And there’s more here than just running and gunning, although as the test of time has proven, the running and gunning in this series can stand alone pretty darn nicely. There’s also a Combat School, which offers Metal Slug veterans a chance to put their cred on the line in over 70 challenging mission-based trials.

Ultimate Metal Slug fans can purchase Leona, a seventh playable character with her own unique abilities, via PlayStation Store for just 99 cents!

To celebrate the game’s announcement and/or upcoming release, we’ve got a small handful of rare collectibles to give away.

Metal Slug XX Underwear

Guffaw at your friends as they look with envy at your striped blue and white authentic Metal Slug boxers.

We’ve also got NINE Japanese promotional posters to give away. Nothing says hardcore like a poster in a language you and/or your friends may not speak!

  • I could do with some new underwear. My wifes doesnt fit me since she dropped 50 pounds…..

  • Metal Slug is the best of the best from SNK. sometimes you just need a good run n gun with a weird sense of humor to relieve stress. not to mention i’ll buy any game with the atlus logo. good times.

  • What I love about Metal Slug is the chaos of it and how it makes my brain hurt sooooo good.

  • I like when you can just run to the enemy while dodging the bullets shooting anything else and just knife him to death! Can’t get any better than this… oh yeah it can! You can also ride some vehicles for more mass destruction!

  • When I was a kid, I have never realized that I had so much fun with a game, a game by the name of Contra. It was so much fun, the running and gunning was the best part of it, even the Power-Ups were great. I have played from the first one on the NES and later on. I would never have thought there would be a game that would surpass that, was I wrong. Then one day, at a local Chinese food place, I saw it. What got my attention was not how it played or how it looked, but it was the Scream the soldier made when you used a rocket launcher on him. Saw the title Metal Slug on the screen, and popped in my quarter. Already from the music and the way everything played it looked great. Rescued a refuge and got the H power-Up.I swear I went so crazy with that thing I actually never felt more excited playing a game before, and the vehicles and transformations were awesome. Even though I sill play contra Metal Slug became that newcomer that will top it for many reasons. To this day I have been playing every entry in the series. Hell I even bought Neo Geo Battle Coliseum to play as Marco. Truth be told, fighting games are my favorite genre of any video games. But Metal Slug holds a very special place in my video game heart.

  • Good old Metal Slug! I could use a pair of beat up boxers!

  • I’ve always enjoyed the aesthetics of the series. The simple, addictive gameplay combined with the distinct art direction make for an awesome trip back to my childhood!

  • I like Metal Slug because of its relentless, ever increasing demand on your reflexes and your instincts to jump, duck, and otherwise dodge a downpour of fire, while selecting and shooting seemingly endless waves of enemies. That and the game will randomly turn you into a monkey. A monkey.

  • favorite aspect of metal slug would be the memories of playing it at the laundromat when i was a kid :D

  • Been a fan of the Metal Slug games since the 1st one back in the arcade. I always liked all the attention to detail, and the little things going on in the background– birds flying off when things explode, merchants arguing with customers, etc. Those little touches always made it feel like SNK was putting a little extra effort in that most companies didn’t.

will definitely be picking this up, thanks for the $19.99 MSRP– makes it a day 1 purchase. (and I agree with the previous comment that I hope the loading times are a bit more streamlined than Metal Slug Collection was, that was sadly a bit of a disappointment on the PSP)

  • I’m god-awful at this game, but I’ve always loved the smooth and detailed graphics. They’re usually well done, undies or not.

  • My favorite aspect of Metal Slug is how it puts so many other shmups to shame! Amazing art style, wicked animation, balls out shooting fun!

  • Finally, a cure for my arcade nostalgia that conviently fits in my pocket. Thank you Atlus:)

  • My favorite aspect… blowing stuff up!

  • So Atlus is publishing an SNK/Playmore PSP title instead of them doing it themselves because they know I won’t buy crap ports that take (loading) (loading) (loading) to the next level just so I (loading) (loading) (loading) die from an invisible bullet that miraculously hits Fio in game?

    Fool me once, SNK/Playmore…

Call me when you can confirm it isn’t going to be loading IN GAME and you can give me back the $40 I spent on Metal Slug Anthology PSP that was a huge turd for 1000 owners because it was a load a minute game. (Oh, wait, it sucked for 2000’s even with the extra RAM as well… silly me!)

  • my favorite aspect of Metal Slug is the crazy over powering weapons (Iron Lizard! ftw!) and how the enemy soldiers scream in agony from grenade. “OWWWWW!!!!”

  • this is just plain awesome, time to add another to my collection!

  • Well my favorite part of Metal Slug was just the various humorous situations you get into (like turning into a mummy or zombie), but now my favorite part is going to be Leona.

  • I can’t wait for this. I’ll definitley get it!

  • My favorite thing about Metal Slug, besides the classic “Contra” like gameplay, is it’s strange sense of humor. I really wish more games had as much of a sense of humor about themselves as Metal Slug does.

Oh yeah, turning into a zombie and vomiting beams of blood to kill your enemies is always nice too.

  • My favorite aspect of the series is the pure wackiness and hecticness found in each and every game in the series :D

  • By far my favorite things about the metal slug franchise are the awsome 2d graphics and the classic run and gun style that has sadly been harder and harder to find as fewer and fewer 2d games are being published. Thanks snk and atlus, i’ll definitely be picking this one up!

