PSN Digital Comics Launch Today!

126 5

PLEASE NOTE: Download the Digital Comics Reader application in order to view the comics. You can download the reader via Wi-Fi, directly on the PSP, by going to the Digital Comics reader icon and following the on-screen instructions.

Hi Everyone, PlayStation Network launched a new digital comics service for the PSP system today. As you already know, PSP firmware update v6.20 included a Digital Comics reader application that is accessible under the Extras icon on the XMB. Starting today, you can access hundreds of digital comics on PlayStation Store, directly on the PSP or via MediaGo (on the PC). You will notice a new “tab” for comics, next to the game and video tabs. The digital comics store is currently available in the U.S. only.

Captain America category

In the store, you’ll want to check out the “free comics” category, for a selection of comics that you can download for free. You’ll also find a great variety of titles from our partners at Marvel, IDW Publishing and Disney and more. See the launch list below.

The Digital Comics reader is unique to the PSP system and has an easy to use feature called Autoflow that allows you to zoom in/out and move frame by frame or page by page through the comic. It’s so intuitive, you feel as if you are holding and reading the actual book. There’s also a built-in music player so you can listen to the music on your PSP while reading the digital comics.

You can also check out www.playstationcomics.com for more info.

Enjoy!

  • Wow that is a lot of free comics! Thanks, Grace!

    GO USA!!!

  • It would be really nice if we could have this for PS3 :D

I hope you guys @ Sony look into this!

  • I’m 43 years old and still love comics! Please bring out Marvel Comics!

  • @30
You mean like how Canada eventually got the video store? Oh wait, we didn’t. And we won’t get this either.

  • Hi Grace Chen. Do you have any idea why my comic download always fails? I downloaded the digital comic reader but it still doesn’t work.=(. Have any idea why?

  • Dear SCEA,

I provided the same level of profit as your US based purchasers of your hardware.

As you are responsible to Canada as well as the US it would be nice of you if you didn’t ignore 10%+ of your userbase and actually communicated what the issues are. Someone from SCEE mentioned that it was ‘complicated’ to launch in French and English in Canada. There is NO requirement to do so. If it is licensing…say so. You also say “The digital comics store is currently available in the U.S. only.”…this tells me that there ARE plans for a Canadian launch…so tell us them…when will this launch in Canada.

It is unacceptable the SCEA did not work out the licenses to have this launch day and date in both the US and Canada.

  • Awesome! Thanks for all of the free comics!
For anyone who is having trouble downloading the comics: Make sure that the digital comics reader is activated. Go to Account Management, scroll down to System Activation, press X on Video / Comics, and activate it. It worked for me when I couldn’t download the comics, so I hope that helps!
A couple of other people have already said this, but I too, would really like a ebook reader app. for PSP.

  • Is there still a plan to roll out the Marvel Comics Digital Subscription service? Or is this what it has turned into?

Can I combine a Marvel Digital sub with my PSN account? Subscription service is the way to go here not pay per issue.

PS: Why does everyone in Canada complain so much?

  • I dont know what is more FRUSTRATING…The actual time it has taken you guys to make ZERO progress regarding the Video store/comic service…etc in Canada, or the fact that there has been ZERO communication regarding the issue. Isnt that the point of having a “PLAYSTATION BLOG”? If not, you might as well shut this down.

    STOP FU**ING CANADA!

  • Sweet, I’m a collector, around 10,000 books and counting so this is perfect for me, I’ve been looking forward to it’s launch, nicely done guys and thank you very much!!! :D

  • Will the Infamous and Uncharted comics be made available?

  • Come on Chris, do you really think if I am posting I haven’t done all the work on my end? I keep getting the 8010A12E error code and if we take a look in the posts, others are having the same issue. So far I get this error on the free comics, but I am not going to buy one if the free ones don’t work. I am very excited about this new feature, but I am getting very frustrated by these issues.

For the record, Pspgo firmware: 6.20 Digital Reader verison: 1.01.

