Introducing MotorStorm Apocalypse

257 19

More than two years ago we decided where the MotorStorm festival should head next, and I’ve been itching to talk about it ever since. Now, as part of the global announcement, and with E3 just around the corner, it’s so exciting to finally be able to share some information about the MotorStorm Apocalypse.

MotorStorm Apocalypse

Here are some of the headlines…

You May Have Heard…We’re Heading to the City!

But this is no ordinary city. In the same way that the first MotorStorm was set in Monument Valley, and MotorStorm Pacific Rift was set on ‘The Island’, inspired by Hawaii and other Pacific islands, we’ve set this MotorStorm in ‘The City’, inspired by the West Coast of America, and, in particular, the Bay Area of California.

MotorStorm’s brand of racing is not about ‘going urban’ though. We all know that the lunatic ‘Stormers would take every expectation about street racing and turn it upside-down. So this is what they’ve done. Welcome to Brutal Urban Off-Road Racing!

MotorStorm Apocalypse

Post Apocalyptic? NO!

The city has been abandoned and somewhat damaged after a tremor. When the ‘Stormers find this out, they head straight in. Pretty soon, two things become clear: it isn’t completely empty and Mother Nature isn’t done yet!

Throughout the game the city will be ripped to pieces, in real-time, as you race. Routes will be affected, as will our emergent gameplay.

Buggies using collapsing walls as half-pipes. Big Rigs on the rooftops of skyscrapers as they collapse. Superbikes gunning into the basements of enormous rifts. Supercars flicking on their headlights to barrel through the subways and sewers. Multi-vehicle pile ups on giant bridges as they buckle and twist. Driving through someone’s office and smashing up their desks. It’s all there.

Two groups have also stayed behind, and neither takes too kindly to MotorStorm’s arrival. I’ll talk more about them another time, but for now I’ll say that when they realise there isn’t going to be much of a city left, they start to destroy it too.

This isn’t post-apocalyptic. It’s apocalyptic. You are there when it happens. It’s survival racing.

MotorStorm Apocalypse

Variety, Chronology and Depth are King

We’ve listened to everything people said about our previous games and, as a result, one of our priorities is to make a more satifsying overall game experience. In our single-player mode, every race is unique. When a building comes down it stays down. When you race a track again, the buildings will still be down and the MotorStorm crew will have carved yet more routes into the ruined landscape. The only time you’ll see the same thing twice is when you choose to. Underscoring this chronology is the fact that you’ll get to see the game from three different viewpoints.

Nothing annoys me more than the notion that an accessible action racer must also be shallow or plain dumb. So once you have experienced the single-player journey, the true depth of our title will come to the fore. Our overhauled ‘Wreckreation’ mode has been heavily influenced by the best online titles: from shooters and action adventures, RPGs and platformers. It features:

  • Sixteen player online multiplayer.
  • Four player split-screen.
  • Combinations of the two. Play with three friends in the living room against 12 more online.
  • Massive vehicle customisation. Change vinyls, vehicle parts, vehicle shapes and more. Upload them to the community site and share them with others. They automatically work on all vehicle types, and include your PSN ID.
  • Vehicle perks. Modify your handling, boosting and offensive abilities as you unlock new perks.
  • A wealth of rankings to progess through online with associated rewards and recognition.
  • Stacks of online rewards to earn and persistent progress giving the most determined and successful racers the status and recognition they deserve.
  • Persistent matchmaking. Keep your party together throughout your gaming session.
  • A Game Mode Creator. From a completely blank canvas you can design your own game rules and victory conditions, play them online, and incorporate them into tournaments.

Lots More

We’ve got a lot more to reveal too; things like replacing loading screens with cut-scenes that finally reveal what it’s like to be a part of the MotorStorm subculture, to changes to handling and boosting, to the five completely new vehicle classes making their way to this festival.

The end of the world…is just the beginning.

Let me know your thoughts.

  • holy crap! 4-player ONLINE splitscreen? AMAZING!

I do hope though that you didn’t change too much of the handling of the car though. With the exception of tipping over very easily in Pacific Rift, I loved it. I could never go back to the first Motorstorm.

I’m very excited for Motorstorm. Motorstorm and Gran Turismo are easily my favorite racing games.

  • I figured the thirds installment would have snowy mountainous regions. Sadly not but this is still exciting.

  • Is there a cockpit view?

  • Is there a different word for just Awesome? Maybe, Supra Awesome¿?

  • @angel, I was thinking the same.

  • Will this include 24-bit audio? I don’t mind largish HD installations if it means the game can take advantage of the PS3’s unique HD audio features.

Also, another vote for weather effects! Seeing San Francisco crumble in an earthquake is cool, but seeing the rubble get wet and break down, then having to figure out how to drive on it, would be awesome.

