Announcing the Gran Turismo 5 Time Trial Challenge

105 5

Hello, PlayStation Blog readers. Winter is fast approaching, but I’m excited to announce something that should fire you up and get you excited about what the new year holds: namely, Gran Turismo 5!

Starting December 17, PlayStation 3 users will be able to download the Gran Turismo 5 Time Trial Challenge from the PlayStation Store for a chance to win. Everyone who downloads it will get a chance to try out Gran Turismo 5’s brand-new physics engine by test driving the new Nissan 370Z on the road to winning an exciting grand prize package that would drive any GT fan wild.

The Gran Turismo 5 Time Trial Challenge features both a stock and a tuned version of the new Nissan 370Z, and includes two time trial events on a single track, one for each version of the car. Both cars drive and handle differently, each providing a unique challenge for newcomers to the GT series and long-time fans alike. And you’ll have to master both to have a chance at winning, because the grand prize will go to the player with the best combined time for both the stock and tuned Time Trial events.

What does being the best of the best earn you? The winner will receive round trip airfare and hotel accommodations for two (winner and guest) to attend the Indianapolis 500 Mile Race, a.k.a. the Indy 500, on May 30, 2010. It doesn’t end there, because the winner and guest also get a VIP package which includes two (2) all-access passes for Carb Day – which includes the final Indy 500 practice, pit stop competition, special concert festivities, special event car rides in the 2010 Indy 500 event vehicle, as well as all-access passes to the garage, pit area, and Victory Lane for pre- and post-race celebrations for the race and two (2) VIP suite tickets to enjoy the race. This is the experience of a lifetime for true racing fans.

The contest is open to US and Canada residents, with an independent contest for each country. That means that there will actually be two grand prize winners: one for the US and one for Canada. And I’m sure there will be some friendly rivalry to see which country has the fastest racers, in true Gran Turismo spirit. You just have to be 18 years old or older to win because much of the cool VIP experience the winner will be treated to require the participants to be 18 for safety reasons.

In the event of a tie of combined Time Trial lap times, the player with the fastest stock non-tuned Time Trial lap will be deemed the winner. In addition, five runner-ups in the US and five in Canada will receive a voucher to download Gran Turismo for PSP.

You’ll have plenty of time to study Gran Turismo 5 and go for your best possible time, because the Gran Turismo 5 Time Trial Challenge will run through 5PM PST on January 25, 2010. After January 25 you won’t be able to download the game from PSN, but those who already have it will be able to continue to play it past the contest end date. Click here for official rules for the US.

So mark December 17 on your calendar for your chance to test your driving skills in the Gran Turismo 5 Time Trial Challenge. Don’t forget to look for more Gran Turismo 5 exciting news in the coming weeks and months on the newly re-designed official Gran Turismo website.

  • Read this earlier this morning on another site…very interesting contest.

  • cool screenshots!

  • LOL to bad I live in Indy :) GO COLTS 11-0

  • Any news if the save data from Prologue can be transfered to the final product, when it comes out?

  • “US and Canada residents”

    YES!

I haven’t had a Gran Turismo fix in years, and this might reinvigorate my love for GT.

PS: The links to the Canadian rules are 404’d.

  • Screen shots don’t show anymore please fix.

  • Finally – some solid progress toward the real racing game!

The PS Store has been loaded with kiddie junk for quite a while – this is something to look forward to.

  • Pictures don’t show up.
    “This photo is currently unavailable.”

  • I just want to thank you for finally including Canada, better late than never.

As a big GT fan I look forward to trying out the new physics of GT5.

    Thanks again,
    A Happy Canadian

You\’re welcome Jimmy! We wanted to make sure Canada was well represented. It will be interesting to compare the US and Canada top scores.

  • Cool contest. I’m sure I won’t be anywhere near the top.. I need to get a wheel for my ps3 now that GT5 is getting near.

  • I am not even a sim racing fan, but I will be getting GT5 just to show my support for a great developers.

  • YES!!!! GT5 FTW!!!!!

  • “The contest is open to US and Canada residents”

    Arghhh T_______T

Why is always US and Canada? You know, Sony has officially released Playstation consoles in a LOT of other countries..
    This isn’t fair.

  • This may be the coolest way to do a the PSN has had yet.

  • Pretty awesome contest. No chance in me winning but it’ll be nice to play.

  • @RaphaelDDL2, because this is the SCEA blog ;)

  • Awesome!

To the community: which racing wheel would you recommend to better experience GT5? Please note that price is a factor. Thanks!

  • Wow, both US and Canada! I was expecting it to be only available in EU.

  • Thank-you for letting Canada in on this one as well Stephanie !

I understand there are legal issues and that’s why Canada isn’t normally included in the US contests, but to make one for the US and another for Canada is just outstanding.

    Keep up the great work.

  • Great contest, gran turismo is one of the few racing games i like.

  • Hmmm, hopefully I get a decent time. I doubt I will though. I’m more of a racer than a qualifier. On prologue I literally won 3 out of every 4 races I ran…….that was until I got sick of the bare bones online with no mic support and no making your own races and inviting friends….. but on time trials I was lucky to break into the top 15-20. We’ll see how well I do, but I’m not expecting much. If I’m REALLY lucky maybe I’ll be able to get a copy of GT PSP, for my Go that I’m getting right after Christmas.

