And there’s more here than just running and gunning, although as the test of time has proven, the running and gunning in this series can stand alone pretty darn nicely. There’s also a Combat School, which offers Metal Slug veterans a chance to put their cred on the line in over 70 challenging mission-based trials.

Ultimate Metal Slug fans can purchase Leona, a seventh playable character with her own unique abilities, via PlayStation Store for just 99 cents!

To celebrate the game’s announcement and/or upcoming release, we’ve got a small handful of rare collectibles to give away.

Guffaw at your friends as they look with envy at your striped blue and white authentic Metal Slug boxers.

We’ve also got NINE Japanese promotional posters to give away. Nothing says hardcore like a poster in a language you and/or your friends may not speak!

  • I like Metal Slug because of the run and gunning. Nothing like tearing up some bad guys in the most explosive way possible.

  • My favorite aspect is the way Metal Slug is almost like a bullet hell shooter… with actual guns!

  • i love fighting so many enemies on screen with a buddy even though i die a lot it keeps bringing me back

  • Hmm… ton’s of bullets… zombie puke special weapons? call me pleased :)

  • My favorite aspect of Metal Slug is the announcer. Rocket lawncha!

  • I love the Mindless shooting, well it’s not all mindless but sometimes after a hard days work I don’t care about advancing the Lv, I just want to pretend I’m Mini Rambo.

  • I enjoy the explosions that good off everywhere as you take down enemies.

  • I like that the game doesn’t coddle you. It lets you know you’re going to die. And it’s going to be frequent if you don’t get your twitch skills up there. I enjoy the challenge.

  • Please tell me we have a chance of seeing this in the future on PSN for the PS3!

    • NextGen0,

That\’s more up to the folks at SNK/Playmore, but we\’d love to see it on PS3, too!

      Thanks for the question.

  • I love the randomness of the game, like fighting aliens while being fat.

  • I love how off the wall the game is, as well as all the run and gunning and action.

  • Metal Slug Rocks!

  • I wish I had a PSP! Any chance of a Metal Slug for PS3?

  • My favorite part of metal slug is how much money it takes for mouthbreathers to beat the game with!

  • Man, the best part of Metal Slug is that the series never dies. They just keep coming back with great games like XX. 2D sidescrollers are the absolute best.

  • i love the one lining humor,OMG BIG F***** guns and the aweesomeee power ups ! and also the co-op feature….its like a modern day contra for me man !

  • My favorite aspect of the Metal Slug series is the jaw-dropping amount of things I can annihilate, blow-up, and shoot the ever livin’ carrot sticks out of. It never ceases to entertain me, and has kept me coming back for more all these years later.

Also, I need boxers, people. I’m running dangerously low.

  • I love Metal Slug because the arcade style action reminds me of a great era of gaming that has been gone for some time now.

  • My favorite aspect of Metal Slug would be the extremely fun co-op. There’s nothing better than blowing stuff up with a friend.

  • Close to my birthday. Great present, Atlus!

  • Love the series – love the offer – just enough off-center to be fun! Can’t wait until February 23rd!

    • Yes, and it should be stressed, because I goofed and failed to mention it in the post, but it\’s only $19.99!

  • My favorite part of Metal Slug is the SHOTGUN! So satisfying!

  • I love the co-op play.

  • My favorite aspect of Metal Slug is the music and the humor of the game. Nothing is more fun than being turned into a zombie in Metal Slug X.

  • I have always been a fan of enemy variety and boss fights and metal Slug is my all-time favorite shooter for its creative diversity of enemies that you encounter and challenging boss fights where you need determination, patience, and a whole ton of firepower to bring down!

  • My favorite aspect of Metal Slug is the over-the-top action set in a cartoony art style.

  • Really cool game, thanks ^^

  • Great news. I love these games and use to play them when they had them in the arcades.

    • Me too. Who can forget those great Neo-geo units with the 4 games you could choose from. King of Monsters, Art of Fighting, Crossed Swords… ahh, the nostalgia.

