Hi everyone, once again we’re adding new features to the PlayStation 3 (PS3) system via firmware update to ensure we’re bringing you the best, most comprehensive entertainment experience possible. PS3 system software update (v3.40) will be available soon, adding the PlayStation Plus subscription, enhancements to the connection between your PlayStation Network and Facebook accounts and more. Additionally, we’ll be launching system software update (v6.30) for the PSP (PlayStation Portable) system simultaneously with PS3 system software update (v3.40), adding PlayStation Plus compatibility as well as other new features.
We’ve gone ahead and provided a few highlights from PS3 firmware update (v3.40) below:
- PlayStation Plus: PlayStation Network users will be able to purchase membership to PlayStation Plus; a new subscription service on the PlayStation Network that provides you with new options to expand and enhance your gaming experience and enable you to gain an exclusive set of features and content. Friendly reminder, all of you PlayStation Network users will continue to have free access to PlayStation Network’s unmatched and expanding suite of new and exclusive features while PlayStation Plus subscribers will gain access to an exclusive and expanding set of gaming features, content and functionality.
- Photo Gallery: A new network based photo sharing feature is now available on the Photo Gallery. The enhancement allows you to upload, browse and comment on photos on Facebook and Picasa Web Album. You can also opt to share your photos between your PlayStation Network friends as well as print photos from Photo Gallery.
- Video Editor & Uploader: Video Editor and Uploader is a new function found on the XrossMediaBar (XMB), which enables you to edit, save and upload video files stored on the PS3 system to sites such as Facebook or YouTube.
- Five Star Rating Support: Users can rate the PlayStation Store content they have purchased with one to five star ratings.
- Power Save Settings: The default setting for PS3 System Auto-Off will be set at 2 hours, providing you with additional power save options and further improving power save features on the PS3 system.
In addition to the latest features introduced in PS3 system software update (v3.40), a separate, new PlayStation Network application on Facebook.com will be made available. This builds upon what was previously launched with Trophies and the ability to publish purchases from the PlayStation Store. Now you can further integrate your PlayStation Network and Facebook accounts with this new application. The application allows you to display your PlayStation Network profile on your Facebook account, find out which of your Facebook friends have a PSN account and send them a PlayStation Network friend request, view your PSN friends’ online status and add the PlayStation Network application tab to your Facebook user profile.
We’re very excited to be able to provide you with continued system software upgrades, which ensure your PS3 and PSP systems remain compelling offerings for years to come. Hello everyone, first I would like to thank Sony for another update, I know that the Playstation service has improved greatly since its launch, however it is very frustrating for us Playstation users know that once again the cross game chat is not available, it is All we’re asking in the last four years, is something so simple and very necessary for everyone and because we do not have? Please, I love the Sony Playstation family is without doubt the best console ever released to date, its market competitors have no chance against him, has great exclusive games, blu ray, already control with battery and motion sensor, Beautifully designed, the Home is a brilliant idea, just missing the cross game chat PLEASE!
Do not let most of us migrate to another platform game just because of that, I’ve had the console competition because of the cross game chat, I had to sell one and decided to sell it and stick with the Playstation, please values and my choice of many.

Por favor, Sony eu amo a família Playstation, é sem duvida o melhor console já lançado até hoje, seus concorrentes no mercado não tem a menor chance contra ele, tem ótimos jogos exclusivos, blu ray, controle já com bateria e sensor de movimento, um design muito bonito, a Home que é uma idéia genial, só falta o cross game chat POR FAVOR!
Não deixem que boa parte de nos migrem para outra plataforma de jogo só por causa disso, já tive o console da concorrência por causa do cross game chat, tive que vender um e optei em vendê-lo e ficar com o Playstation, por favor, valorize a minha escolha e a de muitos.

Well this came last night and as as soon as it hit my messages and connection settings started going on the Heavy Fritz. Hopefully as soon as I’m done with work at the office and I get home the system and the PSN are all kosher for me to finally get some PSN+.

I think this update is just MEH. I’m not subscribing to PSN Plus (at least for now) and I don’t care that much about the video editor or Facebook wider integration.
One suggestion to Sony: gamers have been asking about the cross-chat communication. If you haven’t done it yet, it’s time to start considering releasing it. Otherwise PSN will never be complete and a true entertainment place, as you guys adore emphasizing in your marketing stuff.
I love my PS3 and the games I have lotta fun with. But let’s face the truth about these regular sort of useless updates.

