PlayStation Plus Coming Soon

July 30th Update: The content per month isn’t determined as day one content and is content that will be made available through the month.

If you have been paying attention to all of the news coming out of E3, you probably heard that we introduced a new subscription service called PlayStation Plus, which will be available on June 29.

PlayStation Plus Logo

PlayStation Plus is a service that lives on top of the current PlayStation Network. So, while users will continue to have free access to PlayStation Network’s unmatched and ever-growing suite of new and exclusive content, services, and community focused tools – just as they do today – PlayStation Plus subscribers will gain access to an exclusive set of features and content designed specifically for gamers.

When you subscribe to PlayStation Plus, you’ll get free games and DLC (pretty sweet), frequent discounts on PlayStation Store, early invitations to select betas of popular games, and free monthly episodes of Qore – our high-definition, interactive gaming lifestyle show. You’ll also enjoy new functionality such as Full Game Trial where you can “try before you buy” – play a Blu-ray or PSN game for up to one hour and then you can buy the game, download it and keep your progress and trophies. Another cool feature is Automatic Downloads that will push select demos, game related videos, patches and firmware updates to your PS3 so you don’t have to think about it. Total it up and you’ll get hundreds of dollars of value through the year with exclusive digital content from both our World Wide Studios Group and our publishing partners. And every month we’ll be adding new content and continually adding new features, making PlayStation Plus an incredible value, time saver and ticket to front-of-the-line access.

At launch, PlayStation Plus will offer subscribers the full PlayStation Network game, WipEout HD, full game trial of inFAMOUS, PSP minis and PS One Classics such as Fieldrunners, Age of Zombies and Rally Cross, as well as premium avatars, themes and DLC levels and map packs. Additionally, subscribers will always have access to their virtual library of free games for as long as they keep their PlayStation Plus subscription. In all, subscribers will get an unprecedented amount of value, access and convenience and, in the first month alone, will receive more than $50 worth of content.

PlayStation Plus will be available for a yearly fee of $49.99. We are also running a “limited time offer” giving subscribers 3 free bonus months for signing up for a yearly subscription – so those who
sign up now will get 15-months of PlayStation Plus. Consumers also have the option to subscribe for 3 months for $17.99.

You can sign up on the PlayStation Store or learn more about the exclusive features at us.playstation.com.

  • serious question: those free games are wiped off our ps3 if we dont renew our subscription… what if our subscription expires and we go get a psn card to buy a new subscription within the next few days… will our free games still be wiped out? or is there some sort of waiting period after our subscription expires?

  • The other problem I see is game selection, I already have WipeOut HD, so this month I will receive less for my money than other subscribers, there should be multiple options to choose each month, so this month i can choose game B because I already have game A, and another subscriber could choose game A, because he already has game B

  • So, if i feel like a game trial I have to first download a full blu-ray disc’s worth of data?!?!?!

    Please tell me its streamed.

I’m also concerned that I will have to much data automatically installing itself on my machine. If it’s anything but a few Mb’s of updates/patches I will be quite annoyed. I have a very limited data allowance with my ISP in a bid to save cash, so I don’t want to receive a shock bill at the end of the month.

  • What you already have all the games first offered with the Plus subscription? Is it still wort it. Any news on where Cross-Game Voice Chat is going?

  • This pitch sounds all-too familiar to the Qore rollout, and look what happened there: Qore became a collection of shameless puff-pieces for forthcoming titles while carrying an ever-devolving dearth of actual content.

Thanks, but no thanks on PSN+.

Fool me once, and all that..

  • So do the updates get pushed to the console while it is turned off?

And if your subscription expires does your previous content return when you renew your subscription?

  • Is this being offered in all regions or just the states?

  • My question is this…
If we allow our subscription to lapse and then pick it back up, will be able to keep the games from the original subscription or will we have to start from square one again?

  • Can I buy a $50 PSN Card and redeem it, to pay for the subscription? Because, I have “no” Credit Card..

  • SONY:

You offered a very similar deal with Qore — but were unable to deliver any kind of meaningful content, DLC, exclusive betas, or even exclusive demos.

Why should we believe you this time around (and at twice the price)?

  • Looking forward to being apart of PSN+. Any chance we will see some sort of PSN Clan Management APP/Prog in the near future for the hard core multi game PSN Clans out there?

  • I want to know more about how the games will expire if you’re no longer a subscriber.

So if I subscriber and get Wipeout and play it and then my subscription runs out, what happens to the game? I don’t get to play it anymore? Do I delete it?

So it’s like a perpetual renters fee then? You keep paying to keep playing?

I get why…people can subscribe, get the free stuff, and cancel for a refund or whatever but what about an unsubsribers discount option. If you can no longer pay for a subscription, give us the option to buy the games we got for free at a discounted price. We shouldn’t have to suffer if we can no longer do a subscription.

  • wait is there going to be cross chat? can you please just give us a list of what exactly what we get for signing up please!

  • @Redikol I can’t see why not. Why wouldn’t that work?

