MAG Developer Tips: Sabotage

Jeremy Dunham's Avatar + Posted by Jeremy Dunham on Feb 09, 2010 // Sr. Community Manager, Zipper Interactive

Following up on yesterday’s tips for Suppression, we’re back again today with more tips and tricks for the next mode players encounter — Sabotage!

Our instructor for today is Producer Alan Van Slyke. Alan has been on the MAG team since the beginning and has been integral in making MAG what it is today, so you should definitely follow his advice. But first: a video explanation of Sabotage from Alan himself…

“Hey everyone, Sabotage is the first mode available in MAG that pits you against another PMC for control of the Shadow War. It’s one of the most accessible game types as it only requires you to secure three objectives for victory. Follow these guidelines, and you’re sure to do your part!”

Basic Tips

  • Squad cohesion is important. There are multiple approach routes as an attacker, so talk to and follow your squad leader and steamroll the opposition as a unit.
  • Having problems getting your squad to A or B objectives? Two or three medics per squad can pick up any fallen teammates along the way, which keeps the squad together on approach.
  • The faction that typically prevails in Sabotage is the one that’s willing to make a focused charge at the objective. Sustained firefights at 100 meters from the objective as an attacker may give you a nice kill/death ratio, but will more often than not, result in your loss.
  • If you have a headset, let your squadmates know about the guy under the stairs or in the church tower (yes, I hate that guy too). If you don’t have a headset, listen for callouts from your team.
  • FRAGOs mean double points. They’re set by your squad leader as a mechanism to give the squad a unified goal and provide double XP when you’re in the FRAGO’s vicinity. If you’re interested in getting more points, these will get you there fast.

Advanced Tips

  • On approach as an attacker, drop smoke grenades about 80-100 meters from A or B. This will get your full squad to within striking distance where you can regroup and make the final push to the objective.
  • All final C objective buildings have front entrances (attackers) and rear entrances (defender). A few attackers can often flank C towards the back to disrupt the defender’s spawn into the final objective building. This provides a critical opportunity to secure the final objective. Ten seconds of spawn wave disruption can often result in an Attacker’s victory.
  • Poison Gas and Frag grenades are great ways to clear Sabotage objective buildings of enemies. Poison does nasty proximity damage over time and Frag grenades can insta-kill if they’re too close – this provides a huge additional bonus in that fragged enemies can’t be revived and must travel back to the objective from the spawn point.

Thanks Alan! We’ll return tomorrow with Acquisition tips from designer Joe Maris.

Cheers.

hold up @2 wouldn’t you say your comment is ironic…

your criticizing a new game about being laggy. when your playing a game that was laggy when it came out.

@2

Turn off your caps lock if you want anyone to take you seriously.

When you say a few attackers should go to the back of C.. would it work just as well if you had a whole squad from one platoon?

I love mag.. Tryin to ballance time between it and modern warfare 2… Idk if it’s working.. Sabotage is really fun, but you need more teamwork in this game than any of the others… So hope you got a good squad with mics assault rifles and med kits

I love sabotage but it’s a necessity that you go in with at least half your squad being people you know, otherwise you’re just going to end up with idiots who have no idea what to do.

@ANYONE THAT DISAGREES ABOUT MY COMMENT AND THINKS MY “CAPS” IS ANNOYING- OOH WELL >:P..SOCOM C..WAS LAGGY AND ITS WORKING WAY BETTER NOW.. ESPECIALLY WITH THE LONG AWAITED YET SATISFIED MAPS.AS FOR THE MAG AMAZING 256 PLAYERS…LAST TIME I CHECKED THATS HOW MUCH A ROOM ON SOCOM HOLDS…BESIDES I DONT NEED TO HEAR THE OTHER 240 PLAYERS BATTLE.IM ALSO SURE MANY OF YOU NOTICED THE MAPS ARE NOT VEHICLE FRIENDLY..IN OTHER WORDS TOO SMALL 4 THEM. ANYWHO..THATS MY OPINION..U DONT HAVE TO TAKE ME SERIOUS JUST BECAUSE I LOVE TO KEEP MY CAPS ON..LOL BUT AGAIN IMO THIS GAME SUCKS! SOCOM AND CODMW2 STILL ON TOP! DUCES!