  • I love the series for its incredible attention to detail. Every weapon ejects a spent shell casing and each vehicle is unique and inspiring in its given game. One of SNK’s great moments that rocked the arcades, handhelds (neo geo pocket!), and the consoles. Glad to see Metal Slug again.

  • I would rock those boxers outside as they give me the power of Marco to jump inside of my neighbor’s vehicles and pilot them against enemy soldiers disguised as other neighbors. I’m fairly sure I’m right, I see how they stare at me, I see. ..

My favorite aspect though has always been the ridiculously fluid animation, it’s been 15 years and the series is still a benchmark for 2d action games. Action and humor kind of ties it though, the zombie walk is still Thriller worthy.

  • I’ve always been a fan of the Metal Slug series ever since the team worked for IREM on some of my faves like In the Hunt.

The one thing I liked most about all their games is the incredible animation. It’s what brought all their games to life.

You can bet I’ll be picking this game up asap, despite a busy Feb/March schedule. Always time for Metal Slug.

  • I’ll chalk up my favorite aspect of Metal Slug as the cool [metal] Gear to use and endless amount of detailed and colorful sprites to lay waste to! Looking forward to Metal Slug Triple XXX after this one.

  • The best thing about Metal Slug is that after all these years it’s still 2D. That deserves some kudos.

  • The best thing about Metal Slug is the over the top action and constant challenge. It’s a series that continues to remain true to its roots.

  • I love the run and gunning and the tearem up animations that are just so classic.

  • My favorite aspect of the series is that it stayed true to its run’n’gun roots while managing to stay fresh with every installment. Simply put, Metal Slug is pretty much the best series ever. Also, I need those boxers. Like, now.

  • Metal Slug has always been one of my favorite game series. I would have to say my favorite aspect is that the series after so many years is that I can put in a Metal Slug and know that my boredom will end and the good time will flow forth like fire from a HEAVY MACHINE GUN once I jump from my parachute and start halting General Morden’s evil plan. If you have a Metal Slug and a friend (and who says you need the friend lol), then you have a good time waiting to happen. The art is great, there’s humor around every corner, and the action is fast paced and amazing whats not to love.

  • My favorite aspect of Metal Slug has always been SNK’s ability to keep making gorgeous 16 bit graphic shooters that never hiccup during intense boss battles. Long live the Metal Slug franchise!

  • Awesome! I love the Metal Slug series and cannot wait for this.

My favorite aspect of the game is the great animation and attention to detail!

  • Where did this come from? Another Metal Slug game is a very pleasant surprise.

Is it just another rerelease of two?

My favorite aspect is the game’s art style, definitely. Everything has a charm to it, the characters, the environments, the loads of items.

It’s also a game that anyone can play. That style is very inviting, and the gameplay is very accessible.

I’ll be buying this one posthaste. I just hope it has better load times than the PSP version of MS Anniversary Collection.

  • I love the smooth and fluid animations!

  • Besides all the crazy gun play, i like one aspect in the game, where you can eat all the food and make your character fat, and your a fat person walkin around shooting soldiers, but it also acts a one hit shield.

  • oh and a p.s. on my comment(#39) Marco is the coolest hands down.

  • Is metal slug XX being released in EUROPE?

    • AM_AUTOS,

Alas, that is not for us to say, as we\’re just North American publishers. Sorry about that.

  • I love Metal Slug just because most of these people just want the boxers.

  • I love Metal Slug, can’t wait to try this on out!

  • Love Metal Slug, sequel looks awesome, and thanks for the chance to win some swag!

  • Side-scrolling shoot-em-up and nostalgia are my favorite aspects, need I say more? It’s friggin metal slug!

Also I could use some video game themed unmentionables, it would officially certify my nerdiness.

    • Vengeful-Chaos,

I\’m pretty sure your use of the term \”video game themed unmentionables\” cerifies your nerdiness, but you\’re in the running to be randomly chosen regardless :P