  • I love the over the top action of Metal Slug and the amount of things exploding on screen at one time.

  • I have wasted many hours at the arcade on Metal Slug and many quarters. I also have all the games in series up to this point :3 So this is a day one buy for me!!!!!

As for favorite moment.. geez there are so many from the amazing Metal Slugs to the crazy Boss fights it is hard to pick just one. I just list my top 3 then :D

3: The SL-001 Metal Slug. The classic of all classic Metal Slug vehicles. This thing is like the Corvette of Metal Slugs except it has Vulcan Gun and a Cannon.

2: Zombie mode. Sure getting hit by a Zombie and turning into one has its drawbacks like you are slow, can’t jump well and are basically a sitting duck but who cares!!! You can now puke a blood stream across the screen killing everything in site.
    Ultra Gory!!! Ultra Cool!!!

And my number one favorite thing about Metal Slug.

    1. Utan the Monkey. Yes, who could not love cute little Utan. After freeing the little dude from his cage Utan decides to tag along with you and repay his dept by helping you out. Armed with a Uzi this monkey was looking to bring the pain and killed everything that moved. Tho our time together was always brief the moments of carnage will live in my heart forever.

  • I haven’t played muxh of this series, but I do have the MS Collection on PSP so hopefully that’s a good place to start.

  • i like metal slug for its hardcore attitude ^_^ its metal slug after all XD

  • I love how with each game progressed, the chaos became more and more insane and challenging. The fact that you can take down hordes of enemies and take one little misstep into that bullet and end it all just seems like a great challenge to me. I always took it as a personal challenge with friends to see who would die first.

  • Simple. The series is classic gun-&-run gameplay & it’s just plain fun!

  • Favorite aspect of metal slug? It’s gotta be the fantastic animation. I mean, how many 2D sprite games out there move as well and as chaotically as Metal Slug?…not very many if any at all.

  • I love Metal Slug for the run and gun, fun and goofy characters, all the crazy gimmicks, and all the tiny details that go into the game. I’ve been a huge SNK and Metal Slug fan for years!

  • What I love the most about Metal Slug is the co-op gameplay! I love playing with either friends or family members and having a blast bowing **** up and blasting Aliens to bits! Its great fun and it reminds me of the good old “old school” gameplay that I’ve always loved.

Hope this game does well and that it releases both on PSN and retail for PSPgo/PSP users.

  • I love the simplicity of Metal Slug games – just fire it up and start shooting! Sometimes the finest FPS can’t satisfy the need for pure chaos and carnage. That’s when I reach for Metal Slug Anthology!

  • I’m pretty sure I’ve sunk enough quarters into any machine with Metal Slug in it to buy a pair of those boxers for every day of the year and then some.

  • Gotta love Metal Slug, side-scrolling games are the best!

  • Frantic, old-school side-scrolling shooter–need more be said?

  • I love the old-school gameplay and the challenge.

Will be excited to play this, it will be available for download as well, right?

  • My favorite aspect is the prisoners, they are hilarious and occasionally helpful in their item drops. This looks like a title I will definitely be picking up, I grew up with Metal Slug on my original PlayStation.

  • My favorite aspect of Metal Slug is the non-stop action on the screen. One wrong move and you’re dead! The scream when you die is hilarious as well.

  • Isn’t it obvious? The best aspect of Metal Slug is the 2D graphics and animations. Looking forward to this.

  • My favorite aspect of Metal Slug is having instant co-op fun ready at a moment’s notice.

What’s better than instant co-op action? Portable instant co-op action!

  • My favourite thing about Metal Slug is Clark’s special ability in the more recent games where he just tosses a dude straight up, King of Fighters style.

  • what is your favorite aspect of Metal Slug?
The insanity of it all !!

The graphics are blissfull pure 2-D sprites.
The action is right on the money, how arcade can you get more than this ?
The music really fits the game.
The characters are all fun to play and to watch do their thing.
There are new weapons with each Metal Slug that gets out.
The Boss are always freaking amazing.

I’ve been playing Metal Slug since the first one. That serie made a hole in my pocket for having and shoving so much coins into the machine.

Long live Metal Slug and thanks Atlus for bringing the newest one over here :)

  • my favorite aspect of Metal Slug is the awesome level design in the games

  • Metal Slug! Best thing about this game is the animations, detail, and POW doing kamehameha!

  • It be nice to have a collector edition that comes with the original Neo-geo ROM cartridge, now that be sweet. Those things where bigger than my hand ^_^.

  • Great to see the Franchise still alive and kicking after all these years! ^__^

  • Metal Slug and King of Fighters are my favorite games from SNK.
What I love about metal slug is the ability to choose different paths to your mission part 3 is my favorite, becoming a zombie or fat never gets old.

  • Great to see SNK partnering with Atlus! I’d be trying to pick this game up for sure.

  • Fav aspect of Metal Slug is playing it with another person.

Usually my brother and we’d have a blast but he doesn’t have a PSP. So i’d probably play it with my friends… hopefully they’ll know what i’m talking about unlike Demon’s Souls and 3d Dot Game Heroes

  • I enjoy shooting the rocket launchers.