  • For me to purchase a Premium PSN Service, I need it to be at least as good as free services for other platforms. Steam, is an example. I don’t care about the “free content”, as I’m paying for the service. It’s great, but it’s not what will drag me and most customers. We want added functionality.

PSN already has tons of content, we just have to pay for them. But no matter how much we’d like to pay for it, we can’t have added funcionality like Cloud Game Saving (Server storage for game saves, so you can resume your progress at other PS3s without having to worry about copying saves AND getting trophies in systems other than yours). Steam has it for free.

Cross Game voice chat is a must.

We need PSN to be more customizable. At least for premium members. PSN itself has to be a social service. It has to contain more informations about the player and what he plays. Not just two or three pieces of information and a generic predefined static image to choose as a gaming avatar.

Rethink PSN functionalities, and I may give the PSN Plus a try. Otherwise, you’re not getting me with the “bargain” for monthly content I can’t really choose.

  • I’d love to see something like this come to the psp. I want more psp love.

  • Sounds Great! so with automatic download’s will Qore be downloaded automatically? it’s not very fun scrolling through all downloads that came after. oh and i wish the cloud server saves made the cut for this service that would have been fantastic! All and all i can’t wait to try this out!

  • @56 Thank you for having common sense.

  • WipeoutHD isn’t really an incentive for those who already bought it…

  • what features will there be in the service?

-will there be cloud storage to save games online?

-Is Cross-game party chat included in the service?

-how will it effect the PSN? How will it effect the devs and publishers?

-Most importantly will it finally make the PSN more community centered in the long run, kind of like XBL’s dashboard?

  • Could we also get some sort of definitive answer about cross game chatting?

It’s only been, what, three or four years now…

  • …who the heck doesn’t already own WipeoutHD?

  • Please add the ability to save files to a PS3 cloud as part of the PS Plus service. I should have access to my save files from any PS3. In it’s current format, there are games (i.e., Demons Souls, SFIV) that copy-protect the save file and you are unable to move it from one PS3 to another. While I can appreciate the developers’ desire to make sure people aren’t swapping save files, my inability to play a game across multiple PS3s in my household (i.e., start playing in the bedroom, continue playing in the living room) is very frustrating.

  • I see you get a lot of free stuff for signing up early for PSN+ and that is great, but what about those who signed up for Qore already.
I recently signed up for Qore a month ago, and now I wish I hadn’t.
I want to join PSN Plus anyway to take advantage of the offer, but I paid for a Qore subscription already which comes with PSN Plus so I didn’t have to.
I know you are giving us $200 in free stuff, but I would of received all the free stuff anyway if I waited to signup for Plus.

  • I’m not even going to consider this horrible over priced offer until you have Cross game chat. Even after that, I will not purchase it until it is supported in almost every major video game released since the console was launched. To have a necessary feature not supported in huge games like Killzone 2 and Resistance, is simply outrageous and out of the question for many gamers. I am extremely disappointed in PSN+ Sony.

On a positive note, I did enjoy the Press Conference. I was a little disappointed in it though. Not because of the stuff you had shown, but because of the stuff you hadn’t shown. I expected to see more of FF14, FF13versus, Killzone 3, DC Universe Online, Agent and Last Guardian.

  • since qore alone is 24 bucks a year can we have something like a plan that exclude qore for lets 24.99 because qore sucks and they only have it once a month and plus i don’t have that much time to download qore and i have to install it again…can they start streaming video like for 360 instead of keep downloading video everytime we want to watch them especially trailer…and be more specific about the stuff because im confuse and if u decide to subscribe what are the term for refund because i can by and extra game with that money… will they keep up with flash update for the web…

  • I got onboard with Qore from the start. It’s been a decent value for $25/year. PS+ promises to be more of what I had hoped Qore would be like, though. A bunch of extra content, which includes Qore, for $50/year for those who want it. Online multiplayer is still free even if you don’t. Seems like a win-win to me.

  • remove the expiry on the DLC and i’ll sub for a year to try

  • What if you have inFAMOUS already do we have to take it I will get day one the 3 months to try out they will chose from there

  • Day 1 purchase if we get the chat! A private chat is all I want
    :(

  • Those asking where to sign up…maybe wait until, oh l dont know…June 29th?
My guess it will be on the PS Store.

As for 23456890 people asking the same questions….

  • will i be getting free dlc for games that i dont have? lol not being a punk cuz i love my ps3… i will laugh more than be pissed

  • ok im a Qore subscriber, and soon to be a yearly PSN+ subscriber. My question is that will Qore subscribers still get exclusive content?

  • Dear Playstation,

Cross game voice chat should be FREE. It’s a rip off to pay $50 just so I can chat with my friends online.

When I first heard about Playstation Plus, it sounded like a really sweet deal, but now, I don’t think so. WHY WOULD WE SUBSCRIBE IF WE LOSE ALL OF THE THINGS WE GET IF WE CAN’T OR STOP SUBSCRIBING!? It’s like a big scam. C’mon Playstation, we payed the money to get the stuff, let us keep it. Otherwise, it would be smarter to just BUY the games instead of paying money to basically rent them.

