I’m pleased to share some exciting news involving our crafty, stitched-together character we all know and love – that’s right, I’m talking about the one and only Sackboy. Today, we are officially announcing that our cloth friend and all of his fellow Sack-people will be back for a completely new adventure in LittleBigPlanet 2, which will be released later this year for PS3!

LittleBigPlanet established the Play, Create, Share creative gaming genre and we can’t thank the fans and critics enough for the praise and support we’ve received. The game continues to grow and evolve, helped by countless players around the globe. In fact, the sharing nature of the game has become so embraced, it has attracted fans to publish more than two million levels to the PlayStation Network since the award-winning game was released!

To show you what you can expect from LittleBigPlanet 2, here’s an exclusive look at our spanking new trailer:

So, what can you expect from LittleBigPlanet 2?

First of all, it’s developed by Media Molecule, the extremely talented team that brought you the first game, so you know you’re going to get a special experience. LittleBigPlanet 2 will provide a whole new collection of tools and rules for fans to Play, Create, and Share, including an evolved approach to control and customization that has never been seen before.

LittleBigPlanet has always empowered users to create their own levels by utilizing the same tools as the development team. Now in LittleBigPlanet 2, we’ve upped the ante, giving players the ability to not only make better levels, but completely new games – think top-down racing games, multiplayer shooters, flying side-scrollers, RPGs, etc. The possibilities are really endless.

LBP2 will also have a loads of new features, including revamped graphics, a fresh storyline, added accessories and equipment for Sackboy, and much, much more – trust me I’m only scratching the surface here!

  • Great Monday morning news. How exciting!

  • oh yea

  • Nice way to start the week. Just hope it integrates with the original so all the previously created content on the community carries over.

    • Yup, LBP2 will be backwards compatible so all levels created online in LBP will be accessible in LBP2.

  • This is fantastic news!!

  • inb4 whiners whining about sequel’ing

  • My mind was blown with that NeoGAF post. Seriously, if all that is to be in the game, then it will be amazing!

And I loved the first one.

  • Never mind the end of my last comment. Got the video going and it answered it pretty clearly. Looks awesome. Love the games shown.

  • Man this truly sounds interesting. I was wondering if the aesthetic would take a toll because of the new freedom, but I was wrong!

    I can’t effin’ wait! bring on LBP2!

    • Nope, we have a new graphics engine, so LBP2 will look awesome, and all original LBP levels will look even better than they do in the original game.

  • That trailer gives me a happy feeling.

  • it mentions the old levels at the end, so i bet it does let you carry over the old stuff. this looks AWeSOME. I want to make a up-downly shooter!

  • Sweet! I am looking forward to this game. However, wasn’t LittleBigPlanet supposed to be a standalone game with unlimited possibilities? Couldn’t you add all of these new features in a patch or something? Still this is great news! Beyond!

    • Would have been impossible, LBP2 is fundamentally a new game, new graphics engine, etc. so releasing LBP2 on disc is a must, and well worth it ;).

  • Oh my god, this is AWESOME! Amazing work guys!

  • That is great news :)…
    It also makes me wonder????

What are you saving for E3 ( chilllllllllls ) :)

  • Im a Big LBP Fan.Can’t Wait for this one to come out.

  • Now this is how you start off a Week….Cant wait for number 2….imagine the possibilities.

  • awesome!

  • This is amazing…this is freaking amazing! MM you guys rule!

  • Just to double check, we’ll be able to have evil sackboys as bad guys?

  • Oh, and epic trailer is epic!

  • Stinkinmushroom

Awesome stuff MM. seriously AWESOME. I’d like to share my ideas but the Playstation.blog share is just too small so take a look at this please:

-No representation of all the levels on a planet, it’s just not clear enough. For the story mode and my own levels no problem… but for the community it’s too hard to find a particular level, even with search
    -Class levels by:

Created: -Today, -This week, – This Month, – Last 6 months, More than a year ago, …

    * Rating

    * Category :Platformer, Racer, MiniGame, Concept art, Music Clip, Movie, Arcade Classic, …

    * Most played : – Today, -This Week, -This Month, – This Year, – All time

    * Most commented: – Today, -This Week, -This Month, – This Year, – All time

    * Difficulty ( Users will be able to rate the difficulty at the end of the level )

    * Ratio Played/Rating

    * Ratio Created when/Rating

    * Media Molecule’s favorite of the week/month

    – More importantly, make these filters compatible with one another. For example, i wanna find the best rated Racer level with high difficulty that was created this week.