Just an idea to put out there for the PSN Plus.
1. It would be nice to actually let us choose what we want as a free game. For example a 20 dollar limit and we choose which game we want each month. I can care less about the ps one classics and minis.
2.The same with the game dlc to let us actually choose what we want. Its not fair to say your getting this month killzone 2 dlc when someone doesnt have the game. To let us choose which dlc we want with a 20 dollar limit would be nice.

How about stop wasting time on computer features, and get real gaming feature for this “gaming” console.

I usually check PS Blog pretty often, and it seems to me that Sony really doesn’t care about what people would like as far as features. I think the one HUGE problem is that the Sony staff on here really don’t explain why we aren’t getting certain features, instead of giving a solid answer they just talk around the issue. It would probably help some if we would get some descent answers to why we aren’t getting certain features…. Just a thought.
Marketing is driving all the worst features, it’s the new plague.
Dont’ ask why facebook crap is on this gaming console, marketing think that people want this. But they should ask who are the real users and drive the feature for them, more useless feature to put up in advertisements.

@709 I DEMAND Cross Game Chat and already own a XBOX… Thanks to the Linux removal, PS3 is only for exclusives now. I can’t update my console without Linux and Cross Game Chat is now in my veins.
There is an issue with the EyeCreate software and the new video editor and upload application. It wont use video created with EyeCreate without first copying to USB and copying back to the PS3. It says the video must be copied to the system with system software 3.40 installed, and it is installed.

To all the people complaining about the lack of cross game chat feature: Sony has already stated that they’re looking into ways to implement it for FREE. It’s not *ucking enchiladas, so be patient. I’m still hopeful we’ll see it this year.

Have u seen guys the new user card? It’s divided in two parts by the middle, more and less bright, really ugly, and this is just for showing gamer level? Meh, as always it seems you have monkeys instead of enginers working for you Sony.

Photo Gallery & Video Editor/Uploader: Because the Playstation.Blog share has just been clammoring for these right? Seriously, why even ask us to contribute if you’re going to be more worried about what Facebook is doing than what your users actually want?
Five Star ratings: This is a nice addition, but I would prefer to be able to sort my download list.
Power Save Settings: I’m guessing this is for California somehow.
So far, the entire 3.x firmware path has been crappier than a Randy Marsh vs. Bono poop-off.

$50.00 a month? You can keep this trash.. As for the other features, meh. My PS3 spends more time being a blue ray player than anything else. Games are too expensive anymore, too short, and I get hardly any replay value except for UC2, NHL 09, APB, perhaps a EA football game this year (one can dream you know). Even on a 50″ plasma and a killer home theater I am less impressed as the years wane by.
I’ll take my PC with W7/X64, surround sound, DX11 and a 26″ HD wide screen for gaming any day over any console. By the way did I mention my games still look better on PC and are still cheaper?

PSN+ is one of the dumbest things in a long list of Dumb things i have seen you guys pull. maybe if you actually had a good network as the foundation i would think about getting it. If im going to pay $50, i would rather give it to microsoft. You still have not given us crossgame chat. Downloading from your network is time consuming and almost not worth it. Why would i pay $50 to get free games(games you cant sell anymore), and a 60 minute trial to a game i sold to gamestop a year ago. GET YOUR HEAD ON STRAIGHT!!!! Maybe someday you guys will ad features people actually want as opposed to what you want to add. You should just give out coupons for Xbox at this point. I’m still waiting for the day when we can play PS2 games (disc games) on the PS3 again as well as DreamCast and PS2 games being sold on PSN.
And a lot of “PSone Classics” that I want still aren’t available.
Which reminds me…I gotta get like a $50 PSN network card again since I have like $2 left on my account and I have at least 1 thing I want from PSN…Final Fantasy IX.
Anyway, it’s still nice to see that Sony is releasing firmware updates to improve the PS3.
Maybe it’s time for the PSP to get a firmware update as well. It has been a while…

PS3 BC will not happen because Sony will be releasing more PS2 collections in the future.
Also, PSP frmware 6.30 was released at the same time as 3.40.

Also I know ( or mabye think) the eye toy has simple edge detection and color tracking, Digimask face mapping, se of computer vision (CV) and gesture recognition technologies implemented in the software,advanced facial recognition and analysis, and CV-based head tracking, etc, so could you please implement use of HAND to move along the XMB, that would be awesome thanks…
