MAG Beta 4 Starts…Now!

Jeremy Dunham's Avatar Posted by on Nov 09, 2009 // Sr. Community Manager, Zipper Interactive

Hello everyone,

My name is Jeremy Dunham (PSN ID: zpr_DunhamSmash), Zipper Interactive’s new Senior Community Manager, and I wanted to share some news regarding our latest MAG beta program that we’re kicking off right now. Starting today, we’ve officially moved into our next Beta phase – Beta 4. We’ve made more than 6,000 changes from our last phase to Beta 4, not the least of which include an increased level cap from 40 to 60, a retooled skill tree and experience curve, and an improved ranking system – all based on the feedback from our diligent testing crew.

We’ve also introduced two new major features to Beta 4. We’ve implemented the oft-asked about “proximity chat” feature that allows you to hear enemies communicating as you get closer, or trash talk them yourself as you punch ‘em full of lead. We’ve also introduced Shadow War bonuses. Depending on which PMCs are leading in the number of contracts owned, the entire PMC will earn different bonuses based on gametype. Leading in Sabotage adds experience points, leading in Acquisition increases leadership aura distance, and leading in Domination decreases tactical strike cooldown time.

MAG Beta 1.4 for PlayStation

Other new additions to Beta 4 include improvements to character hit detection and reactions, skill tuning that sees many of the existing skills amped up, refined Leadership abilities and experience points, and numerous other changes that our eagle-eyed testers have spotted over the last cycle.

Beta 4 is exclusive to GameStop pre-orders, and we’ve moved away from our limited pre-scheduled play times and are keeping the servers open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. With the change in versions and the last phase now at its end, many of the testers who spent their evenings with us over these last weeks are moving on to other pastures. With that in mind, it’s with great respect that on behalf of the entire MAG team, I want to say thanks to each and every one of you who participated for your hard work, patience, and dedication. Just remember, though, you don’t have to say goodbye just yet. If you still want to participate in our current beta that ends on November 20, all you have to do is pre-order MAG at your local GameStop in the USA and EB Games in Canada to get you the exclusive code you need.

Finally, I wanted to take a moment to let you know that over at MAG.com, we’ve launched our developer blog, which will provide an ongoing behind-the-scenes look at MAG over the next few months before the game launches on January 26, 2010.

Thanks again and I’ll see you on the battlefield.

You were looking for another person with the problem of codes from GameStop. Add one more to the list. This is the reply I’ve been getting: “We don’t have any. We only get a few so call back later, we’re getting merchandise this afternoon”. That’s everytime I ask for it.

P.S. I’m tired of calling back later.

+ saik on November 9th, 2009 at 5:11 pm said:

Well looks like you guys will have another pre-order from me. The only thing I didn’t like about the previous beta was the limited schedule. The hours I work does not allow me to play not even for 20 minutes before I either need to sleep or go to work.

Thank god it’s going to be a 24/7 beta, now I can actually play and test. :D

+ ruleterren on November 9th, 2009 at 5:21 pm said:

Will people who participated in the beta from september 17th – november 3rd still be able to participate with the current beta installed in our systems or is there a update or a whole new BETA is only for people who pre ordered cause I spent 20 somethin dollars on qore to play with the beta and im hoping qore subscribers can still get in.

+ aztec23 on November 9th, 2009 at 5:23 pm said:

Gonna get MW2 at midnight. Mag hasn’t really impressive me yet maybe you should send me a beta.

+ Vinz__Clortho on November 9th, 2009 at 5:37 pm said:

I pre-ordered a couple of days ago at an EBgames here in Canada and when I asked about beta codes they didn’t know anything about it.

+ glennis1 on November 9th, 2009 at 5:40 pm said:

ok i have had the beta since the qore beta released and i used my preorder code deleted the old beta download/installed the new one now if i go to play it says i need to sign out update system and game is this the error you referred to and am i the only on?

Haha… I didn’t know Jeremy Dunham moved to Zipper Interactive after IGN. Congrats on your new position!

