PS3 3.15 System Software Update

423 0

Hi everyone, PlayStation 3 (PS3) will receive its next system software update shortly – v. 3.15. This is an optional update, and it enables existing PS3 owners who purchase a new PS3 system (perhaps as a second unit for the household) to transfer their content from their current PS3 to the new system. Content such as games, game save data, and videos downloaded from PlayStation Network can be transferred to the new PS3 system and deleted from the current PS3 system. Other content, including personal media files (photos, music, videos), can be copied onto the new PS3 and remain on the current PS3 system.

Here’s a quick primer on how the Data Transfer Utility works (UPDATED).

Data Transfer Utility

  1. Connect both PS3 (A) and PS3 (B) with a LAN cable and connect both PS3 to the TV (using different video input connectors). (Please note, do not unplug any cables when the PS3 power is on.) Turn both the current PS3 (A) and new PS3 (B) on. Please note, firmware (v3.15) must be installed on both systems.
  2. On the XMB of PS3 (A), scroll to the Settings category and select [System Settings] and then [Data Transfer Utility]
  3. Follow the instructions on-screen and select [1. Transfer data from this system to the other PS3 system.]
  4. When PS3 (A) is in standby and ready for transferring data, switch the screen to PS3 (B), scroll to the Settings category on XMB and select [System Settings] and then [Data Transfer Utility]
  5. Follow the instructions on-screen and select [2. Transfer from the other PS3 system to this system.]
  6. After transferring the data, follow the instructions on-screen.
  7. If content that was downloaded from PlayStation Store was transferred as part of this operation, you must activate PS3 (B) before you can use the data. Log in to the PS3 system as the user who owns the content, and then select (PlayStation Network) > (Account Management) > (System Activation) to activate the system.

More details on Data Transfer Utility will be available here once the firmware update is live.

minis

The 3.15 update also enables “minis” to be played on a PS3 system. As we’ve reported here before, “minis” launched on PlayStation Network this fall in conjunction with the launch of PSPgo. These bite-sized games offer a more casual experience and are ideal for shorter gameplay sessions. Now PS3 owners will be able to play “minis,” and those who own both a PS3 and PSP system will be able to play on either platform. “minis” for the PS3 system will be available for download on PlayStation Store in the coming weeks. If you’ve purchased any “minis” already for your PSP and the title becomes available for PS3, you’ll simply need to download the title to your PS3.

As always, we look forward to your feedback.

  • Nice little update. This will come in handy when i get my ps3 for Christmas so i can transfer my data from my cousins PS3 to mine.

  • In-game music and cross game chat… Still waiting… .. . .. . …………

    Any day now…?

  • kwel! haha, was gonna buy a asia version white ps3 slim + ff13 bundle on the 17, perfect timing i can transfer my data the same day!! :)

  • An awesome update would be the availability of having auto shutdown when all your downloads in your download management finish. That way when I download alot of stuff and leave it on overnight, I don’t have to leave it on doing nothing if it finishes earlier than expected.

  • will this give us the option to remote play w/ the minis, since we can’t with any other games… what i mean is can we save the games to the hard drive then play them on the psp

  • Protected game saves should be linked to a PSN account not the system. Multiple PSN ID should be able to log in at the same time and you could tie them to users.

  • Useless…we need a better update,private chat,voice voice message, custom soundtrack in all games,ps2 backwards compatibility,etc….

  • I don’t know if it’s a large scale problem but since the last update, I’m not able to sync my profile, it gets stuck at 10%. Maybe this problem is related to something else, but I hope it gets fixed soon.

  • You have GOT to be kidding me. I JUST this past weekend migrated my files from old PS3 to new Slim. By the way the most difficult part was having to select each individual save file and copy it. Hope this update allows copying of everything at once. The reason I got a SLIM is cause my old PS3 is YLODing and I’ve been able to use the DIY heat-gun-reflow technique but it only works for 2 weeks or so and then YLOD again…

  • So does that mean we can’t tranfer data the old fashion way by just signing on with the username of the user that owns the content?

  • Hey Sony, I’m getting pissed off there aren’t any new avatars.

Sounds pretty simple to add some pictures as avatars.

I can’t even imagine Sony’s excuse for the lack of new avatars after 3 years.

  • cross game voice chat?

  • thnx for the update!

  • I know there is alot of whining about cross-game chat. A feature I wish to see in the future myself.

