ModNation Racers PS3: Dynamic Props – More than Just Speed Bumps

69 3

Hello, Mark here back for another developer post. Since we last talked, our North American and European Public PS3 Betas have exposed ModNation Racers to the world. These previews generated lots of great feedback and have helped us focus on key issues in these final months. I’m happy to say that frame rate, load times and race cameras have all improved.

In my last update, I talked about some of the more advanced features of Track Studio that we’ve used to create the tracks for the game. Today I’d like to talk about some of the cool props you can add to your tracks to make them fun, challenging and memorable! Dynamic Props are interactive objects that you can place on your track to enhance the gameplay.

We’re including a load of exciting things to place on your tracks, such as barrel launchers that shoot crushing or exploding barrels.

There are also ModBots, robots that move back and forth across your track and attack karts that get close. Some shoot flame, some will bounce racers off the track if they aren’t careful. They can be scattered anywhere, so it’s a nice touch if you want your racers to watch the road.

We’ve also included ramps for cool jumps, and launchers for shooting the kart over huge distances. We have barriers that pop out of the ground to test a driver’s agility, and flame vents to make any careless driver extra crispy! We designed them to be customizable, reusable and effective in a variety of different scenarios. The devilish setups we’ve put in our tracks are just the beginning of what can be done!

Highlighting a Dynamic Prop in Track Studio and pressing the Square button will pop up a dialog where you can adjust settings on how the prop behaves. For instance, you can dial in the height of a ramp, or change the direction of the Twister (a giant rotating platform). Adjusting these things gives you the power to customize your track to make it as crazy as you want.

Dial your ramp just right or you might hit some humps!

These dangers work well with gameplay incentives such as item pods or boost pads – give the racers a reason to brave the danger! For instance, use a Devastator (a giant stomper) and boost pads in combination with a popup ramp to let them jump clean over it, versus the faster, more treacherous route under the Devastator.

A whole gauntlet of Devastators to slalom through!?!

With so many Dynamic Props, and so many possible combinations, I can’t wait to see what the community comes up with.

Until then, check out our new trailer (above) that gives you a taste of all the insanity you can create with the toys we’ve built for you.

  • I’m with ya #18. For me to buy this game it must include at least 2 player split-screen. If it includes 4-player split screen, then it’s a must. I have spent more time on $9.99 downloads of games such as Worms & the Pixeljunk games, because at least there I can sit next to my best buddy or my girlfriend and have a good time. Split Screen is too few and far between in games these days!

  • Just like little big planet this game will be very successful because of the ability for kids to use their imagination. Plus, unlimited levels is always nice. I will definitely buy this game! I might even buy multiple copies for friends….can’t wait.

  • Will there be 4 player offline in this game???

  • @21 You didn’t obviously read my whole comment. I am trying to help UFG make this game BETTER than LBP because the kids in that community don’t care how messed up the rating system is.

My older brother (age 22) plays LBP non-stop and the community is largely made up of kids. So don’t try and say it’s NOT a kids game. I’m just saying it’s a “family” game obviously tailored towards kids.

I’ll lurk internet forums until I know they have fixed the community system before getting this game. The rating/downloading counter was completely screwed in the beta. THE GAMEPLAY WAS FINE. FIX THE SHARE STATION.

  • June first release date. It would be cool if they added more power ups. i like the powerups and the advance power ups but if more powerups were included it would be better.

  • Great stuff, I’m so glad to hear about the framerate and loadtimes.
Has anything been done about the water, I mean does water spash now? with sound?
Just an idea, I’d love it if when you go deep into water you keep driving but just really slow. I never liked it when you just stopped.

  • Do you guys have an actual release date? Sony’s website says sometime this year, Wikipedia says Spring, Walmart says May 15, Best Buy says May 18, PlayStation: The Official Magazine said February and someone told me June 1.
PLEASE GIVE US AN OFFICIAL RELEASE DATE, OR AT BEST WHAT MONTH YOU WILL RELEASE IT IN!!! :(

  • wow 100% LBP but with karts looks very funny!

  • please tell me there is more than one camera view. the one that was in the beta was way to close

  • The beta in england was awesome! Spent hours perfecting tracks, and made a few that people actually liked, too! To the nay-sayers who think this is a kids game.. well.. it IS a kids game, but it lets you be as serious as you want! I made a simple track for me and my 5 year old son, and a hardcore drop zone for my pals to race with me! This deserves all the support we can give. Can’t wait for the release! :) look for ubermonkey come Q2 and although you’ll probably beat me, my son does, it’ll be a laugh doing it.

  • awesome game i tested on beta no more waiting for this game :S

  • @51 (Sephex)

    I couldn’t agree more!

Splitscreen must be include for me to buy it, 2 players minimum and yes, 4 players split will garanteed a buy or 2 players split with others online.

I also bought a lot of “little” PSN games just because they include local multiplayer.

You said “Split Screen is too few and far between in games these days!”, SO RIGHT, that point and the multiple SKU (and game installs) since we have HDD on consoles are the two main things that could make me a non-gamer in the up-coming consoles generations…I want a videogame console, not a PC in front of my couch.

  • can i get band for 10th prestige hack mw2

  • I really hope you include more themes down the track. I’d really like to be able to make moon levels with lower gravity for instance.

  • You can make shortcuts?!

Sold! I’m pre-ordering this for sure!

How about tricks? Are they pre-designed or can u change those too?

  • man…you guys are kicking @$$ w/the games coming to PSN. modnatin, 3d dot heroes and Joe Danger.

not to mention the disc based games. 2010 is a great year to own a PS3. now all we need is Gran Turismo 5 this year and a Pixel Junk Monsters sequel or DLC ASAP. keep up the good work.

  • I’m really excited about this game. MORE than LBP. Because racing > platforming (for me). And I really hope you guys delivers. Because looking at the trailers and gameplay movies. I think MNR is BETTER than LBP. :D

  • I loved the beta, even with its problems and limited content. Couldn’t believe how many things people made with the limitations! I’m gonna love this game!

  • Can’t wait for the game to come out. I have so many ideas for race tracks! It’s going to be barrels of fun!(pun very much intended) Quick question though. Will players be able to make tunnels through the raised terrain?