I was really looking forward for Playstation Plus, but if I lose everything if I stop subscribing, then I payed $50(times however many years I have it) for nothing but voice chat, which should really be free. Your loyal gamers have been waiting for cross game voice chat since the release of the ps3.

I know free voice chat just won’t happen, so at least let us keep what we get, and this would be great, in conclusion.

  • I was really hoping for cloud storage and token wagering. And at least a 1 year warranty extension.

  • Is Party Chat included?

  • When I first heard about this it sounded great. Then, when the actual details came out at E3. Dumbstruck!! I can’t believe that this is what they have come up with. Also, it is astonishing that so many people seem pleased. It boggles my mind. I have to go to work, so I can probably buy it anyways.

  • This is so much fail on sony’s part. Especially pricing it at $49.99. Why would you promise future features? This feels like paying for Qore x2. Seriously. the bonus perks are NOT worth it. You guys said the same crap about Qore getting free content and it turned out to be crap. Exclusive beta? haha. PSN+ is a fail.

  • I’m interested but PLEASE give the people who already subscribe to Qore some sort of refund or credit. I just made a year subscription.

  • Really sucks because I just became a Qore subscriber this month…

  • Thirdly if you can’t see the value in PS+ than you have your head in the sand or up some where else(Use your imagination) If priced all the stuff PS is putting in the PS+ it is phenomenal.

    Qore 1 Yr $24.99
    PSN GAME $15.99
    PS1 GAME $5.99
    Game DLC .99 – $14.99
    PS Mini’s $2.99
    PSN Store Discount 10%-50% off
    Full game trails $9.99 – $59.99
Game Betas $5.00 based on pre-ordering at gamestop
    *These are based on averages

NOW ALL THAT TIMES 12 MONTHS… IF thats not a DEAL then i don’t know what is.

Sorry for the long post but i had to vent because some people want everything free not realizing that this is OPTIONAL service for $50…

  • i do believe i will be on this as soon as i cash my check

  • Guys look at Playstation Plus as Netflixs. You are in a sense renting the product, and you can hold on to it until your subscription is up. Similar to Netflixs, you rent any movie you want but once your subscription is up, you have to send the movie back.

  • I was planning on letting my Qore subscription end this month, so that’s perfect timing…

Question: is this for Canada, as well? Qore included in PS+, that is?

  • @111: Totally agree. I’m not interested in content perks, I’m looking for added *functionality* in a premium service. Cross-game chat, backwards compatibility, cloud game saves, improved social networking. That kind of stuff.

  • I think what they meant by “as long as you keep your subscription” to be all the FREE stuff you get, such as WipeoutHD will only be available to you for the duration of your subscription. Things that you actually BUY are yours forever.

I don’t think that’s so bad considering the games/content is free (with paid subscription) so once you terminate it, that content is gone. But things you buy are yours indefinitely.

  • Also, I wanted to say… I am subscribing to PlayStation Plus to support you guys. Leaving the PSN intact was probably a necessity, but I like to think you had a choice and simply chose to do the right thing for gamers who would prefer not to pay more just to play online, or newcomers who would see a fee as a barrier to entry. It was part of the reason I chose PS3 over 360 in the first place, so I hope it stays free even through to future generations. I’ll keep paying as long as I have an income.

I hope someone important sees this, and I hope others are of a similar mindset.

  • I’m Going to Get PlayStation Plus day 1 because it brings value to me when I’m looking into buying add-on content and looking into getting a new game on PSN and not sure 100% about getting or not.

My Main Question that I see allot of PSN Users Asking already is Will we see Cross Game Voice Chat in this Subscription of PlayStation Plus Or will we all as PSN users get that Experience across all PS3’s

The Word I like to be used with Cross Game Chat is “PSN Party System”

I’d Say with that “PSN PARTY SYSTEM” Should have at least 8 Players to Join in the PSN Party System then when Ready Launch into Games Still In the Same Voice Chat System.

That to me let alone brings VALUE to my PS3 Experince.
    Now Whos with me??
    Thanks Skater_Ricky, :D

  • I want free littlebigplanet like EU is getting this bogus.

  • According to the link in this article to the Playstation Plus website you can sign up in the store. Haven’t tried it yet as my kids are playing Sluggers but it seems like a good place to sign up.

I still need alot more info before I decide but I have a feeling this is another Qore – promise everything, deliver nothing. The first month game trial is for inFamous. Judging by the wording this is the ONLY game to “try”. I already played the demo, it was good, thanks. And despite owning a PS for many years I’ve never even heard of 2 of those 3 games. Minis are cheap. Avatars should be free. If I want a dynamic theme -to replace the many free ones I’ve gotten – I’ll buy 1.

Not to say this isn’t worth it for some people, it’s probably a solid “break even” or better proposition for <$5 month, but it's not earth shattering.

I'ld rather the PS Plus offer a subscription service to rival Netflix at $99/yr.