Also, I was a poor soul who didn’t get his PS3 Slim quick enough to subscribe to Qore and get into the beta. I know that I can still pre-order the game from Gamestop to get a beta key, but buying the game in order to try it out and see if I like it seems a little backwards. Are there any other ways to get into the beta? At the very least, will there be some sort of demo around the launch of the game?

+ WCKidRock on November 9th, 2009 at 5:58 pm said:

OK so I just got off the phone after a 30 minute call with ebgames canada support and she said that the pre order beta is only for Gamestop US customers only!!!! she told me that if you know that canadians are supposed to be able to get access to the beta that you might have a code..

so not to get upset at you Jeremy, but i did get mad at them for telling me to clear up THEIR communication with you.

so please if there is any way that Canadians can get in on the beta it would be much appreciated if I could be contacted as I was in the beta since day one and have noticed the huge improvements and would like to see if indeed the earlier problems have been addresses.

sorry to vent, but have been trying to get clear info on this from EBgames/Gamestop for the last month…I wasn’t too worried as I still had access to the beta up till last week.

+ Dagitt on November 9th, 2009 at 6:27 pm said:

You can add another Canadian that is getting the runaround from EB Games Canada. Pre-Ordered on Oct 13th, and still no Beta Code. I really want to get in on the beta.

+ Viprdude on November 9th, 2009 at 6:51 pm said:

Pretty messed up you let the people that made the game what it is now out in the cold and then to top it off, you open it up 24/7…..that is not a good thanks.

+ robotros on November 9th, 2009 at 7:41 pm said:

wow alot of whining. to me thats a good thing for Zipper it shows people liked the game SO much that they Dont want to be left out.

I have been in the beta since 1.2 and can say that with the improvements made in 1.3 1.4 should be a worthy of at least 40$ itself.

I have pre-ordered 3 copies of this game already, but wont be pqart of 1.4 since I gave my pre-order keys to friends and clan mates since I was already in the beta.

but I have no regrets and MW2 is out today. I’m looking forward to setting MW2 on my shelf on putting MAG into my ps3 in january.

The whole “no-beta-keys-for-Canadians” thing is really pissing me off.

If it had been announced as a US only beta right from the start, I wouldn’t mind. But now, on one side, you, Jeremy, tell us that we’re elligible and on the other end, EB Games stores don’t have the beta keys.

There seems to be a communication problem somewhere.

The worst part is that by the time the issue is settled, the beta will have ended.

Mind you, that’s the very same story for Battlefield: Bad Company 2’s beta.

Doesn’t this game come out January 26th? O_o

It seems like precious time is running out, now that the holidays are just around the corner.

Anyhow, I’m surprised to see your name here Jeremy. Didn’t expect that at all…congrats on the new job! I think you can do better than Robert Bowling.

The downside about all this beta talk is that it comes right as people about to jump onto the modern warfare 2 bandwagon. I’m not even sure how much time I’ll be dropping on the MAG beta. I would’ve put in more earlier but the limited hours was a killer (I typically work a 10-7 shift so by the time I’d get seated in front of the t.v., the beta hours would already be over for the night).

Mr. Dunham, I’ve taken part in MAG Beta since phase one. MAG has been a great experience and has really made a massive inpression on me along with some other members i’ve met. I really wish i cold of experience and shared a piece of mind and flaunt on some of my rival PMC’s counterparts with this new feature “proximity chat”! Unforinetly this feature would do no good in half the instances in which i really wanted to share my “chat” with these dang Snipers! especially when i am parachuting in. Respawned for 3 seconds and then PoP!Bleedout! Well again great game we had a great time, and i will be seeing you in the field! RRRAAAAVVVVEEEEENNNN!! S.V.E.R., i’m coming for you!

+ Ivan- on November 10th, 2009 at 12:23 am said:

I wish there was a public beta for this game. Also they should have one to really test the game a private beta is not good enough to test such a massive game.

i went to preorder it from EB today and they said they have not heard anything about the codes.
is this another exclusive to US and CA thing?

