This Week in PlayStation Home: New Red Bull Space + Event, Fight Night Producer Chat & More

50 2

Mark your calendars – this Thursday, November 26th, the next phase of the wildly popular Red Bull Island will be released in PlayStation Home. To complement the existing Red Bull Air Race World Championship mini-game, Red Bull will unleash two brand new spaces that will appeal to sports fans and beach bunnies alike. The first, an exhibition of action and adventure sports photographs from Red Bull Illume. The winning photograph from each of the competition’s ten categories is displayed on large illuminate cubes, imitating the real-life exhibit. The second is a Red Bull Flugtag mini-game where users can compete against one another by launching one of five wild flying machines off of a 30-foot high deck in hopes of achieving flight. Think: The Wright Brothers… or that time you and your genius buddies decided to pile into your wagon and take a ride off the roof. He who flies the farthest wins the high spot on the space’s leaderboard. And he that visits these new spaces (and the Theater) to learn more about the art of Red Bull Flugtag during opening week may just win a PSPgo or Rock Band PSP3000 bundle. Want to learn more? Sure you do!

Starting Monday, November 30th at 6:00pm PT (9:00pm EST), behind the scenes videos of the real-life Red Bull Flugtag events will be placed in the PlayStation Home 10-Screen Theater, along with various trivia questions. The first 5 users that email HomeContests@playstation.sony.com with the correct answers will win the aforementioned PSPgo or Rock Band PSP3000 bundles. Check out the official rules and regulations appended to this post for more details.

RedBull2 RedBull1

The Red Bull Flugtag event isn’t the only event going on in PlayStation Home this Thanksgiving week (and no, we’re not talking about chasing turkeys around Central Plaza – that would be preposterous!) EA SPORTS Fight Night Round 4 producers Mike Mahar and Brian Hayes will be in-world this Wednesday, November 25th, between the hours of 4:00pm and 5:00pm PT (7:00pm and 8:00pm EST), for a live chat with you, the PlayStation Home community. The focus of this chat will be on the next title update and all-new Fight Night downloadable content, to be released this December. Rabid boxing fans will not want to miss out on this unique opportunity to get the scoop from the men behind one of the biggest boxing titles of all time. Mahar and Hayes will be in one instance of the EA SPORTS Club Fight Night game space, so be sure to add the host PSN ID that will be announced in Wednesday’s Message of the Day if you want to participate. At the time of the event, simply use the “Go To” feature to travel to the event instance (you can find the “Go To” option in your Menu Pad; simply select the Friends List and the name of the host account).

Fight Night Round 4

We have a real treat in store for all of you music fans. Come Thursday, vignettes from Kyocera’s All Access documentary of the Virgin Mobile Freefest will be airing in the PlayStation Home 10-Screen Theater. This behind-the-scenes rock documentary was created by 14 high school and college students and features exclusive footage of some of the hottest acts of our time including Weezer, Franz Ferdinand, Public Enemy, Blink-182, Taking Back Sunday and more! Come backstage and witness how one of the summer’s most anticipated concert events came to be.

Last, but certainly not least, those full Ezio costumes that you all have been chomping at the bit for will appear in the PlayStation Home Mall this week. Be sure to pick these costumes up and show the world how much of an Assassin’s Creed fanboy/fangirl you are.

  • Yes! That Ezio costume will be mine! i think. not sure if i have the funds.

  • Hell yeah Im down for the Ezio costume!

  • Hurrah for more SCEA contests not open to Canadians (even though SCEA is responsible for Canada too).

Other than that…nice to see HOME expanding…

Is there any technical way that the transition times between spaces will EVER be eliminated or sped up…that is my biggest gripe about home (that and lack of voice chat).

    Cheers.

  • Again US only… I used to think that the people complaining about this are as annoying as it beeing US only.
But now I’m getting annoyed myself and complaining for the first time about this…

Yes.. it has come this far !! :P

  • OMG i hope i win a 3000

I was just browsing online for one last night.. lol

  • It’s impressive to see the rate of Home’s growth. Nice contest incentives, too.

  • I really have to say I’m truly impressed with the way PlayStation Home has progressed and improved over the past year. I remember when I first entered the closed beta and there wasn’t much going on. Now between the new game spaces, community events and new promotions/contests which seem to be running each week, the slogan of “It Only Does Everything” and PlayStation Home goes hand to hand. Keep up the good work!!

  • Hurray! More contest cater to the U.S. user only and once again folks like me in Canada is not able to enter it! **grumble grumble** -___- Otherwise certainly HOME is expanding and can’t wait for the Ezio costume this Thursday!

  • yesss. fight night devs. im abe there and give em a ear ful
    of ideas and fighters

  • Will home ever be fixed so I will not have to download Each space every week. Also please bring Ingame music to home please. And what happend to the camera I can’t find it any more?

