PlayStation 3 Firmware (v3.10) Update Preview

1,272 0

Hi everyone, here’s an early peek at PlayStation 3 (PS3) firmware update (v3.10). The latest update incorporates Facebook into the PS3 experience. By linking your PlayStation Network account to your Facebook account, you will have the option for the PS3 to automatically update your Facebook News Feed with Trophy and PlayStation Store activity. This update also enables developers to set specific criteria in their titles to publish additional game information to your News Feed. You can then check out your updates, and those of your friends, on Facebook, Twitter, and other social media favorites through the PS3’s built-in web browser.

This is just the beginning of our integration with Facebook and we are looking forward to adding new features enhancing the experience in future updates.

Additional highlights from update 3.10 include:

  • The Photo category on the XMB has been revamped to make it easier to see more of your photos stored on the PS3.
  • The PSN Friends List has been modified based on feedback we received after update 3.00. Additionally, you can now choose a color for your PSN ID on the XMB.

To get a preview of what’s coming in update 3.10, check out the video below:

We’re looking forward to releasing firmware update 3.10 soon. As always, we appreciate your feedback.

  • can sony support a pants drying device?
just so my pants get dry? i really need the PS3’s firmware to dry my pants…

as if sony is going to respond to any of this.

  • Can’t wait.

  • When will it be out?

  • I do applaud Sony for listening. The next thing we need is to update the profile information to give a more detailed description of ourselves. Other than that, things seem to be looking awesome for us PS3 buyers. Any chances on a more interactive online?

  • Not too bad.

As for upcoming FW updates here are the things I’d like to see.

    – New, more simple and smart In-game XMB
    – XGC (Xross Game Chat)
    – Remove the box and ticketer and make your Message/Friends Icons larger as well as your avatar.
    – Clean up the XMB Put the Photo/Music/Videos all in a icon called Media and then break it down from there.

    – Minor things like when in a chat room being able to just hit Square when on a friend to send them an invite to the room.

  • in game cross chat and new xmb design would be nice..IM SO SICK AND TIRED TO SEE THE SAME XMB DESIGN SINCE I FIRST GOT MY PSP BACK IN 05 THAT’S HALF A DECADE…PLEASE NEW DESIGN…THANK YOU

  • Well, this should be interesting for people that are into trophies, but myself I might pass on it, haven’t decided yet. Maybe I’ll give it a whirl but if I think it’s annoying then I’m gonna ignore it.

I’m not too wild about trophies and I imagine that most of my friends on facebook probably care even less about the trophies I unlock (maybe 4 or 5 out of 391 friends would care, and even then they’d probably pay more attention to which game I got the trophy on than the trophies themselves).

  • Nice update,

Is there anyway the downloads from the PSN store can be made more stable? It can be frustrating downloading over 1GB of data only to get the dreaded 80029564 error.

    Cheers.

  • Nice Features. I’ll be looking forward to it.

I don’t have to tell you guys what features to integrate because you know that already.

I just can suggest for you guys to come up with a more decent, more practical, and more faster in-game XMB. A lot of us, gamers know you guys had a lot of problems building an in-game XMB, the same is happening to Cross Chat we all hope it can get here before next Gen.

I’ll suggest to just support what you already have implemented, let’s start with premium Avatars, there hasn’t been a sign of life about them. Music and Dynamic Themes; In-game music is a feature that needs to be universal.

Make a policy where every developer needs to make content for the Store; including Playstation Home clothing, and Dynamic Themes the same day their game is released. Gamers are crazy about certain games and having everything on day one would put more joy on their lives.

I hope my feedback isn’t a waste of my time neither yours.

  • that’s freaking awesome guys, but can you also make that option for twitter? which is really the website that’s actually used for updates? (and this is a minor suggestion but when you hit the ps button while in a game, you see your friends and what they’re playing under their ID, but when you look @ yourself, underneath you ID is noothing… which is just a bit annoying, thanks)

  • I hope this ACTUALLY make Facebook work better on the PS3 browser, because right now, I can’t even view my feed

  • Nice touch with the Facebook feature. I starting to like the 3.10 update already. Comment no. 21 brought a good point though. Since PSP has Skype, will the PS3 get Skype? It will good for people who have the PSEYE, and wants video chat with friends through the Skype network. As for this big “cross game chat” feature everybody wants, is it possible to have Skype intergated in gameplay? That way we can voice chat and video chat with other Skype users while we are playing a game. It will be a heck of a lot better than the 360s cross chat feature, and people will have more use for there PSEYE. They probably might even sell more.

  • FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL AFTER ALL THE HYPE ABOUT CROSS GAME CHAT LEAKED BY UNCHARTED DEV INFO AND STILL NOT HERE YET YOU GUYS HAVE TO BE THE WORST TEAM THAT SONY EVER PUT TOGETHER WOW 360 BEEN HAVING IT SINCE LAUNCH SONY LAGGING BEHIND THIS GEN I’M OUT GOING TO PLAY SOME GEARS LATERZ PEACE…

  • Please for the love of everything good in this world, just give us some freaking new and good avatars.

Demon’s Souls, LBP, Uncharted 2 (characters other than Drake), Fallout 3, Valkyria Chronicles, MGS4, Borderlands, and other avatars. I think we deserve new avatars by now, don’t you?

I refuse to ever join facebook.

  • now just need the following:

    1) Twitter

    2) Netflix app on the PS3 instead of having to have this stupid disc in all the time.

    3) Mac version of the Media GO

    4) Real Parental Controls… Maybe ability to password protect User Accounts…..

  • Are we going to get Twitter too?

