Calling all LittleBigPlanet CREATORS! Now’s your chance to create fun levels, better the community and be awarded some money – all at the same time.

LBP Obama

A few weeks ago, we teamed up with the MacArthur Foundation, HASTAC, and The Entertainment Software Association with support from our nation’s capital, to host a unique competition to help the youth of America learn more about science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). Now we’re back with more details and looking for members of the LittleBigPlanet community to step up and be a “Game Changer.” If you’re interested, read on and you can earn up to $50,000 and help teach LittleBigPlanet gamers a thing or two about STEM while they play your level(s).

You can head on over to the updated Game Changers Competition details page to get the full download, but in a nutshell:

  • The MacArthur foundation will be accepting submissions for levels / proposals combining an engaging gaming experience with principals of STEM learning.
  • There are 10 different categories, where winning submissions can earn up to $50,000 in production / development grants.
  • Judging will be based on the different categories combined with the potential of level design, with consideration to quality, integration of learning content, playability, fun, aesthetics and more.

The competition registration site will open for submissions on January 15, so make sure to start the thinking about your level designs and ways to integrate the fun of LittleBigPlanet with science, technology, engineering, and math.

  • I haven’t tried making a level yet, but this may entice me to do so =)

  • do you guys relize how hard it is to make 1 i’v tried and failed ok its hard you got to be really creative ok and make new cars and stuff its hard and it hurts ur head if you want to see my lvls you can just add me

  • america only right?

  • Sweet, I wanna enter… We can use all of the DLC packs, right? Just making sure. That adds more options for creativity and entertainment.

  • will the contest be available to players outside of the US?

  • Can I automatically win this time

  • always wonder why 1 huge prize instead of many smaller prizes. You please more ppl with a setup like 1000 for runner ups, 2000 for 2nd and 5000 for first choice or something similar. If thats how this is then excuse me… :p

  • Can the contest include STEM podcast specials? lol… Better check the rules! :)

  • Is this just America only or can people from other countries join in?

  • hey Mm..that CAP would look FANTASTIC with a GOWN..im guessin that would be something in the works huh..it would look pretty kool :p

  • Education FTW!

  • Guys look at it, most of you are missing the point, you need to make something game breakingly logical for the competition.

  • i would enter but i can’t find a 120gb PS3 anywhere…

When will the new 120gb PS3 shipments be in.

  • This is SO weird! Just the other day I was thinking “You know, I could really use $50,000.”

Unfortunately, I absolutely could not stand the LBP creation system- the nuts, bolts, levers and connecting system just drove me crazy. (Want to detach this from that? Well, then you’re going to have everything else detached too!)

  • i’m not sure if this would remove us from seventh place in the rank of nations’ preparedness to benefit from advances in information technology. the legendary Bell Labs where laser and transistor were born and home to many Nobel laureates has been sold to a french firm. there’s also less graduates going for a degree in engineering. maybe if we funded education vs. war, we’d get somewhere.

  • Standing by and ready to help kids learn :)

  • People, click the links in the post (like to “Game Changers Competition details page” and to “The competition registration site”) so you’ll know what you’re doing. That’s what they’re there for, and you’ll have your answers! Don’t get busy building levels; they’re looking for PROPOSALS for levels!

  • Several folks have asked, so let me clearly state that the competition is INTERNATIONAL (as Mark Valledor also said above). It is open to submissions from anywhere on the planet. (Applicants outside the U.S. do need to have institutional backing to legal purposes, though.)

The first phase of the competition closes Jan 22, but it only requires a 300-word description so if you’ve got an idea you should pitch it!

  • Wow, this is really cool. Makes me wish I had a better grasp on creating, guess theres no time like the now to practice :)

  • So basically, a School leason converted to a LBP Level?
