WARNING: DO NOT buy any video content from the PSN if you think you ps3 will ever break. My “original” ps3 went south recently, and since it was out of warrenty I decided to purchase a new model instead of getting my old one repaired. I found out that the only way to “de-activate” a ps3 is on that ps3 itself.. so if its broken, you can NEVER deactivate it. I had already recycled my original ps3 (in an environmentally friendly way) before I found this out. I was told “you should have spent the $200 to get it repaired, there is nothing we can do”. I was flabbergasted… I can NEVER EVER download and watch ANY video content on my ps3 ever again! It let me purchase a video, but once they had my money I had no way to download it. And I NEVER will. That is what gets me, the “you are out of luck FOREVER” thing. I had been planning on buying my son a PSP Go! for Christmas and downloading all of the Star Wars Clone Wars for him to watch on it (along with some games). But I will NEVER be able to do this for him. Thanks, Sony!!!

By the way Sony, I will be posting the above comment every week on here. And I have been posting it on every ps3 website I can find. As much as I love my ps3, this one issue has ruined it for me. The “It Just Does Everything” isn’t true in my case anymore.

Thanks for the updates! I was wondering, why have you stopped access to the video store through the PSP? I just logged in with my PSPgo about 10 minutes ago to get UP! and the video button no longer shows in the PlayStation Store home page. Just wondering, thanks!

@klep – u should be able to unless u game shared with someone else. They allow u 2 downloads per movie/episode so I would think it would still work. U should be able to redownload everything but this is the reason why I backup my ps3 every few months so I don’t lose anything just in case. Sorry to hear that man keep calling sony. Are u using the same account from your old ps3?

+ SPOOKULA209 on November 13th, 2009 at 6:10 am said:

Oh by the way they can reset it they normally just refuse too because game sharing is so rampant. Maybe the video and game activation and deactivation is different. The refused to reset mine when I told them I had multiple ps3s a few months ago

I would like to see what new anime has released from here since I can’t tell by looking at the names of the episodes.
@6 – I now deactivate my refurbished (launch model) PS3 after i’m done playing downloaded games in case my PS3 decides to fail. I also eject the disc after i’m done playing but this only lessens the chance of losing a game or system activation due to “YLoD”.

Great update! I thought you meant movies for sale starting at $1.99, but you meant rental price starting at $1.99, right?

@ #6 KlepDog: Are you saying that you bought stuff from the video store, downloaded it, than your PS3 broke? You can backup your PS3 in case it does break, for future referance. You can also copy videos that you buy on to a PSP.

There’s something that really, REALLY bothers me about the Video Store interface for some reason. The “Popular Movies” box on the right, there’s this huge gap to the left of all of the movie titles. It looks really bad from a design/UI point of view.

The Game Store has dates in that spot, but since there are not dates associated with those movies, you end up with a strange looking empty space.

I’m sure it’s not priority, but please fix that. Add in release dates or move the titles over or something.

You can now backup the movies thanks to a firmware update. But since the DRM you can only restore to the PS3 that downloaded it. So your breaks and you get a refurbished unit. It won’t work. Video AFAIK is limited to one PS3. You can clear it out but not redownload. They admitted the short sidedness of this. I think they allow you to call and get the video downloads reset once as a courtesy, but only once and you have to call.

I know this is off topic, but just wanted to say the Netflix service that was just added to the PS3 is awesome! I got my disc last night and checked it out. Was very surprised at the quality, selection, and user interface.

Thanks for adding this FREE (minus Netflix account)feature. I could see myself using this frequently.

Man the PS3 is rollin!

I did get the dreaded “Yellow Ring”, and had backed up my videos. The problem is, my new ps3 is not “Activated” to play or download anything. And I can’t activate it because my broken system is the activated one. Keep in mind, this is VIDEO only. I had no issues re-downloading all of my purchased game content. I am using the same account I have had since day one.

Grace,

Any word when the 24fps judder issue will be fixed? This has been narrowed to the PS3′s video player, and some acknowledgment that the issue has been reproduced internally would be nice.

To re-state the problem: downloaded and streaming videos encoded at 24fps are forced into 30fps playback by the PS3′s video player, resulting in a video artifact known as judder. (Automatic 3:2 detection is somehow circumvented on TVs that support it, as well.) Multiple people have reported this, and all of us can view 24fps Blu-ray titles without the judder motion artifact. This affects SD and HD content on both the PSN Video Store and Netflix.

Please, please acknowledge this issue and provide estimations/recommendations for a workaround or fix.

Thanks!

Grace…

I have been asking you this for over a year…off and on…for once time it was weekly for 4 mos straight.

Since you will not comment on a fix to the DRM situation perhaps you could do some CUSTOMER SERVICE and actually write a blog post about what you can and cannot do with Video content.

As seen in this thread…many people think the backup function will rescue you from a borked machine. It emphatically does not yet the perception is out there.

Please do your customers, who continue to support you and your company, the favour of CLEARY stating what some of us are painfully aware of.

: If you buy video content and your system goes in for repairs you will lose your video content and the SONY Terms of Service state that SONY is under absolutely no obligation to assist recovering what may be hundreds of dollars worth of content. The backup function does not help this situation one iota :