Go on Neogaf for more ideas… But seriously.. that trailer looks so good , i’m shocked

  • I was going to buy LBP2 before seeing this, but now, damn, it looks better than I expected!

  • Amazing!

  • Wow.

    Day 1

  • I love the music, I will be singing that for hours now.

    I have a quick questions:

Will this game have the 50 levels single player like the first game or is this just a big create kit?

Also will Stephan Fry return for the voice over?

  • i will preorder it as soon as it gains a release date. O_O looks AMAZING.

  • this one of the best mondays ever. LBP 2 baby, havent had this feeling since zelda came out. speaking of which 3D Dot Game heroes this week! cant wait!!

  • georgecat315fat

    Yes! Day one!

  • Great, now I have to pick up all the little pieces that were my brain off the living room floor. This is going to take a while. In hindsight though, I would have to say BEST MONDAY EVER!

  • move me

  • that looks TOTALLY WICKED!!!!!!

    Can;t Wait!!

  • Greatness. MM and Sony keeps delievering.

Also what is the name of that song in the tralier? I know I know it but its escaping me.

  • I was really hoping for better platforming and a better story mode.

This seems to be the exact opposite of what I wanted. :(

  • Im surprised to see a LBP2 since you guys at SCEA denied it MANY TIMES..i guess this is a LIE that im not going to be madd about.I liking the new options you have with LBP2..but i was kinda looking more forward to a 3d world type of game, although i do like the thought of making your own mini games-(like that racing one).Im also impressed with the release date..this fall is going to be awesome..socom 4 and LBP2..whats nex? Twisted Metal ..I HOPE SO! SONY is going to take over e3 AGAIN!

  • Dear, MM

    sincerely,
    Rob

    *throws underwear*

  • Best news to start my day off !! I can’t wait for this game. I love LBP ! Sony is really punching out good stuff before E3 so I can’t wait to see what they have in store for E3 !

  • God, that screeching portion of the music is horrific.

  • PLS HAVE POWER UPS!? PRETTY PLS?

  • GOTY 2010 confirmed!

  • I cannot wait. amazing. This made my year!

  • WOW, OMG, WOW, OMG, WOAH! OMGOMGOMGOMOMG ZOMG!!!!!!!! O.O
I <3 YOU MM!!! The new tools in LBP2 will be prefect for my level I wanted to make previous but couldn't!!! :D

  • Two words…

    Jaw dropping

  • First day purchase for me. I loved the first one even though I haven’t created any levels yet (my ideas don’t materialize well enough in the game… or maybe I just suck at it), but hopefully I’ll get to improve on it for the sequel.

  • Hello by Eric Levine.

Kudos go to MM, but i Denmark we are some sackboys who dont understand
why MM is making a second game. Little big planet is unik and leav it like
that, will sackboy and Little big planet die

  • Woooooo000ooOOO0oooo00ttt!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You just gave me the biggest and goofiest grin I’ve had on in a while :D

  • GOTY FOR SURE!

  • I was right. YES!!!! I knew when you said monday you would blog more about LBP2 there would be a teaser. It looks awesome. I’ll probably be able to make better levels. I’m more into the future tech stuff than the cardboards and what not. I love all the ideas. I was checking out LBP Central and they had loads of info that’s been posted about this. Everything looks amazing. Can’t wait till winter.

  • I read about this on Game Informer. You guys are Insane!!! You understand this right?

I wondered what you could do to make things better in a game that allows you to do everything, but you did.

  • I was initially very excited by LBP, but then I discovered I don’t have the amount of patience it takes to make anything beyond a mediocre level. The story levels were fun with friends, but the solo experience is kind of cold.

I reserve judgement on wether LBP2 can hold my attention for longer, the trailer looks stunning though.

The song in the excellent trailer is ‘Sleepyhead’ by Passion Pit, if anyone was wondering.
