LittleBigPlanet: Sack it to Me – The “Sackboy for Haiti” Edition

Mark Valledor's Avatar + Posted by Mark Valledor on Jan 29, 2010 // Marketing Manager, SCEA

Tons of new info on this post, so we’ll try to keep it short:

Sackboy for Haiti

In an effort to contribute to Haiti relief, we’ve teamed up with our friends over at IGN.com and we’re auctioning off set of a Sackboy hands. These are the same hands used in our latest LBP PSP launch trailer.

LittleBigPlanet (PSP) Updates

We know tons of you were waiting for this, so we’re pleased to update all our LBP (PSP) creators with some new DLC.

LBP PSP Update

Update (FREE – Required) – First things first — before accessing any new DLC on your PSP, be sure to get the latest LBP update (either directly through your XMB–wifi required–or through the PlayStation Store).

LBP PSP Sack that Time Forgot LBP PSP Garden Costumes LBP PSP Gardens Theme

The Sack that Time forgot Theme ($2.99) – If you’re itching to create levels that take Sackboy back to prehistoric days, this pack’s for you. The pack is filled with four new costumes and 12 themed stickers. Click here for more info.

Gardens Costumes (FREE) – Get your Sack-mits on the latest fashions from the familiar Gardens levels from the PS3 version.

Gardens Theme ($2.99) – The refreshing smell of the morning garden can’t match all the goodies found in the Gardens Theme. Tons of Create materials and even more stickers will help you build Sackboy’s adventures with the original LBP Gardens Level materials.

LittleBigPlanet (PS3) Updates

LBP PS3 Groundhog Day Costumes

Groundhog Day Costumes – Popping its head out of the ground for another year is the free Groundhog Day costume. It’ll only be up for one week only, so you better head on over and download it now!

White Knight Chronicles announcement – If you missed yesterday’s White Knight Chronicles post, head on over and get a glimpse of four new DLC costumes coming in February.

Around the Web

Sackies “Level of the Year” Announced – Congrats to DarknessBear on winning the final Sackies award – Level of the Year!

“Game Changer” Update – For those of you still tinkering around with your $50,000 idea, head on over to the updated Game Changers site. They’ve just opened up a public commenting area where applicants are encouraged to seek partnerships with other applicants that make either/both proposed projects stronger. As you know, sharing is caring, but hurry — applications are due by February 15.

Contraption Challenge #9 – Over on the EU forums, they’re voting on the “Contraption Challenge #9,” challenging players to create a gap-crossing vehicle. Here’s a glimpse of the contraption finalists…pretty creative stuff.

Community Picks

This week’s community picks are from the good folks over at LittleBigLand.com.

I have never even played this game either the PS3 or psp edition but I would lot try it. I had a chance to win the ps3 one from a RewardTV auction but I was outbid.

This is probably one of the only games that is constantly updated with downloads. That really good to see hopely their will be more games that follow this strategy.

You know what’d be awesome? (on Sony’s part of course) If Sony had some little sale on PSN with a handful of items like LBP costumes, downloadable games, dlc etc at either normal or reduced price and donate all the proceeds to the Haiti effort.

I bet a lot of people would be on board to throw some money at the cause with a little dlc as an incentive.

Mark,

I have to congratulate you. Since June I harassed you about Sackboy plush dolls because my wife was pregnant and due this February (22nd to be exact – or as exact as that voodoo due date science is) and you promised me it would happen. True to your word they are available on Amazon.

But they seem to be stuck in a never ending pre-order status. Some people in the comments mention having gotten them, so it seems odd. I was curious if you had any insight on this. Is it just a supply issue or some form of legitimate delay in releasing them? Are they possible to get elsewhere in the US that I just haven’t managed to find?

I am not in a huge rush to get them right now, since one look tells me these are in the 3+ age range (due to the zippers and eyes – the things a soon to be parent begins noticing), so there is no sense of rush on my end anymore. You were true to your word and met the date I requested (can you talk to the Gran Turismo team?) and now I am just waiting on Amazon and/or the manufacturer.

Thanks again.

    Thanks for the note.

