SOCOM 4: It’s Official!

I wanted to drop in and deliver some truly exciting news – on behalf of everyone here at Zipper Interactive, I’m pleased to announce that SOCOM 4 is indeed in development and is slated for release exclusively on PlayStation 3 this fall.

SOCOM 4 screenshot Explosion

Of course, as with any new announcement, what you really want to know are the details: Who’s in your squad? Where have they been deployed? What kind of threat are they up against? Though we’ll be revealing the answers to all these questions and plenty more throughout 2010, we don’t want to leave you completely in the dark, so what we will tell you is that a militant revolutionary has unexpectedly seized control in an important South Asian country. As the Ops Com, your mission is to command an elite five-man squad charged with stopping his aggressive agenda before it’s too late. In only six days, you must lead your team through a hostile jungle and urban environments against an army of well-armed rebel insurgents that completely outnumber you.

If that setup doesn’t whet your appetite enough, you should also be pleased to know that in addition to the SOCOM’s single-player operation, players will also be able to enjoy a 32-person multiplayer mode that boasts more Special Forces units than ever before!

If you crave even more information, then the guys at IGN have you covered with their exclusive first-look preview at what we’ve shown so far. Editor and shooting game fanatic, Ryan Geddes, dropped by our studio earlier in the week to check out SOCOM 4 for himself, so be sure to read the full IGN article to find out what he thinks.

But wait! There’s more! As part of our continued announcement celebration, the folks at GameTrailers TV will air the world premiere trailer for SOCOM 4 tonight at 12:30 am EST/PST. All you have to do is tune in to Spike TV when the time is right and let your eyes and ears do the rest. Don’t miss it!

Oh, and before we let you go, we wanted to send a message to our SOCOM and MAG fans all over the world. First, if you play MAG and wonder what this means for the game’s future, wonder no more – we’re still fully committed to supporting MAG for a long, long time and the addition of another game in our lineup doesn’t change that. Second, it’s been great to hear from SOCOM fanatics located in every corner of the globe as we led into today’s announcement. We’re extremely excited to be attached to this beloved franchise again and knowing that so many people wanted us to return to something that already meant so much to us has been both inspiring and touching – so thank you to all of you who wanted it to happen! We look forward to living up to your expectations.

  • Hell yes! Socom 2 is one of the greatest games ever made in my opinion. Should be interesting where this goes.

Frostfire = my favorite map in any game ever. :D I actually pretty much just bought Confrontation BECAUSE of Frostfire. >.> Hopefully you guys’ll throw it in there for the fun of it. Even as like a “old maps” DLC pack or something
Whatever who cares ill be buying this no matter what. Zipper = Secks.

  • Can PS3 owners be more elitist? I thought XBox 360 owners were rude, but holy hell. This is Zipper’s thread about SOCOM 4, not Sony’s. Complain to Sony and stop with the negativity towards Zipper. At least they kept SOCOM 4 exclusive and could have sent it to Microsoft like RockStar or SE, not to mention DMC, and RE.

Can’t wait to play the game Jeremy. Looks amazing. Will this be running full HD or just 720? And what will the FPS look like?

  • OMG [DELETED] YES YES YES YES YES YES!!!

  • This is terrific news.
Note to Zipper: Let Socom be Socom. While other shooters have come and gone and have been big hits along the way, there’s always been something terribly unique about Socom. Be true to its roots and you’ll remind everyone again why Socom was the king of console shooters for so long.

    Also, *robust* clan system!

  • Will it still be 3rd person or will it be an fps??

  • LOL this is their big sequel, lol, great another modern shooter war game. We have like 20 of these already. I think you guys are running out of ideas. Give us something fresh already, stop playing it safe.

Considering Sony owns the SOCOM IP and Zipper is a fully owned subsidiary of Sony, no they couldn’t have made SOCOM IV for 360, PC or Wii, unless SCE wanted them to.

The fact that Jeremy is not answering any questions about co-op is worrysome.

    • See comment #204 — we don\’t have any announcements regarding online play right now (outside of the obvious 32-player support).

  • I’ve never been much of a SOCOM fan, but I absolutely will be getting this day 1 if those screens are how S4 will look in game and aren’t CGI. Those screens look AMAZING if actual in-game. PLEASE make the online look that good. Get some tips from GG on how to keep amazing campaign graphics in tact online.

I just shake my head in disgust at all the haters on here. All these hypocrites have done is beg for SOCOM 4 by Zipper and when they get it they’re like….”MEH” or worse….idiots.

I really enjoy MAG too, but it actually feel like a 3rd person game in 1st person, which makes it feel a bit….”off”. So I’m really looking forward to getting my hands on SOCOM 4 and becoming a SOCOM fan.

