Happy 5th Anniversary PSP!

135 0

March 24, 2005 will always be known in PlayStation history as the day we debuted the PSP system in North America. At midnight launches across the country, hundreds of you waited with great anticipation in lines at local retail stores for the PSP system. With its best-in-class, 4.3 inch high-resolution LCD display, vast library of software titles and built-in wireless communications, the PSP system was the first integrated handheld entertainment system to introduce console-quality gaming and comprehensive entertainment capabilities to the portable market. Half a decade later, PSP is still going strong and continues to provide the best portable gaming experience and offer incredible value to consumers.

With more than 520 PSP software titles, including God of War: Chains of Olympus, Gran Turismo, LittleBigPlanet, Resistance: Retribution, and SOCOM: Fireteam Bravo as well as more than 20,000 movies and TV episodes, “minis,” digital comics, original programming, and more than 300 games available on the PlayStation Network, it’s easy to understand why you have grown to love your PSP.

PSPs ready to be bought

As we move further into 2010, the innovation and technological prowess of the PSP system continues to be evident. We have a plethora of exciting new games, some of which have yet to be announced, coming later this year that will continue to deliver the same unparalleled gaming experiences that you know and love.

In celebration of the PSP’s fifth anniversary, check out the snapshot below of some of the PSP platform’s most notable milestones.

PSP Timeline

The PSP platform has seen tremendous growth in the last five years and we have you to thank. We’re extremely grateful for your enthusiasm and feedback because without it, the PSP system wouldn’t be what it is today. We look forward to providing you with more great content and many more years of portable entertainment in 2010 and beyond.

We’d love to hear how you’re planning to celebrate PSP’s big day so feel free to share your feedback in the comments below. Happy Anniversary PSP!

  • Dear Sony
    Attn: PSP Division,
    Congrats and Happy Birthday!!!
I have a few questions and concerns many of us on here share.
Why did you let it all slip away to the likes of Nintendo and Apple?
I am talking about market share and being innovative (hardware).
For being one of the largest technology driven companies, you lost your synergy with the PSP. Why?
You create great consoles (Cell), controller tech (sixaxis, dualshock, MOVE), cameras/lenses (Alpha) , cell phone technology/ Sony Ericsson ( Xperia), Memory Sticks/ Flash memory, HDTVs with one of the best LCD tech on the market (XBR series).
BUT yet somehow you fail to put it all together, and market mini versions with slightly “better” tech… still leaving in all the flaws and criticisms we’ve been clamoring about for 5 years.

  • I can go on and on about the criticisms of your PSP iterations shared by many industry professionals.
Your competition is already talking about Next Gen Technology(Nintendo) and the release of new hardware- iPad (Apple).
I’m truly concerned about the future of the PSP.
Please continue to create great games but focus on your hardware because it’s suffering in the handheld market.
I know you don’t comment on rumors or speculation, but I hope you are working on the next best thing before it is too late.

    Sincerely,

  • Happy 5th Bday PSP I remember when I got the limited edition value pack. It came with a UMD sampler and Spider-man 2: the movie:)

  • Happy Birthday PSP, I remember when I first had the PSP, I was crying because of its amazing. Remember Wipeout Pure, oh yeah.

  • That picture of Jack Tretton is epic! It makes you guys even more lovable.;)

  • happy b day

  • Happy Bday PSP! I appreciate my PSP-3000 very much.

TYPO on the PSP Timeline Graphic though.
On the November 18, 2009 text description the letter “f” is missing. the text reads “…which can be ound ….” and it should read “…which can be found…”

Just wanted you to know so that the graphics department can correct this. It is otherwise an incredible timeline.

    Thanks,

  • RRRAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH ITS MY BIRTHDAY!!!

  • I LOVE my psp happy birthday psp i really enjoy playing games while im away from home thats the best part about it so i dont have to read a book all the time lol

  • HAPPY B DAY PSP!!!!…KEEP ON TRUCKN

  • Happy Birthday, PSP! I’m not going to lie, I thought you were useless as hardware, but then I bit the bullet and bought a PSP-2000 in a last minute decision with Patapon. One of the best decisions I ever made! Here’s to hoping that people realize how awesome you actually are when the PSP2 rolls out.

  • “With more than 520 PSP software titles”

Let me correct that for you….