“hey thanks mag team for the awesome beta. I’ve played it all weekend long. the ONLY problem in the beta is that it’s not the full 256 player but 128 per game…. but that keeps me waiting for the game that comes out!! :)”

ok here’s the explanation of that. there are 128 people per platoon. there are two platoons in a match. 128×2=256.

+ the_lone_wolf_42 on November 10th, 2009 at 7:49 am said:

oh yea, what exactly are the pre-order goodies? is it just access to the beta or something else? gamestop wouldnt give me a straight answer. give me a link at the least if it’s been posted before.

here is a Idea for M.A.G.

Since Valve does not seem to intend to develop for the PS3 i think a Zombie-Mode for MAG would be a fun rip off!

There could be 4 Shotgun Soldiers VS 252 Zombie Players. No AI-Zombies everyone would be a Online-Player! The Goal would be to kill all the Zombies or a certain amount in a set time frame or for the Zombies to kill the Soldiers, or hide until they run out of time (or Ammo) The Zombies would not have weapons, and maybe be slower than the Soldiers.

What do you think? Would you want to play a Zombie?

By the way, if someone from Zipper or Sony reads this, i am available for Game development :D

These guys are awesome. They really care about this game and the direction its going in!!! The quality of play and graphics are 1000 times better than COD! Notice the detail appearing lately with the trees swaying and birds flying. It almost looks 3D, so even inclining not to buy the game is also inclining to me your Mom wont buy it for you. Remember Call of Duty is a glorified add on upgrade but still very boxy map boards with little perspective in the horizon. This is real scenerio attacks & defends with many objectives to overcome to finally as a TEAM we can all enjoy rewards and benifits towards our next charector. This game is in a league of its own!!!!

Great! when I needed to DL 1.4 I typed it on google, and found this. The server times were a real pain so thanks a lot! Also I’m glad the vehicle spinning spawn was fixed! Only 10 days left of mag beta goodness though… BEST ONLINE EVAR. I’m pre-ordering it now! (I got into the EU beta draws)

+ bushisprez on November 10th, 2009 at 11:20 am said:

I think players who have Qore were still able to play the gamestop beta since they were the same thing? I played in the last beta pahse that ended on Sat. and am currently participating in the gamestop beta.

Gotta say my biggest complaint is that you can find little to no matches and everything is set to domination/(base capture) and when we enter a match theyre are hardly any players on the others team the max I’ve played 15 against 3? The game is certainly “MASSIVE” but this could hurt the game big time. COD:MW2 is most likely going to prevent sales of M.A.G.

This is the definition of suck. Thanks for opening the servers to 24/7. this makes all the difference in the world!

would i need to re-re-re-download it game file despite the game updating my old install from Phase 3?

also Phase 3 sucks for only having 1 bad mode available (hard as nails to beat Valor if they defend) and the Directives option would be more useful if it had more then 1 option to let you join in

Why do game publishers constantly make it so you have to pre-order a game from a specific vendor? I preordered MAG from Amazon many many months ago, the very day it first showed up and didn’t even have a graphic by its name. I had to be one of the first 1000 if not 100 people to pre order it in the nation, so I don’t see how the heck I dont qualify for a code when some smuck who pre-orders today is going to get it and I dont. *sigh* – This practice just hurts an IP imho.

I’m becoming annoyed at EBGames Canada. Their website is updated infrequently with promotions when compared to their American site, and you cannot buy from an online store in Canada in order to avoid horrendous shipping fees. I ended up having to preorder from their American site though because the EBGames in Canada has no clue about when they will be getting beta codes and there is no easily accessible store in my town… very disappointing.

THE VOTE/KICK IMPLEMENTATION is a bad thing when the only servers are by the developers of the game. This rule will be used to discriminate other players.

Players who do not speak the same language as the other 7 players in a squad will be voted out. If you became a leader for that squad beware!

Players who has physical limitations are deemed to have no contribution to the squad or the platoon will be kicked out.

I can only guess that retaliations will be carried out by players who were voted out!