It’s actually kinda funny, I’ve been a gamer for a long time and had TONS of PS2 game, but the 3 major franchises, SOCOM, GoW and MGS, I didn’t like on PS2. But the PS3 versions of these games have been amazing to me. Weird.

  • Is this a game made by just the team at Zipper or are Slant 6 tagging along. I know you (Zipper) are the creator and the reason I ask this is because I was wondering if you both will be working on Socom 4 to make a really cool game.

Will the different unites from past Socom games make it into multi-player even the new ones from Confrontation.

I liked in Socom: Confrontation there was an over the shoulder view. It was not first person and I really liked that. Will that way to play Socom 4 be in the game?

How close are you working with the Navy to make this game realistic.

Because you see games like COD: Modern Warfare 2 and think that Socom could give a really great modern warfare story.

Also do you look what other developers are doing with there games or will you being going at it with your own style.

I for one really want to see what you can make though. There is nice things other developers have done. But I want to see what Zipper can bring to the table over a copy of another game.

Will the game support split-screen or co-op?

Also is there any chance of a cover system?

Sorry for all the questions I just am really excited and it comes off with me asking lots of things.

  • I don’t know whats wrong but people love to hate. You don’t care refrain from posting lol.

I’ve heard a lot about socom so this will be my first time. Fighters and rpg’s were my thing on ps2 so i cant wait to try this… thank you=)

  • Great to hear that the real SOCOM is finally back!!!

  • Hopefully Sony/Zipper is smart and have a month long MP public beta and a co-op(surely it will have it?) demo before release.

    Definitely needs it.

  • I was waiting for the next OFFICIAL (/6 socom confrontation is crap) for a while. Thanks zipper!

  • Can I get a conformation that there will be no vehicles in the mp this time?

  • I was NOT expecting this to be the announcement, but that only made the surprise so much more fulfilling. I didn’t buy MAG because it lacked offline content, and I didn’t like the previous SOCOM game. The fact this is being made by Zipper Interactive -and- has an offline campaign makes this a guaranteed first-day purchase for me. I’d roll around in dog turds to get this game right now.

  • Hopefully its more like previous Socoms than it is like MAG

  • It’s better for you if this time the graphic is miles miles miles miles miles miles mils miles miles (and THOUSAND more times) better then the last Socom and the recent MAG… because it was totally a joke, and not even funny.
I prefer play with 32 Player and have a Physic, Graphic, Detail etc like KZ2 ather than a stupid 256 Player warfare game with a PS2.5 game quality with poor details, poor graphics, zero physic etc etc etc

where are Motorstorm 3? Killzone 3? Resistance 3?…..

  • socom 4 omg i have been waiting for this for the longest this has made my day thank you sony and zipper this is gonna be great. best online shooter. i have been playing socom since socom 1 this makes me feel so happy the true socom developers and sequel. finally see you all on the battlefield this fall

  • What Socom 4 needs to be successful:

    1) 3rd-Person Modern Warfare 2-like action for the missions
    2) New and IMPROVED engine – Excellent graphics
    3) Uncharted 2 storytelling
    4) Advertising
    5) A large developer team with dedication, that will deliver to the fans

  • I hope its not like MAG. The game is decent, but SEVERELY lacking in the graphics department (understandably, though).

Also, like some other people have said, PLEASE make the TROPHIES much easier to get them Confrontation’s. Those were just insanely stupid and pointless.

  • I just noticed that my name is Bluntaggio… there something wrong… i don’t even know this name wtf??

  • @Jeremy-

first off thanks for taking the time to reply and answer some questions, we all really appreciate it when devs/marketing folks do that!

second- SOCOM was my first venture into online gaming back on the PS2 via dial up! great memories! I remember many a drunken night yelling into my headset..

    good luck with SOCOM 4!

  • psn hacked? why have this PSN ID?

  • Will it be on the PS Store?
    Or Blu Ray only?

  • The graphics already look great!! will there be any further improvements to the look of the game as the project goes forward?

  • What’s wrong everyone? One month, everyone is BEGGING Zipper to make a new SOCOM game. Then they announce it, everyone shrugs it off like it’s not big deal?? What?!
The first SOCOM was the first game I ever played online on PS2, I loved it. Confrontation didn’t have the same feel, but since you guys are developing it, I’m sure it’ll be much better. :)
And, loving MAG too, great game.

  • by when will we see a release date i cant wait i played socom 3 and i dont know why people say it sucked it was good and thats what got me into socom i didnt bother with confrontation since i saw slant six made it and not zipper and thank god zipper is making socom4 yay i cant wait.. whats going to happen with mag? i still play and love mag are there going to be any more game modes added on??or enhansing graphics? i dont mind graphics but most people do i care about gameplay. thanks for update and im definately pre ordering socom4 good job zipper

  • q_FRANKENZTEIN_p

    CO-OP would be awesome!

