CES 2010: 3D Q&A

92 1

3D is undoubtedly the biggest buzzword at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show. We know it’s coming to the PS3, but how exactly is that going to work for current PS3 owners? I asked that question of SCEA Director of Hardware Marketing John Koller, and the answers are in the video below.

We’ll have more from CES here on Monday. In the meantime, you can find more Sony CES news here.

  • I want a 3D TV that doesn’t require glasses.

  • I wish 3D didn’t require glasses. It really is pointless if I have to wear them.

  • any info when the update or updates will be out for the ps3?

  • 3d glasses are needed because the human eye.
If the human eye was like that, then 3d tvs would already be in our homes, and everything we see and do will be 3d to us.
I got a question, SONY! when is the next-gen psp, or next walkman/mp3 coming out
(yes I already know what your going to say, NO COMMENT)

  • RAWR
I guess those 3D glasses are the least of my worries >.>
Gotta get me one of those 3D HDTV.
    Stupid recession.

  • hey jeff any word on fix on the video viewing on the ps3 on the psblog? still havent fixed it yet still says not supported. plz reply thanks jeff

    • I don\’t know when it will happen, only that it *will* happen. I\’m keen to see it as well, believe me.

  • Glad I held off on buying an HDTV Black Friday :) i’ll have to get one of these 3D TVs once they come out if they aren’t outrageous.

  • so we need a 3D HDTV as well? meh maybe a few years from now.

  • 3D! The “wave of the future”… from 50 years ago. What a waste of time and resources.

  • @ 4

3D glasses are not needed. It’s a tech called autosteroscopic television. They refract light off the pixels at different angles to produce the same effect as 3d (or something like that, don’t quote me, Google it yourself).

I wear glasses, so this is good news for me. I’m pretty sure that they showed off some of these TVs at CES this year.

  • Phillips had one being prototyped last year. I’m sure other companies have similar things in the works or ready for production. I actually recall hearing something about autostereoscopic television at this year’s CES (just can’t recall what, exactly).

  • i stick to normal gaming

  • Hi Jeff,
I was wondering what is the exact date for the GOW3 footage? I need to know so I can take the day off from work man. I really want to see this game. Also will this be one of the games that support 3D as well? Oh. When we see the GOW3 footage is there going to be another media blow out as well?

  • 2010 is finally here! Cool video update guys! Anyway, I have something that I must get of my chest about PSN. Last night, my friend and I spent about an hour trying to figure out how to play Fight Night Round 4 online. In the end, we were unsuccessful, pissed off and gave up. Sending a private game invite on PSN is a real pain in the ass with each title having their own wacky system. With every new game, it’s about an hour challenge. When can we expect to see a unified PSN? This is getting pretty tiresome.
Does anybody on here know, how can I send a private invite to someone on my friends list in Fight Night Round 4?

  • i cant wait for these tv’s. im glad i didnt buy a new HDTV last year. im gonna wait for one of these TV’s. hope they arent crazy expensive

  • ‘3D’ sucked two decades ago, it still sucks today.

  • thanks Jeff for replying.

  • Why some 3D TVs require glasses and others don’t? I don’t get it.

And will all game need a patch to work in 3D? because if they do, then honestly i’m not very exited for 3D right now.

  • audio sounds weird

  • Hey Jeff pass on a message to good ol’koller for me. Still wanting BC on the PS3, as a 60 gig owner wanting to switch to a slim it is the only thing holding me back.

  • Hi, does this mean my current blu-ray movies will be watchable in 3D thanks to the firmware update or do I need to buy a new collection of blu-ray movies for 3D?

    Thanks

  • Loved CES,

I was a bit disappointed at the lack of release date for the PlayStation Motion Controller though. And no demoing of it, or announced integration with 3D..yet.

Jeff can you tell us if and when we are going to hear about this next, because it seems to have fallen off of the Radar, at least for how important it is.

  • The sound in the video is completely messed up for me, regardless of which browser I use. Only me having this issue?

