As you may be aware, some customers have been unable to connect to the PlayStation Network today. This problem affects the models other than the new slim PS3.

We believe we have identified that this problem is being caused by a bug in the clock functionality incorporated in the system.

Errors include:

  • The date of the PS3 system may be re-set to Jan 1, 2000.
  • When the user tries to sign in to the PlayStation Network, the following
message appears on the screen; “An error has occurred. You have been
signed out of PlayStation Network (8001050F)”.
  • When the user tries to launch a game, the following error message appears
on the screen and the trophy data may disappear; “Failed to install
    trophies. Please exit your game.”
  • When the user tries to set the time and date of the system via the
Internet, the following message appears on the screen; “The current date
and time could not be obtained. (8001050F)”
  • Users are not able to play back certain rental video downloaded from the
PlayStation Store before the expiration date.

We hope to resolve this problem within the next 24 hours. In the meantime, if you have a model other than the new slim PS3, we advise that you do not use your PS3 system, as doing so may result in errors in some functionality, such as recording obtained trophies, and not being able to restore certain data.

As mentioned above, please be advised that the new slim PS3 is not affected with this error. We are doing our best to resolve the issue and do apologize for any inconvenience caused.

For the latest status on this situation please continue to check either the PlayStation.Blog or PlayStation.com.

  • Wait. so Sony is not going to say anything about this, and turn their heads the other way like nothing even happened? I really think there were scared is was going to be worst! Just patch this up so it does not happen in the near future!

  • yea that really want cool but my baby buzzin idley now as always, stop playing sony!

  • come on sony give us a free game for what has happened im thinkin a free ps1 game that just came out last week its also happens to be a rpg game as well hmmm what was it again lol

  • @455 – rockstarnati

The PS3 has been on the market for over 3 years. In that 3 years the PS3 system AND it’s network has been down for less than 24 hours. Yes, that $600 system that you and I paid for. The network, multiplayer, Home, and trophies are all a FREE service.

    3 years = 1095 days
    $600 PS3 / 1095 days

    around $.55 a day.

So AT MOST Sony owes you $.55. All those other 1094 days the system and its FREE network has been online and worked almost perfectly fine.

I will send you the 55 cents because your $600 PS3 was “dead” for 24 hours and you can feel “reimbursed” for your pain and suffering.

YOU and EVERYONE else expecting anything for free because of this error are part of what is wrong with this country today. Expecting a golden egg to fall in your lap because you had to smell a fart; waiting for your handout or settlement.

It was most likely a technical mistake, the PS3 did not kill your puppy.

  • I want to think that everything is ok but the fact that Sony has yet to give the all clear worries me a lot. If this issue has indeed been fixed why hasn’t Sony posted anything? Great to see alot of you are having luck but something just doesn’t seem right in the fact that Sony has yet to post anything. I might be a bit paranoid but I have been in other situations where I’ve jumped he gun and got screwed. Nobody else thinks it odd there has been no reply from Sony?

  • @506…no not odd as I think they figured it was the internal clock and it would do exactly what it’s done and fix itself with some exceptions for trophies. It would be nice to hear from them sometime today though.

  • Agree 100% with kidcommando…very well said kid…

  • @KidComamando I agree with you. But Sony didn’t give any information except they’re working on it. They pretty much left us in the dark. They need to assure us that this won’t happen next year or on a real leap year. Also the panic it causes since Sony is usually pretty damn good about keeping their products working. I think that’s why people are upset, they aren’t use to their system failing at all. So one day is pretty big especially for a system that has been hailed as the most reliable and the unhackable.

  • Yesterday I said:

    KSPRAYDAD | February 28th, 2010 at 8:52 pm
The ‘fix’ methinks is to wait until 8pm est on Monday.

Maybe SONY should be hiring me to communicate instead of Patrick and the gang. What is REALLY surprising is Grace’s silence during all this…she is generally so talkative. /s

  • well sony u gunna let everyone know if its fixed or not sheash lol how epicly slow u guys r lmao oh well

  • sony doesnt need to give us anything >.> be happy we dont have to pay to use the network like some other game console

  • i cant believe there are articles out saying this will affect final fantasy sales for the ps3! i mean what a load of crap. other people are so worried they have tried to trade in their ps3’s for new ones!! i mean what the??

