LittleBigPlanet 2 for PS3 Officially Announced for Winter 2010!

Eric Levine's Avatar Posted by on May 10, 2010 // SCEA PR Manager

I’m pleased to share some exciting news involving our crafty, stitched-together character we all know and love – that’s right, I’m talking about the one and only Sackboy. Today, we are officially announcing that our cloth friend and all of his fellow Sack-people will be back for a completely new adventure in LittleBigPlanet 2, which will be released later this year for PS3!

LittleBigPlanet established the Play, Create, Share creative gaming genre and we can’t thank the fans and critics enough for the praise and support we’ve received. The game continues to grow and evolve, helped by countless players around the globe. In fact, the sharing nature of the game has become so embraced, it has attracted fans to publish more than two million levels to the PlayStation Network since the award-winning game was released!

To show you what you can expect from LittleBigPlanet 2, here’s an exclusive look at our spanking new trailer:

So, what can you expect from LittleBigPlanet 2?

First of all, it’s developed by Media Molecule, the extremely talented team that brought you the first game, so you know you’re going to get a special experience. LittleBigPlanet 2 will provide a whole new collection of tools and rules for fans to Play, Create, and Share, including an evolved approach to control and customization that has never been seen before.

LittleBigPlanet has always empowered users to create their own levels by utilizing the same tools as the development team. Now in LittleBigPlanet 2, we’ve upped the ante, giving players the ability to not only make better levels, but completely new games – think top-down racing games, multiplayer shooters, flying side-scrollers, RPGs, etc. The possibilities are really endless.

LBP2 will also have a loads of new features, including revamped graphics, a fresh storyline, added accessories and equipment for Sackboy, and much, much more – trust me I’m only scratching the surface here!

I just went through the trailer frame by frame.

Looks like the racing one was achieved by setting the gravity to zero and attaching a rocket to your cart. So you may now have the ability to change the gravity.

At 1:27 you can see the camera is actually rotating instead of the entire level like most people had to do in the first one. You can tell this is true by watching the background graphics rotate along with the level.

Looks like there is new ‘fur’ graphics.

Looks like you may be able to customize your planets appearance for people coming and checking out your profile.

The planets appearance seem to change based on what level pack you are playing.

The character at 1:06 has been showing multiple times throughout the video which shows he has some importance in the game, grandfather sack maybe?

0:36 you character have new emotes, dancing?

This is just like what Capcom did for SSFIV, except this is BC with the old LBP. Will it be priced as a normal game?

Looks great. Btw whats the song?

If you guys are announcing this now, I seriously can’t imagine what kind of surprises you have lined up for E3. It’s sure to blow last year’s E3 away (no easy feat).

I must admit, when I first heard of this, I had my doubts. But that trailer (and then reading up on it on the site, of course) convinced me otherwise. Definitely a pre-order, day of release, ASAP kinda buy.

Great, just fix the platforming mechanics. Way too floaty and inaccurate.

Let’s hope this does make the winter release before the big holiday seasons. If so this will kill everything this x-mas season.

Absolute Insanity!!! Love every second of the Trailer. Jaw droped the entire time.

I am going Crazy over this… Best News Announced. EVER! I always knew MM would make a sequel for LBP, but I never expected them to push the evolope so much that it would burst.

Sony, keep up the great job. You always deliver.

If no one is going to say it, I might as well…..

We all know this game is ‘Revolutionary’ but there are alot of people out there who are too ignorant to even care for this game. Im talking ’bout WII owners who are too caught up on those crapy games that uses flashy advertisement to hide their fail attemps at what they intend on doing.
What we must do is spread the word about this amazing game, give it the atention and credit that it desperately desearves, and bring it in the spotlight with todays ‘gameing icons’. Some times, i feel that LBP does not get all the cretit it deserves. Its up to us to give it.

+ wjiw on May 10th, 2010 at 5:23 pm said:

My mind was here.. and then it got blown away! If you guys fix the multiplayer lag I got with the first one I will buy five copies of this game!

This looks absolutely amazing. PS3 FTW always.

Only thing I am hoping is that the costumes we bought for LBP will transfer over to LBP2 somehow, cuz i really don’t want to buy the exact same costume again.

Will LBP1 be completely obsolete after this?

How Fantasticly Wonderful

In 2007, we fell in love with the play create share world of sackboy, and we couldnt get enough of it

In 2010, just 3 years and 2 million levels later, MM has been able amp their existing frianchise.

I can only expect the best of this wonderous imaginative world of Litte Big Planet….2

how we’ll look years back from now and see that this is it, this is the creative change that will push the minds of millions to a new age in gaming! Where would we be without LBP…..hmmmmmm

Hey Eric! Super cool to see some of your answers to questions here… I have something that I’m dying to get an answer to about LBP2. We know we’ll be able to use a mouse and keyboard to a certain extent… What about pen tablets? I just tried controlling the XMB with a Wacom tablet and it does work… So would it theoretically work in LBP2? Has Media Molecule thought of this. It would be such an amazing feature for artists who love working with a pen or brush that the tablets allow us to do with paint and editing programs already!

+ spideyal on May 10th, 2010 at 6:50 pm said:

Whenever this releases, it’s going to be the best game of that time frame. I’m actually SO excited after watching that trailer.

And very good choice for music, the music in LBP always seems to be music I’ve heard before, or the same music genre I listen to. I love it. Passion Pit FTW!

+ Tomm4118 on May 10th, 2010 at 6:57 pm said:

I just cant get enough of this trailer. Its so adicting!!!
This is the 50th time I’ve watch this Video XD

AT 0:46……… Do I see sackboy doing flips in the air?

that would be so cool if they had that. XD New emotes would be epic! and fully animated features such as dancing! ohhhhhh…. epic XD

Just when I thought yah couldn’t do anything else to improve this game, yah go and blow it up!!!!! Creation tools to make brand new whole games besides a platformer?!?! Thats insane. You guys literally blew it up. I’m not sayin that to compliment yah, yah really really took a huge leap forward and made the game bigger than it ever was before. Now I’m wonderin, besides the usual stickers and outfits, what are yah gonna give for dlc?

+ jmtstan1138 on May 10th, 2010 at 7:33 pm said:

this could hurt the sales of ModNation Racer. They take the create mode into the whole new level. Kudos for MediaMolecule