  • I still want (PS)2D i mean PS2 playback on a PS3? :-(

  • Jeff –

Is there any hope of backwards compatibility of 3D with currently avialble games?

And can you ask John about the UMD conversion program or PSP Go buyers. Sorry or getting off topic there.

  • @24
PSP Go Buyers? Such a thing exists lol. I’ll be surprised if it isn’t swept under the rug before the end of this year.

As far as UMD conversion program, it was canned. So no buy backs, trade-in’s, or anything to that effect. No kiosks either. Not to be the bearer of bad news or anything.

  • My TV says “3D ready” and I have seen 3D movies on blu-ray (Final destination,Volt and UP)
Do I still need to get the glasses or I’m all set up?

    Thank you!

  • Welp…I guess I better start saving up for one of those TVs

I enjoy my PSPgo alot, but the store updates haven’t been as good as I thought before launch and I keep reading news from developers that most are only UMD releases of new PSP games and they’re not forced to be on the store. My go is crying right now.

  • does it need an new hdmi cable (hdmi 1.4)

  • Hey John where’s my GPS for my PSP Slim??? And the Camera, I want to buy it in the US and give our economy the boost. I have found it at PlayAsia.com but it is really useless with out software. And HomeBrew is a bad word in Sony World…

  • I was a bit disappointed to hear you need a “3D TV” – I thought as long as the TV’s refresh rate was high enough to match what the glasses refresh at (divided by 2), then your TV would be capable of displaying 3D content. Forcing everyone to buy a new TV just to have 3D games will only appeal to the early adopters, and the game developers won’t spend the money or resources to go back and patch existing games to work in 3D if there’s not a profitably large enough audience.

  • i just want my GoW3 update…

  • 3D not for me i aready wear glasses how am i sopussed 2 wear another pair to play in 3D?

  • Sorry but 3D sucks. Plus the last thing I need is to see the whole family wearing 3D glasses just to watch a movie. 3D is good for places like Universal Studios Theme Park where it’s used on Terminator 3D Ride. Give me a 55′ LED HDTV, PS3 and a decent surround sound and I’m happy. Next thing you know they’ll make 3D contacts, lol.

  • Whats up with this 3D stuff.

If 3D does come out in masses will 2D HD gamers be forced to buy 3D games at what I am sure going to be a higher price. I can’t see 3d so I wont benefit.

  • Jeff God of War 3 footage , new demo , tv spot and copy signed by the team send it to my house please lol , seriously when we are going to see the new videos? man i cant wait

  • I’ll be interested in buying a 3D TV for gaming when I can get 3D games with face tracking. With both of those, I think you can really be put into the game.

  • I really hate this new push for 3D everything. I’m still calling it a fad that will fade away just like it did twice before when hollywood tried to push it big. 3D is just as gimmicky as motion controls.

  • Sound is pretty messed up.

  • 3D TV is just a lame gimmick.

  • Are 3D games still going to be playable on non-3D TVs, with close to same quality we get now?
or Will there be an option/alternative versions of the same game?

  • 3D Gaming?!?!?!? That’s 2010 technology right there. Jeff, check your audio on that video, it sounds like a Barbie Doll?

  • i hope 3d doesn’t catch on with a Passion and i cant believe people who have just bought hdtv will have to buy another tv just to enjoy 3d

  • @22
You aren’t alone…it’s barely a whisper with audio artifacting. Pretty much unwatchable to me, sad because I was very excited for this video. Is a fix coming soon Jeff?

  • hey jeff why can’t i post comments on the blog from my ps3 any more? I click on the comment box and nothing happens it just jumps back up to the page can you guys please fix this since most of us like to check the blog from our ps3s. thanks

  • Ok my question is if I was to purchase a 3D tv would it still work as a 2D set too? If 3D becomes successful and accepted by consumers this could be an additional 1UP against Micro$oft in my opinion.

  • So thats what you look like.

  • @6….

Didn’t anyone CHECK it before changing the format? Who is on the blog QA team?

  • Video is not viewable via mobile device.
