Rock Band 2 PS3 Software Update

119 6

Hi there, PlayStation fans!

My name is Dan Teasdale. I’m DeliciousBees on the PlayStation Network, but more importantly I’m also the Lead Designer on Rock Band 2!

We’re perfectionists over here at Harmonix, and we want to make sure that everyone’s Rock Band experiences are as awesome as they possibly can be. With that in mind, I’m proud to announce that the Rock Band team has finalized a software update for Rock Band 2 on the PlayStation 3 that addresses some common feature requests from our fans. We’ve also added some great new functionality that we think you’ll be excited to try out when the software update arrives this Thursday.

This update wouldn’t be possible without the feedback and suggestions that we receive from everyone in both the Rock Band and PlayStation communities. Everybody here at Harmonix takes your forum posts and suggestions to heart, and we wouldn’t be able to make our games as awesome as they are without all of the feature requests and feedback that we get from you on a daily basis. So from all of us here at Harmonix, thank you, and please keep letting us know what you’d like to see in future updates and games!

This update includes:

  • “Sort by Stars” in Quickplay. If you hit the “Sort” button on the Song Select screen, you’ll come to a brand new sort that orders songs by the star ratings that you’ve achieved on each song. Each star rating gets a category, as well as an “Unplayed” category for songs that don’t have a star rating recorded. Finally, you can record your progress towards gold starring every song in your library!
  • Improved “Sort by Stars” fix: Players will not have to beat a previous high score to record a star rating for their songs.
  • Chord HOPO improvements: If you’ve played The Beatles: Rock Band, you’ll notice much more robust handling of chord hammer-ons and pull-offs. This patch implements those changes in Rock Band 2 to provide a more natural chord hammer-on/pull-off experience.
  • Velocity Sensitivity on Ion Drum Kits: Ion Drum kits now support velocity sensitivity in both drum fills and Drum Freestyle mode.
  • Rock Band Network Store Support: When the Rock Band Network goes live, select songs will be available for PlayStation 3 users through a new storefront available in game. Stay tuned for more information closer to the launch of RBN!
  • SingStar Wireless Microphone Support. Rock Band 2 now supports the SingStar Wireless Microphones currently available through Europe! Finally, you can now have a fully wireless Rock Band experience on your PlayStation 3!

We’re extremely happy to be able to finally release this update for the PlayStation 3 version of Rock Band 2. We know many of you are rabid PlayStation rockers, and it’s a priority for us to make sure that everyone gets the best experience playing Rock Band. On behalf of everyone here at Harmonix, we hope you enjoy the new features!

Rock,
-DanT

  • Hypercules in game voice chat has been around for quite a while. I know that because I use my blutooth headset all the time. in fact I use my mute button so that they don’t hear me strumming away. WTF are you using text chat for?

GripNRip you can change the cymbals around no problem dude. Just plug them in the order that you want to use them for. I don’t get how it would be an issue if you can change the color of the cymbals by changing the cap and changing the port you plug it into. Makes no sense to me.

  • The voice chat sucks though. The voices comes out of the TV instead of the mic’s speakers. And I know you can set it to not play over the TV’s speakers, but it still plays it over the speakers. Hope this gets fix.

  • Add a patch to remove the copy protection from the game saves!!!!!!!! I wish I could play Rock Band 2 again, but I bought a new slim since my (now fixed) 20GB YLOD. Was getting so far, then bam. no more.

  • @ROLO_ONFIRE
yeah i have tried auto and manual calibrate many many times, still have to strum after the mark passes the point, so its playable if i ignore the song entirely and just focus on timing visually…

  • It’s great to see that even so long after release you guys are still interested in supporting Rockband 2. You guys have earned some major respect in my book. Also, I’m deffinately looking forward to this update. I haven’t played Rockband in a while, so this will give me a reason to play again.

  • thats awesome

  • well, i still play rock band 2 on ps3 and i expected a little bit more after all the time it has taken…

still good stuff though, i guess its better than nothing (like other developers that forget about their games even if they are full of glitches)

  • Any chance some online multiplayer fixes found their way into this patch? I’ve been able to play online with a buddy once but never again and there seems to be nothing wrong with our configurations as best I can tell; I’ve seen comments from many others online with the same problem. It’d be great to get a patch for some of the connection issues as all other PS3 games work just fine for us.

  • I appreciate the update. Though the one type of sorting I would really like would be in the music store the ability to sort by price.

  • So what’s going on with the Nyko Frontman guitar? Mine hasn’t worked for months, nor has anyone elses… Could you update that?