“With more than 520 PSP software titles only available for the UMD enabled PSPs and less than half of that is available for download at non-discounted price for the PSP Go.”

Screw you guys for having the audacity to celebrate a system that I supported more than Sony. Over those 5 years, I have bought 4 PSPs. 2 PSP-1000 and 1 PSP-2000. I have purchased over 60 UMD games for the platform. The PSP Go comes out, and I dish out more of my money. The problem? Less than half of those games are available on the PSN for the PSP Go. LESS THAN HALF. It has been half a year since the PSP Go came out and you guys are still only releasing 1 or 2 PSP games a week on PSN?

I don’t care about minis. I don’t care about TV show reruns. I don’t care about Digital Comics. I got my PSP to play games.

    Where the hell are they?

I am so done with Sony handhelds. I will NEVER let them rip me off again. I will NEVER buy another Sony handheld device.

    ********************
Ok, I’m done with my rant on the PSP and Sony. As for the PS3, keep the games coming. Unlike the PSP, I am actually having a tough time keeping up with all the PS3 games.

  • I just picked up a PSP the other day ironically enough lol. Congrats on the 5th birthday.

  • PSP Go is the way. I’ll wait till this one drops, or till the PSP 2 pops. I bought a PSP on the 1st day, but after a year, I sold it. I was not playing it anymore. I did the same with my DSi this week. Maybe I’m simply not into portable gaming? lol. Well, I suppose it depends on the games, and on the design of the console. If it’s silm, it’s better (PSP Go), and if it’s powerful, it’s better. The controls are the big things for me too. The DSi controls feels cheap plastic, while the PSP only have one analog stick and not touch screen. Hoping the PSP2 will have both! =D

  • happy birthday even though i’m really fustrated about the money i wasted on my pspgo and i still have to buy most title on umd to play them since they aren’t on psn -_-

  • HAPPY 5TH ANNIVERSARY PSP, to celebrate, I’ll play Ridge Racer PSP (one of the launched games)on my 1000 series psp. ROCK ON SONY ROCK ON!!!!

  • wow so many negative comments. i really hate that. But you can’t please everyone. i can’t believe it’s been out 5 years. damn. i remember when it first came out i was never able to buy one. i was in high school and didnt have a job. then ps3 came out and i saved for almost a year before i bought my 60gb and shes still alive and well. i just got my psp in november and i swear if i didnt have it, i would die. if my gf is watching twilight and i gotta sit there with her, as long as i have the volume down or my headphones on, im ok. god i love sony. i hope once i get my degree in comp science i can try and get a job with you guys…or even an internship. well congrats sony thanks for everything you guys kick ass…and happy bday psp!!!!

  • Thanks PSP for allowing me to play Monster Hunter Freedom series!!

My PSP 1000 still works like the first day I purchased it. Hell it still looks like it did the first day I purchased it(I take good care of my Sony products) Keep rolling out the great content and can’t wait for Peace Walker and any news related to the PSP brand come E3.

  • I was wondering its been a long while since there was a major firmware update to the psp and ps3. is there going to be one coming soon for both the psp and ps3.

  • What a fantastic glorious ride it has been!! Happy B-Day PSP, we all look forward to the coming years of PSP gaming!

  • I’m a gadget hound and the PSP is my favorite device of all time! Love it like crazy! We have four of them in our family! I’ll be reading digital comics and playing Untold Legends Brotherhood of the Blade which was the launch title I bought with my day one PSP-1000 to celebrate!

  • happy bday. I had an original phat, traded it in and got a 2000. bought my son a 2000 and my daughter a 3000. just traded in my 2000 for a go. Am a little peeved that the game promo ended earlier this week but the signs are still up for my free title at the store.
oh well, love the unit, now off to psn to get some content for the 16 gig internal drive

  • lets hope psp2 comes soon:D

  • and lets hope that pspgo dies out IT IS STUPID

  • hard to believe 2005 sony made the 1000!

  • I know this is late, but I’ve been quite busy last week. Though I only had my PSP-1000 since September 2007, it has given me plenty to be excited about. From some quality games to some cool Firmware updates to the “why didn’t SCEA release it in America” PSP Camera (good thing I finally imported one last year), I feel that the PSP is certainly a capable handheld that can hopefully better even better. Happy 5th anniversary, PSP.
