PS3 3.15 System Software Update

423 0

Hi everyone, PlayStation 3 (PS3) will receive its next system software update shortly – v. 3.15. This is an optional update, and it enables existing PS3 owners who purchase a new PS3 system (perhaps as a second unit for the household) to transfer their content from their current PS3 to the new system. Content such as games, game save data, and videos downloaded from PlayStation Network can be transferred to the new PS3 system and deleted from the current PS3 system. Other content, including personal media files (photos, music, videos), can be copied onto the new PS3 and remain on the current PS3 system.

Here’s a quick primer on how the Data Transfer Utility works (UPDATED).

Data Transfer Utility

  1. Connect both PS3 (A) and PS3 (B) with a LAN cable and connect both PS3 to the TV (using different video input connectors). (Please note, do not unplug any cables when the PS3 power is on.) Turn both the current PS3 (A) and new PS3 (B) on. Please note, firmware (v3.15) must be installed on both systems.
  2. On the XMB of PS3 (A), scroll to the Settings category and select [System Settings] and then [Data Transfer Utility]
  3. Follow the instructions on-screen and select [1. Transfer data from this system to the other PS3 system.]
  4. When PS3 (A) is in standby and ready for transferring data, switch the screen to PS3 (B), scroll to the Settings category on XMB and select [System Settings] and then [Data Transfer Utility]
  5. Follow the instructions on-screen and select [2. Transfer from the other PS3 system to this system.]
  6. After transferring the data, follow the instructions on-screen.
  7. If content that was downloaded from PlayStation Store was transferred as part of this operation, you must activate PS3 (B) before you can use the data. Log in to the PS3 system as the user who owns the content, and then select (PlayStation Network) > (Account Management) > (System Activation) to activate the system.

More details on Data Transfer Utility will be available here once the firmware update is live.

minis

The 3.15 update also enables “minis” to be played on a PS3 system. As we’ve reported here before, “minis” launched on PlayStation Network this fall in conjunction with the launch of PSPgo. These bite-sized games offer a more casual experience and are ideal for shorter gameplay sessions. Now PS3 owners will be able to play “minis,” and those who own both a PS3 and PSP system will be able to play on either platform. “minis” for the PS3 system will be available for download on PlayStation Store in the coming weeks. If you’ve purchased any “minis” already for your PSP and the title becomes available for PS3, you’ll simply need to download the title to your PS3.

As always, we look forward to your feedback.

  • Bringing the PSP Minis over is a really good idea. I’ve already got Sudoku and Tetris on PSP and it would be nice to play them on the big screen.

Letting us DL games we’ve already paid for for free… really nice. If only we could DL PS2 games we’ve already paid for too.

I’m still waiting for custom avatars, and a few other things on my wish list.
I’ve made a wishlist poll for PS3 features:

  • @Eric

I think that FW 3.15 have a bug.
After updated my console the new XMB Icon “Saved-Data Utility (Minis) dint’t appear…

    Thanks.

  • Eric I made a more detailed thread topic on fixing the PS2 games scaling issues. Please address this. It’s been too long:

After upgrading and reading the info on the system about the data transfer, it WILL MOVE copy protected saves files to the new system.

“Not ideal as it erases the new system it is copying to but it performs the function of moving copy protected saves.”

Posted by Eric Lempel // Director, PlayStation Network Operations
“Content such as games, game save data, and videos downloaded from PlayStation Network can be transferred to the new PS3 system and deleted from the current PS3 system.”

The two comments enclosed in quotation marks in the two previous posts that I attached lead me to the conclusion that even though one can apparently move a copy protected game save file from one system to another, one only ends up with one copy of this game save, and it will be on the new PS3.

Unless I am missing something here, and if this is actually the case, then this new capability is utterly useless, in my opinion.

  • I like others have a PS3 now where the BlueRay drive doesn’t work, it worked 2 mins before this update now it doesn’t. I wonder if there will be a fix for it, or this is a way for sony to ‘recover’ some lost funds?

