MAG Developer Tips: Suppression

Jeremy Dunham's Avatar + Posted by Jeremy Dunham on Feb 08, 2010 // Sr. Community Manager, Zipper Interactive

Now that MAG is roughly two weeks old and players have familiarized themselves with the game and its mechanics, we’ve decided to help all of you take the next step towards becoming MAG superstars. Specifically, every day over the next three weeks we’ll be offering a bevy of developer facts and strategies from the team right here at Zipper Interactive. With inside info like that, you can expect to learn plenty of tips, tricks and tactics that should make you all the more prepared for becoming masters of MAG’s game modes, character classes and leadership roles.

First up, is a closer look at the game mode Suppression as explained by lead designer, CJ Heine. Watch this introductory video first, and then look for CJ’s tips listed directly afterward.

Hey everyone, this is CJ Heine from Zipper and I’m here to give you some valuable info on how to maximize your time in Suppression.

Basic Tips

For players that are new to MAG, Suppression is one of the first game types they can play – keep these things in mind as you get your feet wet:

  • Wins and losses in Suppression do not count in the Shadow War, but you may also find Suppression missions less stressful because you don’t have to worry about impacting the war as you learn the game.
  • Remember to stick with your squad. You will improve your survivability while learning how to fight alongside your team.
  • There are no vehicles or objectives to repair in Suppression, so modify your loadout appropriately (no need for the Repair Kit or Anti-tank Mines).
  • Learn the locations of the Resupply Points as they’ll refill your health and ammo, so knowing the way back to these quickly will keep you alive longer. They also tend to be player magnets, and can often become the center of combat.
  • Most default loadouts contain a First Aid Kit, so practice using this on yourself when your health gets too low. If you have upgraded to the Medical Kit or have the Resuscitation skill, seek out wounded allies and try healing them.
  • Don’t bleed out if you’ve been killed! Get familiar with the incapacitation and bleedout mechanics in Suppression, and see if there is anyone available to revive you before you choose to respawn.

Advanced Tips

  • Go easy on the low level guys! They’re in Suppression trying to learn and gain their first few levels. You are all in the same PMC, and taking the time to help them and answer their questions could make the difference down the road in a Shadow War mission.
  • Suppression is a great place to experiment with your new skill unlocks. The Suppression missions are small and time to combat is quick, making them a great source for practice targets. Use this closed environment to experiment with things like anti-personnel mines, items from the Electronics skill tree, new weapon upgrades, etc.
  • Right on the edge of your next player level but short on time? Often times, it’s faster to play a quick Suppression match instead of a full Shadow War mission for that last bit of needed experience.

Thanks for the help CJ! We’ll be back again tomorrow with Producer Alan Van Slyke’s tips for Sabotage – see you then.

I have to say that this is one of the best online shooetrs ever the team work is impressive and the skill tree is great,I hear so much about how sver rocks the battles but try facing down a valor squad who carrys a heavy machine gun or a raven who snipes u with a shotgun then complian but i wont u take the good with the bad as for the training goes there should be more on the leader trianing. going into battle with a first time squad leader is not fun and even i have been in that spot before if it wasnt for my clan i still wouldnt know about how to cdall in strikes or set fragos but the comand structure is still great the best thing over any online shooter is the communcation and with the objectives set but ur comandeers its gives a more realism to war gaming….good luck to all the PMC’s and hope to shoot you in the battles to come

the games a dud shut up and move on already….SOCOM 4 anyone?

you know why Zipper is still tinkering with this game? because it was half azz’d to begin with, 9 maps…very little weapons…bad graphics…and $60 price tag….I can smell a sequel coming…either that or a tremendous amount of dlc…the game doesnt have enough content to sell for $60…it has less content then Confrontation which is pathetic

make Socom 4 or give up

For the trophies, other regions list the game as ‘Massive Action Game’ and for N.A. as M.A.G. When comparing with friends or people of different regions, they’re not comparable. Will this be fixed?

Just wondering, any chances of the stats issues being fixed? i am missing several ribbons and medals that i have earned in game, and some aren’t awarded when the criteria is reached, ie: the silver cross medal i think it is, heal 10000 units of damage over a career, i have 13000 odd, also i have several ‘kill 3 enemies at over 120m in one game’ ribbons, yet my stats say i have 0 kills at 120m.
that, and the server issues where i keep getting disconnected from the game universe, yet i can connect to anything else, and also as noted in other comments the S.V.E.R. maps seem unblanaced.

Thanks :)

First of all…all my friends are in love with this game.I also want you to know,I have the PS home that came with preorder at amazon.Guys, what an experience being in the Sver Barracks, listening to the Music from the game and seeing your tank drive by.
Seeing those planes zip through the sky and decorating one of the rooms with a wall of computors to try and get that feel of A or B control room…Also..the sky line is incredible.I have NO complaints except need more instruction on being Squad leader and such.lol..Would LOVE to have a video of game play showing someone using the CNI and stopping to explain why they did this and how.
I commend you whole heartily. The way you guys are so immersed in the community on fixes and stuff..and you actually tell us what your working on…
Hurrah….

What did it for my frinds who WERE playing those couple of other titles?
Medic. The team work.Knowing you cannot do this alone…makes you feel a part of something…All of them said almost the same thing.

Drop by the barracks sometimes Zipper if your ever on home.