I\’ll check in to see when Senario will have more plushies on Amazon. I know they\’re working on more. Also know that there are some UK sackboys floating around (ebay?)

still no word on the Ratchet and Clank dlc for LBP on the ps3? I was really looking forward to that. The MGS and Pirates levels were cool, and the Ratchet and Clank ones would have been awesome as well.

I have a question- Is this PSP DLC a limited time offer? Or will it stay forever? Just curious, because I know some of the PS3 DLC is only available for a limited time, and I have neither a PSP or LBP yet, so just wondering if I need to download it and keep it handy on my PS3.

Also, will any other future DLC be only offered for a limited time? Just want to know whether to check the PSP content like a hawk like I do for the PS3. Thanks!

Ok so you guys plan to help Haiti by actioning a item that starts at US $182.50 bid?

Are you guys kidding or the plan is to send them a a couple of happy meals?

Really… if you guys want to use the Haiti tragedy to promote your brands do it for real on par with the money you guys make by selling thousands upon thousands of silly 2.99 items in hours.

Here is a idea so you guys can justify that noise and use of such a tragedy for a propose that actually means something to them.

Instead of putting a couple of “rare items” for sale, do a set of LBP cloths that you guys can produce in a couple of hours that would cost nothing and put them for sale on the PS Store where all the money from those sales is reverted to the victims of the tragedy in Haiti.

20

+ bluedice on January 30th, 2010 at 2:08 am said:

In days you guys would have thousands upon thousands of dollars to send to them, something that would actually make a difference.

In fact Sony should already have taken that initiative and do a “PS Store for Haiti Day” where a percentage of all the sales are reverted to the victims of Haiti. Even McDonalds does that for victims of cancer and they spend real money to put those sandwiches on their shelves. Your distribution costs are way lower and involve way less people and yet you guys are incapable of coming up with such a brilliant idea.

Not that I think you guys are doing nothing, but I just think it’s too much of a small action for the market you guys are and the money involved. Specially since it’s SONY we are talking here a giant corporation that does billions a year.

21

+ bluedice on January 30th, 2010 at 2:08 am said:

It’s simple math. There are currently around ~27 millions of PS3 units sold, let’s assume 10% of those units are connected to internet and with wallets set. Anyone that buys a PS3 can spend 3 bucks according to Sony’s own philosophy, so assuming those 10% would like to help, you get (27000000*0.1)*2.99 = ~8,000,000. 8 millions would be something already.

Expand that to video download services with partnerships with film studios/distribution companies like Warner, New Line, Fox and you guys can triple that amount easily. It’s all for a good cause.

22

+ bluedice on January 30th, 2010 at 2:09 am said:

It’s just a matter of little effort from the giants ;)

23

+ Ryuhza on January 30th, 2010 at 4:02 am said:

…So, since you seem to be making the stuff from LBP PS3 available for PSP… maybe you can also do vice versa, hmm?

*is still jealous*

bluedice and hush404 just blew this thread out of the water (comment # 5, 19-22). Any official responses to comments other than theirs would be trivial and inadequate.

Here’s another suggestion for Sony: How about a Haiti relief avatar sale? For a few dollars you buy a red cross avatar or something. All proceeds go to Haiti. It would be easy to implement and when people on your psn friends list see that you’re rocking a Haiti Relief avatar, it might inspire them to donate as well.

Keep up the great work Sony…we are expecting something more substantial though, and as bluedice mentioned, it’s so easy for you to do with your infrastructure. So how about it, Sony?

2.they give enough for the money that you give them on ps3 you can buy a sticker pack for 2.99 and get about fifty stickers
3. bolts dont even stay in place.
4.you cant get rid of the grid
5. teh brush feature which sucks and only has a circle and a square AND YOU HAVE TO USE A BLEEPIN GRID!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
6.NO MULTIPLAYER THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT LBP IS ABOUT when i play lbp psp every once in and realize you cant slap anyone cuz THERES NO MULTIPLAYER AND U CANT SLAP.

They never reply to serious talk in here, it’s all about marketing and small talk for teens. I think they don’t like when adults start to talk.

Anyway it’s a shame that this kind of marketing does work for kids bad at math and that companies like Sony keep using it to make more profit.