  • online couch coop! Now you are talking, I havn’t bought a motorstorm game yet, but the option to mix up couch coop with online means I will be getting this. I really hope this option becomes standard across all games.

  • Oh sweet Jesus. This is the best news I’ve heard in a while.

  • If I only play splitscreen with my friends, will we all be able to level up? I assume that when you said multiple PSN logins, that means four people logged in at the same time?

    • Basically, if you’ve got four PSN accounts on your PS3 you can all login and play Wreckreation together. And we also support guest logins too.

  • All you need now is a clan system.

  • Probably better that it is 2011, but at the same time early 2011 is getting crowded, it seems everyone is delaying thier games…

  • when do we get to see gameplay videos or a trailer?

  • Motorstorm is an amazing franchise and I love every single game you guys have made until now. I cant wait for this one.

Please do show us a gameplay/trailer soon.

  • wow this one looks really good! i think this will be my very 1st motorstorm game!

ive played 1&2 but never really bough it

  • What an amazing day for me as a gamer. First a gameplay trailer gets released for the new Mortal Kombat (which looks AMAZING btw), and I’m the biggest MK fan ever, and have been since day 1 in the arcades. And then THIS!!! An official announcment of a sequel to what quickly became my favorite racing game of all time. Which I consider high praise indeed since I’ve never played any other off-road racer I’ve liked and have mostly only liked sim racers not arcade racers.

I only have one request if this is possible (and I know it is since Killzone 2 did it), thank you for confirming custom soundtracks are being put in again, but can you PLEASE make it so they work online this time? It was my only disappointment with Pacific Rift.

Anyway, I can’t wait for this game. Motorstorm is the most fun and intense racing game ever made. Looking forward to more.

Oh and hey, as a HUGE racing game fan, and a HUGE fan of Motorstorm, I have an incredible pitch for the next Motorstorm game. It’s really strong, I even have the story board and narration for the opening. If you’re interested message me on PSN or by e-mail.

  • Please add racing wheel support this time, and I will buy it… I woulda bought the others, too, but the last I heard, no wheel support.

  • I said it on IGN and I’ll say it again here!
I’m not the biggest MotorStorm fan but maybe it’s because I didn’t put enough time in the games, the demos were not that convincing IMO…BUT…4 players SPLITSCREEN is supported even ONLINE?? Wow, I’m shocked! Greatest thing I hear this generation, for me, it’s way bigger than 3D…! My jaw in on the floor along with my @ss!!

It’s just like ND would announce that Uncharted 3 would supports 2 players split-screen coop and 2 players splitscreen for online multiplayer matches!!! …with each of the 2 local players using their own PSN ID!!! (This is the biggest complaint I have against the PS3, my favorite console, not being able to easily use our PSN ID for 2 players local games, that really hurts the fun for me. …second player can’t have his own name, customs, and trophies, having my name with “(2)” is really bad…)

  • Awesome! Motorstorm is one of the most underappreciated racing franchises out there. The setting for the new one is perfect.

  • I like the new location.

  • Thanks for the warm reception & for sharing your thoughts everyone.

Apologies if your comment went unanswered this time, you’ll get another chance to hear from me on the PlayStation.Blog I’m sure. :)

Loads more MotorStorm Apocalypse reveals & details coming your way, but I must stop…need to go get ready for L.A. ;)

  • Amazing, i’ll buy it the day its released. Anything in the line of Beta testing? ill be glad to help

  • i know play motorstorm cuz it just another race now you get a change with MotorStorm Apocalypse this may get this

  • Hey I just got done reading the official announcement of motorstom apocalypse and im not only impressed with how the game looks but the fact the Matt Southern took the time and responded to the questions people have about the game, not that many developers who post on the blog actually do that, so big thanks there. Anyways are you guys going to include a detail description of what your friends are doing on the XMB? because i really like when games do that like with LBP,MW2,and SOCOM.

Example- Bob123 is racing on “this level” lap 2/3 or something like that

  • I have always loved the Motorstorm series, Motorstorm: Pacific Rift in particular. For me the tracks were always the stars of the game as each one had its own character and unique twist. After playing Pacific Rift I couldnt go back to other racing games, they were just so bland.

It really was a case of “Oh heres another corner, just like the last” sort of feeling. Im a bit worried this new setting is moving away from Motorstorm does best, brutal edge of control racing in some of the most beautiful, exotic, colourful and unique settings. I hope its not all grey and brown. :(

  • dammit… he probably wont see what i wrote : /

  • Pretty excited about this! Motorstorm was always good for a few laps, but this title looks to be an evolution of what works and good ideas combined. So color me excited!

  • Motorstorm1 was bland with all the brown and orange color pallet, Motorstorm2 shut me up with 4differant islands and a great enviornment. i was thinking whenever Motorstorm3 is released if i would get it, i mean i’ve had enough with offroad type games and MS Pacific rift was too good to be topped.

and now Apocolypse is announced and once again Evolution studios shuts me up

    keep up the great work

  • also sorry, but one more question

Cross-game invites, like what MW2 does?