Caps boy…on the interwebs it is a common courtesy to not post in caps. It is hard to read, annoying, and childish.

Anyways, Socom Confrontation was decent, but that is it. Games are no where near as big or as coordinated. It took slant 6 far to long to fix the issues. MAG is not laggy, works perfectly with 256 players. You only hear 8 people on your mic at any given time. So obviously you haven’t played the game.

You can get an APC or Jeep anywhere on the main roads of maps or to any objective. Sure you cannot weasel your way with an APC to be right behind a bunker. That is for a reason. If you can;t handle all of the stimuli in MAG then stick to the Arcade shooter MW2.

Hey Zipper,

Just want to let all of you guys know I really appreciate the efforts behind MAG.

It’s the only FPS I’ve played since Modern Warfare 1 where it had the guts to try something different.

And not only is it a breath of fresh air, it all just WORKS (really didn’t want to sound like a MAC advert there).
You guys are clearly THE guys when it comes to designing a tactical and satisfying shooter.

So to cut it shot: I love the game, thanks.

And thanks for the tips too, I’m always that guy trying to sneak to their spawn when attacking C to slow them down :D
However on Valor base, even if I make it in, thanks to catwalks which cause great distraction (as I always have to check if someone is there), I get pwned straight away :(

Valor base is pretty damn difficult.

So maybe you would like to give base speicifc
tutorials / tips?

nycfrewill82, what’s the 82 in your screen name for? It definitely isn’t your birth year judging by your comments…

Anyway these are good tips! This game is great with a good squad, even better the further you rank up!

lol @2, how cheap is your internet connection? And Slant Six sucks, wait ’til Zipper picks up the SOCOM franchise back.

+ Azure-Edge on February 9th, 2010 at 4:26 pm said:

TakiFuGu, if you aren’t going to buy it at full price then you probably won’t buy it at all. What is with all these people wanting games at half price?

Hats off to Zipper, Mag is a great game. Now when /6 goes out of business, can you please take back the Socom franchise??? Shame on Sony for making the decision to let /6 ruin such a once great series. Zipper rocks!!!

@nYcFrEeWiLL82 its your friend internet connection that was the problem I played MAG allot and I have NEVER lag on it that or from your other posts it seems like you have never played MAG at all

+ TenaciousMoses on February 9th, 2010 at 4:42 pm said:

Shadowrun by FASA was an online shooter that should have been $30 or $40 dollars because of its craptastic, lackluster features. MAG features, on the other hand, are robust and you can see Zipper put a lot of work into the game. It’s worth $60 in my opinion, which will give Zipper the fuel to keep updating the game with cheap DLC and patches.

Hello,I’m new to the whole MAG online thing.Have to say, that I like it a lot.The only thing that I do not like is that when I’m shot, some players will just stand over you and watch you bleed out, the bad thing is that they are on your team.

+ XgargunoX on February 9th, 2010 at 5:19 pm said:

@22

If Sony didn’t hand SOCOM to /6, Zipper wouldn’t have been able to work on MAG.

Good management by Sony as I think they let the best guys do the job for MAG.
Although admittedly even better management would have given SOCOM to more capable hands but oh well, you can’t win ‘em all, I’m just glad MAG is so good and I doubt anyone other than Zipper could have done it.

@nYcFrEeWiLL82 Wow you must have an even crappier internet connection than mine. And mine run at 68kb/s and I still don’t get lag even in the 256 player matches.

Anyways, this game is fantastic. Teamwork is a must and it works 90% of the time. Great job guys!

I’m looking forward to playing this game as it’s always the tactics and strategy that interest me. Hopefully the game will be rewarding enough for strategists that I won’t be disspointed by squading up with 128 rambos.
