MAG Developer Tips: Field Support

Jeremy Dunham's Avatar + Posted by Jeremy Dunham on Feb 18, 2010 // Sr. Community Manager, Zipper Interactive

Hot on the heels of yesterday’s medic-oriented patch, Zipper Technical Art Director and beer aficionado Steve Suhy shows off his penchant for great timing with tips on how to play MAG’s Field Support Class. But first, this nicely-presented video followed by Steve’s comments.

Cheers recruits. This is Steve Suhy from Zipper Interactive here to give you some insightful tips on maximizing your Field Support Abilities. Let’s do this!

Basic Tips

  • You always want to maximize your points at the end of a round and using your field support abilities greatly contributes to that cause. So listen to your squad leader and get those FRAGO multipliers. Is the AA down and your squad leader has FRAGO’ed it? Don’t walk, SPRINT TO IT, and grab that multiplier!
  • Use your skill points early for field support skills. These GREATLY contribute to secondary XP.
  • Heal from the field. Get a resuscitation kit ASAP. Your squad will love you for it. So will your XP bonus.
  • Improved Repairing is key! Basically another way of saying score XP faster!
  • Wanna make friends the easy way with your squad? DON’T BLEED OUT! At point of death, first use your analog stick to scan the immediate area for a medic. If one is visible, call out on the mic and wait on the countdown timer as long as possible. Your pain is your squadmates’ reward. And please say thanks – courtesy is still appreciated on the field of blood and destruction.

Advanced Tips

  • If on defense during a Domination match, and you are spawning at your rear point, flank the outsides of your quadrant and reach the forward destroyed bunkers. Repair and move on to another destroyed bunker if possible to repair. Repairing a bunker before repairing an AA will spawn teammates that can help in the job of repairing an AA. Team trumps Rambo every time.
  • While repairing a forward bunker and notice that other bunkers are destroyed, pick the farthest bunker away from your current repair. Once the repaired bunker is up, the opposition will swarm that area to investigate. If you repair far enough away from THAT focus, you’ll have a greater chance of success in getting multiple bunkers repaired. Eliminating predictability is the key to survival.
  • While repairing ANYTHING, always be aware of being vulnerable to an easy line of site from the opposition. Don’t make yourself a target. Don’t be a clothing mannequin with a target on your back.
  • Healing around ANY, yes ANY FRAGO’d targets doubles XP. Take advantage. Be an XP shark.

Awesome tips Steve, thank you kindly. As for the rest of you, we’ll be back again tomorrow with the good word from designer Christopher Burns for his take on the Rapid Assault class. See you in 24!

TO BLOG MAINTENANCE: The embedded videos on the blog postings don’t work on the PS3 browser… Is is a Flash 10 thing or what? I tried using the search box and posting this very comment using my PS3 browser as well, but it wouldn’t bring up the text input box once I clicked in the field. Please tell me there is a fix on the way on either the PS Blog or browser end. It’s a bit silly to have a link on the PS3 home page to the PS Blog that doesn’t function properly on a PS3. Just looking out..

I understand multiple people has a diminishing returns effect on repairing. But say you are repairing an item with one other person. If that other person has improved repairing and you don’t, will they get more of the point pool? Like they are repairing faster and you are repairing slower? Or does their repair just close out quicker and you continue to accrue your alloted amount of XP?

Hope that makes sense. Great tips otherwise.

i get avg. 700-800 xp per match. this is a great post. i was lucky and had access to the beta from phase 1 so i figured most of this out from 5-6 months of beta testing, but for the rookie, this is what they need. keep up the support zipper

Someone made a suggestion on the MAG forums – these videos should be mandatory to watch before playing. The guy was joking, but really – in all seriousness – these should be available in-game under the Training Section. Just stream the videos in a pop-up browser window.

question:
why did you guys take the abilitie to make another character out?
I am almost level 60 and i’m a trophy hunter but only issue is i don’t want to switch fraction because all my buds are no where near level 60 and i want to play with them still. Would it be possible to add an additional charcter slot?

i’m not entirly sure but i beleive you earn the same points because the repair is still going the same way as both player repair it.

We need a tutorial on what the leaders are suppose to do on the maps because way too many people get a leadership role and don’t know what the hell they are doing. Everybody else suffers in these situations. It’s hard to get Frago points if the squad leader isn’t setting any.

well, you should have included this and other tips/guides into the game itself…
Even for the hardcore players there is not enough info and/or training ingame for advanced stuff like leadership (actually new leaders should be forced to learn it first before they can mess up public matches)

Mr. Jeremy Dunham:

I just got a copy of MAG yesterday & like the game & the concept, however my heart lays with socom. I have loved socom from the first release & is the main reason I paid $600 for a PS3. Confrontation was a BIG let down & there have been rumors around the web about Socom 4 in development & that Zipper is back in control not Slant6. If you guys were to search the web & look at how many or your fans love & want a good Socom (mirrored off Socom 2) it may overwhelm you. Socom 2 was by far the best one you guys created the single & multi player, believe it or not but you guys pioneered how online FPS are played today. If you could please make Socom 4 like Socom 2, same game play, tighter controls & better graphics I can guarantee you my salary that you will have a fan base that far exceeds any Call of Duty or Halo game out there. Sony makes all the decisions about Socom since they brought Zipper a few years ago. Sony give Zipper the freedom it needs to make Socom the way it should be & be more active when it comes to the Socom community.

Sincerely,

YODA798907

I would easily pay full price for just for the Bad Company 2 demo though!! I CANT STOP PLAYING IT. 8-|
I just cant wait any longer. I have no doubt already that BC2 will be best online shooter of the year.

A rebuttal on Mr. Dunham’s comment,

Mr. Dunham writes, “Be an XP shark.” This is a nice way of saying “Be an XP whore.” The problem with this logic is that it many cases, being an XP shark doesn’t help out your team. I won’t go into details, but there are many instances where receiving FRAGO bonuses doesn’t actually mean you’re an asset for your team. I agree that teams should follow a leaders instructions, but there are many other ways to be an effective team member outside of FRAGO objectives.