I just wanna say I love MAG.. Butit took about 5 games on each game type to figure out what actually needs to be done in order to win… And I still don’t get domination at all… There needs to be something that shows people what is required to win each game type so they know before hand

ps. SVER is the best!!

I love this game makes COD map look like a little ant.. But i do have a quick question are u going to give the groups a little more perks like with S.V.E.R i know there like a low funding group would u give them a perk like when they pick up a enemy weapon it would be in there armory but only if they have it at the end of the game ? or with raven hi tech monk’s give them a perk to cloak for a sort period of time just a question i had to ask and u guys did an awesome job with the game i haven’t had much problems with the game like i do with the COD games where people are glitching to win i like the fact no glitching and no Lag best game ever

Why is this being strung out over three weeks? This game is WOEFULLY lacking in proper documentation, especially in regards to leadership mechanics. This should be released in its entirety as soon as possible, and it should be directly patched into the game, to ensure all players have access to it, not just PS Blog readers.

I am continually flabbergasted why Zipper would work their tails off to include such complexity into its game, and then fail to document most of it. You essentially need to hear about most things word-of-mouth while playing, or randomly stumble across it.

+ zondervan on February 9th, 2010 at 7:36 am said:

I just have to say this or my head will explode. I’m a pretty smart player, I take vehicle (forward spawn points) and place them in secure locations where they are safe from turret fire but can still fire upon the enemy maps and provide cover for those spawning. SO I park the vehicles and either use the turret or move on into the base. Two seconds later, an idiot is trying to drive the tanks and honeybaggers like its grand theft auto. IF YOU SEE A VEHICLE THAT LOOKS HIDDEN, CLOSE TO ANY ENEMY BASE, LEAVE IT THERE!!!

Mag is the cream of the crop when it comes to online play.IMO.

Also, this game is not hard to play and learn. Many of you are asking for more tips and help to try and play this game. If you would just take the time to read the training tab you should have no problems. It explains everything you need to know!!

Awesome Game!

Would love some new maps and game variations. Any time frame for this?

Also what is the Green Flag next to the PMC list. You have the Yellow Circle on Red, The White Stars on Blue, and the Green Flag.

Also can you explain “winning” the contract? That means you get those perks for the next round?

Can the congratulatory voice be turned off for domination after hearing it. It plays every time and I know she is pleased and that it is no easy feat to please her.

MAG is awesome… I’m hooked on this game like no other… It has actually changed the way I play as well. At first, I was about killing… my k/d ratio was over 1 and the team won a lot, but I wasn’t getting any ribbons… well now I have 23 ribbons and my k/d ration is down to 0.78 but I am making a bigger difference and we win pretty much every time, 50 major victories to 5 major defeats, lol. Now, I don’t care if I die so long as I get that last repair tick on the bunker before I pass away… I freakin love this game, we just need more battlefields… being an unreal tournament fan, I am a little spoiled when it comes to having a lot of maps to choose fromm. Well done Zipper and I hope that this is the beginning of a successful franchise

MAG is a great game. I really like the way you can build your character up. It really gives it a huge advantage over other first person shooters. BUT… the respawn time or the running to the battle distance needs to be reduced, a lot. I agree there should be a respawn time but it is to lengthy and you spend the whole time waiting to be respawned and running back into the battle.

77

+ Strombole on February 9th, 2010 at 10:59 am said:

To those who have complained about respawn time and running to objective, play the game a little more… 15 seconds is NOT a long wait and it is like that so that your team spawns in waves… so you spawn with other squad members… so they are with you…. together as a team… with each other for support…. get it.
And the running to the objective… well its punishment for losing your bunker… so the attackers can move up the battlelines…. understand? And in Sabo its like that to give you a variety of ways to the objective for purposes of flanking, seting up a perimeter, etc. And with my record defending, you attackers should be happy for the space considering we usually have you pinned so far back to where u spawn that u can barely get out of your spawn, lol. And you wanna be closer?

Is the score measured in Kills or Downs? In other words, is it bad to resuscitate someone who’s just going to die again, or do you actually have to finish someone off to get the point?

Can you only play suppression on 1 map? I’ve only been able to play it on the first map you get at level 1. Supression is usually the most popular game type so i don’t understand why there is only 1 map. MW2 most popular is Team deathmatch (suppression). All Socom most popular game type was also suppression.

I have found a solution to the balance issue for those on Raven and Valor. Boycott SVER in Domination, or if they are defending in other game modes, if you play for another faction. If you get into such a game with SVER, leave the game until you get a game playing against Valor or Raven.

I’ve been doing this for a few days with my friends and have been enjoying some great games by just pretending only two factions exist. There is no SVER in my MAG world, it’s just Valor vs. Raven.

I don’t always win, and I don’t always lose, but I always feel like I have a fighting chance where against SVER it’s very rarely the case, except perhaps defending as Raven on aquisition.

@91, stop crying and believing drama put out there by kids…. 1-2 reasons why lots of gamers chose S.V.E.R.
1. most real gamers are the first to pick up new games no matter the reviews and start playing.2 they different from non-gamers/gamers true gamers are like
cpu geeks/hackers/IT support/creative/420 type folks…..Valor(US)/RAVEN(EUR) represent the “MAN”/”Big Brother”… S.V.E.R.(underdogs/people of color/diff nationalites relate) are the rebels fighting for the cause….. so when starting out these “Tru Gamers” went this route, THEN will chose another, then maybe another then finally will decide to stick with 1….. stop crying