  • Oh, and if this the story is located in South-East Asia, please include the Philippines in there ;D
Work hard on this game, Zipper! Look at games such as MW2 and Uncharted 2 and how they became successful. I want realism, partially destructive environments, realistic animations!

  • are you guys making the typical online gameplay were if you die ur out for the round? or is going to be how games now a dayz are with respawn rank??

  • will it have dedicated severs?

  • I hope this game blows me away, mag was a good concept but it sucked ass, not for the 256 players, that’s great awsome…but due to the sucky gaeplay and ugly graphics. No ingame music on a multiplayer?! We asked for it and you didn’t deliver, maybe you should listen to us on what we want. :)

  • it might be a weird demand? can you guys link me to your company logo ? (Zipper interactive) because i’m making this thread and i can’t find a good resolution of your logo =s

  • Will the game come with a headset like Confrontation?

    Thanks for your time

  • PLEASE let the Single Player campaign have epic set peaces and great story. I dont want a half done story line that is generic. Please for the love of god make a fun and thrilling story whit great looking levels that dont look generic. PLEASE!

I would love to here if Zipper will truly make an exiting story that differentiated itself from other shooters.

  • sorry to say this, but I’m not excited for this, and after seeing how horrible Socom confrontation is, no thanks

  • Some of you kids need to do your homework before you go posting negative comments about the SOCOM (the real SOCOM franchise.) Confrontation was coded by SLANT6 thus the half-assed-made-for-PSP-presented-on-PS3 silliness they tried to pass off as part of the SOCOM family, and as proof by comments, vandalizing and damn near ruining the SOCOM franchise. SOCOM I,II and III/Combined Assault were all produced by ZIPPER which played waaayy better and regarding their last game, gave you everything. From small maps to large maps, vehicles/no vehicles, 8vs8 16vs16, and an excellent assortment of weapons and attachments. It was THEE complete game. Even the DLC was on-time and great. Please do not compare Slant6’s first and only version to any of Zipper’s SOCOMs. Zipper has taken pride in all of their versions of SOCOMs and I expect nothing less with SOCOM 4. IN fact notice that this is SOCOM4 and not SOCOM5. Confrontation doesn’t count nor cut it!!!
To Zipper. I read the preview article on IGN and I’m concerned as I did not see anything about commanding your squad through voice. Sup with that? Where it at? What’s SOCOM if I can’t say…”Able, cover target. Bravo, move to, Zulu!” :-)

  • @ Everyone writing “meh” or “dissapointing”

    Shut up and get out.

  • q_FRANKENZTEIN_p

    @286
Confrontation was made by a different studio.

  • Cool. But I will not buy Socom 4 cuz I am tired of PS3 and I am selling it. Here’s my reasons:
    1) lagging
    2) glitches
    3) no subtitles in movies
    4) console sucks, no offense

  • will there be offline multiplayer? As in 4 player split screen. Im tired of not being able to play face to face with close friends!

  • THANK YOU ZIPPER FOR ANSWERING OUR PRAYERS!!!!!!!!!!

  • THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU SONY AND ZIPPER =D Give us MP Heaven! \o/

  • Socom 4 thank you

  • Please god bring sure shot to 4. I seriously wont buy it if it doesn’t have sureshot. I haven’t bought a socom since socom 2. It’s just a controller layout, how hard could it be?

  • Pretty cool news although I must admit that I’ve never bought a Socom game. I just have never been overly intrigued by the series. But I’ll be sure to keep an eye on this one. I may buy it.

I’m glad to hear you guys are going to continue to support MAG. Of all of the online fps games I’ve played, MAG is my favorite. And to let you guys know, release some DLC for MAG and I’ll buy it without a second thought.

Take care guys and I look forward to more MAG and Socom news.

  • OMFGWTFBBQ

No seriously though, THIS IS AWESOME NEWS! I LOVE SOCOM. HHHHEEEEEELLLLLLL YEEAAAHHH

I hope you guys bring back EVERY map from 1 and 2, and put more up from 4, giving us like 30+ maps or something. I KNOW YOU GUYS CAN DO IIIIITTT

  • this is it? wow what a huge disappointment. Socom has always sucked.

  • I just read the IGN preview……..sounds great. Looks to me like those shots are pretty indicative of the in-game graphics. Nice. PLEASE make them look that good online as well.

I know the game will be great, and I only have one request which you know tons of other people want as well…..Online co-op through the campaign. As great as so many PS3 games are, almost NONE of them have online co-op through the campaign, which is a HUGE feature. I think the only exclusive that’s had it was HAZE. Please make it happen.

  • Jeremy, Is this going to be a third person or first person shooter?