One thing I want to see myself big time is the ability to use a FAT32 formated external hard drives. Windows formats anything greater then 2GB in FAT32 and I have my old 40GB hard drive from before I updated to a 500GB I would love to be able to use.

Still, I wanna say…very good job Sony, this is why I support you in all your products. Now just create a wifi attachment to use Bravia Widgets and Bravia Internet Video that is integrated in the KDL-46Z5100 and I will be set, lol.

  • Will we get Internet radio in the future like the psp? Man I would love that feature.

  • Hmm great news. Finnaly I can buy a PS3 slim 120 gig and buy the 500gig 7200 RPM HDD!

  • hmm…if they can do this for mini’s..they can easily do this for PSP games…why not jus allow PSP games to be played on PS3 as well..?? i swear, the market for PSP games would SKYROCKET if they manage to pull that off.

  • im asuming this will support gigabit ethernet right? so if i have games like siren which are like 9070 mb i dont have to wait long to transfer them?

i could care less about any other stuff really like themes and all that crap .. i dont spend enough time lookin at the player card to care what my avatar is .. i did however get the r&c dynamic them though i’d like more from other titles like kz2, unch2, AC2 maybe

    nice feature though

  • Mr. Lempel,

You folks always seem to have a flood of ‘this is useless without (feature here)’ posts, so I just wanted to add to the ‘kudos’ pile saying good work.

I think you guys have done great things updating the features in my PS3 since I bought my first in August 07. the day I brought it home, you folks added the DLNA functionality, and since then I’ve seen DivX support, trophies, in game messaging, BD-Live support and more.

But this update does leave me with a question.

If Sony has chosen to restrict this utility to 2 PS3’s that are connected *directly* and not via the WiFi or Router, then why does it not move Copy Protected saves?

All the other saves can be copied a lot easier on a flash drive from one PS3 to the other, it’s the protected saves that needed a utility guys! Seeing hard-earned progress in certain games (Fat Princess!) disappear after moving to a new unit sucks.

Time to introduce SonySync, and allow us to Sync protected saves to PSN servers ala trophies, so that we don’t lose them.

  • We want PSN Avatars!!!

  • when are yall going to add the ability to play our music in a game

  • OK this is cool I guess. So you have a PS3 and your buddy has to bring his over to transfer data mmmmmm. And PS3 to PSP well I guess if you own a PSP. Were the heck is cross chat again they are holding off for the payed service. Come on sony I know your smarter then that.

  • Will the primary PSN account be transferred over? I don’t want to have to make a new PSN should I ever have to buy another PS3

  • Pretty pointless if your PS3(A) is broken and you got a brand new PS3(B). And it’s my turn I guess to get that YLOD, I’ve been running my first generation of PS3 just fine until a few days ago. Sigh.

  • ZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzz……,

  • Looks interesting, but how about fixing trophy syncing? I haven’t been able to check my totals for weeks =(

  • Stoked!

I’m updating as soon as I can.

    http://www.newdgamez.com

  • It’s nice to see the Data Transfer utility for those getting more than one PS3. The problem is that doesn’t work when you’re replacing a broken PS3. When mine broke, all my data was lost even though the hard drive was intact, and I really wished there was a way to retrieve it.

  • I am still waiting for the Cross Gaming Voice chat feature.. That will really make PS3 on Par with xbox 360 live voice chat features..

    Please be in this update!!!!!

  • avatars. skype. trophies.

seriously…just do this already sony. quit ignoring us loyal $600 ps3 owners. iv been buying your stuff an haven’t gotten main features this system needs to compete with 360

    “It only does somethings”

  • And we will be getting the stuff we want when? I mean WOW yeah Cheap facebook and netflix add on really pushed you guys to the top of the list..! When is Sony going to try?!

  • Where’s the in-game voice chat? :/

  • Too bad my ps3 is uptairs and don’t have a LAN cable that’ll reach. Suggestion: make game saves tranferrable by wifi, or be able to sync them to a server like trophies. That way when I’m playing downstairs, I can go upstairs anytime and resume my game where I left off

  • Animated avatars.

  • I would like to know if it’s possible to apply for a position. Perhaps as the employee responsible for ideas / idea integration decisions.
Seriously, I am fully capable of becoming the go to individual.

I’m sure many have asked for this honor, however; I believe my specific skill set would truly enrich the quality of the software / consumer satisfaction.

I do have the education to back-up my technological talents…but believe I would really excel in the “ideas” department.

What are the odds of receiving a chance to prove ones self I wonder.