I’m more looking forward to just checking out the new physics for Gran Turismo. I got really excited when I heard you guys rebuilt the physics from the ground up.

I have a question hopefully you’ll be kind enough to answer. I’m a huge NASCAR fan, and I’m curious how the NASCAR part of the game is coming. Specifically what NASCAR tracks are going to be in the game. I’m hoping Watkin’s Glen, Sanoma, Pheonix, Richmond, Bristol, Martinsville, Pocono, Indy, Atlanta and Darlington.

Also….. any official word on rain? Aside from NASCAR, rain is actually my most wanted feature. It’s pretty much just eye candy on top of the wet track physics, but that’s eye candy I REALLY want.

    • Stephanie Yoshimoto

You ask some great questions. I won\’t be able to answer them just yet, but look forward more information to come in the near future.

  • @RaphaelDDL2 sorry that it is only US/Canada, but that isn’t normal…it is usually just a US contest and doesn’t usually include Canada, but I am happy to finally see another contest that includes canada

Thank you very much….seeing as it is my daughter’s first birthday on the 17th she will bring me luck!

  • Cool…except I won’t be able to try this anytime soon since my 60gb PS3 got the “blinking red light of death” this morning…

  • i love contests like this. psn should really have more!

though with that said i doubt ill win but ill try not to enjoy losing too much.

  • @Glacier928 to fix the “blinking red light of death” you either have to adjust the hard drive or if that doesnt work you’ll just have to buy a new one.
and i cant wait to play GT5. havent played one since the third one. :D

  • Sony We all know that Guys don’t want to go check out the race they just Want to check out Danica Patric. Swimsuit issue was Sweet :)

  • Those Flickr placeholder images are BEAUTIFUL!

  • sounds like fun!

  • Can’t wait!

  • @RaphaelDDL2

The Indy 500 contest is just US and Canada, but Europe gets a GT Academy contest. If anything, the US and Canada are getting the lesser prize.

    @Andrefpvs

I use a Logitech Driving Force Pro, which can be bought for under $100 now, and the newer Driving Force GT is around $100 in some places and was designed with Polyphony Digital specifically for Gran Turismo. More expensive wheels are Logitech’s G25 and G27 models which have a clutch and H-shifter, but are expensive, and they are comparable to the Fanatec wheels.

If you want more details GTPlanet.net has an entire section devoted to steering wheel and racing cockpits in the forums.

  • Simply…awesome. Great news and thank you!
    Can’t wait to start practicing!

Man i wish your team would make a Moto GP game in GT style…with a contest like this to a Moto GP event!

  • Stephanie. You are my hero. First, a contest for Canucks, and now you’re here in the blog, answering questions! Thanks for confirming the car transfers.

You’re my Christmas gift come early… no really, check it out:
    http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board/message?board.id=granturismo&view=by_date_ascending&message.id=436325#M436325

Swing by the forums some time. Iz fun!

  • Best news I’ve heard all day, thanks for the demo and opportunity at awesome prizes!

  • Is that transfer going to be limited, if so how much… or will it be everything!?

  • I don’t care about Nascar so that Grand Prie doesn’t interest me. But I already feel like a Grand Prize winner by getting to try GT5.

  • So… I’ll be 18 before May 30th. But I’m 17 right now. I assume that means I’m still not eligible. :(

  • @37,

    The Indy 500 isn’t NASCAR. It’s open-wheel, open-cockpit Formula 1 cars.

    http://www.indy500.com/

  • Awsome!!!!!!!! Can’t Wait!!!!!!! :P

  • Ugh, Indy 500 really? I would like to win an exotic I’ll never be able to earn.

Too bad, now I won’t bother trying. :(

  • A Little off topic, but, i need help, my psp go isn’t linking to online games, and the psp shop, it has some stupid error, and i can’t do anything now D:

  • please have Kaz make sure that i can assign my gas and break pedals to the Formular 1 Shifters Paddles on the GT% Steering Wheel because i have theLogitech MOMO wheel andi cannot use it do to not being able to switvh my gas and break to the wheel and i tried contacting SCEA & Polyphony Digital and never got replies except for ”Im not sure, call the Developer. :( Thanks. Ive sim raced for years and love this game because this is what startedit for me… still my my U3 PS with GT. Please Include MOMO Wheel Drivers or Assignable peddles to the F! Shifters.. thanks. Phil aka polo155

  • This is stupid. The EU event sends you to Dubai 2010 and is shown on TV…the US gets crap-tastic Indy.

Way to mess this up Sony. Why the hell can’t America get the same prize as the EU contest?

  • Anything Gran Turismo is AWESOME! But this is extra special. Thankyou.

  • Thank you so much.
My dad, brother, and I are all avid GT fans. If there is a midnight release for GT5 at my local GameStop, I’ll be there the day before. I can not wait for this game, but I don’t want to rush Polyphony Digital, so I can wait until Spring.
    Thanks again