  • keep up the good work harmonix aand for continuing to support rock band 2 even tho it is now quite old and also congrats for stealing all my money from buyin rock band 2 songs O.O

  • Will voice chat now come through the headset or still through speakers? Its impossible to hear what people are saying unless the volume is really high, making it way too loud when your playing an actual song.

  • Sounds great
Is there any way we can have a way to put songs on a do no play list on mystery….I imported RB1 into RB2 and I never want to play Green Grass and High Tides again. Its just tooooooooo long. I dont care how far into a setlist I am If I see that pop up I turn the game off.

  • Hello and thanks for the constant support your company gives to us, the players.
Anyway, my concern is this: What if I get a new high score with less stars, or a higher star count with a lower score? How would the scores get saved?
    Thanks.

Also, more from The Strokes, please :P

  • Oh yeah, also, I’d reccomend making a small change in the RB store; You could make it so we could see the difficulty of the songs on the store without having to actually select them.
    Thanks again.

  • Well, I guess any questions about the voice chat, or the SAS, aren’t one of the “select” posts you will be answering. Completely ignoring these issues again. So, we’ll see tomorrow if they are ignored for good.
At least you got the RBN implemented, something I have no desire to spend any money on.
Thinking twice before spending any cash on any new games that may contain bugs you refuse to fix as well.

  • Mr. Dan Teasdale,

WHen are we going to see an update that allows us to DELETE individual songs from the game (i.e. HD)? I will never believe this is a “PS3 issue”. You guys are smart, talented programmers: the game and code should allow gamers to delete individual songs they no longer wish to play. HD space is not infinite. I have lots of songs I downloaded and enjoyed playing but now I’d like to remove them, individually. If we can’t have ability to remove individual songs, it would be nice to have a FILTER in the “Quick Play” mode that can simply REMOVE songs from the display list.

  • Awesome update! I wish I had Rock Band 2 for the PS3, I have got it for the Wii because I didn’t have a PS3 at the time. I just have one question, where is my Muse DLC?

  • Rockband is still by far the best musical experience on the PS3…thx for the update

  • Is Beatles rockband getting any kind of patch as well or is this just rockband 2?

  • Hey Dan. Its great to hear that this update is finally done, but one question still lingers and that is has the lag that occures (from having a large HDD with HUNDREDS of RB DLC) while playing been fixed? I own a 500 GB HDD and EVERY time i would try to play RB2 there would be such a horrible lag with the the game, that it would become game-breaking (jummping audio & no animation movement, but if you hit an instruments button it would register as a miss)

  • Awesome update Dan. Better late than never Some suggestions for a future update:

Multi-user profiles for the PS3 version. The functionality is there, please add this in the future.

RBN of course. We want to make and submit too, but as you mentioned beffore, do it right and don’t sloppily port it. We’ll appreciate it a lot.

Unlock the game save and tie it to our PSN accounts. Again, our gratitude would be boundless.

  • Where can I sell my Wii instruments so I can buy RB2 full band for my PS3? These updates are awesome.

  • Is there any work being done by Harmonix or Sony to fix the nyko wireless frontman guitars that no longer operate on any GH/RB game for PS3. Both my guitars were nykos, and right now they are totally useless due to a PS3 firware update.

  • Can you please answer my question about supporting LPCM 5.1 output over HDMI? I’d really love to see this in Beatles Rock Band, especially.

Any comments on enabling 2x MSAA like most other 720p games would also be nice :)

  • when green day rock band is coming? and any chance nickelback songs? hope you answer and thanks for the update, and keep the great work a lot of people apreciate your effort dont sweat about some negative comments.

  • I hate to be a broken record, but locking the Save file is a huge issue with your game. I had to delete my profile due to a bug that occured with my login and I essentially had to delete my Rockband save.

Please consider this for a future patch.

    Thanks.

  • About time, it’s a shame PS3 owners had to wait for this. This whole generation has been like that unfortunately.

  • I am VERY suprised to see another update, so YAY ^_^
This might get me to play agian soon. I like the above suggestions, but I have a few:

    – I’d like to be able to change the difficulty after failing a song without having to go all the way back to the song selection screen.
    – Everyone who’s playing online should NOT have to fail because someone got disconnected or quit mid session.
    – Also, is there a way that we could accept an invite without having to go ALL the way back to the main menu? Resident Evil 5 allows you to hit the PS button and “accept invite”

I TOTALLY agree with whomever suggested a better chracter creator model, but I’m sure that we won’t see that till Rock Band 3.
PS Home avatars would be a bad idea…(let the xbox keep that one) Now maybe a RockBand Home space where we could play songs on that and/or watch other people play in an area that resembles a moderate sized venue… now THAT would be NICE!