So don’t fret too much Canada, some of us in the U.S. are in the same boat as you.

  • I love Sony and they are doing much better now especially with the PSN in most areas but seriously remove photo gallery and other useless icons off the XMB which is long overdue for a overhaul. The UI is great but the PS3 needs to mature and not in the social networking area but instead improve on what’s there that we love and constantly have issues with like the browser, music player, and other feedback we have given and I hope SCEA isn’t the reason behind sometimes useless updates or is it just part of that 10yr lifespan of the PS3 lol.

P.S. Love you but 2010 needs to focus on PSN, exclusives or at least good titles that 360 seems to be getting like the new Splitter Cell game and Left For Dead 4, expand the media capabilities of the device and make everything feel less barebone/beta and stop providing little support for things that you hype such as the PS EYE which I finally tried out video chat and I’m extremely disappointed even with my 10mbps connection

  • I think this is a great feature for psp users, but too expensive. $1.99 a comic is too much, considering we can buy a motion comic on itunes, which has animation and voice actors for the same price (which can be viewed on both our ipods and pc’s).

  • I’m sure the servers are swamped as its a new feature. This is not news and should be expected.

  • Oh man…I was totally excited…then I just realized I cant view these on my PS3!! Come on Sony! You have to know I am a HUGE fanboy…and really guys…there is not a good reason why you cant include a reader in the PS3 software that will read these…unless you all are getting caught up by good ol licensing red tape. Man! Hopes up…and there they go crashing down.

  • I been waiting for this for a while. Now, I don’t have to go to the comic book store to get my comic books, I can go directly to my PSP and buy as many as I like. But right now, I’m getting all the free comics before my first one on the Playstation Network.

  • @61…

    No.

  • Trying to download with MediaGo, and am getting error “Windows cannot open this file: ” and it has extension of .xpd.
Tried selecting MediaGo as the program to open it – but nothing happens.
Tried with PSP connected & not.
But, I can get them by using PSstore on the PSP.

  • @59…

I gave up months ago and went to iTunes and Xbox Live for Canada…sad really as I dislike both companies but they do seem to have the ability to bring video to Canada that SONY does not.

  • ——————————–
    REQUESTING BONGO COMICS
    ——————————–
Please bring BONGO COMICS to this ! Loyal Simpsons and Futurama fans such as myself would love to have digital versions of these.

  • So.. Its not available in Canada right?….

  • this is pretty good addition but when can we see some premium avatars?

  • this service screams ” i wanna be on the ps3 too” at me. also, like other posters have said it wouldnt hurt to add manga to it for us otakus XD

seriously, this service would rock even more if you could add spanish comics to it…comics like condorito, pepin menguin, kaliman etc etc

  • Will they ever be in Canada?
i hope there would be as much of update each week =)
    now what about releasing:
    Clerks
    Boondock
Johnny The Homicidal Maniac”-slave labor graphic
and more comic with adult and juvenile sense of humor?

Don’t forget about PSone classic and more PSP/PS3 exclusive!

  • anotherdae | December 16th, 2009 at 1:46 pm
why do people complain in Canada so much?”

Response by me, it’s because we (Canada) did not got the Video Store service on PSN canada and same for Comic and more.
i hope SonyCE would take note of what PlayStation fan would wants.

  • @68

    Why not?

  • Great update guys, it will be welcomed i think. A few things i would like though.

    1. Please add support for Canadians. I love comics and this would really be great for a collector like myself.

    2. Please add Silver Surfer comics, its a great series and i would totally buy them.

Thanks and keep up the good work.

  • One more thing, how much does each comic cost?

  • This Is Good but i cant seem to figure out how to delete the comics…Ive downloaded some free ones but want to make room for some Captain America

How can I do that? Cant seem To figure it out

  • hey, Grace nice collection of comic. Are we going to get Japanese manga soon for the store? Can we put up OEL manga (manga not made in Japan) like Marvel/Del Rey’s X-men: Misfits, or Wolverine: Prodigal Sons? What about some of the OEL manga from Tokyopop (CSI Manga anyone?). It can act as a first line of manga before the real Japanese stuff go to PS store.

