Thank You for a Great 2009

Happy new year PlayStation Nation,

2009 was a great success for the PlayStation brand in a market that continues to be impacted by a down economy. I wanted to thank you for making this past year the best yet for the PS3.

According to NPD’s recent Top Global Markets report, PlayStation was the only company to see consumers in three territories (UK, US and Japan) spending 15% more on PS3 software in 2009 than they did in 2008 – this is while the category as a whole experienced a 9% decline in software sales. The PS3 was also the only console in the U.S. to see double-digit growth in sales this past quarter. December also marked the best sales month in the platform’s history, breaking one million hardware units and 7.3 million software units. We’re nowhere near slowing down in the new year as today’s NPD numbers show a 36% sales increase on PS3 hardware when compared to last January. This is truly remarkable given the tight inventory we’ve been experiencing as a result of high consumer demand since last Fall.

Games like UNCHARTED 2: Among Thieves are surpassing our lofty expectations as it outsold the franchise’s first PS3 game and is now closing in on three million copies sold worldwide. Over half a million of you have already chosen your allegiance in MAG, and have played over 270,000 games in the Shadow War.

We’ve also successfully established that we’re not just a disc-based powerhouse, but we’re also a digital powerhouse. PlayStation Network experienced huge growth last year, marking its best revenue month in December – a 155% increase in sales from the previous year. More than 40 million of you all over the world are coming to PlayStation Network to access multimedia content and to enhance your social gaming experiences.

It truly is a great time to be a PS3 owner as we have so much more in store this year. We’ve already come out of the gates with MAG, White Knight Chronicles, BioShock 2 and we have an onslaught of new IP and blockbuster games just around the corner with Heavy Rain, God of War III, and Final Fantasy XIII… not to mention the many other games we’re keeping up our sleeves. We’re also bringing groundbreaking technology to the masses with the launches of 3D gaming and the new motion controller later this year. We know both will open entirely new doors for you to enhance your gaming experiences and will provide new ways for you to think about interactive entertainment.

Thank you again for making PS3 your entertainment device of choice. We look forward to your continued excitement for the brand.

  • Nice moves, keep doing it. Will you focus more into Latin America Market(México)? It suprise me to see for the firs time TV ads. In prime time. it make me proud of My Playstation 3.

  • Happy to be a PS3 owner. Still sporting my 60GB launch PS3! I knew PS3 was going to be the best next gen platform, and last year was a shining moment for the platform.

I hope to see even more new IPs, and exclusive games to truly show off the power of the PS3. Ports Do Not show anything off.
Blockbuster exclusives, Blu Ray, and a free PSN is what will keep you on top.

Only thing I can suggest adding is improving the community. Like Playfire type website, with Gamercards and such. Viewable on PS3 browser as well. Browser needs compatibility improvement.

    Keep up the great work!

now can we have the release date of GT5? :)

  • I was a Nintendo fan up until Final Fantasy VII, that is when I made the move to Sony – I have been here ever since! I would not bend a knee to M$ because they had a game or two I wanted to play – it matters not because they eventually came over to Sony, like I knew they would! My faith in this company has never wavered and I will be here until I am placed in a retirement home – I’ll still rock the controller even with my arthritis!

Keep it real and you’ll keep me as a customer!

  • sounds like I’m reading a press conference, lmao! But in all honesty it has been a good year. Here’s to 2010 Jack!

  • UR WELCOME JACK! and thank you too for steering the playstation brand back into its rightful position of being the worlds number one home entertainment brand.

  • I’m all for the hoopla about the PS3, but I’m with the ONE GUY who said something that counts here. Where’s the PSP love? All that from Jack and not one mention of the thing.

I WANT TO GIVE YOU MY MONEY. Just put GAMES on the PSN, for the same price I can pay in the store. I have a 3000, I just don’t want to screw myself into having to rebuy everything if I get a GO or some new one that doesn’t have UMD.

Please, don’t forget about the system you insist is a priority, but clearly isn’t. PSP games, please!

  • Hooray, I love you PlayStation, ever since the PSOne c:

  • ur welcome Jack Tretton, 2010 will be even BETTER than 2009

  • Well, how good of a time it is is really dependent on how you’re doing for time and money. I, with very little of both, am drowning in awesome games. Have mercy- don’t pummel me with any more goodness- I simply can’t take anymore.