  • not having a problem dates trophies and data all intact. Stupid question though why would you be able to set the system back to 2000???? didnt the ps3 come out in 06 that shouldnt be an option.

  • @505

I don’t expect anything for free. In fact, as I said before, my PS3 was unaffected. As for those that had to endure The ApocalyPS3, it is unacceptable and if Sony wanted to keep them happy they would think about giving them something to ease the suffering.

It wasn’t the free services that malfunctioned. It was the hardware itself. People were pissed because they paid all this money expecting to be able to use the stuff THEY OWN. But because of the way trophies are set up they couldn’t even play the games they owned, even offline. That’s b.s. any which way you look at it.

  • I am at college and I haven’t plugged my PS3 in, in months. Will I be affected the next time I start up my PS3?

  • @516 Jagun: Nope.

  • Yea this didn’t happen to me… I have a newer ps3 but not a slim…

  • Seriously! No response from sony all day? When are you going to fix this? I can log in now but I still don’t have my trophies back. Unbelievable.

  • @rockstarnati

    cool,thanks

  • Oh there they are.

  • My launch 60GB PS3 has been connected since yesterday morning without any issues, and the date changed to 3/1 correctly at midnight. I had been playing Saturday, Sunday, Monday no problems at all… Are you sure this is a calendar issue?

  • I have a ps3 slim and I have been having problems playing uncharted 2 multiplayer over the last few days….mostly the signing out problem!!!

  • i can officially add that the slimline can be affected as my PS3 has had the connection error

  • my ps3 is still not fixed an its been 4 days idk what the [DELETED] u guys do

  • I can live without a weekend of gaming, and hell maybe trophies are worthless. But when you call Sony’s support on issues like this, firmware, or to get service work on your Playstation, you get screwed. Sony is either too big or cares too little to EVER have offered me ANY help when contacting them with an issue. $150 plus tax and shipping to get a bluray drive fixed is insane. New systems come with cables and a controller for 300! Just try to get a refund into your wallet. Your own money cannot be refunded. I can get my money back at WalMart,McDonalds, but not your unspent money which you have in their account. Its like Sony is into the banking industry. Bye bye money.

  • damn how long will it take to get this problem fixed.first ya take care of it then the next day it’s all messed up again.. i mean sony is a huge company get it it fixed or get a new tech team..and then sony was thinking about chargeing people for the online play are you serious. can’t even get this fixed.. i paid a lot for my ps3 and all the games i brought so i invested a lot of money on this.. so get the the problem fixed sony……

  • I am enraged. We truly live in an Orwellian society when Big Bro has his dirty little fingers in our home. Do you hear us Sony? Reparations are required. There’s NO WAY I should have to rely on your silly network to play my games offline. Unacceptable. My next ‘whatever’ won’t be a Sony.

  • According to Sony this problem was fixed on March the 2nd 2010. Here is the address of the notice http://us.playstation.com/support/answer/index.htm?a_id=1980
Hope this helps. I am not sure if my system was affect but my PS3 date was advanced by one day. My other PS3 is a slim and I have had no problems with it though.

  • Is this the same problem that I am currently having with the Bad Company 2 store. I can’t enter the code from the game stop or the one that came with the game.

  • Howdy Folks,

Why are so many people irate about this? The PS3 Network is free. Xbox live has messed up numerous times that I have lost count, and to make things worse, we have to pay for XBL. So, in summary, just wait the day or two, go out and get some fresh air–the world isn’t over.

  • spartanclone001…..

I agree with your last statement. However, in my case and many many others the problem still exists. It is not fixed for many of us. The Fact that sony’s last statement suggests that the problem and its symptoms are fixed leaves me to believe that i will be left with a broken down system that does not work. Its been five days now and they have not recognized that there are lingering affects to mant sony owners.

    Sincerely

    Toyota

  • Just happend to me again!

  • I do have that problem. I can’t connect to Internet anymore. If I don’t disable the connection, BattleField Bad Company 2 crash on start with a black screen… Help!