  • Any future plans of a subscription like in marvel.com? Thanks!

  • Canada gets screwed again

  • Digging this. I haven’t read comics in probably 15 years. Already spent $6 in your store. Thanks also for the free reads.

Some people were getting errors. When the reader first launched I was getting them too. I had to unregister and re-register my psp under it’s settings.

I would also like to see this brought to ps3. Thanks for a great addition to my psp.

  • Me, as well as hundreds of others have posted about Canada getting a video store or digital comics, but I’ve always assumed the reason why we weren’t getting a response from SCEA was because they miss our posts. The very first post here was about how it’s not available to Canada and still we get no reason as to why.

Is it possible to get a reason why we aren’t getting a video store or digital comics? Is it a licensing issue? Something to do with our law on downloading content like that? Any response will do.

  • @86-It’s because nobody likes Canada. Seriously. Nobody.

  • Great Christmas present! I love comics.

  • Silver Surfer? WTF?

I will give you my money when I see the Silver Surfer. The Infinity Gauntlet mini series was awesome.

    Thanks

  • ‘F’ SCEA and ‘F’ Grace Chen!
I’m more annoyed at the constant refusal to even acknowledge the request for information from fellow Canadians than I am to not have the services and offers people keep commenting about.
Two postings on the blog today both outlining SCEA promotions or services that are not available for Canadians. Last week we managed to have a contest open to Canadians (DC Universe Animation Contest) put on by SOE and DC but SCEA can’t seem to get their act together to support a market they are responsible for.

  • @Juben

I hope you are not serious.
I’m all for learning new languages myself, but I sure don’t think it’s a “fail” to not be able to translate manga themselves….I also don’t think Sony would be stupid enough to bring Raws over to the US since the majority of US citizens DO NOT read Japanese nor have the time/desire to learn all those kanji when they could easily get a translated version of most good manga.

I hope we get manga as well though, ans hopefully at an affordable price.

    And @Foolkiller79:

I agree, we need a FAQ.

  • When it comes to Canada (which it will, right?), can there be Resistance comics. I really want to read them but can’t find them.

  • I see you guy got your hands on the Archie series, if you can get your hands on the Sonic Comic series then you have my $$ but until then i’ll w8

  • A bit expensive if you ask me, I was hoping for $ .99 not 1.99 and 2.99 for the most popular ones.

  • Can sony give some love to the neighbours up north pl0x? would love to watch some psn movies/tvshows and reaad some comics (and hopefully manga)… but yaa know the whole ‘being canadian’ thing, and not living in the US.

I hope i can see some stuff on my ps3. it’s stoopid stuff like this that makes my friends hate ps3 (for no canada stuff (versus xbawkz))

  • Sony/Grace,

I currently don’t have a PSP but I would definitely buy up comics for my PS3. I don’t see at all why you would limit this to just the PSP. Why pass on money from customers when it appears most if not all the work is already done? Please bring this application to the “It only does everything” PS3.

  • Hey Grace, can you please reply to this. Will Canada every get Digital Comics? I really want to know because I wanna download Spider-Man lol.

  • Count me in as another one that is less than impressed that Canada is forgotten. The Life with Playstation recent update doesn’t allow Canadians to view game trailers within Life. And we don’t get the comic book reader. But what is worse, is that we get silence as to Sony’s plans. It would be nice to hear an answer one way or the other.

PS – And dont say its Canada’s copyright laws as you can download comics on the Ipod from Canada.

  • Just spent $15 bucks, well worth it. Thanks! Oh and give us DC/Image comics!

  • Add me to the list of Canadians who are displeased. Heck, I’m not even a native Canadian. I’m from the United States and only technically 2.5 miles from the US. Ugg…

Maybe you should actually address us for once.