    This sux.

  • PS3 (B) is no longer able to stream Netflix for me, when it did before the Data Transfer Utility I used. I get the system error code:
    800299AB.

    – PS3 (A) is still able to stream Netflix.
    – I activated both PS3s with Netflix before the data transfer, and they worked.
    – I deactivated then reactivated both PS3s after the data transfer, and it displays only one PS3 ID in the Netflix device manager.

No one on customer service seems to know how to fix this on both Sony’s and Netflix’s end.

  • I’m never downloading from the PS Store again. I just backed up my hard drive and upgraded. After restoring to the new hard drive, it wouldn’t let me play a game until it was reactivated. I went into Account Management and attempted to reactivate the account and it said it was already active. The ONLY way I was able to play the game that I had backed up was to re-download it, consuming one of the three downloads I get. I for one am not going to invest in any content that I may not permanently own. Now I’ve used up one of my downloads. Hard drives crash and so do PS3s, don’t waist your money on buying from PSN.

  • Like the update. When will there be a update that will allow you to play your music in game or playing in playstaton home

  • Time to fix the trophies guys! You had so long to get them to work like achievements… and when you finally put them out they don’t work.

I don’t want to have to “sync” anything. Achievements don’t “sync” they just work. I’m online and I’ve got the achievement regardless of the console I’m playing on or if I’ve synced anything. Also when I win a trophy, let me hit the Sony button to immediately see what it is I won! I keep reading vague titles when a trophy pops up and pushing the Sony button to read more info only to be greeted with the XMB and about 5 menus to navigate through. At which point I forget what I’m looking for.

I want stat sites! I was just at GiantBomb trying to add my trophies to their achievements (along with Steam, 360 and WoW). I see that due to Sony’s stranglehold on this data… my trophies can’t be listed. Fix this! I want a 360Voice for my PS3!

  • Feedback: Where is the Bluetooth A2DP output?

  • i won’t get this update. will just wait til 4.0 comes…

  • Guys its really cool update, but I am wondering when Linux will come back to ps3?

  • Its a cool update, but when Linux will return to ps3?

  • Cool , But when are we going to get the ability to delete games with 0% of our trophy collection. My friend played a game once on my ps3 and never again. i have 0% of the trophies for that game and want to delete so it doesnt lower my trophy level.

  • ok went and baught tetris minis after 3.15 update and it wont work….. so i called sony to find out why and they said it only works on psp……. what is this s… if only some work they should specify what ones so people like me dont get screwed…. p.s. sony you guys need to pick up your game cause there has bin a lot of screwups lately….. and alot of mistakes………….

  • GO RAZORBACKS!!!! BEAT EAST CAROLINA!!! MALLET FOR HEISMAN 2010!!!

  • You know I’m still waiting for PS2 Backward compat.. like even on disc form where you have to install it would be nice.. and I how about letting us use our own Photos as avatars, that would be pretty nice as well..oh and to always be able to listen to music while I play a game.

  • I am having Freezing issues with Uncharted: Drakes Fortune after updating to 3.15. Other games seems to be ok.

    Another bugged update :(

  • Has anyone installed a larger hard drive in a PS3 Slim after upgrading to 3.15? I am unable to make this work. I installed the new drive and it says “No applicable update data was found. Connect storage media that contains update data of version 3.15 or later, and then press START and SELECT buttons at the same time.” I have a USB stick formatted FAT16 with /PS3/UPDATE/PS3UPDAT.PUP (version 3.15). It just keeps giving that message. I tried formatting the drive elsewhere to FAT32; but still the same problem. Anyone get this to work?

Actually, my girlfriend purchased the Slim 120 gig PS3 this past friday as a Christmas gift for me. She asked me what I wanted and the only thing I could think of was that. Reason being I pay the electric bills at my apartment. The new PS3 uses 40% less power than the original 60GB PS3 that I purchased when it first came out. I had installed a 500GB seagate drive a few months after getting that one. So to me, that means I should theoretically pay less on my bill each month.