  • @505
I don’t expect anything for free nor do i want a settlement or handout. When I bought the ps3 a year ago one big reason i chose it over xbox is the free online!! I bought it knowing I could play all day everyday for free! Therefore I am not getting what I have paid 4!!!!! I don’t care about how long it took to screw up all i care about is not getting what I paid for.Its started Feb.28th it is now March 6th, that is more than 24 hours on my calculator Kidcommando!Sony, please get your tech team, or your entire company if that’s what it takes, on top of the issue, seriously you guys are really loosing a lot of loyal customers!!WHAT IS THE PROBLEM!!!!!

  • what is sony going to do about the infected ps3 s that stopped reading games and movies just act like they didn’t mess things up i waited 24 hours and it still won’t read games

  • I just ordered a refurbished 40gb PS3 from Gamestop because Sony can’t get enough units out for people to buy. I expect to at least be able to hook it up and play it without issues when it gets here. So I’d definitely like to know it’s fixed for everyone, otherwise I’ll just cancel the purchase and stick with my 360.

  • omfg. SLIMLINE SYSTEMS ARE AFFECTED NOW TOO :o? i just played my slim for a few hours online today and had no problem.

  • My PS3 still won’t read disc’s since the virus started. Playstation Network ruined my $400 system with this virus and i have apprx. 15 games ($60 each) that i can’t play. What is sony going to do to reimburse me. Im not buying a new system(slim)like sony wants us to.. Why so sony can put out a virus and ruin that one too. I’ll probly switch to Xbox unless my PS3 is fixed.

  • I am having the same issue as weedstar42. Ever since this virus hit the system my ps3 won’t read games or movies. I called Sony and they told me my issue was unrelated and that I would have to send it away and pay $200+ to get it fixed!!

I found several other blogs full of people with the same issue! Must just be a coincidence that all our systems went down at the same time…..

  • Sony are u dumb the Ps3 isn’t from the dollar store the warranty should cover broke Ps3s u screwed up with ur network virus i want mine fixed because u mechanically broke it i didnt phsically break it so the warranty isn’t void.

  • I’ve been doing some research and it appears that the issue is the blue ray laser diode got fried. This can apparently be caused by turning the system off using the switch at the back or power surges. I would assume then that the same thing could have been caused by the system freezing repeatedly over the last week or so. Again, this is something that Sony should be taking care of for those of us that were effected by your mistake.

  • i have a ps3 slim and it has the so called bug and it is not fixed like they say….. y am i the only one wit a slim that has the problem :(

  • ps3 slim got 8001050F error since mar 6th, and still not fixed yet.

  • Can someone help me? i can sign in and everything to psn, but when i tried to download Kill zone 2, is stopped at 32%. I clicked out of the download (download in background)& it sorta lagged. When i go into data utility it froze for a few seconds, same thing for trophies and save data, aswell as other tabs on the XMB. i cancel the download and everything is good. what is my problem. this happened when i downloaded vidzone aswell.

  • Sony you’re about to lose a loyal customer!!! How you can say it’s a coincidence that my PS3 stopped reading discs exactly at the same time this issue started. Now you want me to pay $150 to get it repaired? This is insane. Look at all the people that’s complained about this exact issue and you’re playing the “it was just a coincidence” card?

  • Received my refurbished 40gb PS3 from Gamestop today. Worked fine out of the box. When I hooked it to the internet and updated it, I immediately got the console shutting down with the blinking red light whenever I tried to play my pre-ordered FFXIII.

Sending it back to Gamestop for a refund. Amazing how I’ve never had one problem with my 360 in over two years of ownership, but the first PS3 I get is screwed over by Sony’s bad coding.

  • Just read that Sony will shut down PS3 Home Servers on April 1, 2010. Is this true?

  • I’m sorry. I got bit by the “Parody” section in Gameinformer..Ha. Ha.

  • Sony how do we get a hold of you…. i want my PS3 fixed ive called your number and nothing they said helped….we all know this virus fried the blue ray laser and no blue ray disc’s play anymore…I’m not paying $150 to get it sent in and fixed…. you should be fixing them for free since its your fault…

  • I’d like to see Consumer Reports do an independent investigation for their next issue. Perhaps everyone should e-mail and/or call them asking for such. That might get a fire under Sony’s butts if CR does indeed find faulty coding screwed the PS3’s.
