It Only Does Blu-ray Movies

Next week’s Thanksgiving holiday marks the kick-off to the traditional retail holiday selling season. It’s a key part of our year as many people who may not be hardcore gamers begin their research for the hottest gift items. Naturally, we expect the PS3 to be on a lot of those lists this year. This holiday’s PS3 campaign marks one of our most aggressive approaches in terms of our advertising reach and frequency, so we hope you’ve seen the new commercials while watching your favorite TV programs. I’ve been receiving a lot of emails from friends and family and hearing from a lot of you who are catching the commercials regularly and laughing even after the third or fourth helping. We couldn’t be more pleased by the overwhelming response, not just to the ads, but also evidenced by the sheer momentum behind our recent sales numbers. I’d like to personally welcome all of the new PS3 owners to what will be one of our best years ahead.

Beyond the amazing line up of Blu-ray games hitting this holiday, we’re also expecting some blockbuster Blu-ray movie releases, including Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and Star Trek. We’ve also announced some really groundbreaking initiatives that make Blu-ray synonymous with movie watching. In December, consumers will have access to the first-ever hybrid disc that will feature Sony Picture’s District 9 movie and a demo of God of War 3. This is a true testament to the endless opportunities ahead for Blu-ray and entertainment. And if you’re already an existing Netflix consumer, now you can access both your Blu-ray disc movies and stream 17,000 movies and TV shows from one machine – the PS3.

Readers of this blog are of course, already aware that the PS3 comes built in with one of the industry’s best Blu-ray players. But we wanted a spot that would hammer home the Blu-ray movie advantage and speak to this broader audience that may not be as familiar with the PS3’s feature set. So we asked Kevin Butler to bestow some wisdom in this exchange with an unhappy teenager who is complaining his grandmother is hogging the PS3 to watch Blu-ray movies. You can catch this commercial on air starting next week. For you, our loyal fans, here’s the exclusive sneak peek:

We’d love to hear what your favorite spots are so far. We certainly are having a hard time just picking one. We still have a couple more special updates on the way, so make sure to check in next weekend. More to come.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone,

Peter

  • Seriously, the new PS3 ads are awesome. Very funny.

  • Hahahaha… oh boy this one is hilarious as usual. Why can’t we have these funny commercials in Europe.

  • And indeed, quit the whining. The guys at Sony are aware of the issues.

Plus the aroma candles in the bathroom commercial is still the most hilarious of all…

  • This one isn’t as funny as the others …

the uncharted one and the montage one are my favorites …

  • BUt the “unknow organisation” ratchet and clank is in a special spot

  • These get funnier and funnier everytime!!
    “With a stick!”
    “Slurp”

  • @ 139 UnholierThanThou:

Be quiet dude…Wow, OBVIOUSLY if it’s too difficult for you to grasp…people DO care about this feature.
    Clearly a lot care!!!

Just because something is not important to you, doesn’t mean it’s not to others.
People like you truly are lower on the food chain.
You must be American…not that all are bad, but only US citizens tend to poke fun round’ here… which is pretty synonymous with everything in life regarding USA opinion.
If it’s not important to you, then it must not be important right?

Seriously, as if you would think that a feature like cross game chat wouldn’t be useful? There are so many improvements that are needed across the platform software…some small, some large…but all useful to someone.
Functionality is always number one on the list. And every idea further improves functionality, no matter how stupid you find it to be.
If you’re not going to use personal opinion for productivity, keep your tongue behind your teeth…or in this case your hands in your pockets…a familiar game I’m sure.

Some people’s children I tell ya!

  • LOL and kid you don’t want to know what she did next with the stick.

  • Another great commercial Sony, keep up the awesome work!!! It seems like everything is clicking for the PS3 to have a great holiday season.

I just hope these Kevin Butler commercials keep showing up on the PlayStation Store for download. I think only the Rumor Monger, Desperate Dad, Montage, and Candle commercials are up.

This new Blu-Ray commercial, the Uncharted commercial, and the Ratchet and Clank commercial would be awesome to download!!!!

  • lol that ad is great, funny stuff

  • Very funny commercial! Made me laugh. :)

  • Sony, you are not good at marketing.

  • no that statement isn’t entirely true, the new systems kinda suck cause they cant play ps2 and ps1 games. MY older ps3 can do that and a hole lot more =D meantime, excellent commercials, its about time they brought back that “playstation!” voice at the end. finally. lol

  • It only does blu-ray because There are no good PS3 games, and no video store so its bassically a $400 Blu-ray player

  • Kevin Butler
    VP, Ruling your FACE!

