Aram Jabbari's Avatar + Posted by Aram Jabbari on Jan 05, 2010 // Manager of PR and Sales, ATLUS

Assembled denizens of PlayStation Blog,

Do you spend your days longing for a colorful, fast-paced throwback to the good old days of arcade action games? Do you daydream about grabbing an ally and riddling wave after wave of enemy soldiers with an endless stream of lead? Does your PlayStation Portable whisper to you, asking you to sate its hunger for old school awesome?

Metal Slug XX PSP Box

If so, seek help, but also, check out Metal Slug XX, coming February 23 to a PSP system near you (preferably yours).

Metal Slug XX explodes with the same winning formula of over-the-top action and cartoon mayhem that’s kept Metal Slug a premier franchise for over a decade. Frantic and fun, serious Metal Slug fans and casual gamers alike can relive the glory and charm of old school cooperative arcade play, teaming with a friend via ad-hoc multiplayer to outrun and outshoot hundreds of enemies and liberate as many prisoners as possible.

Metal Slug XX Screen 3

And there’s more here than just running and gunning, although as the test of time has proven, the running and gunning in this series can stand alone pretty darn nicely. There’s also a Combat School, which offers Metal Slug veterans a chance to put their cred on the line in over 70 challenging mission-based trials.

Ultimate Metal Slug fans can purchase Leona, a seventh playable character with her own unique abilities, via PlayStation Store for just 99 cents!

To celebrate the game’s announcement and/or upcoming release, we’ve got a small handful of rare collectibles to give away.

Metal Slug XX Underwear

First off, FOUR random commenters will get some nifty Metal Slug boxers. They’re not quite for wearing, although we’re sure as long as you’re good about keeping things under control that they’ll last you a nice long time, but they’re certainly the perfect prize for a Metal Slug fan to show off. Guffaw at your friends as they look with envy at your striped blue and white authentic Metal Slug boxers.

We’ve also got NINE Japanese promotional posters to give away. Nothing says hardcore like a poster in a language you and/or your friends may not speak!

All you need to do to be eligible, aside from being a resident of the United States or Canada, is comment under this post in response to the following: what is your favorite aspect of Metal Slug? We’ll randomly choose winners and get in touch with you!

Metal Slug XX Screen 5

Lock and load, friends: Metal Slug XX is set for release on February 23, 2010! We’ll be back soon with more info about this explosive upcoming retro romp!

I love the sprites in this game. They may be low in resolution, but they more than make up in character and detail. Fio FTW!

I can’t wait for this! My favorite aspects of Metal Slug: the art style, the humor, and the intense co-op action. Love Metal Slug!

I’d have to say that the awesome animation is my favorite thing about Metal Slug. The first time I saw it at my local Arcade I just sat there watching it in amazement. Then I put a quarter in and the gameplay had me hooked for life! Oh and the announcer… ROWKETTT RAUNCHER! XD

I love this series because it really hasn’t changed much over the years. I know what I’m buying and love it.

I would say that my favorite aspect(s) of the Metal Slug series are the sheer replayability of the games and the sprite animations. I’ve yet to see a game that does sprites better than Metal Slug. The fact that SNK puts so much detail into such a simple game is more than enough to earn all of those quarters they took from me.

i just love the classic side scrolling gameplay to it. so many good memories from when i was younger playing this at an arcade unit at this waterpark my camp would go to once a year. the memories of the game and how fun it is makes me want to go back there so bad.

also, yay atlus, you have been such a good company and i love supporting you. keep it up.

I just really like the Metal Slug series for some great old side-scrolling action, and some fantastic boss battles, not to mention some swank design.

My favorite aspect of the Metal Slug series?

I’ve always appreciated the attention to detail. Be it in the character animations, or the highly detailed levels and backgrounds, something is always moving. Old-school side-scrollers are often plagued with rather static levels where Metal Slug excels at creating living, breathing worlds to explore.

Thank you for bringing this to the states, Atlus!! For me, MS has always been about the awesome art style and great tunes.

As a grown man who sleeps with a copy of the Metal Slug Complete Sound Box by the bed, I’d appreciate a pair of those boxers to really creep out my wife.

This brings nostalgic tears to my eyes…
Its been so long since ive played Metal Slug Arcade (although i own the anthology collection :P )This game was my favorite side scroller mayhem of all time.

My favorite aspect of the game is the explosion, carnage and anything related to that sort. i mean the possibility go on from stabbing people to using a TANK to obliterate the enemy, and the guns are just ridiculous lol

AND MARCO ALL THE WAY PEOPLE!

I love the ease of just picking up a Metal Slug game, getting into it and not caring how many lives you lose or how far you get. So many games these days make you feel like you seriously lost out if you die, this series is too enjoyable to care if you have to restart as long as you get the time to restart.

Hope to win a poster, that would be sweet.

I like Metal Slug simply because it’s so classic – the hectic side-scrolling run’n’gun gameplay, the over-the-top humor, the great art and music… oh man. I’ve been a Metal Slug fan since forever, or rather, I’ve been an SNK fan since forever. While I admit that I did not like the more recent Metal Slug games as much as the older games in the series, I still have plenty of faith in the series and I’m really looking forward to Metal Slug XX! Especially with Leona. :3

+ escroute on January 5th, 2010 at 7:06 pm said:

This game series is SO classic. Not only is it’s gameplay so hilarious, but the game itself is/was a quarter-eater.

The ridiculous amount of continues used to beat any of these games has to be one of my favourite aspects – just because it shows ya how addictive it is.

always has been a bonding game for me and my boyfriend – always will be.

The old-school arcade action is great of course, but for me it’s the humor and the art style that make the game stand out. I still love the enemy soldiers laughing at your corpse when you die, and then screaming in horror when you come back from the dead on your next life!