  • funny i get rock band 2 for Christmas

  • @
You guys might not be console bias, but who is when money is involve? With the way Microsoft is tossing money at third party developers, I will not be surprise if you guys got a huge check from them also.

  • Awesome – great to see you guys are still making things better here.

I have one request – would it be possible to make Rockband 2 remember that I set “Breakneck Speed” when it saves? Right now, I have to remember to turn it on every time I start the game. I know it keeps track of that in Lego Rock Band, and now that I play both I keep forgetting to set it in Rock Band 2 and have to quit out of a setlist (I can’t stand the slow scroll speed).

Thanks again for the continued hard work.

  • FYI
I tried to download the update tonight (Wednesday) even though you said Thursday (so sue me.) I start RB2 and it tells me there is an update (1.02 or something.) I say ‘ok’ and then it waits about 5 seconds before it reboots my PS3. I hope this is a result of me jumping the gun.

  • Please eliminate the dongles and release Bluetooth controllers.

  • I’ve gotta say, you guys sure do care about your customers. I understand that you all at HMX are doing all you can to keep us happy, but if there were anything I wanted in the next installment or patch,

-Disconnected players not to end the song for the rest of us.

-Gameplay from TB:RB, including 3-part harmonies

-Rhythm Guitar (I think I spelt that right). And this would do more than just save someone from a less-than-interesting Bass line. Say you add this and vocal harmonies. That would give you 2 guitarists, 1 bassist, 1 drummer, and 3 singers, leading up to 7 people playing at once.(No one will be stuck on the couch)

Other than that, just keep doing what you do with the DLC.

  • Thanks for the update! Just please make sure that we get all the songs from RBN that X-Box does

  • Oh and sorry about the double post but I’ll second that vote for some Nickelback songs, as well as some Eagles?

  • The update is already available.

  • Having the exact same issue others reported on my PS3, that is, I launch Rock Band 2, it says there’s update data (1.02) that needs to be downloaded, it goes to the “Please wait” screen, and then the PS3 reboots without downloading anything. Others have mentioned it eventually worked, but I have tried it about 20 times now, no luck.

  • Glad I’m not the only one having trouble with updating today. I have the same problem as doctorflawls. I’ve had no luck. I’m also guessing this is just for RB2 and not RB1, Lego RB, or The Beatles RB, but I’ll check.

  • Uh oh, problems…

The stars for songs you’ve already played in QuickStart mode are RESET by this patch?

  • Two things.

First, sort by stars doesn’t work: every song is under “unplayed” … even after I go in and play a song. No star ratings exist for any song, apparently, even ones played after the update. So this update is kinda useless so far. Is this a bug, or what?

Second, I find it bit distasteful that you say, on the PlayStation Blog, that we could write a song for the Rock Band Network since you require us to have an Xbox 360 to do it.

  • While we’re talking The Beatles: Rock Band, when is “All You Need Is Love” coming to the PS3? We’ve been waiting for about four months!

  • I managed to install the patch, and now I am having the EXACT same issue that was reported, that is, sort by stars doesn’t work: every song is under “unplayed” … even after I go in and play a song. No star ratings exist for any song, apparently, even ones played after the update.

  • And now my PS3 just gave me the green/yellow/red lights. It appears to be dead.

    Yay.

  • Patch ain’t there… and it makes the PS3 reboot…

  • Hey Dan Teasdale you probably wont answer this but do you think it is possible for Harmonix to add “Let it be” and “Hey Jude” for The Beatles Rock Band DLC?

  • While I honestly appreciate your reply and link, I have no more desire to go fishing in that massive thread (I’ve been doing that for over 3 months), when you have answered my question about it right here. That answer being: no, these bugs are still not fixed. So, thank you for answering.
I can also appreciate this new communication attempt to the PS3 community, via this blog. Unfortunately, with the SAS bug (spanning two separate games, and well over two years) along with the other extremely requested bug fixes still existing, you can understand my displeasure as a member of this community and as a customer.
Fortunately, the shaky arrow is a PS3 specific bug (along with the broken voice chat), and doesn’t affect all consoles; so others may still enjoy “the best experience playing Rock Band” you mentioned twice in your blog.

  • I’ve been having the same problem as “triple_lei”, my PS3 just restarts instead of downloading and installing the patch.
Will there be any fix for this?

  • Looks like a “half-ass” attempt at doing a update. Same problem as the others. System restarts every time I try to install it. So much for testing out the patch before the guinea pigs “US” download it. -Thanks…
