White Knight Chronicles: Why You’ll Want to Play Online

Jeff Rubenstein's Avatar + Posted by Jeff Rubenstein on Jan 19, 2010 // Sr. Social Media Manager

We’ve been talking about White Knight Chronicles for so long, that it’s actually a bit hard for me to believe that it’s only 2 weeks from hitting stores. But [checks calendar], that is indeed the case! A few days ago, we held a media event in San Francisco to allow reporters hands-on time with the online portion of the game in a team setting. You can find impressions here, here, here, and many other places as well.

I also sat down with US Producer Tsubasa Inaba to talk ask how robust the online feature set is with White Knight Chronicles.

I can’t think of another RPG whose online modes (if they even exist!) are so intertwined with the solo campaign, and so I can personally see myself investing a lot of time there in just two weeks. Also, we hope you’ve been enjoying the tutorial videos – a third one (featuring a dissection of the character creation options) will be debuting soon.

…and by saying go play an WRPG, do you mean go play a game that has some actual innovation, half-decent graphics, and not the exact same battle/inventory/character systems that we’ve seen in every JRPG since the dawn of gaming?

Well then…okay.

Having limited save options adds strategy to the game. If you have too much “life” going on to play JRPGs, feel free to play something else. Adding the ability to save anywhere in the remakes of the original FF took a lot of the challenge out of it, took away from it’s epicness.

“Innovative” seems to be a popular catch word this gen. Devs are “innovating” games straight into the toilet. The most loved and purchased games this gen have little to no real innovation. Just tighter controls and a better coat of paint.

Oh yeah, and what has innovated in the WRPG genre this gen? Battle mechanics? No. Leveling? No. Story? Hell no. Customization? Maybe. Nothing to write home about.

Why do you see the same things in JRPGs over and over again? Because they WORK. Why fix something that isn’t broken? Why exchange a “tried and true” method with “a shot in the dark” method? You don’t. You improve on what works and add to the experience, not “innovate” it into something it’s not.

I’ll be glad when this fad of “let’s make everything into something else” and “it’s not good unless it has something innovative” is over. Geez….

This game differs from Demon’s Souls so can’t really compare em.I think the way Demon’s Souls multiplayer is designed is well, yeah they want you to help people but to be truthful they don’t want you to be that good of buddies so you won’t feel regret after you stab that guy in the back for his souls ;-P hehehe!

Can you take that writing at the top of the screen when you play the game off?
Like when you attack, it shows like damage 32, and other stuff? Can you disable that?

There wasn’t a really good explanation of how easy it will be to join up with friends, or whether or not there would be a lvl gap that disallow friends from joining a quest with you. But I have to say that was a great interview, i’m very excited for the game.
