da good work, Sony! [Hmmm, if only a disc wasn’t required 2 start da Netflix 4 da PS3.]