  • I’m a huge MotorStorm fan. One qualm I’ve had with the game is the lack of a true tournament style racing format. I know at its heart MotorStorm is a an arcade racer, but I would love it if you were not required to finish in the top 3 in order to get points necessary to move on. If I finish 5th in a race it puts more pressure for me to finish higher in the next race hence making it more intriguing. Even a tournament grid as simple as the Mario Kart would suffice. This would add all kinds of replay value for me personally.

  • This is actually the very 1st motorstorm i am interested in completly!! the abilitly to customize things wins me over in a heart beat.. and then putting racing on top of that just puts the icing on the cake or the cherry on the sundae. i just have a few questions:
What aspects of the car can we customize (the color, parts, body, wheels, nitro…)? and can we customize our own drivers?

  • @McNast

Yes, I would love to see that too. That would also allow for some split screen campaign… like how in Mario Kart you can race with a friend through a tournament, I’d like to see the same in MS.

  • Dude this sounds freaking amazing! I’ve had this idea since motorstorm 1 I am so stoked, the customization is a HUGE plus that’s something the series was kind of missing but now it sounds like it’s going to be there in spades. I’m really excited I hope it’s set for release this year i cannot wait for E3

  • Matt Southern said : (June 10th, 2010 at 10:55 am)

“Yep, totally. Multiple logins are supported on PS3, so we’re definitely going to be making use of it.”

Wow, second best thing I hear today, I’m really impressed and this game is now on my “I’ll probably buy it day one” list! Second best thing because the first was that this game will support 4p splitscreen offline AND online, awesome! I didn’t buy the first 2 MS but this one is definitely on my radar! Great work guys!

  • Thank God your changing the handling. For me, the game was kinda hard too control. Thanks for the new vehicle classes, maybe that will make the game more easier. Can’t wait.

  • @McNast & @Thraxen :

I agree, this is the most important thing that racing games lacks these days along with splitscreen support and online splitscreen support! (wich MS3:A will adress!)

Being able to play in the MAIN MODE (campaign/career) along with a buddy at home (or/and online) and unlocks things like tracks and cars together is A-WE-SO-ME.

  • These announcements before E3 is getting ridiculous. Is sony even going to E3 anymore? I dont want E3 to be about move and 3D!!

  • Wow! This game sounds better than I ever imagined it could be.

Four players online? That is just awesome! Will we be able to use our individual PSN IDs?

I’m sold. I’m buying this on day one. I just have one request. Ease up on the ranking down in online multiplayer. I eventually earned my platinum in Pacific Rift but loosing an hours worth of progress because the guy in the big rig crushed me is just downright frustrating.

  • I never played much of Motorstorm…BUT, Im definitely excited that this game is taking place in my hometown of the Bay Area!!!

Brings back memory when I played San Francisco RUSH

  • #136

Yes all four can have their own psn id and lvl up.

  • i havent even got throught the first 2 motorstorms ( i dont own a ps3 so i have to go to ma cuz house to play. ima have alot to do wen i get one

  • Awesome. Will this be on PSP or it will be PS3 exclusive ?

  • I just started really playing Pacific Rift (after letting it collect dust for a year)- shame on me.

    I LOVE THE MONSTER TRUCK.

Really looking forward to the next installment – will there be any perks for returning fans? Transferring perks, trophies etc? Like a Motorstorm loyalty bonus?

  • my poor poor wallet

  • Suggestion, MotorStorm ApocalyPS3?

  • Customization, matchmaking, and apocalyptic environments… Those are some sweet new features. I love MotorStorm games but this sounds like pure awesome! You guys at Evolution Studios are doing some great work. I will be happy to say thank you with my wallet. Day one buy for sure!

  • Oh guys you are the Masters!! Thanks to Sony and big shout out to you guys for offering us such a great IP. with WipEout HD, Gran Turismo 5, ModNation Racers and MotorStorm, the PS3 is the queen of racing.

is it gonna be in 3D ?

  • yes yes yes :D

  • I think it’s taking place in SF ;)

  • What about the car’s physic??

It look garbage like MS1 and MS2 or ultra realistic like burnout paradise?

  • E3? Does Sony have an E3 this year? I don’t think they need one with what we’ve heard from them the past 5 weeks.

    Socom 4
    LBP 2
    Killzone 3
    InFAMOUS 2
    Motorstorm: Apocalypse

Sony isn’t stopping playstation right? Are you planning to have a goodbye speech for 2 hours? Or are you planning a shock partnership with apple to create the Iplay??? I hope not cause their won’t be a video game market without you guys. Shock us all at E3 guys. :)