I picked up a Western Digital 500GB harddrive and installed it rather easily into the new PS3. I did the transfer between both systems. The process took approximately 6 hours which was kind of a pain. But after following the instructions on sonys ps3 site, everything transferred over flawlessly. I highly recommend the process to anyone interested in making the switch. Thanks Sony!

Now lets get some cross game voice chat and the ability to access my XMB while watching a Bluray or DVD and the PS3 will be perfecto! :)

  • To answer my own comment #371: The download link for 3.15 is incorrect on the Sony website. It actually has you download 3.10, which won’t work on an updated Slim. Use this link for 3.15 (and PLEASE fix this Sony!):

  • major major one, being able to listen to music on the ps3 while playing a game…

  • @yourmama69: This was clearly stated when the firmware was announced that they would release what games where compatible. It was the same as when PS1 games came to ps3… it took a little while for everything to switch over.

  • Dear PlayStation,

Several times, I’ve heard the Create, Play, Share motto. Which there are some games that do exhibit this model in their games, however at this time I’d like to focus on the Create. There are several sports title, or titles in general that have excellent opportunities to allow players to create their own experiences musically in these type of games. Custom Entrance music for Wrestling games, Custom stadium songs for your sports titles, custom songs for racing.
I just want to see a greater effort on Sony’s part to ensure that your partners are providing the best possible experiences for games on the PS3 platform. It pains me to know that the game game different system gets to have custom soundtrack features, whereas only a “small” set of PS3 games make use of the feature. Obviously, every game doesn’t call for custom soundtracks, but for some games I consider it a priority.

In conclusion, my feeback, is more of a request…. more music customization for the games please!

  • We need MKV file support – nothing else!

  • Speaking of Updates I checked the backwards Comapatability thing on the playstation network and I was wondering when exactly is the update for the 120gb console suppose to come out so I can play my PS2games on there. and yes it said it was in production.

  • Alright People, I Need Searious Help!
    Due to this Update
Can i now transfer my trophies from my old ps3 to my new ps3??!
    plzz people reply

  • What would bee kickass is to Listen To your music while you are playing Your Games!!

  • In case anyone is interested, I ran this utility last night. I deactivated my old system from each account (which it prompts you to do btw), ran the data transfer utility, and then activated all the accounts on the new system. Everything worked great.

ALL of my saved game files were located on the new system, including the copy protected ones. Think of it this way: They are “copy protected”, but not “move protected”.

Great job on this one Sony!

  • i’ve updated to 3.15 and bought fieldrunners.. the game won’t work. why?

  • ps. it says the exclusive thing about the PSP

  • Ack… I added this firmware now my SONY Playstation 3 160GB Bundle Model 98038 won’t play blu-ray discs. It will load DVD’s so the drive spins. It’s a firmware issue that makes blu-rays not load properly. Games movies doesn’t matter the blu-ray I put in it.

  • Please Fix your Firmware so I can use my PS3. I bought the most expensive bundle you had a month before your price cut… now I’m even more annoyed.

  • Same ol’ fudged up Sony firmware updates…

I was hoping upon reading these posts, that i’d find some “my playstation’s blu-ray works again” quotes.. but NO. NOW EVEN MORE PS3s are getting bricked.

My blu-ray hasn’t worked since the September 3.00 / 3.01 bricking firmwares… and still i refuse to send away for a refurb ripoff or buy a new console.

Is Sony’s longterm plan to eventually kill off all old models, to encourage purchases of the new slim??

  • Hey, this should be pretty useful for those of us that got a messed up system thanks to 3.01 update! Now all we have to do is go out and buy a new PS3, and we can move all our old data and forget about the old one! (*still pissed*)

  • Where are the premium avatars!?