I have tried all the conventional methods of job application, but clearly another way of wedging my foot into the door is needed, as I cannot find the department I’m interested in (if it’s even something you CAN apply for).
    Any ideas on the matter?
Help or even a chance would be much appreciated.
    Thanks.

  • Soooo many things could be added to improve the systems…Just wish I could be a part of that…
just like everyone else here I’m sure…
    Ah, well…fingers are crossed…

  • Cross Game Voice Chat and your promised Avatars are still lacking.

  • Wow this is great news for me! I’m getting a slim for xmas and giving my girlfriend my fat PS3. I was going to be very sad to have to start Demon’s Souls over because the file is locked.

  • My comments aren’t working.

  • I hope that “80022A07″ will be fix.. ;)

  • Very nice(and FREE – yes, you dumb haters and trolls, it’s FREE) update!

I can’t wait to see what other crazy good features Sony will release! Keep up the great work Sony!

  • I don’t have a PS3 (will probably get one in a couple years, if I ever get a HDTV), but as a PSP owner, kudos on the minis thing.

This move will hopefully convince many more developers to take part in the program, as well as reward those who have already with additional sales.

And I don’t see what y’all are complaining about, this being more like 3.11 than 3.15. It adds a good 20 games to your potential library, that’s a pretty big update, and potentially 100s in another year

  • This is a nice update guys! But i have been waiting and waiting for avatars and cross game chat. i seen it on the naughty dog website. It said we was going to get it with the next update. And that’s been like 3 updates ago. Come on sony it can’t be that hard guys. I support you all so much. But these are simple things to add on. I have high hopes for you guys.

  • Dear Mr.Lempel
I would like to address some blue ray drive issues that are present since 3.00 firmware, reflected in the fact of being unable to play uncharted Drake’s fortune for a lot of gamers, so releasing 15 days later a patch for it. A lot of people in ps3 community (you can see this in sony official forums)as seen in this link, are experiencing problems since 3.00 update and up (current count is 451)with detailed explanations of problems in gameplay after the update:
    http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board/message?board.id=ps3updates&thread.id=128902

They are sending FTC and BBB complaints, so I believe this should be noticed and adressed.

So, turn back blue ray drive programation from older firmwares (they say new ones push the laser and disc spin to much causing premature malfunction).

Please I would like this feedback is taken in account.

I know there are a lot of users like me, who loves sony and have all their products (since ps1…even my cellphone is sony! ), so I’m concerned a lot about this.

Thanks a lot for you time.

    Regards:
    LB

  • I agree this copy controlled save thing needs a proper fix, some sort of game save only backup tool in the system software or in a hardware unit. Link the copy controlled saves to PSN ID or a way to upload and download them from a secure PSN server… anything.

As it stands I am scared to start certain games with copy controlled saves(ie demon souls)until I finish other ones ie DAO due to fear of PS3 croaking, its old and been running at higher fan speeds then it used to at same temps for last couple months.

The existing backup tool transferred ALL my copy controlled saves and installs when I upgraded HDD in same PS3 unit, We need a tool or option in existing backup utility to transfer all saves to new PS3 hardware.

IF this new transfer update works with copy protected saves cool, still isnt a good solution due to the fact most people move to new hardware when current PS3 dies. I have been though this once already, losing all my “controlled” saves sucked, I do not want to go through that again.

I’m sure its possible to do many ways just need enough noise for it to move up the firmware development priority list…

  • So much potential with this update.

If one could set it up so that YLoD’d PS3s’ datas can transfer, or if Sony does it at the factory, that would work wonders. People with heavily online games (example: Rock Band 2) would be able to keep going without having to start over.

    So much potential.

  • @170 it is scee which is eu that does the fw updates and home. yes they need to change where it is done.

  • Come on, these aren’t even significant updates. Give us cross-game chat, in-game music, voicemail. Any of those are better than what you guys been putting out. Plus, the friends list looks so ugly now. COME ON SONY! -_- And also, my ps3 slim is having problems syncing with controllers, is it true that one of the firmware updates caused it? Cmonnnnn

  • Is it just ps3 to ps3 or can it be done over a lan? That would be so cool especially if they add an automatic saved game sync over lan! So that whatever I play on my new slim in my bedroom or the old fat in the basement I can just sync my progress.

That would pretty much guarantee that if one of my two ps3 crap out I don’t lose any data! This is a very nice and innovative feature I can’t wait to try it.