  • It’s fun to see home expending.

    But…

I’m tried of all that crap not available in canada.

    Contests? N/A in Canada
Uncharted Eye of Indra? N/A in Canada
    Video store? N/A in Canada
When Rag Doll Kong Fu was free? N/A in Canada

Tell me, why does playstation only does everything only in the US?

    • While I cannot comment on all of the above instances where Canadian users were unfortunately precluded from participating, as far as PlayStation Home contests go, the reason is simple (and complex). There is great legal disparity between the two countries regarding contests and sweepstakes (such as Canadian law dictating that winners be subjected to a skill-test – generally math-based – in order to claim prizes, or Quebec laws dictating that we, the sponsor, must pay the government 10% of the retail value of any prize we wish to give away, and so on). Nobody is more upset about not being able to allow our Canadian community members to participate in certain promotions than we are – though we recognize that it is a small consolation. We do make every effort to include Canadian residents in our events, but at the end of the day we are bound by international laws and have no power or influence to change these laws.

  • Thanks Locust,

    Update is alright.
    AC2 costumes cant wait.

Do you know when we’ll be getting the hovercraft, shrinking cake, etc?

  • only thing that looks good is the AC2 costumes and people still cant get on home is there a fix for that? or just content every week

    • Our development teams are constantly working to optimize the platform and provide the best user experience possible. That said, it should be noted that the people who build many of the spaces, such as the Red Bull space, and execute the events (we on the Community Management team) are not the same people that are devoted to working on the core Home client. So, to your question(s), the answer is yes – the core development team will continue to work diligently to optimize the platform, other development teams will continue to create as much compelling content as possible to release on the platform, and we on the community management team will continue to offer daily, weekly, and monthly events for the community to enjoy.

  • YAY! ADVERTISING! Thanks, Sony!

  • Looks nice. Home is great and all, but the load times deter me still.

  • I’m just curious with these laws preventing contests from reaching Canada. How are other developers such as Naughty Dog and Media Molecule able to bypass these laws in order to award us with prizes? I know Media Molecule previously excluded Canada from their contests but recently, we’ve been added to them. Naughty Dog was kind enough to give us a chance to win the Fortune Hunter edition as well. Do they have to pay this 10% fee or did they somehow find a way to offer us these prizes by legitimate means? Why can’t Home, or any other Sony department for that matter, follow what these are doing to reach the Canadian audience?

  • @ Locust_Star’s reply in #11

While I don’t entirely agree with your reply to the posters question regarding the lack of Canadian support for SCEA contests, I do applaud your response.

I truly believe that something as simple as your acknowledgement here on the blog in a small way takes the sting out of our complaints.

    Thanx!

  • …went into Home the other day to show a non-PS3 friend what HOME was all about, and ended up sitting their red-faced as every little section loaded.

Stunning how much time is wasted in Home just watching a loading screen.

  • …and yah, I can see how adding a simple skill testing question to a contest would be far too difficult.

  • Too bad Playstation HOME is complete crap, now.

  • Damn you SONY! I wanted to participate that event (Red Bull), but I cannot because I will never understand what they are saying when watching and to answer the questions. I REALLY WANTED TO PARTICIPATE BUT HOW???? Please don’t give me a crap about “We are looking into that”. Now, I believe that every opportunity that I might wanted to undertake in the near future will be inaccessible. Thank you, Sony. Really.

  • Wow, poor Canada, some laws are a pain in the rear. Although the laws that Locust mentioned don’t really seem like very huge hurdles For Sony to get past, I believe he was just stating those two as examples, I’m pretty sure there are more so try not to be too hard on em.

  • decent update

  • @ 17 what? LOL sound like to me it’s a canadian government problem not a sony problem maybe you and others need to talk to your government .

  • Hi, there are a couple things I’d like to say.
First, the fact that Home is still in “beta” bothers me, I mean, I remember watching videos forever ago saying we can get T.V.’s, tons of houses, and most of all, a trophy room. I have heard nothing on these, and honestly I am just wondering when maybe things will start getting out there?

  • Hells yes on the AC2 costume. I bought the hoody & egyptian bottom to just ‘kinda’ look like AC2. I will buy the costume! Been playing AC2 with all my freetime since the preorder party.

  • @ Locust_Star

Your reply to No. 11 is the kind of reply everyone should give here in the blog. I really appreciate when Jeff, Chris, devs, or everyone that post in the blog that takes time to answer fans’ questions in an informed manner, and gives the complete reason instead of dodging the questions and/or ignoring them.

I really thank you to take you time to read the comments..

P.S. I wish everyone was like this, especially the people working at firmware updates (they really ignore EVERY requests fans make)

  • I used to get on Home quite a bit. I haven’t been back on for months (sorry – the thing that was keeping me on were friends there, but they all stopped going so I don’t have a reason to go anymore). I’ll go back once there’s a trophy room, or a watchable TV – something like that.