  • * Hi James I have the original PS3 80GB etc. I’ve been wondering all this time when we would have an update for new visualizations. I’m sure i’m not the only one getting bored wih the one we have & the folding home Earth visual…
Not sure if this is the right section for this comment but i’m new to blogging.
    Cheers Mate :D

  • Another thing that i don’t like is that you can’t view other things such as pictures when listing to music stored on the hard drive. I think this happened since 3.00. Please change it so we can listen to music while looking at pictures and browse the web etc.

  • Hello Eric,

It looks like the PS3 is becoming a great multimedia box but there are some things that really annoys and I´m sorry to use such words but it really does. 1: the web browser is so slow and outdated, I can not check my new Yahoo Mail with it. I really wish that Sony would do something about it. 2: the visualiser of the music section. This sucks big time, the PSone had more attractive visualisers. Hell, even the psp has better ones. Y know what would be a nice idea, that you could download a app that includes daxter dancing on the beats of your own music stored on your hard drive. this would be a nice back ground visualiser. I do like the earth thing, really nice. Oh and why can´t listen to any music when surfing the web or watch my pics any more. I believe it was possible in the past.

I do have a nice idea about the music section, I have lot of music on my hard drive and after a while it is hard to manage it. Maybe for example if I want to copy music to my play list or psp that you can make a preview button for listening to music. I think R1 would be a great preview button. The reason for a preview is very simple, I´m really bad in remembering songs, artist, so a preview button would be great.

    Gtz Jeff

  • I think they make you have to have another PS3 to back up saved data because if it were to be enabled on any type of storage source (external HDD, flash drive, CD/DVD-R etc…), then people would be selling saved game data on ebay like crazy.

People would just buy a cheap 1 gig flash drive, put their rank 70 MW2 save data on it, and sell it on ebay. It would create a huge market of saved game data.

  • Hey Sony! Here’s something that would really be useful. A firmware update that makes Itunes music/Ipods compatible with PS3 so when transfer you music all the album info is display too. Right now Itunes music information doesn’t transfer, so you have to listen to each and every song and try to figure out what it is, the album, track number, etc. Transfering your music collection from an Ipod to PS3 is the fastest way I know. This a no brainer Sony. Make it happen!

  • What about trophies? will they be transfered… not the ones on you Psn Profile they’ll be there but the ones in your trophy collection under “Game” on the XMB.

  • After updating to3.15 I am experiencing problems with my audio. All sound is slightly delayed in video and games. Does anyone else have the same problem? Can I roll-back to 3.10?

  • After updating to3.15 I am experiencing problems with my audio. All sound is slightly delayed in video and games. Does anyone else have the same problem? Can I roll-back to 3.10?

  • Another long-time Sony customer that is shocked and seriously dissapointed.

Immediately after updating my 60gb, I can’t use the optical drive – no Blu-Ray, Games, DVD, PS2 disks, Audio CD, etc. I basically have a $600 useless piece of plastic and a lot of $50 drink coasters. The only solution Sony support will offer is for me to spend $150 and get a refurbished unit that is not compatible with PS2 games, or a $170 repair (it wasn’t broken until Sony broke it!). I hate to do it, and I don’t know what good it will do, but I guess I am forced to file a BBB complaint and time to jump on the on-going lawsuit.

No PS3 games for me for christmas – Sony, you have lost at least as much potential revenue from me as you are trying to squeeze out of me. Please do something to fix this and let me be a fan again!

  • Will the saved data for WWE SmackDown vs RAW 2010 be able to transfer to the new unit? Please reply.

  • Does PS3 A & PSN B have to be identical hardware?? Do both hard drives need to be the same size? Will it work across a Slim & a Classic? With a PC image transfer, the machines have to be identical down to every piece of hardware in it. So I’m curious if the PS3 has the same restriction.

  • Yeah, I have one of the original 60GB units, and it will take someone holding a gun at me to make me give it up. I have entirely too many PS2 games, and those 1st generation units had the original Emotion Engine PS2 chip in them… high power consumption or not, hardware emulation > software emulation.

  • wow this is really awesome!!!! surely helps out alot, because I really wouldnt want to do over everything in my favorite game killzone 2 lol