As silly as it may sound, I have all the Dear Playstation commercials that are available on PSN on my HDD. I watch them repeatedly. I think it’s a fantastic campaign and hope it runs for a long time to come.

  • Haha nice work. Excellent movie choice as well.

I really liked the “B3YOND” ads too. They had a more bad azz attitude and were more game oriented.

  • God of love these adds. I think the only one I have seen that didn’t blow me away was the one with the secret organization where they “already put money” in his account.

Not bad considering how man you have released!

  • hahaha this is another reason why PS3 is better than xbox. PS3 FOR LIFE!

  • it is about time, sony has come up with catchy commercials. i love the ps3 commercials. I remember back in the days i only saw one catchy commercial for the playstation game call NFS 3 Hot pursuit and it was a grandma driving a lamborgini ditching the cops. it was awesome and the only time i saw a sweet funny commercial

  • That was AWESOME!!!!

  • Kevin Butler is FUNNY!!!!!

  • Kevin Butler is very funny!!

  • Don’t make the title say, “It Only Does Blu-ray movies” cause it makes it sound like the ps3 ONLY does blu-ray movies. How about It Only Does Everything Including Blu-ray movies.

  • Lmao hilarious ad!

  • @145 no people associated with sony except the home team read the forums and then respond. it’s now getting to where the hcm’s never post news on anything for 3 or more days after something happened. there needs to be more communication between sony and it’s customers. i could care less about xgc but some people want it bad. just saying.

  • With a stick.

  • I enjoy these commercials! good advertising sony!

  • I love this hilarious ads. Keep up the good work.

  • @50 if they did it in europe they would really need a someone like Eddie Izzard being really dry about it.

u know what your grandma did for fun? she went and saw star wars in a cinema, in a cinema!

  • I love these commercials.

  • Good commercial, these next couple years are very critical for ps3, I want you guys at Sony to be aggressive but not obnoxious, just lay out the good facts cause there’s plenty! Hell why not throw in failure rate in an AD, the Box is terrible build unlike the ps3’s.

  • finally,a funny one.

  • lmao i love this spot

  • LOL, my god this ad is the best I’ve seen about playstation 3 so far!!! Use it non-stop on TV, lol. =D

    “A STICK!”

  • Great commercials Sony, keep up the good work.

  • Grandma is plastic, the camera shots with the boy are shaky. Giving the feeling of more than a one on one conversation. The left and right, back and forth discussion with lack of focal point. Is more likely to give someone a headache than sell a PS3. Good content though. Lacks TV Ad magic.

  • I Love the one with the guy that hasn’t connected his PS3 to the internet yet… COME ON!!!!

  • Love it!

Keep it up Sony, This is the kind of marketing you should have done at launch! I’ve seen alot of commercials all over the place and this I believe is my favorite so far.

I know you didn’t ask, but my least favorite is the Ratchet and Clank one…you should go back to the old Rachet and Clank weapons commercial, with the real life kids trying out the weapons, those were great!

  • so when are yous fixing the sync problem introduced by FW 3.10?

  • I wish this was advertised in Australia :(

  • The PSN one, where he’s like “C’MON!” or the old one for MLB 09 The Show.

  • This..was hilarious. This is my new favorite spot by far. The same wit with just a splash of silly humor. You guys really own when it comes to the commercials. I still DESPISE the “Montage” spot only because I still feels like it was such a waste to not use ONLY PS3 exclusives. You can’t have a montage of games they can play on other systems. You guys should have used games like inFamous, R&C, Gran Turismo, Resistance, Killzone, Uncharted, etc. The games that MAKE people want PS3s that much more!
But anyway, this had me in tears. I love it. Lol keep them coming. :)

  • My favorites are the unsatisfied girlfriend, family fun and uncharted 2 commercials. The man that is in all of them is great, keep giving him work.

Also want to mention that I just recently got a Sony 40 inch LCD tv to go with my PS3 and now I can’t stop wanting to watch Blu-ray movies!

  • LOLZ.

    With a STICK!

    Great job Sony.
    RESPECT!

  • love these ones! always good commercials from sony, like the psp ones “like a nut you can play with outside” sweet!

  • Keep it up SONY, this marketing campaign is gold. lol

    Kudos to your advertising team

    loving it

  • To #24 :

    Use TVersity.

  • Awesome commercial, they’re all good.