  • You’re welcome? :) Glad.

  • Those words actually sound like they are coming from Jack Trettons mouth and not some other person writing this for him haha!

This is good news! Keep it up SONY!

    SONY….MAKE.BELIEVE

  • I’ve been with playstation since PS1, and I’m very happy with my PS3. Now please get Mass Effect for the PS3.

  • You’re welcome.

  • No mention of the PSP’s complete faceplant in 2009.

How long do we have to wait till you start releasing everything digital and disk day and date with eachother and stop trying to charge $40 for downloadable PSP games?

  • Seriously I have a PSP Go and hardly buy anything for it.

Charging $7 for $2 iphone games is stupid. Charging $40 for the downloadable version of LBP is stupid, charging $250 for the Go is stupid, No video Store for Canada Still is stupid.

Give me some good properly priced content for my PSP Go already.

  • @11
    You’re welcome Jack.
Now Please have a sit down with Ubisoft so we can get some Splinter Cell: Conviction goodness.

  • Congatulations on an awesome 2009 and an even better 2010! I was hoping you guys could have a future firmware update for the ps3 where we can listen to music while playing games. please respond.

  • As part of the “thank you” blog, perhaps we loyal PS3 fans could’ve been rewarded with something.

  • Thank you SCE for bringing out such a great quality product! Here to another great year!

  • I don’t know if I can take a 2010 like 2009. The hits just keep on coming! I don’t remember a year like 09 where you really have to choose between some really great games. No time to win them all. I’m glad Sony made some key decisions some of them with a lot of risk (price cuts etc). It is paying off. We all are probably thinking “told you so” as we begged for price cuts. :)

  • You’re welcome.

What exclusive games are coming after God of War 3 releases? I haven’t heard any new ones, besides Killzone 3 rumor.

  • No, thank YOU, Mr. President!

    WE RULE!!!

  • Been with the brand since day 1. PlayStation for life.

  • Man, some of these replies are hilarious.

“Thank you so much sir!! I love you so much”.

    hahahaha, to much, to much!

I love PS as much as the next guy, but man, talk about over the top. LoL

  • No need to thank us, we should thank you. you sdid this all for us, we are just accepting it for you.

    THANK YOU!

  • Thank You Mr. Tretton and the amazing company that is Sony. 2009 rocked and 2010 is going to be so much better. Just off of GOW 3 and Heavy Rain alone. Can’t wait to try out the motion controller later this year. Also can’t wait to see what’s up the company sleeves, usually when Sony says this it is something awesome. The surprises at E3 are going to rock, can’t wait to see what you guys have to show.

  • Dear Jack…

How about some support for people that bought your hardware for the same amount as those in the US that get NONE of the expanded service…Canada. You know…part of SCEA’s mandate.

How about keeping ONE exclusive this generation from going multiplatform. I truly think it hurts your brand to see something like FFXIII not only go multiplatform…but to have it involved in special deals only available on that other platform is shameful for your brand image.

Also…fix your DRM issue with the video store. I now own 3 PS3 systems and it is completely ridiculous that I can’t switch my BOUGHT content from one to the next. You expect to roll out PSN to Bravia TVs and BD boxes … consumers are not going to rebuy digital content over and over.

Name your motion controller…doesn’t matter if it is a temp name but name it. NATAL is getting the press because it has a feaking name which makes it easy to refer too…why are you sitting on your hands about the name?

  • Hello Jack. You are very welcome!

I still remember when I saw the first image of a psone in a game magazine. I was so happy with my Snes but after reading about I already knew I was going to be a PlayStation fan.

Good times playing Tekken and Ridge Racer with my friends.

Please keep bringing all the goodies to our beloved platform.

  • your welcome:)…@145 y dont you stop whining and look at the good side?

  • Gran Turismo 5….not even a mention :/

  • It has always been a great time being a PS3 owner; not just now, but from past to present and beyond. The honorable mentions in the ending credit of WKC is neato, please keep it that way in regards to those hidden titles up yar sleeves. Keep up the good work SCEA and affiliates.