  • I can already access Facebook, Twitter, etc. via the PS3’s web browser, so to me, this additional integration is something of a bonus in that it’s a more streamlined way of putting up PSN Trophy status updates and the like.

  • Awesome guys! I like the sound of this

  • mkv file support would be great..

  • Sounds neat! But I have quick question, will this update fix the Disc Auto Start? It doesn’t seem to since the “Whats New” was introduced. I turned the “Whats New” off, and yet it still doesn’t automatically start the disc in the drive.

Anyways, looking forward to the update as always!

  • Can’t stress this enough. I really can’t.

    1. Why are we still stuck with oversized, unappealing standard TV set font? What the hell happened to our HD font, with was smaller and more covenient?

    2. We need new avatars. Been 3 years and we still don’t have any new ones. Are you guys seriously forgetting this?

    3. I keep getting errors while trying to sync my newly obtained trophies. It stops half way and gives me a numerical error.

    4. /facepalm.

    That is all.

  • @VxMEdgeworth

Forgot about that, It would be very nice to have a better profile. The current ones look like they where done in MS Paint, the changing color thing is nice but looks very unprofessional and some what childish. I know Sony could do much better.

Also I been working on an XMB redesign I’ll have the link to it when I get the Flash coding done. I think you all and Sony as well will be impressed.

  • HORRIBLE update once again. nobody cares about facebook. we want cross game chat. god sony you guys are so dumb.

  • If you are looking forward to the communities feedback, where is cross game chat? Also for that matter where is universal xmb game invites? Home you say? Try again! Eric you need to quit your job and direct yourself some where else if you won’t listen to what we as your consumers want!

  • Still no cross game chat? *sigh*

  • Where the bleeping bleep is bleeping In-Game Chat???

  • WAIT is that a mic on the top right? x game chat?

  • here’s the feed back: you should add a party system feature. come on! if you are not going to add it at least tell us that you are not and why not

  • Hopefully we can link our Facebook and PSN accounts so we can add Facebook friends to our PSN friends list if they also have a PSN account. That would really help me expand my friends list.

  • All you xmb programming guys gotta do is put in cross game chat and I swear there wouldn’t be any rioting everytime there’s a new firmware lol. There’s 200 comments of people with torches and pitchforks asking for cross game chat everytime.

  • Nice =D That update to the browser, will it be improving the browser overall or just on facebook?

  • This looks extremely cool.. Awesome job!

  • Thanks, Sony. Now I will patiently wait for Twitter integration.

  • The Firmware feature that that is really needed is the ability to add a Nickname for each of our friends in the friends list. I don’t know about most of you but as my friends list grows it gets harder to remember who is who. I would love an A.K.A. field next to the PSN ID that would be private to only me so that I can enter my friends real name.

  • GUYS! battlefield Bad company 2 Beta keys are here! signup for free and login and voila! i jsut got my code! only for NA residents.

    http://www.fileplanet.com/promotions/battlefield-bad-company-2/

  • this sounds awesome. i am excited. since i am part of all three social communities (facebook myspace and twitter) i hope in the future you can work out features for them as well.

lastly, it would be great to have new avatars to go along with the new trophy card colors.

  • Those are some really cool features..
Thanks a lot for this nice firmware update..

  • So why can’t some basic Trophy information be posted IN THE BOX when you scroll through your friends list?

Also, put out some Premium Avatars already or remove the feature.

  • So the Facebook integrating on PS3 is not a rumor. Nice Update though, now when are we going to get cross game chat like many of us to demand.

  • I look forward to a Twitter announcement!

  • Thanks for the short video on this update Eric.

Suggestion: Have the PlayStation Blog and boardsus.playstation.com dedicated on the ‘What’s New’ tab. It would help if we click on them while we’re signed onto PSN for it to link directly w/o needing to sign in again on the page. Of course, only if it’s possible and/or taken unto consideration. Thank You again.

  • Wow! That’s amazing! It looks like it won’t be even 10 years before we finally get the cross-game voice chat, voice messages and many other things that gamers actually want! Halleluja! :D

  • Thanks for fixing the friends list! Now where are those new avatars you promised us ages ago?

  • WHERE IS CROSS GAME CHAT?!
WHERE IS THE ABILITY TO LEAVE VOICE MESSAGES?!

    THIS UPDATE IS POINTLESS!!!!

    FAIL

  • I hope this means you’re massively updating the near-broken and useless browser?

Do you want to run the plug-in?

  • Hey Sony, how about giving us the ability to stealth sign into PSN, that way we can go into the store and purchase content without being bombarded with invites and PM’s and stuff.

  • Very cool stuff. I know there won’t be anymore major firmware updates for 2009, but hopefully you can add more features to PS3’s XMB like Twitter and other popular social interaction applications out there. Would also like to see more variety with our presentation of our gamer profiles, looking through each of my friends on the list, each profile still sort of looks plain– colors were a great touch though to differentiate between each of us in the list, so great job. And as many PSN players always stress, hopefully, hopefully, hopefully, you guys will bring out a party system of some sort and cross game chat for next year, that would really just make the PSN online gaming experience even greater!

  • new photo brower=EPIC Kudos to Sony.

  • great news about the avatar i dont care about the facebook tho

  • You know, I often wonder why there’s never a simple addition such as typographic elements. Having to download a particular theme or something of the sort just to “stylize” my XMB, gets dull. And it’s always the same fonts. Classic, rounded or pop. Why could’nt just one (or two) of the new updates come with some new fonts to individualize all of our accounts little by little. So when we go online and see each other in a room or on PS Home, we can all see the way we would like our proper names to be written. Anywho, just “thinking” out loud.