  • Nice update Locust, that Ezio costume is as good as mine!!! :D

  • Thanks locust for the response. I understand those things, yet I’m still a bit peeved. Like Eye of Indra, we got the free issue, but we’re not sure to have the rest, which is quite annoying.

And for the Video store, I know about % of canadian content and french content too.
The laws, I agree, are badly organised.

What is bothering me is the upcoming premium PSN. If it is like right now, I don’t suppose any canadian will suscribe, since most of the services you could provide aren’t available… I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

Harper flashed his dumb smile when talking about globalization, yet is doing nothing to open the markets to the new technologies.

Thanks again, I appreciate your response. More than the silence from everyone else.

  • Just curious, but does the Turkey mini-game in Central Plaza tend to freeze for a good long while before each new turkey?

  • @locust star…

I’m sorry but blaming Canadian law is not good enough.

I paid the same for my PS3 as any U.S. user did. You, SCEA, are responsible for BOTH countries. Treat us equally. I don’t really care that it is more work for SCEA…you’ve CHOSEN to do business in Canada because you think it is profitable…so treat your customers properly.

  • THIS i have absolutely been waiting for – FINALLY! i can get my geek on! i want florins!

  • Looks pretty swell :)

  • @32 KSPRAYDAD
    I agree.

  • Nobody cares about this Home stuff. When the ****ing **** are we going to get some new avatars?

  • Finally new spaces, Its been awhile since a new public space

  • @37 it’s not a new space. it’s a reconditioned space because no one went there anymore.

plus when is ea going to let us, start boxing locust? it sucks when spaces get half finished and left, to die.

  • still need more user friendly option..xmb music, party chat(skype????), trophy room, avatars?

  • Thanks for makin the EA visit so early. Thats the third time I missed out on a visit. The first one, yah didn’t even come our server. Much appreciated.

  • i tryed addinf them but they was ull. t would much better if yall used the gamer louge fr this type of events, but ty having them

  • @LocustStar: I applaud your response on the CAN neglect,FINALLY SOMEONE DID!
Unfortunately I must agree with posts here,I doubt those laws that you’ve listed are really as big of a hurdle as indicated. It’s doubtful that SCEA is unable to get passed them, especially when considering the consumer anger caused & ultimately costing more than jumping said hurdles would.
Can’t put a price on loyalty.
Having said that,if every blog employee would stop avoiding issues & follow your example,(Actually replying regardless of what’s said) then perhaps it may alleviate at least some frustration for a time. Sometimes we just need to know that our comments are taken seriously, regardless if actually taken as such. Making the decision/effort to compose a response, truly does matter.
Anyway,I’ve said my peace, though in the future if SONY truly wants to keep the loyalty of their customers, I suggest they “Find a way”. People won’t wait forever, they need to feel secure in their purchases.
Isolating is a sure way to detour $. Not a smart move imo
    Just sayin’
& for god sake, add a blog edit button & an easy way to find our previous posts/replies.
Jeesh, perhaps you should offer me a job.
    Wait,never mind I’m Canadian.

  • If you are a Canadian as I am, write your (MP) Member of Parliament and complain about our laws, you can also write the (CRTC) Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission… And if you want more events/contests for Canadians you can leave a suggestion/comment here.. feedback_canada@playstation.sony.com

Oh and Happy Thanksgiving you yankees!! :)

  • In response to cydx in #13.
You know a time frame of a fix for these log in issues would be nice. You (cydx)and the entire home team have involvment in home. The only vocal ones for home are u!All this new stuff and no fix seems to me you all want the money from those who can log in and to heck with the rest! I love home but am gettin so aggrevated that im about to say heck with it like alot of other people!

  • its too bad I deleted Playstation home because I was sick of the slow load times and the boring people always asking the same questions, Where are you from? How old are you? I think its probably a good place for pre teen people because they think they are actually making friends. but online friends are nothing to me, I need real friends that I can do real stuff with, chatting is kinda boring

  • Why can’t we get a 3D store preview of the Ezio costume? Bundles apparently can’t be previewed, and this costume is only available as a bundle.

  • i just got 4 words for this update
    best home update yet

  • love this update

  • @43…

You know what. Canada shouldn’t have to change its laws to be the same as those in the States. SCEA should realize that if they are going to sell their product in Canada that they will need to deal with differences in the country. I’ve been a long time advocate of PS products until this year due to the lack of effort and response shown by such people as Grace when it comes to addressing Canadian PS3 owners. Canadian PS3 owners that paid the same as their US counterparts for the hardware on Canadian owners that SCEA is responsible for.

  • Has the PlayStation Home team considered collaborating with the great minds at Cyan to bring us a Myst Online:Uru Live Space or perhaps an alternate reality game similar to Xi.
